- Frank Zane (born June 28, 1942) is an American former professional bodybuilder and author. He is a three-time Mr. Olympia, and his physique is considered one of the greatest in the history of bodybuilding due to his meticulous focus on symmetry and proportion. Zane was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania on June 28, 1942. He started bodybuilding as a teenager after reading a muscle building magazine. He went from 130 lbs (59 kg) at 14 to 160 lbs (72.5 kg) at 17 through weightlifting. In 1964, he received a Bachelor of Science from Wilkes University. For 13 years, he taught mathematics and chemistry while living in Florida and California. He also taught mathematics at Watchung Hills Regional High School for two years. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Cal State LA in 1977. He was awarded a master's degree in experimental psychology from CSUSB in 1990.
Zane is a three-time Mr. Olympia (1977 to 1979). His reign represented a shift in emphasis from mass to aesthetics. Zane's physique featured the second-thinnest waistline of all the Mr. Olympias (after Sergio Oliva), with his wide shoulders making for a distinctive V-taper. He stood at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 m) and had a competition weight of less than 190 pounds when he won all three of his Mr. Olympias. He was given the nickname "The Chemist" due to his Bachelor of Science degree and, as he puts it: "Back in the day I took a lot of supplements and tons of amino acids. Still do. But back then it was pretty unusual. That's how I got the nickname The Chemist."
He famously trained with light weights which saw him to many victories but Joe Weider urged him to train with heavier weights. Zane then found the size necessary for success at the Olympia. After his three consecutive Mr. Olympia titles came the 1980 Mr. Olympia. Shortly before the competition he suffered a near-fatal accident and he lost 15 lbs (7 kg) of muscle mass. This saw the end to his reign, as Arnold Schwarzenegger controversially placed at the top of the podium in his comeback, with Zane in third.
Zane is one of only three men to have beaten Schwarzenegger (with Chester Yorton and Sergio Oliva) in a bodybuilding contest and one of the very few Mr. Olympia winners under 200 pounds. Overall, he competed for over 20 years (retiring after the 1983 Mr. Olympia) and won Mr. America, Mr. Universe, and Mr. Olympia during his career. In 1985, Frank and his wife Christine owned and operated "Zane Haven" in Palm Springs, California where they conducted one-on-one sessions with clients who wished to possess a symmetrical physique. Today, the Zanes live in San Diego, California, and his learning center is now called "Zane Experience". In 1994, Zane was inducted into the Joe Weider Hall of Fame. Since 1998, Zane has written a newsletter entitled Frank Zane Newsletter, that provides the latest information in all aspects of bodybuilding. He received the Arnold Schwarzenegger Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2003 Arnold Classic for his dedication and longtime support of the sport.
In 2005, Zane played the IFBB Announcer and worked as the consulting producer in the movie "See Arnold Run". As of 2006, Zane currently runs his own website, and appears at seminars and book signings. In 2011 Frank Zane appeared in the documentary Challenging Impossibility describing the weightlifting odyssey of spiritual teacher and peace advocate Sri Chinmoy. The film was an official selection of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.

The old style bodybuilders looked far better then the ones today. There is no comparison.
Today a lot look 6 months pregnant.
Feel like the mass monster stiff aesthetically peaked at Ronnie Coleman classic physique is much better
@@Mosfet510 I'm old, lifted when I could - my ideals were Zane and Larry Scott, being only 6.6 could not aspire to be a Draper. The black guys are different, sorry, but I used to live in a communal house, and there were a couple of black dudes, who never trained in a gym and they could have competed for jr mr America. I ALWAYS though Frank Zane was the epitome of bodybuilding. He was never a huge guy, but took what he had to it's maximum potential. Long live Zane!
wdym he was huge.

For those of you making comments on how bad he looks at 75 guess what? You are probably under 30 and look worse than him. He is a bodybuilding legend. He is alive at 75 that is what counts. With current science we can only play with the cards we are dealt.
TrustNone35 ......Amen, truer words were never spoken!!!
Perfectly said!!!!!
That's correct... this is almost a 100 years ago an I just turned 60 … feels like yesterday...
Yes, 4/10 Americans are obese, not overweight, but obese! Add in the overweight and it's 2/3. This man is still trim, mobile, strong enough for everyday and healthy at 75, having once possessed one of the best physiques a human has ever attained. So many by their 70s, if they're prudent and lucky enough to get there are absolute wrecks and have all kinds of aids, devices and help just to get around and do basic stuff.
Props to Frank for recognising what was important at that stage of his life, changing tack for longevity and health instead of outright aesthetic appeal.
TrustNone35 ---- People under 30 look worse than him at 75 ? That's a dumb statement .
Frank Zane is a Legend ... people ...please take note of all the golden era bodybuilders and NO BUBBLE GUT ... all with classic physique
CUS BACK THEN THEY DIDN'T MESS WITH HGH AND INSULIN, NOW THAT'S A STABLE RIGHT NEXT TO STEROIDS
But Phil Heath has awesome abs

