Hugh Manson and Muse’s Matt Bellamy have collaborated on dozens of guitars over the years. Many are one-of-kind Frankensteins with built-in Fuzz Factory circuits, sustainers, or onboard Korg Kaoss Pads.
Manson and Bellamy recently partnered with Cort to create the MBC-1 Matt Bellamy Signature model. While it’s largely based on Bellamy’s Manson MB1-S series, the Cort MBC-1 costs around 600 bucks-just a fraction of the Manson’s price. And even if it doesn’t have a built in Kaoss Pad like the original, it still boasts cool features like a video game-style kill button to enable some of Bellamy’s tone tricks.
Built Bellamy Tough
While the MBC-1 is relatively inexpensive, Cort didn’t cut corners. Some of that might be due to Manson’s involvement (which includes final setup and assembly). After serving as John Paul Jones’s guitar tech for several decades (and building some of JPJ’s custom basses) Manson and his team possess a wealth of knowledge and perspective.
Whatever the inspiration, the MBC-1 is replete with thoughtful design details. Locking tuners with thick, sturdy grips help ensure tuning stability. The irregular height of the machine heads creates an even break angle past the nut, improving resonance and eliminating the need for a string tree. I also appreciated the rout just past the last fret, which exposes the truss rod, facilitating fast and easy adjustments.

6:36, When you forget there is no whamy bar xD
Julien Sauteur Lol
I read this right as he did it
I thought Bellamy originally had Nintendo installed on his guitar.
in manson mb1 Matt bellamy signature there is a midi controller screen, and a sustainer, in dr1 there is only a sustainiac and in dl1 there is an internal fuzz factory, piezo pickup and internal phase 90, the most complicated guitar is manson 007 (blackie, black manson) in this guitar there is a midi strip, piezo, sustainer, internal fuzz factory and phase 90 and a zvex wah probe, he also has a guitar with lasers built in which is called the manson laser
Kaoss pad.
I respect the hair game
You must submit defeat.
It's worth adding on the fuzz + sustainiac + MBK 2 bridge pick, It's a total different guitar with this add ons, it's a beast
Would've loved to have heard some Muse based guitar licks!
Sounds like you can get some really cool versatility out of this thing. From bluesy tones all the way through to Bellamy/Morello style craziness with the kill switch.
The guitar is awesome, and Cort are stand up people. My first MBC-1 had a defect, and they replaced it for free. My replaced MBC-1 is perfect! Looks cool, plays great! I put a Bareknuckle Nailbomb in the bridge ( That's in the Manson version of the Bellamy signature) The neck PU sounds pretty great, I left it alone.
Best review of MBC. Sometimes blues are needed so we can review the clean sound.
Dig this one! Great price too!
That was a very interesting review !!!
I got one of those guitars, still sounds awesome and incredible sustain, even if I'm not a very good guitar player !
It sounds pretty darn good. You sound great too.
love this guitar!!!!
Ace Ventura in a wind tunnel.
Couldn't have said it better myself xD
Hi Folks. I had just bought a MBC-1. It's a nice little guitar but I am getting some string buzz on the 5th Fret on the bottom E. Any ideas how I can fix it without destroying the guitar? Thx for your help.
i got one for Christmas...its awesome.
hey, is the neck comfortable? it looks a little thikness
Its very comfortable...for me anyway. Like a fender strat.
On my list.
If you review a signature guitar, you've gotta at least play slightly in the style of the guitarist/bassist...
***** it doesn't really display the type of sound the musician wanted it to give tho rly
I'd love to see a demo of a Chapman... ML-1 ,3 or a Pro perhaps...
Can we install a tremolo system on this guitar?
Good review.....
Does anyone know the size (mm) of the kill switch button?
Hmm deciding between this at an ESP LTD EC1000 Vintage Black... any help? I looove Muse and rock in general. I can only play with the ESP at guitar center cuz I cannot find a Cort anywhere!
Master Toxos same, can't find this guitar in any store.
Yeah :/ I went and got myself an ESP LTD EC1000 Vintage Black instead. Pretty dang nice! A little bit more pricey though... But feels great. I would recommend looking into it :)
Master Toxos I know I'm a bit late but you can buy the Cort on the Manson website, and if you sae up a it more of can get fuzz factory and or sustainiac added, obviously it's a it of a risk buying online but I have it and it's great, only ting is that the lacer on the neck is quite strong, but it still feels fine moving from low to high on the neck, I would recommend.
