Stacey I had the honor of being at this show. I was in the Air Force stationed in California. Iron Maiden played Long Beach Arena 4 nights in March of 1985 and sold out every show without radio AirPlay, without mtv, with protest about their music being satanic. I attended 3 of the 4 shows and since have seen them 19 times. If you get the chance you HAVE To go see them live. The crowd alone is worth the price of admission. Everyone in their Maiden shirts from throughout the years. The album is Live After Death. One of the best live albums ever produced. Up the Irons Stacey!

This song's epic poem inspiration is written by the same English poet who wrote an unfinished poem in an opium-haze which inspired Rush's song 'Xanadu' ... which I notice you have not seen. Rush's live version of 'Xanadu' from their 'Exit ... Stage Left' live dvd is legendary, not only is it one of Rush's best songs and live performances, it pretty much ranks up there with any live performance. You'll love it. Thanks for the reaction, Iron Maiden's 'World Slavery Tour' - which this performance is pulled from - was my first concert experience at age 15, then I saw them again at Red Rocks the next Summer. It was life-changing.

The earliest live concert video for Iron Maiden was filmed in late 1980 when Paul Di'Anno was the vocalist... There were a couple of earlier gigs filmed at Ruskin Arms and the Marquee Club in 1980 (They were not the best quality though) when Dennis Stratton (guitar) was briefly in the band in 1980.
The 'Live at the Rainbow' video showed early Iron Maiden performing songs from their first 2 albums, which included 'Wrathchild'... 'Phantom of the Opera' ... 'Killers' ... 'Remember tomorrow'... w/ the line-up of: Di'Anno (vocals), Steve Harris (bass), Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (guitars) and Clive Burr (drums)

Bruce is the Energizer Bunny who keeps on going and going!! Lol.. The bass player Steve Harris has always been the main driving force for Maiden. They are basically his band. He has always been the main song writer and when you see him mouthing the words, it's likely he wrote the song. You mention the distinctive sound of the band, and that would be Harris's galloping bass style, a trademark of any Maiden song!

Nicko's drum kit hasn't appreciably changed in 40 years. The only differences between the kit here and what he uses now are a ride cymbal & the two chinas in the back & the chimes. Outside of that, its pretty much the same. Same number, sizes, & configuration of the drums themselves. As far as the song goes, it was written by Steve Harris, the bass player, who has written about 85-90% of their songs. I remember reading an interview with him where he said he got the idea for the song because he read the poem in school as a kid. The song is faithful to the poem & a few of the lyrics are direct quotes from the poem.

I was lucky enough to see Iron Maiden perform 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' live in concert in 2008 on the 'Flight 666' tour (They had not performed it live since their 1986/ '87 tour) ... and u can check out that live clip from that tour as well 🤘🤘
This clip was from their 80's heyday on their 1984/ '85 'World slavery' tour (Their 1984 album was called 'Powerslave') which was captured on film and audio for their live record (and concert video) 'Live after death' in 1985 when Iron Maiden was a 5-piece band (Vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, and drummer Nicko McBrain)
Nicko McBrain (drums) joined Iron Maiden in 1983 (He replaced drummer Clive Burr) for their 4th album 'Piece of Mind' and has been the band's powerhouse drummer... His kit was always built very high because McBrain is a tall fella, and the audience at Maiden concerts unfortunately never get a good view of him playing live but he's got a following...
Steve Harris (bass) is the band's founder/ co-producer/ songwriter and from day 1, he has always been a manic performer onstage and gives 100% of his energy! His drive & dedication has been Maiden's constant boon since their inception in 1975 in the pubs of London.
Some of the more 'epic' songs by Iron Maiden that became live favorites included -
'Sign of the Cross' ... 'The red and the black' ... 'The Clansman' ... 'Paschendale' ... 🔥🔥

Another band to consider (which I noticed you've reacted to one of their video's already) is Sabaton who mainly do songs about historical battles with no political bias in the song, they also have a History Channel where they talk about the details behind the songs.
Edit: When you smile at some of the lyrics is beautiful (at least in my own opinion)
Edit 2: For an even more insane drumset try looking at some live Def Leppard video's with their one armed drummer who drums with his feet. He sadly lost the arm in a car crash and the band despite getting a temporary replacement drummer worked with him along with his preferred drum manufacturer to get him back up to speed, at one concert the temp drummer couldn't make it to the gig so he had to step back in and rocked it. I've seen them live and it was a stonking (amazing) concert, the support act was Terrorvision.
Edit 3: Iron Maiden also has two songs for which they have two official videos (that I am aware of) the Live Version and an animated version by Kamp Kaos, The Trooper and Run To The Hills.
Edit 4: Bruces vocals are still as powerful after he beat throat cancer in 2016.
Edit 5: I've been lucky enough to see them live supported by Rob Halford (of Judas Priest fame), boy did I destroy my voice by caterbellowing along with Robs & Maidens songs, to the point that just after the concert I could only whisper croak when talking.
Edit 6: from vague memory the song was pretty close to the poem.
Edit 7: I hope you do manage to get to see Iron Maiden Live as their concerts are amazing.

Recommendation off of (Piece of Mind) Album: "Where Eagles Dare" &/or "Revelations" are high on my fav list.
Also check out for sure: "Infinite Dreams" off of (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) album

I am so happy to see a younger generation appreciate the music that I grew up appreciating - it confirms my belief that I haven't been crazy all this time - just a loyal metal fan for 4 decades. Also for 4 decades these talented artists have toured the world over and over sharing their craft with anyone and everyone. Up the Irons! 🤘

    Nice reaction! 👍
Surely the bass guitarist loves this song, he is "the boss" and he's written it! 😅
He is such an amazing underrated song writer - I don't see people who are experts in music mentioning his name when they talk about the best rock song writers!
And, as a bass guitarist, he is awesome, too! He and Geddy Lee (Rush) are the world's greatest bass guitarists, in my opinion.
You said you were impressed by the drummer's performance; I'm gonna tell you a funny story: when I got to know Iron Maiden, I was a teenager and they had just released their 4th album, "Piece of mind", and me and my school mates, we had loved their previous albums, "Killers" and "The Number of the beast" and we used to comment Maiden had such a good drummer - Clive Burr, who left the band just before "Piece of mind", and I remember we asked "Who is this Nicko McBrain? He's got such a weird name!" Today I gotta tell you I've seen Maiden live in Rock in Rio 2021 and in Rock in Rio 2022, when Nicko's performances made me believe he is the best drummer live!
Referring to the lyrics, I don't know if you know, Bruce is graduated in History - it probably helps when composing songs about events and civilizations.
So, I recommend for you to react to: "Alexander the great"; "The flight of Icarus"; "The clansman"; "Powerslave"; "Aces High"; "Phantom of the opera".
I also recommend those hits I love the most: "Wasted years"; "Infinite dreams"; "Stranger in a strange land"; "The prisoner".
Nice journey for you and, as you're already a Maiden's fan...up the irons! 🤘
