late reply, but this game was mostly forgotten because it came out for the original Playstation after the PS2 released. The same went for FF6 which is considered to be the best of the series: it came out for the Super Nintendo just before the Playstation released.
Agreed. I never understood why none of my friends at the time liked FF9 like I did. I liked how they did a throwback to a simpler system yet masterd all the parts that make FF the greatest RPG series.
Clearly it got underrated cause of its childish appearance and design but was really mature in fact with lots of philosophical parts and character's own existantial quests, tons of humor and epic moments definitely one of the best ff still Just regretted that part in Pandemonium where too much happened too fast imo and Garnet who tends to be annoying for most (Eiko was much more interesting as a female summoner)
A "masterpiece" is an understatement for this time in our generations history. If you culminated all things in written history that attempted to match one another, this would be the literal one and only thing that stood out over them all. We don't have a word yet that matches what was achieved in this moment.
After 16 years, I just realized the scene where Zidane and Garnet swing by is probably a nod to FF8's Rinoa and Squall scene where Squall swung to save Rinoa from falling.
And that's the last we will see of Alexander. I'm not even kidding, all that build up towards Alexander since the freaking beginning, such as the opening FMV emphasis shots focusing on Alexandria Castle which the strongest Gaia Eidolon seems to be connected with, the pieces of the Alexander jewel, especially Garnet's pendant which the FMVs also had some shots of (the pendant is even on the game over screen!), and Alexander's whole role was to just to have one cool scene and then get easily devastated and blown up by the Invincible and drops out of the rest of the story, never appearing again with few mentions, the rest of the game might as well be considered a completely different story (which will definitely feel like it when Terra is thrusted in), and the whole thing will be rendered even more pointless once we get to the "Kuja goes Trance" part. Also keep in mind of the story-breaker power that is the Invincible because it causes some of the biggest plot holes in the game.
I always wished they had included a way for Garnet and Eiko to summon Alexander in battle. I mean, Garnet can still summon Bahamut and he was literally incinerated, lol. It would've been a cool idea if you had to have both of them in the battle party and give them a conditional where they both had to be in Trance in order to summon Alexander.
Manu858585 Looks more like an energy pillar generated by two opposite-spinning rune discs. Which in Final Fantasy is basically the same thing as a nuclear bomb.
timlamiam Ya I know what you mean.. the style of color.. and costume.. the design of everything was just so different. I feel like 12 and 13.. and 10 a bit is so upbeat and happy but when you take a look at 7, 8, and 9 it's so much darker. That's what made FF for me
Mohn Blume Simple really. 13 was sooo different from the classics that liking the old ones doesn't mean you'll like 13. 13 was a stupid game. You follow the objective dot for the whole game, and for the fights, you sit and watch.
Well the pieces of the structure are all falling slower than free-fall, so maybe they are held aloft by the force field, thus enabling some relative gravity which is how they were able to stand on the falling fragments rather than floating off? Or plot armor. It's probably plot armor.
So like, around the 10:13 mark, did Alexander kill itself (or did Garnet inadvertently do that?) just before Garland blasted it? Tis the one thing I never got about this game!
If you remember, at the end of disc 2, Kuja summons the Invincible ship and makes Bahamut go against its summoner, the Queen Brahne. Here, Garland is doing the same thing against Alexandre. Garland makes it go against Eiko and Garnet, its summoners, attacking them by destroying the castle and their platform. After that, it's presumed that Alexandre vanished and Garland releases his ultimate attack.
As far as I know, Alexander knew that Kuja wanted to do the same with him as he did with Bahamut. He knew Bahamut was not the true enemy, that is why he didn't kill it (you can still summon Bahamut later in the game). Before they could take control of him and force him to destroy his summoners and the kingdom he was supposed to protect, he uses the crystal on Alexandria's castle to kill himself. The explosion that comes after was caused by Garland using the Invincible, to get rid of Alexandria and the two summoners that were still alive, as he did in Madain Sari. PD: sorry if you see any mistake. I'm still learning English :p.
when Dagger/Garnet and Eiko have their hands together summoning Alexander it makes me think of the scene in Fairy Tail when Lucy and Yukino summon the 12 golden zodiac spirits. 2 summoners joined together in a similar way to perform a powerful feat of summoning to protect a kingdom
The Clash of everything SHOW! You mean the thing with the ginormous eye? That was the Invincible, an airship. Alexander was the castle/fortress with wings that got destroyed in the video.
@kronim True, but she got 2 names. 1 her adopted is Garnet & 2 her real is Sarah - She's a survivor along with her real mom after the destruction of Madain Sari. When they both reached Alexandria, Sarah's mom died. Sarah was aloned till she was found by the Alexandrian royals. They adopted her, they cut off her horn & name her Garnet & became part of the royal family.
Dagger is the name she chose after Zidane's weapon (a dagger) as a way to hide her identity from the Queen who was then actively hunting her for her powers.
Blood Raven indeed a bug when i came on this morning i looked at my channel and this guy says i should get all the facts straight and i was simple minded and....well i have no idea who this guy is and i have no idea what the **** he is talking about (pardon my french)
Zidane Get out of here while you can." "Go on, Vivi. Don't worry about me." "Someday, you'll probably do the same thing for someone who's really important to you." "Dagger is more important to me than anything else." Another idiotic moment of pathos for the sake of: Garnet and Eiko are at the top, and Zidane explains to the others for half an hour why he will go on alone (that is, he repeats the phrase "I can feel with my ass that it is necessary" in different variations). And all the rest of the characters give him an empty crappy remark as a parting word, as if it would help him. But in fact, all this nonsense with Eiko jumping and Zidane sending everyone away was just to insert two pretentious scenes into the game - with the two summoner girls and with Zidane saving his de-summoner-horned woman. Also I'm pretty sure Eiko, who is also up there, should be really important to Vivi, Zidane, but scew that, I guess.
9:35 This scene is pretentious, because in Lindblum this whole thing will be completely forgotten about, all that melodrama between Zidane and Garnet for the past few segments, when we were going through the coronation and that FMV of Zidane swinging with Garnet on a rope have been rendered even more pointless. All that build up and it all gets forgotten and swept aside for this dumb and wangsty "Garnet goes mute" subplot that Zidane isn't even instrumental in, the whole thing just arbitrarily fixes itself later, it's just another thing that gets in the way of the love story. Not to mention how this affects gameplay in battle during this point by having a halfway chance for Dagger to not perform an action.
Okay, I don’t care what kind of logic the game runs on or how much plot armor characters have, nobody should’ve survived that blast at the end. It looked like the equivalent of the Hiroshima bomb (minus the radiation). It baffles me how any of the townspeople survived without so much as a scratch.
I love it when Zidane rescues the girls: he gets a passionate hug from Garnet and she gets a mean glare from Eiko.
I swear, so jelly
this ff is so underrated. Simply a masterpiece!

The dichotomy of both the serene victorian beauty of the atmosphere and the destruction and chaos, was perfect in this game.
Gareth Adamson Agreed
The ironic dissonance.

Digged the game everywhere
But nothing
They added ark the gaia counterpart but Alexander would be so cool i would love to summon him
And too add something, Alexander is the only summon to break the damage limit

I loved this stylo of FF games. the new ones with the open world are nice. but not the same feeling.

Get the HD remake of FFX. Closest thing you'll get to a new classic FF in a while.
I don't hate the new games, but I loved the old PSX style, with "non 3D" towns, the world map classic style, secret places in world, etc. XD