Hope this helped ya out
Master Toxos ever heard of ESP Random Star and Snapper? Search it on google
Can someone reccomend and amp to go with this guitar?
Loco estas promocionando la guitarra de Matt Bellamy toca algún tema de muse aunque sea.
Help! would you choose this guitar or the Squier Vintage Modified Strat HSS?
G Meyer me personally, I’ll go with this on the virtue of the killswitch.
The clicking of the Killswitch when playing clean is normal, because your soundwave gets cut there and results in a clicking sound. When distorted the soundwave is more "edgy" so the cut is less noteable.
alexplorer.net/guitar/mods/killswitch.html
it really needs somebody to demo the thing rocking out,as
this really doesnt give much idea of what itd sound like for making a big glorious noise at all
Do you think this would be better than an Epiphone Les Paul Pro? Would anyone have an idea
I just bought this guitar and I implore EVERYone to at least try one. they're fantastic and have many uses besides just banging out Muse songs.
+KaisDragonBlade
Also the killswitch pop is normal on ANY clean killswitch sound, its not just limited to the MBC-1
Many uses? Can it unclog my drain?
Yeah, it also changes oil for free too
why didn't you play muse?
Why do all these guitar review guys play the same boring bluesy rock bullshit???
You would think to play Muse riffs if you're reviewing the signature guitar model of their frontman
Because more people like that boring bluesy rock shit than the shit you like.
Ben Willard but not the people in the market for a matt Bellamy guitar
i didn't get how he switch clean to dirty song , can someone tell me ? ^^
+J Muse He turned up the volume (knob)
Guys, I'm planning on getting this guitar. The budget's ~€1k so I can only get one upgrade. Sustainiac or Fuzz Factory?
Fuzz factory
Sustainiac, you can buy a fuzz factory separately later on
Where are Fretboard dots? Without them i would get lost.
On the side! So when you're playing it, just look down and you'll see them
Are you a reincarnation of the Fonz?
Oh god, I just want to know what it sounds like playing Hendrix so badly, please somebody tell me.
Great sounding guitar, but the hair is SLAMMIN'!!!
Unknown Hinson's long lost kid?
hahaha!!
No Kaoss Pad or Sustainiac? How can they justify putting Bellamy's name on this?
+Trey Douglass They'll throw some upgrades on it if you buy it from Manson. They'll through a Fuzz Factory and some other stuff in it. Give'm a few more grand, and get the REAL MD Sig by Manson.
+Trey Douglass
Because nobody would buy a $1000+ Cort. This was meant to be as budget friendly as possible.
+Trey Douglass The Kaoss Pad is not something Bellamy uses all the time, right now he uses it only for one song. And the Sustainiac would increase the price a lot, it wouldn't be a budget guitar anymore.
Love the Muse at $1K, I'm just not feelin it.
very good guitar and review ... u play very well but you destroy little wing at the begining ... i know u wanna turn into your style but this song is so sacred ... anyway continue like that :D
This guy reminds me of Mike Myers as Wayne from Wayne's World
great noodling john as always. gtr is cool too. $800? I'll pass.
Description says it's only $600.
+Josiah Bryan I saw several brand new on eBay for $550 with free shipping. I think it's a great price!
I don't understand why Manson just couldn't have these guitars built by World Musical Instruments Co. Ltd in South Korea, where they build the great quality PRS SEs, Chapman Guitars (I'm not a fan of Chappers nor of his guitars but they're top notch quality) and even some Gretsch models - they're great build quality, even matching or surpassing craftsmanship to western built guitars, and having their Manson logo on the headstock rather than built in Indonesia by Cort... I quite like this guitar, but I don't feel right about having the Cort logo on it regardless of how bad or good the quality is... It has an uncomfortable presence about it and of course manufacturing behind it too...
With Matt Bellamy being so anti-child slave labour and poverty, it kinda' makes you think how much h really knows about it all in the past... On those notes, it's a big no thanks!
