The second game.
Also involves two muscular men (one shirtless) shooting aliens. Front flips are involved, as usual. This game has a weird jump mechanic, what with holding Up to jump higher. This ain't no Valis, yo!
I was expecting the big robo spider boss to appear D: (it's just the boss music. :3). Oh well.
Playing the game on Difficult (I thought I had the game on Very Difficult. D: Oh well. It is already done.) Weapons can be upgraded by picking up the same powerup twice. It Wasn't seen again until Contra 4. As usual, I get the spread because a kazillion things are going on.
Since I suck (and wanted to play on a higher difficulty), I abused teh states of saves or sumthin'. Emp'rer Devil Gava's parts take a lot of punishment. o_o Madness! -

You're just scratching the surface. The 80's had lots of gems.
Honestly these graphics are pretty crap compared to other arcade games of 1988. Take a look at some of Sega's 1988 offerings like Altered Beast or Power Drift.

They were far ahead of their time. They put their affection to this game.
I like how he just goes with the rhythm at 9:00.

They also give the rhythm from the shooting to the music near 9:15 or somewhere in that time
Those playful moments usually seem very rare in "Longplay" videos;
most Longplay videos just have the character do the essential stuff, and then the characters stand absolutely still or run forward like normal the whole time, so it is nice to see a Longplay video where the player actually goofs around a bit.
This is why you do not leave home without your spread shot.
Definitely one of the harder arcade games of its era, and that's saying something. Limited continues made sure that you never saw the endgame back in the day.

I'd love to hear a meeting between the weapons designers and the military brass in these games. "Sir, the good news is that we developed a super tank capable of striking fear into our enemies. The bad news is that it shoots really slow bullets and can only aim at a fixed angle, but we don't think this will be a problem if the enemy will agree to stand still.".

It blows my mind that while Contra III's best ending was flashing back to Bill and Lance's adventures, it was in fact giving a throwback to the attract mode of Super Contra. My experience with Super Contra was the NES port Super C, so it was just pure gameplay. Still a fun game, but happy to see the arcade footage!
Actually, Super C is the NES port of Super Contra.
I'd rather _Super C[ontra]_ be on the more powerful *_Super_** Nintendo* than the just older outdated N.E.S.
The explosions are so bassy, I love it!
Everthing explodes....Alien movie was like nightmare to Japanese...they just add more nightmares to the good ol nightmare.
Masterpiece game.
Hitboxes are not the same size as the character in most games. If bullets are flying everywhere and you control a huge sprite your hands and legs are usually immune to enemy fire.
You can see that in Doujin and Cave shooters as well as fighting games to balance the characters.
Enemy: Note to self... never buy slow moving bullet ammunition ever again

In my opinion, the best weapon is the super machine gun. It can be obtained on the first level; get the initial machine gun and then get the second one right before the helicopter. The super machine can work like a scatter gun if you move your gun up and down.
Spreads the best for me. Too easy

It's because of how arcades were designed back in the day. They could only make them so long.

It is, a freaking lot harder than any of the contra nes games. altough if you grab the super machinegun it becomes quite easy.

Well, I don't know if it has an official name, but in super contra when you pick 2 of the same weapon, it becomes an upgrade version. the only upgraded you can get at the 1st level is the machinegun, one at the beggining the other when fighting the chopper. Of course the spread does a magnificent work also.
It is, mostly thanks to the stiff controls.

"R" is for Rapid Fire which is now Ripple in Hard Corps Uprising.
"M" is for Machine Gun.
"B" is for Bulletproof or Barrier.
"F" is for Fire or Flamethrower.
"L" is for Laser.
"C" is for Crash shot or Crush.
and
"H" is for Homing or Heat-seeking Missile which is now Heated Plasma, "F's" replacement in Hard Corps Uprising.
The only four exceptions that don't use these letters or sometimes use colors or what they look like are...
Super Contra Arcade which is a guessing game.
Contra Hard Corps which only use Weapons A, B, C, and D depending on what character you use.
Contra Legacy of War which follows the same formula Contra Hard Corps only they use colors.
and
C The Contra Adventure which follows the exact same formula as Contra Legacy of War.
A damn fine arcade game. An even better NES game.

