beautiful music, hard to believe these were the source of music for over a century till radio surpassed it
Zeikou thats exactly what I said, unless the music was played live these boxes were what was used to play music on demand, till the advent of radio.
You are entirely correct. Cylinder music boxes were first around 1800 and then disc based music boxes were invented in the later 1800s which allowed new songs to be played on a music box machine - similar to a vinyl record. Mechanical music machines using paper sheets or wooden cobs were also available (player pianos, roller organs, etc.). Then gramophones came along and finally record players that played 78 rpm records. Kind regards, Troy Duncan.
I looked online to buy this music box, but couldn't find it anywhere. Is there any place I could get it? Where did you get it?
Please visit my website which is listed on the video description.
Singing bird boxes can you make a greensleeves music box cause I ordered one
Reuge are one of the last high-quality Swiss makers of new cylinder musical boxes.
Thank you for sharing this nice interchangeable box with us!
Ineffable…hauntingly beautiful!!! The arrangements are a wonder!!!
Whoever made this music box is a genius.
As a classical musician, if I was rich I would love to have one of these in my living room. I do not have the ability of site, but based on the way this sounds online I can hardly imagine how it would sound up close. I have always had a liking for mechanical things like music boxes and clocks, but never have I heard something so melodious in my lifetime.
if i was rich i would buy a lot of cocaine

Music... Its the most beautyful art... Young or old... Would you not agree?
89BlackGatomon I totally agree!❤️
True
I love music boxes! I kept few of my dear Mother's when she departed in the '70's ♡♡♡
I was like WOW this is so cool!!! I would like one!
...then i saw the prices
how much cuz ill save money i really want to start a collection
Benson Gobel THE 4 72 note music boxes tend to go for the thousands of dollars. I’ve seen prices ranging from 3,000 to 7,500. I also want to start a collection, so I should probably start saving now because they’re not getting any cheaper 😂
@@anukay7854 You can get some antique Swiss cylinder boxes from the 19th century for less than that, even in fairly nice playing condition, depending upon how fancy or rare of a box you get (what type it is). I am not putting down Reuge since they make high quality instruments indeed, but a lot of these old boxes need good homes and it sounds like you're on a budget. So for me that would be the way to go. You can save up for a new Reuge afterwards ;)
i come back to this video every once in a while
its nice
What an amazing piece of kit there!!! I enjoy anything mechanical
Sounds very beautiful, and I find it fascinating that each cylinder is able to fit 3 tunes into one
I think someone should put a small music box in a time capsule. How wonderful would it be to hear this in 1000 or even 3000 years from now. :)

THESE ARE WONDERFUL! NEVER SEEN ANYTHING THIS PROFESSIONAL AND OUTSTANDING!
How beautiful this instrument is, I have had the pleasure of seeing many of these wonderful things here in Australia all original Swiss and German models including Reginas ,Polyphons Automatic changers and Reproducing Pianos when I was involved with collectors of mechanical music but I've since retired however many many thanks for the wonderful video. Jim from Australia.
I like how you can see which notes are being played by the flash of light on the tines as it's lifted by their respective pins.
Ah! Wonderful melodies! Pleasant and enjoyable! Some antique wall clocks and bracket clocks played tune on built in music-box mechanisms like this just before or soon after striking the hours on small cup shaped bell or thick and hard coiled wire chime (gong). Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains circuit board of electronically recorded and programmed sound chips connected to speaker. But they can't beat the real chimes and music-boxes like this.
What a quaintly charming little box of tinkles.

Beautiful historical piece. lovely.
This is amazing.
I could listen to it every day and minute
Such a clever way to automate music before they found radio or records. Sounds pretty good actually.
Thank you.

l love music boxes and your is just beautiful, you did an outstanding job on restoring it
Thank you.
*Гениальные конструкторы создали такую сложную и точную механику!* 👍
Absolutely beautiful and fascinating music box. I would love to see a chart of it to see if a replica can be made or if humanity has lost the skill to build something like this.
We still craft such treasures today.
What a beautiful re-furb, sound and I want one... How much? The only down side, if you play this outside your house, all the children come looking for the ice cream man... LOL. Thanks for sharing, you've made my day.
What a beautiful machine.
Always be yourself, unless you can be a unicorn and then always be a unicorn :)
It is so impressive! The thing is it doesn't look like it could hold 3 songs.