One man can't know everything, they're main concern was probably to just get a good instrument out at a decent price for more accessibility. Also, this was Hugh Manson's idea, all Bellamy did was to give approval. Manson probably doesn't have the social-welfare know-how of Bellamy.
put an ebony board on it and I would buy one.. may just buy it and swap the neck out.. the kill swith is a one trick pony.. get rid of it and take the money saved on that and upgrade the neck to an ebony board and you will have a great guitar..
+Christopher Freedom
You're not saving anything from that. Probably $.50 at least.
+Christopher Freedom
Also, the majority of Matt's signature and custom Mansons have rosewood boards. it was his choice.
Blu It costs a lot more than 50 cents to install a kill switch.. yes the switch itself is probably only .50 cents but the extra routing. . Wiring and intallation is what you are paying for.. peace
Blu I get it.. I was just saying what my preferences would be.. to make it something that would interest me.. peace
You choose such bizarre things to play. Never like the use that te guitar was made for.
the signature guitar of a guy that uses a touch pad doesn't have enough room to install a touch pad
At the moment he most frequently uses guitars that resemble this one, with a tune-o-matic and no midi pad. If you want to be accurate, it's closest to the "Manson Matt Black"
This review is almost comically bad. This guy’s like “muse guitar gotta make sure to play sultans of swing”
Okay, not once did I hear a MUSE riff, I heard sultans, and some other blues stuff. Very dissappointed in this review.
When you review a rock guita rand play anything but rock.
Lol Jon struggling to highlight positive features on this guitar. The price of this thing is astronomical for what it is.
ultimately it's a budget friendly mb-1, I think this model is just more for the look, which I don't mind. The Bellamy signature series is pretty expensive. I want one because I love Muse, but I think imma go with small companies now and get custom guitars instead of paying 3 grand for a Gibson or a sweet Manson.
+yamatsukami94 normally i'm defending prices for midrange or "budget friendly" guitars but this guitar sounds bad and is stripped down compared to other guitars in the same price range. Cort knows it's preying upon fans of Muse.
+MuscleDad420 yeah, I wanna save up for a Gordon Smith Guitar. Might as well get a custom guitar for under a grand.
Sounds like they used a cheap POS switch for the kill. Expect that to fail in the middle of a gig leaving u silent
Bitch I'm Bill Bellamy!
That click on the kill needs sorting out, wont be buying one now
A dark body with a Rosewood neck...no.
+Phvro The fretboard (not the "neck") is rosewood, and having no markers on it is also quite jackass.
revolutionday1 The official name is actually a fingerboard since we're playing the pendantic game.
Oh? NOW you wanna' get technical...?
revolutionday1 oh i was born technical
Phvro
I wish you could see me, rolling my eyes at you, as I am doing it as hard as I possibly can.
Do Cort still use slave labour in their factory?
+Michael Fenton
From what I understand it is still a hell on earth
+Michael Fenton Probably!
yeah, but your low-mid end guitar probaby made in cort factory
diazzsama
They are all made in the same factory...... THey are all low end...... google the cort factory workers....
+Endezeichen Grimm It's not just Cort guitars... EVERY major guitar brand has, at some point, subcontracted with Cort to produce their guitars. Before the Cort "incident" happened, information on the source of production was a lot easier to come by. These days, guitar companies are a lot more tight lipped about what company and factory actually made your guitar - with the exception of PRS and World Musical Instruments, who proudly stamp their country AND factory of origin on the back of the headstock.
I just hate that it looks like First Act Les Paul/ tele copy :/
+mrFatalDemize It looks even more like a Godin.
Looks kinda cheap.
+Heath Watson Definitely.
+Heath Watson You probably only think that because of the matte finish. Wait for the red sparkle to come out...
And as if looks determine quality
+Zooropa_Station Not always but that rosewood and chrome hard ware look china/indo cheap
Heath Watson You can upgrade all that through Manson if you want. (hardware). And apparently Matt always uses rosewood, so it makes sense
if it almost sounds like a strat then just get a strat
Except it doesn't
This sound is shi... or toi😂😂😂
It sounds like shit! Totally unimpressed..
ACE VENTURA!!!!! Get a haircut man, its getting ridiculous!
+pete g JB owns your sorry ass.
