Before Metal Slug, there was Gun Force II.
This shooter bears an uncanny resemblances to the classic Neo Geo series of games, and no wonder: many of the team who worked on Gun Force II would later leave Irem to form Nazca.
The core gameplay template is very similar in that it features frantic shooting action, pilot-able vehicles, as well some of the best 2D artwork seen in a video game.
Unlike Metal Slug, however, players can climb ladders and hang from obstacles in a manner not dissimilar to some of the later Contra games. While it does add an extra dimension to the combat, it does make the controls more fiddly than they should be.
Even so, it's an amazing game to look at, as well as one that's pretty decent to play!

Guys THIS GAME CAME FIRST. It's devs went on to make metal slug. That's why you recognize metal slug in this game, but in reality, this game is recognizable in metal slug.

Hmm, a game where you're a muscular dude who's wielding a machine gun in each hand to rescue cheerleaders from aliens. It's so 90s.
Duke Nukem 3D?
This was the standard back in the 80's and 90's. Today it would be a female with green hair, shaved on the sides, and a males body, rescuing her ethnically diverse girlfriend while shooting hordes of toxic men.
80's, you wanted to say? The 90's were all about darkness, edginess, teen angst and complete assholes as heroes.

because the devs are the metal slug devs. they would create the metal slug series after this game, so the metal slug sound is not metal slug it's gun force 2.

This is probably my favorite arcade run and gun from the nineties, and the last arcade game by Irem before some of the developers go to Nazca and make "Metal Slug" two years later. It's just a pitty that the game has no ending and is endless loop, like in 80's arcade game. But what a great ride of fun and action !!! Over the top !!! I love it ! :)
This game has metal slug art style, but these devs took notes from classic Contra games too. Many of these enemies are inspired or damn near the same type with new uniforms on.

@@TheRaziel07 Gun Force (1) were more like Super Contra while Gun Force II is more like a predecessor to Metal Slug.
The detail is absolutely insane!!! Man, most modern video games absolutely suck compared to this. The care and love in each sprite frame is why lots of this 90s art is ageless.. it has love and care, it's beautiful.

Owlboy looks as good as this.
@@thecandlemaker1329 NOPE. Lacks the sprite variety and detail, as well as these sprites are pretty large as well(beyond bosses) with really detailed backgrounds. Animation is also several steps above Owlboy. Owlboy does look good tho.

The OST of this game was the base for almost the entire metal slug saga OST.
And the OST for this game are all but remixes for trackes from an even earlier game - Air Duel, also made by this same team.

The threat posed by the bosses of the game, consisting of only dots and line graphics, makes your hands and feet tremble throughout the game. I'd like to see the initial initiatives and setup of those bosses, but it's such an old game that there's no way to watch it

I will never understand why they removed the diagonal shooting in Metal Slug. It would've been even more entertaining and memorable. That's why I think Contra is better.
So, for reasons that may be obvious, i'm rather curious about the final boss; anyone got any details past the two obvious ones?

Yeah, it's a great run'n'gun, but I really don't understand why they went with such a choppy looking animation for main character in a 1994 game on a powerful arcade hardware? Was it just an awkward way to reduce slowdowns? I would honestly prefer better animation with less action on the screen, if that was the case, after all it's already showing way, way more than SNES and even Genesis ever did, so even if it all was a bit toned down it would still be a far more action packed experience than anything on consoles. But aside from animation it does looks very good, no doubt.

Well if anything it has a really cool final Boss and that part where you turned into like a Gundam was really cool wish there was more of that well you can see it totally ripped off metal slug but still a great looking game

And as far as games ripping off games that's what makes the video game industry go around technically every first person shooter on planet is a Wolfenstein clone although not the first it was the first to do it right and then we got doom and so forth and so on I mean platforming can be contributed to donkey Kong I mean look what souls did and now everything has to be rogue like so yeah that's what makes the video game industry go around

Both games are developed by the same people, and Gun Force 2 came earlier.
This game looks amazing, even better than Metal Slug IMO, but it needs the emulated CPU to be overclocked a bit.
Same dev team made this and metal slug. Metal slug came after this.
The only problem with these early Iren games is unlike Metal Slug they are just too effing hard. Gun Force and In the Hunt are just harder than any metal slug games to the point that they are not too fun to play.

Nope - touching enemies doesn't kill you, although they do damage any vehicle your in (which is why they blow up occasionally)
Pretty good, but it's obvious the level design is nowhere near as polished as the first Metal Slug