Frank Zane has always always had my respect, one of my favorite body builders of all time. Just incredible, it's so hard getting older. I'm now 50, and I remember seeing that magazine cover back in the eighty's I was a teenager. Frank Zane one of the most incredible body builders this planet will ever know in any century.
Totally agree, mate. I did the same and I was mesmerized by such elegant shape.
sick probably
frank mathis Hold on for the ride Frank... I just turned 60 and I can not do what I used to do. It takes some getting used to my friend.
Exact same here buddy
I’m 67 and still trying to lift regularly. Boy it’s hard to do and really hard to watch myself shrink. But I loved Frank, Arnold, Franco, Draper, Robbie and that crew back in the day. Classics! I also went to Walter Jakot MD back in Santa Monica for my anabolics. Tried to be safe even back then.
One of the best ever! He wasn't a mass monster but Zane didn't need to be! His aesthetic physique and the way he posed is what made Frank Zane great!
One thing is for certain, Frank Zane had the best poses in the history of all competition. The master of posing versatility and art.
Frank Zane is a class act all around. He not only took care of his body but is well read and balanced. A body builder in the true sense. A life well lived and living.
best aesthetic body
still like Arnold more, tho. Imagine 1974 Arnold with a belly-zone like Zane?
You’ve obviously not met me.
Oggy, hey Chul, wassup
Your music selection SUCKS...
Disrespect to Legends!!!
That's Haney but Zane's body works as a great, smaller balance for sure!
Inspirational! If you read his books you see a person who is constantly learning and developing himself. It's what you don't see, his spirit that makes him so awesome!
No matter how perfect you are with training and nutrition and “supplements” you can never escape Father Time
mike strauss Hahaha you explained everything. Thanks
Life is depressing
Father time waits for no one
I don t think that at 70's your first priority is how you look
tbh with hormone replacement he could still be pretty jacked at 70-80-90+
Zane was inzane as a BB. He had the aesthetic build and his posing was just perfect. He knew how to present his physique to its greatest advantage. I really miss these Golden Age of BB guys. Todays mass monsters just don't compare IMHO
Today, Zane would probably be dominating the Men's Physique or Classic Physique class.
GrnXnham Not enough muscle mass
you mean not enough *cough* *steroids* *cough*
Yeah most likely.
@father of all of you what the hell are you talking about he had an amazing body and amazing legs we're talking about the physique competition here not overly jacked bodybuilders of today dumb dumb
@father of all of you like u have bigger than him dumb fk only steroid minded would say that cos they dont have brain only bubble gutts
The best aesthetics and symmetry in history of bodybuilding. He proves that you do not need to look enormous to be a bodybuilder
that picture in 02:09 is legendary.