I always liked the bomb gun myself. I also like the enemy progression in this game. The first two stages are full of human (or at least human-seeming) enemies and mechanical bosses; the third stage starts out that way, but aliens start appearing near the end, and the boss is an alien monster; the fourth stage has humanoid but not human enemies, a bio-mechanical midboss, and another alien boss; and the final stage there's nothing even remotely human or technological about the enemies. Environmental storytelling at its best, without any dialogue.
So the regular grunts are actually infected humans, this is soo much better than the nes versión I played back in the day...
Well, this is the original version. But the only things that are worse than the NES version is the lack of stages and bosses, and the use of colors that makes the game looks washed out.
Contra and Super Contra has a whole lot of pop culture references.
Bill Rizer: Arnie from Predator and Commando.
Lance Bean: Sylvester Stallone from Rambo.
Enemies from stage 4, Xenomorph's from the Aliens movie and the stage boss is Alien Queen.
Yeah but in Contra 1 I think than Lance is Billy of Predator no?

Seeing this game just makes me realize how freaking good Contra 3 is. It took the best things from this game and made them much, much better

contra 3 on snes was awful. the game was just too difficult and certainly not made for an arcade experience.
It really was hard. I think I just got determined and played it on hard mode till I beat it. I think a fan did a hack so you can see the ending on normal mode. Game on brother.

Contra 3 is one of the best game in the series. It is much easier than Super Contra, has much better controls and access to the Bomb, which allows player to clear the screen from enemies at any time. And 3 difficulty setting.
It is problem with you now with the game.
both the arcade Contra games can be beaten in around 14 to sometimes under 11 minutes the hard part is getting there without being killed SEVERAL times over...
Also note that both games limit how may continues you get ( adjustable by the arcade operator. ) You can feed it all the quarters in the world but you WON'T credit spam your way to the end to make it to the end in both of these games you have to have the skill required. Nothing else will get you there.

The music in the arcade reminds me of the music in S.P.Y., another arcade game that Konami put out.
The Aliens all have such lovely smiles, with the teeth. They come out to do their shopping, and such things like saying hi to Lance/Bill. They just shoot all times.

@deansatan9573 The NES was a primitive machine, even by the standards back then. Jack Tramiel and Hiroshi Yamauchi ran their businesses with an iron fist and made sure their hardware was affordable for everyone right away. They didnt want top of the line hardware.
So Jagger Froid was himself the final boss on the arcade, interesting. I can also see system limitations neutered his ass on the NES.
Wow, what's that?! Unreal! Raw graphics, but really EXPLOSIVE vibe! NES version couldn't be like this, and this one is much harder than NES!!! Really incredible!
Arcade hardware was more expensive to produce than consoles. Console manufacturers kept costs low so they could get more units into people's homes, and sold consoles at a loss and made up for it later through cartridge sales. Konami made their own custom hardware (although most Japanese companies took hardware ideas from the Sharp X68000 computer).

I luved playing this in the arcade back in the day and the NES version which I like better because Konami added a Couple of stages I even got to play this on XBOX 360 arcade and dowloaded and played it Konami was ahead of it's time! :)
This is what I call pro gaming
One of the rare cases where I actually think the NES version is better than the arcade version, even though the former is technically inferior. IMO the NES version is so much more fun to play, and I think the controls are better too.
I think if I remember right, the NES port had more levels and bosses as well. Kind of weird they made the arcade version so short. I never played Super C at the arcade, but did play the original COntra, and I really didn't care for it. The NES port had so much tighter controls, even if it was graphically inferior to the arcade.
@@jeffjackson9679 Konami cared a lot about graphics in their arcade games (and sound). However, they let processing speed and memory capabilities take a back seat in order to make the games not so expensive to make in case they were a flop.
Right? The NES version doesn't have that arcade-required "Lazy" aiming system.