So innovative! When was this music box assembled? The design is mind boggling, given its craftmanship! Thanks.
I like all the music from music box 😍😍😍😍
I am playing with one now, it says Sankyo Japan on the innards but on the outside it says China, pretty cool how these things worked, mine wasnt working when I wound it and I almost broke it forcing the gear till I realized if I flick the governor it would play, now it works lol these things are impressive
How amazing music machine! Beautiful classic music arrangement.I wonder how its made.
Tchaikovsky. Glorious!
it was cool when the light was reflecting off the teeth of the comb just right, as to make them appear to blink as plucked..
الالات الميكانيكية الذكية او مايسمى بالصندوق العجيب .
awesome and relaxed
Dark joel: wow this is my sort of style
It really is fabulous
The wear on the pins for the high notes must be great as it would be harder to pluck than the lower notes.
This brings to mind my old boss Pat Muir (of Bozotronics) tuning up reed pianos.
Similar concept.
Absolutely beautiful!
wow so beautiful👍👍💙
Oh joy! Such beautiful machinery that is still on this Earth thanks to people like you. I just bought an old vintage General Electric RP 3060A Portable Two Way Radio & Phonograph/Record Player thing from the sixties. I'm really excited, any recommendations on which record album I should get?
So so so beautiful !!!!
Simple and genius
I was looking at it trying to figure out how it got the 3 songs. The comb "wires" looks so wide. But if you really look, the ends of the comb that get plucked are a tiny point leaving more than enough room for 3 tracks each slightly off to the left or right. But that also must make keeping it aligned properly somewhat of a chore. This thing moves 1/32 of an inch and won't play anything.
Amazing, congratulations!!
Thank you.
목소리도 음악도 전부 좋아요ㅠㅠ
That’s cruelly awesome 😍😍
I would like to have the music box play by itself when the power goes out
The only way to do that would be to add an electrical switch thereby negating the concept of a true 100% mechanical music piece :)
Thanks to the Engineer Guy I now understand they come inside a wooden box.
So beautiful. Thank you ❤️

Singing bird boxes I had a beautiful music box I bought 20 some yrs ago in Wisscassot sp? ME. A German or Austrian man had a museum. I went in. And he played his music boxes. I started to cry because they were so beautiful. He ended up selling me a small beautiful one. With two motions. Both my fav Beethoven songs. I guess I was 26? I only paid maybe 500. It was well worth much much more. He was being generous. He showed me many things. He had so many. I divorced my husband and he never gave me the music box. I hear it sits in the basement and collects dust. No one ever plays it ☹️ I even offered to buy it. But while I had it. Boy. It just took me to another world 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
to be honest, i want those fuckers back they fill me with nostalgia wierdly, but even with them here, it would be amazing with an easily editable one where you can make your own songs
Not possible mechanically unless you had a full machine shop.
@@troyduncan1969 oh, okay
you really need to make those 6 silver bolts evenly turned using some washers or something. they made the box look cheap
You aren't a very wise person
Not a professional but I've messed with music boxes before, and I'm pretty sure those screws have something to do with the tuning of the comb.
You wouldn't tell a guitarist to line up their tuners, would you? Same thing here.

That actually jump scared me LMAO
I wasn't expecting to here the fnaf freddy tune (idk the songs real name)
It's called Toreador March
Sound system of the past.
Beautiful
so beautiful!
Thank you
Yes, please expand on the mechanism, and explain how you get multiple songs on one drum? I am a metal and woodworker who needs a challenge! Thank you for the great video. BTW, is the box made of mahogany (a very good wood for musical instruments)?
Oh god, It's beautiful !!!
I don't know if I'm missing something or I'm just not comprehending this right, but how are there 3 songs on one cylinder? Like I was watching it and each song seems to be equivalent to the entire cylinder turning around once. So like.... How..... I'm super confused. But regardless, it has a very beautiful case and I love the songs that it has. There is just sonething super charming about music boxes.
Excellent question Kaida. The better music boxes have what is referred to as a "shifting cylinder". Each cylinder is actually programmed with multiple songs which are represented by the tiny pins on the cylinder. Some music box cylinders have 18 or more songs programmed onto one cylinder. A snail gear slides the cylinder less than 1mm to the right after a song finishes and then a different set of pins strike the comb teeth representing a new musical arrangement (song). when the last song is played, the cylinder snaps back to point zero to start once again. Make sense?
he sounds like the manager in FNaF Sister Location haha
wonderfull indeed
Oh wow man this is so very fascinating.😃
This is so nice.. Thanks for sharing
This is amazing, I love all of these songs ^w^
Heard first song, flashback to Paw's Music Movies, triggered by rhyming Once with ONCE
First cylinder sounds like Disneyland Cinderella castle. Almost the exact same sequence iirc.
Этот мужчина говорит прямо как актеры у нас на записях для экзаменов по английскому, с утрированными акцентами. Так по-родному звучит, пахах.
So basically they had the same idea or pattern.. To create a portable musical player. Just like our mp3 players today.
The only difference was the creator put the complexity in the mechanical design, not programming a software as we have today.
Quite advance tech in that era. And it is surely a very expensive "gadget" for the rich segment @ that time.
Music is timeless beauty.
the first one for some reason made me think of a creepy ending to a yandere game
1:53 i love you , i walked with you once upon a dream
Wonderful 👌 👌
2:11 The Nutcracker: Act 1 March
*Someone really wasn't fuckin around when they made that!*
We still make them.

I wonder how they made this cylinders back in time ++
Magical
That's awesome
¡Que joya Señor!
2:12 , what's the name of the music???
THE SECOND I HEARD THE SECOND CYLINDER I KNEW IT WAS TOREADORS MARCH FROM FNAF 1
Wow. Amazing.
I think that you should handle those barrels using gloves instead of your bare fingers since bodily fats put stains on brass parts.
Most Reuge music boxes crafted after 1970 are lacquered.
4:22 oh nah I hear the griddy being done
Is there also any hand crank(without winding up) 72-note music box?? 🙂
Awesome!!!!!
Sleeping beaty, Nutcracker,Rigoletto. But what are the names of other songs?
Never seen anything like it, I wonder how much time and effort it would take to make one of these or at least something simular?
a lot.
This was the IPod 1800's edition.