Looks like bronze statue
When bodybuilders actually looked great!
*The beauty of Frank Zane is that he is so relatable to Joe Public. His physique is attainable and he looks just fantastic. He wasn`t a mass monster, but he had a body that everyone would love to have! That`s why he is rated so high over all these years. Frank Zane, Steve Reeves & Arnold. Top three of all time!!!*
IntotheFire You actually just made a great point: his physique is attainable! That’s why this guy is so special
Dan Letts Absolutely!!!
Attainable with gear, yes. Natty, absolutely not. His physique was fucking killer but let's not kid ourselves.
You dont really know how big he was. Even if you were a genetic freak this physique wouldnt be attanaible
You aren't obtaining this naturally, very possible on a small cycle though.
Frank & his wife Christina are such a class act. I met them once in 1982 at a seminar they had at a Santa Monica sporting good store. They were there promoting Zane Haven and just answering general, bodybuilding questions. They seemed like very nice people.
You had Frank at 28 yrs posing at the 83 Olympia, and then 38 at the 80 Olympia, and then 40 at the 81 Olympia, and then back to the 83 Olympia at 41 years old. There were other discrepancies in the timeline... other than that, fantastic video, extremely motivational. Thank You💪🏋🏼♂️
Myles Millner hahaha!!!!
I agree, noticed the Olympia discrepancies He was a science & math teacher in both Florida and California
Pic don't add up with the age. This is why I never believe in social media or what people post on RUclips. Anyone can post anything and say anything. Other than that Frank Zane is a legend .
Exactly, I Knew I wasn’t the only one who spotted it.
Zane could travel through time, where were you?
4:22 that’s the most iconic picture ever ! If I could choose any physic from any bodybuilder, frank Zane would be the one I would copy
Best stomach in the history of bodybuilding
Shadab you kidding right?
The mens phisique ibb pros have best stomach who frank zane
well developed obliques that give the 3d look without jeopardizing the taper
Put down the meth pipe.
jax rincon frank zane that’s fucking who! Until those ibb physique can nail that vacuum pose! Then nah!
Truly amazing that Frank achieved the look he did when his frame was really quite small - if you've met him in person, you know - Frank's skeleton would be more at home in a Tour de France peloton than on any modern IFBB stage - and yet he had the knowledge and drive to build one of the truly classic all time physiques. People will know who Frank Zane was and be impressed as long as there is a sport called bodybuilding.
frank's frame is not small dude has wide shoulder to waist ratio.
I would say Frank Zane was not only the godfather of aesthetics but also 100% the godfather of the vacuum pose!
The vacuum pose, not for every one...
Franco seems huge here: 02:35 ! What a legend! Look at his fist size, the double of Zane who looks totally invisible here among the both giants. How I love these old-school guys, never have enough of these pictures from the good old days!
Held it together through his 60's
Frank Zane was a legendary bodybuilder in his heyday with 7 titles including 3 Mr. Olympias. At 82 years old you can't expect him to look the same. When you age,you naturally shrink & shrivel up. I seen Arnold about ten years ago & he no longer has the real big guns & he also had kind of a jelly belly & a slight inner tube & he was only in his 60's.
Frank was never a big man but he sure stood up against the rest of them. An absolute legend and looks healthy at 75.
Always liked this guy. He always seemed so humble and low-key. A real champion.
the GAYEST music you could have possibly chosen. Zane rules but damn c'mon.
Adolescent. Not worthy.
,,,, LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horny chick music.
Should've used honorable music and not this shit
,,, yep !
Yaaaaay, Frank! Thanks for all your wonderful years of sharing.♥
My hero for oh, so many years. A truly class act!
same here
One of my heroes growing up! My goals and views of fitness have changed radically since then and it's bittersweet to see this titan getting older. But man, he' looks happy, vibrant and he is carrying his years very well. Long health, Frank Zane!
1:14 not 28, Frank was41 years old. Is un Munich MO 83. The absolutly Classic Phisic!! Zane Leyend!! Gretting from Spain!!!!
I guess it is pretty amazing, he won from 1977 to 1979. The person who won before him in 1976 was the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1980, he was beaten again by the unretired Arnold. He was not as massive as any of the others at the time, but his definition was unheard of and he won on that basis. It was a different time and era than today where everyone is massive but he made the most of it winning those three straight.
The one body part that Frank was not really known for was his legs, which gave him that look of symmetry and evenness, a true legend.
Frank Zane looks absolutely amazzzzzzzzing. I'm a NON-professional retired body builder - 9 years younger than Frank. Well done Frank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bodybuilding RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tremendous symmetry and separation, he had one of the best physiques of his time, and what a great time it was.
Back in the old school of bodybuilding, Mr Frank Zane was what body building was all about. PERFECTION!!!!! Thank you for what everyman aspires to look like. "3" Mr Olympia's
Frank Zane was one of my favorites when I was a teenager in the 80's and that pic of him next to Mike Mentzer was unbelievable! Legs were shredded and proportioned!
Frank Zane was and still is a motivating factor along with all the other greats of the golden era of bodybuilding.
Best bodybuilder of history, i'n my opinion, better than Arnold, Coleman, Levron, Yates, Kyle Green, Phil Heath or another one... Just the best. A real physique, the perfect form about human muscles.
Alejandro Gómez F . Il agree with you !
Alejandro Gómez F he’s not my favorite, but I can see why he’s yours. He’s asthetic and I’m pretty sure any guy would want his physique.
They used to call it "physical culture." Refining the body like a cultured mind, with experience and education and intellect. Frank Zane's body was a reflection of Frank Zane's mind, and what he chose to become. Very inspiring.
His body form with armony, he didn't need 140kg of muscle for win an Olympia, beacuse he had (in my opinion) the most important point on bodybuilding, and that point is the armony, the perfect combination of quantity and quality of muscular mass. When i see mass monsters like Big Ramy, Markus Rhul, Paul Dillett or Coleman i don't see the perfect armony like Zane. This is the reason, why is one of my favourite bodybuilders.
Alejandro Gómez F i completely agree
I have always admired Frank Zanes symmetry and how he looked so good long after his prime. He was obviously methodical with everything he was doing.
His conditioning for that era, hell even THIS era, is out of this world.
I spent many happy hours at the gym but never did competition bodybuilding. I remember him when I was a little kid and he was an inspiration. Reviewing a lot of these videos recently, he may not have been the biggest but in my opinion he had some of the best symmetry i have ever seen in the sport past and present! I'm betting he was steroid free. Maybe growth hormones but not the hard stuff. Much respect sir!
The best bodybuilder ever period
He was incredibly symmetrical and had one of the best frames I've ever seen
He didn't relay on steroids and looks normal even today, which the same cannot be said for many bodybuilders
He competed against people that were so much bigger than him and still won
Besides this he was also a very good person, he helped Arnold Schwarzenegger a lot with his posing and Tom platz with marketing himself
My favourite bodybuilder by far
Ja genau
This was a real physique. Not these bloated cartoon characters that we have today.
You mean like the bodybuilder we see now day with those nasty bloated gut that look like they're wearing a turtle shell? IMAO..........
Strong, aesthetic amd functional.
Yea I don’t get the physiques today with a bloated stomach! I guess it’s not natural like back in the golden years .... I wonder with all these supplements did they take any back then...
Nonsence. Todays guys is doing the same, taught by the legends.
@@andresmal2909 Todays guys abuse the HGH and insulin a lot more as well as the roids. They are all much bigger than they were back in the 70s. Began largely with Dorian Yates.
Definitely the golden era of Bodybuilding. Zane was amazing!!!
One of the best bodybuilders ever. His posing was amazing! It sucks getting old.
This guy-frank Zane was always my fave bodybuilder.
In my teen years started working out cause of his look.
Giving him the nickname
" the spider man look"
Frank Zane. You rock bud!
2:12 marvelous...its like a Greek God
alfpolo29 he literally looks like a statue!! I wish he were doing a vacuum though. It would’ve looked better(in my opinion).
Back again when bodybuilding was really a healthy sport.
Damn he was ripped into his late 60s!! And healthy and great shape into his 70s. what a badass
Great man and a legend. He answers emails. And, I buy training vids from his site, not just for myself but to give as gifts for "those in need" of them.
He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone...Legends live on...
Frank Zane was really a beautiful bodybuilder, maybe the most beautiful,I think.
Not so big as ,but more beautiful than ,the bodybuilders today, I think from the bottom of my heart.
Long live Zane! From Japan.
I've been a fan of and following Frank's career since the 70s. Talk about symmetry! The guy's a legend. But, sorry to see him looking sort of frail. My suggestion to Frank is to start adding much more protein to his diet so as to prevent sarcopenia, which is so prevalent among the elderly. The elderly need even more protein than younger people since they can't digest and assimilate it as easily as they used to. Get your protein levels up to over 200 gms/day Frank and keeping hitting that iron!
I'm a big fan of Frank Zane, besides being one of the most aesthetic Olympias, he was once a teacher
3 things clear from this video:
1- Frank Zane defined the meaning of aesthethics.
2- Bodybuilding in 80's and specially 70's was so much better than nowadays.
3- Schwarzenegger is the best bodybuilder of all times-
Nah buddy
I would always tell people his body is a masterpiece. Just beautiful, and surving at 75.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
He looked awesome at 65. Incredible
He reminds me so much of Stallone for some reason. That physique I thought was incredible as a kid in the 80s. But the far more improved version of Stallone. He looked so good in his late 30s. Amazing

