@@butteredtank9471 If you use any of Rotosound's Swing Bass strings, they are really easy to bend. I use the RS66LD's, which can bend easily. But Cliff used RS66LB's, which are lighter than the strings I use.
Cliff is considered one of the top 50 greatest bass players of all time and sadly passed at the age of 24. That is truly incredible. RIP Cliff, to this day he is sadly missed.
I got to see Cliff twice, the first time was in Frankfort Germany in the Volksbildungsheim place held around 1400 people and Metallica was the opening band for, wait for it Twisted Sister, and the second time was about two weeks later in a club in Mainz Kastel they were set up in a corner of the club it didn't even have a stage.
He was a true master of his art... Until this day I haven't seen anyone wield the bass like that and I'm afraid that I never will see such virtuosity again. Jason and Robert are no slouches at it, but even they struggled with the album version of this song... While Cliff right here is adding all sorts of sugar and spice on top of the original version live... All while headbanging away hard!!!
I clicked on this video for 2 reasons: Cliff is amazing and it's cool you're reviewing this. Love Metallica always and forever 2. You're wearing a 9ers hat and I've been a die hard 9er fan for 30+ years and I'm only 40 lol. Go 9ers this year is our year to finally get that modern Lombardi we have not been able to seal the deal on the last 10 years lol. Nice man!! *edit* You are correct it is a wah pedal cliff played baseline a lead guitar he was very innovative and he was schooled in music theory and loved classical music and all kinds of other music. The dude was amazing and a true loss to the entire planet. R.I.P.
Cliff Burton was 13 years old when his older brother 16 year old Scott Burton passed away from a cerebral aneurysm. Scott played bass guitar & from that point in time Cliff vowed that I am going to be the best bassest that I can be for my brother. Now God has both of Scott & Cliff an there jamming out for God. One time in an interview with James Hetfield. One question to James who was in his 40's, was asked who do you want to be when you grow up. James said I want to be Ray Burton. I too want to be Ray Burton when I grow up. Ray is everything great rolled up into one.
I got to see Cliff once down in Dallas. You should check out Orion it was his masterpiece as he also showed Kirk & James how to form harmonies that create that Metallica sound. Creeping Death live in Moscow is another must view although Cliff had passed by this point. R.I.P.
May 13th 1986, tingley colesium albuquerque, nm. Never forget the images burned into my frontal lobe like a projector forever of metallica and esp cliff ,completely destroying, at the height of my met worship. Best show ever and cant even remember 1 song ozzy played that night
One of my biggest influences R.I.P cliff I'm not good at bass but I love guitar I'm currently trying to convert it to guitar but I dont have tabs I'm half way but this song is really hard
Orion will make you cry..... Bass heavy all istrumental song, like 7 minutes + . Old pre black album Metallica was truly something legendary, masters of transition
One thing that should be pointed out about Cliff, he never played this piece the same way twice. Watch every gig there is on RUclips or elsewhere.... All different.
Just found this video. Cliff was one of the best. If you would like to see another legendary bassist from the hard rock, heavy metal genre check out Billy Sheehan. He is fast and very technical.
Yeah man! RIP Cliff. If you'll listen to the album version, you hear the wah-wah more clearly. I remember the news when Metallica had just been touring in Finland and then they went to Sweden where the unfortunate accident happened. That was a great loss to the world of music.
I scanned the comments and didnt see any1 name the effects pedal, Its called a Mog or Moge pedal, (heard the word, dont know the spelling) very obscure for that time, distortion, reverb and chorus all rolled together from what I can remember. the 80s where a long time ago..LOL
You should watch some solos of Newsted. I really think he was about as good as they could have gotten to step into that role. Cliff was one of a kind, but Newsted is a next level bassist as well.
Metallica is amazing their first 4 albums and epic and legendary the black album is the black album 30+ million sold as a heavy metal artist is no small feat, and the load albums have alot of good stuff, death magnetic is killer, hardwired is good and the latest album is really good. They have alot of good music you should explore all their stuff you won't be disappointed.
@@BlackRoseImmortal In this time he used a morley wah fuzz pedal (he later switched this to a wah boost pedal). a lot of people like to say he used a big muff but that is incorrect, the fuzz in the wah pedal came first so the fuzz was almost like it's own pedal in the chain, meaning you wouldn't need a secondary distortion pedal
@@BlackRoseImmortal He did not. At this time he would've been using a Morley Power Wah Fuzz pedal. Most people like to say he used a EHX Big Muff, but there's a lot of evidence disproving that, at least for live shows. The Wah Fuzz pedal has the fuzz circuit before the wah, meaning you wouldn't need a distortion or fuzz after or before it to drive the wah. He used a lot of amp gain too.
You know Cliff actually wrote a lot of their earlier stuff and was centric to their recognizable sound, and if you've never noticed, but almost all Metallica songs are based around their bass. That's why their bassists have always been front and center. Also Metallica was the first band to really front their bassist and let them rip. Cliff had that distortion all the way down lmao. Lars and James thought Cliff was a guitar player when they first herd him playing before he joined the band, he uses a cry baby wah pedal. Cliff the reason I picked up a bass guitar

Within a few weeks they hired Newsted and continued their tour starting in Vancouver on Halloween night with Metal Church opening for them. Since the Ozzy show was cancelled, anyone who had tix could exchange them for Metallica tix and it was an excellent show, first Metallica concert with Newsted, first time I dropped acid too.

I think its funny the fact that you put cliff WAS a greatest. I emphesized the was because he still is one of the if not the best bassist in my opinion.
Cliff standing there, bending strings that are as thick as #2 pencil leads...
I know with no problem, I wish I could've seen him live 😭😭 the video of him playing are so good
I play bass. I have often commented on the finger strength Cliff must have possessed. . . . Cliff used a Morley Power Wah Boost, I memory serves.
He used lighter strings they were pretty easy to bend but still impressive

Bass Boy J I use the 35 gauge R66LBs cliff used, there perfect for me and feel great as I play mostly metal
Then you realize this happened 35 years ago and start crying
And he has been sleeping on this band all this time lol...
@@ghost500e same here, i wonder how the band would have sounded today if he was alive.
40 now :(
Cliff Burton, the headbangers headbanger!

And he was only like 20 or 21 here.
Please you must react to Orion and The Call Of Ktulu two amazing instrumental songs by Metallica.
This blows my mind every time I watch it, as if I'm seeing it for the first time.

i don't know if it has been mention yet, Cliff is classically trained from a early age.

VH1 Behind The Music Metallica .. a must watch!!
Shit .. i got “ Cliff em all” the Christmas after it came out.. i dont remember that .. this must be an alternate version ...
He never played the songs the same way twice. He improvised a lot so you could go to 10 shows and it would be different every time.
Four Horsemen studio version with cliff and Creeping Death live Moscow 1991 not cliff though
the whole thing was the song, the early part wasn’t just improvising, the band doesn’t kick in until halfway into the song, same in the studio version
Billy Sheehan is really good too. Cliff is awesome and yes inspired so many musicians all over. Gonna check your other reaction videos
Cliff is the God of bass!!! The band Acid Bath also has bass God! Audie wrote most of the music n his craft shows!!! I’ll love this band
Doing an interesting unaccompanied solo is extremely difficult...he is one of the few that can hold the attention tightly.
