    Maybe one of the most beloved songs by Iron Maiden, Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the album Power Slave. This was a special for Burch and you get to hear his impression of the spoken word during the interluded.

    We were reading the poem for my British Literature class. It was in the syllabus at the beginning of the semester and I didn't know at the time the Maiden song was based a poem and I exclaimed to the teacher that Iron Maiden had a song named this. Like she knew what I was talking about. The album had come out only a few days before the start of the semester. So when it came to reading this in class the teacher allowed me to bring in the song to play for the class. I wrote the lyrics down and the teacher made copies for everyone in class. The teacher actually got into the song and liked it. Great teacher.

    The two most enduring literary moments would be the phrase ‘An Albatross around my neck’ basically meaning something you’ve done that now weighs on you like an anchor, dragging you down.
    And the other one is the phrase ‘Water Water everywhere nor any drop to drink’.

    Greetings and Love from Germany again 💚...great reaction like always. As you mentioned 'this is what not to do if..' from 'Live After Death' i hoped you would show her the whole little speech from Bruce before the song. You know..' it was written while under the influence of drugs. Not the drug that he only take...the goold old cup of Tea..."😅 ..'and the Queen of England, Victoria with her terrible periode pains.'
    However, have a peaceful day, my friends 😊❤

    Great reaction and thanks for sharing. I was exposed to the poem in 6th grade as our schools back then were still attempting to teach a somewhat classical education. The thing I don't think she understands is Iron Maiden was not played on radio or so very rarely played and the long songs just were never played. So listening to the album while reading the sleeve was the only option for most of us for most of Iron Maiden's songs. Iron Maiden became huge world wide because they had to tour and produce great albums just to survive as the Corporations were against them from the beginning and that had to do with the fact Iron Maiden would not be corporate slaves to the music industry and did their own thing. This is why the greatest selling metal band of all time is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are blacklisted by the corporations that run it, just like radio did, etc. You ever wonder why Pandora doesn't have Iron Maiden available and the same for most streaming services. Because the corporations don't own Iron Maiden and their songs in a slavery contract like they do for most other artists. Great choice with the lyrics. Thanks, Chris

I was a junior in high school in like 1991 and I remember when the teacher told us we would be reading Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner and I was like “Oh I know all about this already” and she didn’t believe me. So I started quoting the lyrics from the song, not telling her that I knew it from a song. The teacher was blown away. Here’s this moron metalhead with long hair in this AP English class where he obviously doesn’t belong and yet he knows the subject already? I never told her why I knew it either. It felt too good knowing that I was defying a stereotype.

    As a Frenchman, I can say that Bruce taught me more English than any of my teachers. I can't believe it was almost 40 years ago... How lucky I was to have Iron Maiden as the soundtrack to my life. The quality of the musical compositions and lyrics, the power and mythical duets of Adrian and Dave, the bass line of Steve, Clive and Nicko... There's a before and an after to Iron Maiden, and I'm betting that 200 years from now (if mankind doesn't self-destruct by then) there'll still be curious people to marvel at their genius.

  • @robertkennedy5414
    @robertkennedy5414 9 месяцев назад +3

    This was Steve's Maiden voyage (yeah, I did it. I made a pun out of it) into progressive music, weaving an epic song from a classic poem. They would venture down this road as well on some other tracks on this album and Somewhere In Time and finally in Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, their first concept record. This would serve as inspiration as well for countless progressive metal bands like Dream Theater to forge their own career paths in this vein. It's why Powerslave will always rank highly on my favourite albums of all time.

    • @emanemanrus5835
      @emanemanrus5835 9 месяцев назад

      Well, I agree this rendition of the poem is a "progressive" song, in the sense it's long and does not show an usual structure. But a progressive attitude was ever within the band since the 1st album, think about Phantom of the Opera, and so on. "Killers" itself has a lot of "prog-ish" moments, songs with strange structures, technical interludes, timing & rhythm changes... And the rest is history.

    The story is based on Cooks third voyage to the Pacific.
    One of crew members left life at sea and turned to teaching. In one of his class was a young, C K Chesterton who was enamoured with the stories of life at sea. The poem was inspired by those stories.
    The spoken bit was a passage of the poem.
    I worked in the Mitchell library and the story was confirmed by an academic fellow who was researching for his English language doctoral thesis

    The best live version of this song is the Flight 666 version. Bruce’ voice sounds better than the Live After Death version, and the energy and crowd action is through the roof. Plus the 3 guitar lineup kind of beefs up the sound quality significantly. Just an all around impressive performance.

    This is my favorite _Iron Maiden_ song. 🤘
    It's a masterpiece.
    I _love_ the interlude.
    The pacing of this song is phenomenal as well.
    And I'm like this guy in that this band got me into both recent and ancient world history.
    Our English teachers also wondered why us long hairs were so interested in those subjects. 😝
    P.S. And what is _truly amazing_ is how Bruce incorporates all of those very complex lyrics into the rhythm section of the song! And I dare you to find repeated lyrics! At least in the way they're worded, anyway; I don't believe there are any!
    P.P.S. I was one of the lucky few thousand that attended that _Powerslave_ tour on those four days at Long Beach Arena, where they taped _Live After Death._ I was only 16 at the time. 🤘

    Y'all ought to do Rush's Xanadu inspired by another Coleridge poem.

    I remember reading some of this in school, but never really read the whole thing, and I remember hearing this in concert, BUT I never paid attention to the words, because as a bass player, I was too busy watching Steve Harris! Thanks for going with this version, because at 59 years of age, now I pay more attention to the words and this was my first time to really HEAR the lyrics! Go figure!

    When introducing someone to a song, you should ALWAYS do the studio / lyric version first. Live performances lose so much detail and do not have the same impact for a first time listener. Live comes later.

    You're welcome ...so much... for letting us join you
    And nice call using the lyric version! It's easier to feel what the artist intended us to feel when we know exactly what's being sung

    Iron Maiden is being robbed by not being in the rock & roll hall of fame. One of, if not the greatest, rock bands ever.

    I like that you didn’t do the live version. Not that live versions aren’t good. But people hearing the music for the first time should hear the album version in order to fully appreciate it first I think. I usually stop reaction videos if they’re doing the live version.

    another example of band to do the lyrics video is Cradle of Filth, first his voice is those extreme scrams and their lyrics are extremely complex, sometimes using old English