I met Frank Zane several times at the arnold and got audographed pics of him,he is super nice and down to earth and looks incredible for his age
Damn 65 to 75 was brutal. Wheels fall of the bus fast in those 10 years
only if you stay off the T
You are quite right Anthony. I just turned 79 and have lifted weights since I was 15 with a few interuptions when the children came along. I wasn't too bad until 70 and then I noticed the strength and muscle started to decline. Having said that I still feel pretty good. The harsh reality is the body changes over time and rate increases when you hit 70. Cheers and keep training!
Good luck with the training Harry, keep it going man. Lift forever......live forever young.....
Thank you Lucky! There is a fellow in his late 50's who does about 1500 reps of different exercises every day with light weights. There is a 72 year old lady who works out 5 days a week for 2 hours each day. I know not everyone can do this because of some existing health problem but many who can just don't try. Again, thanks for the message and you too stay healthy. Cheers.

Two sports that saw their peek in the 70's is bodybuilding and boxing. Aside from a few standout stars, neither have been the same since.
I would have to add music to that as well.

It's great to be a man; you can be close to 50 and still look like a God.
Shut up heathen
Hot young women are the biggest celebs on the planet.
Yes, if you take roids you can look pretty damn good even after 60. The question is if your body can survive it.
And in this case you should write "god" instead of "God", since you mean one of those greek "gods" and not the Lord.
