Dave Cobb is such a fantastic producer. He's so laid back, affirming and encouraging to the artists but at the same time is offering great advice, musically, and steering the whole session in the right direction. I'd want that man in the room when I'm in the studio.
As someone who has zero musical experience besides listening to music non stop, I could watch something like this all the time. Would love to see more of this in the future, heck even just cell phone footage of the creative process. I'm sure there's a ton of people like me who enjoy this little glimpse into how the music we love comes to life.
Jimbo, I see your dad Everytime I see you, keep up the good work, he was so proud of you, as we all are that are from "the Shoals" .Proud of the greenhill native also..... Something about T.M.Rogers High School.
Damn, to be a fly in the wall. When there is that much talent in a room it looks so easy. I love how it starts and as they go, you hear it build to what you hear completed. They are amazing
This song is frickin' mesmerizing!!!!! Jason, who are you? I've heard this song on Krsh radio in Sonoma California - and this song just rips my soul out. And I have no idea why. You've made a pretty girl cry here!!!
Anybody know if Jason's electric (the Gretsch) is plugged in around 3:53, or is he just strumming an unplugged electric to give some more realism to the vocal performance?
PS: And seriously, the only way to hear this is here or the lyrics video? And the lyrics, fyi…….I don't even know what they mean - but they sound like truth. So beautiful!!!
Hari Watson Its about building your whole life and then one day (24 frames/hours) it comes crashing down. 'God was an architect' helping build your life up, '..but pipe-bomb...' but he can just blow it up too. Or something like that. At least thats what I hear when listen to this great song.
Oh wow. Has he talked about it? I actually saw him live in Oakland CA a couple of weeks ago, so I got his albums before I went. And every song except one blows me away more than the next. Cover Me Up rips my heart out it's so beautiful. You know when something is so beautiful it makes you cry? It's that. His entire 2013 and 2015 albums do that to me. And his concert was phenomenal! I've never seen so many people just transfixed and rapt (is that a word? Enraptured) with a musician. When he sang about getting sober for good, the theater was literally shaking bc people were stamping their feet bc they were so happy for him. Sometimes when I think everything is hopeless and people suck I remember that moment - bc it was just pure good will and love. Haha. Sorry, rambling… But wouldn't you just love to have tea with him and Amanda? They're both amazing - and they're amazing. Damn! Maybe I should become Jason Isbell's Social Media person!!! ;)
+Nicole Bishara 24 frames actually refers to the number of frames per second that a standard movie runs at in a theater. So you're kind of correct in that you spend all of this time building your life, but it can come crashing down in a mere second.
+Grant Barry It also used to be how many pictures you got in a 35mm roll of film. Before the digital age, you had to pick and choose what you took a picture of if you were being artistic. Once you took it, you couldn't go back or delete it. You took what you took, and that was a decision you had to live with. You didn't get the do-over. Same goes for life, really.
Andronicus Comnenus, it is about having faith that your life will keep building up, but then your world gets turned upside down and you can do nothing but watch it all happen, like a movie, at 24 frames per second. Verse after first chorus explains a ton.

He has to be good. Imagine being an artist and let someone outside you heart work with your creation.

there are so many good Isbell songs, but I think this is my favorite...
So fascinating to see how such an amazing song gets arranged in the studio. Thanks for posting.

Hari Watson Listen to Marc Maron's WTF podcast (episode 482). I've been a fan ever since I listened to that.
The song that introduced me to my favorite artist.
love this song
4:30 the bass gives me chills it's so good
Really interesting that the part came from Dave Cobb!
Jimbo’s bass part is a masterpiece.
1:37 - “Yeah”. “Wow”. “Pretty Cool”.
What my inside voice says immediately after the first listen of most of Jason’s work.
Beautiful song, beautiful recording. Can't stop listening to it!
This song gets me everytime emotionally. Wish there was a karaoke version.
Sadler Vaden is a Badass too!!
This is the most unbelievable glimpse into the creative process. You're watching it develop in real time.
Truly beautiful song
I have a hard time believing this was the first time everybody heard the song ... they would be looking at each other and smiling really wide ...
Fascinating how they layer the song
Brilliant from the outset too so that helps
Egoless collaboration
Pretty cool to see how Dave Cobb pieced the instrumentals of this song together.

fantastic sound
I'm curious if God being an architect is a reference to freemasonry?
I love the song but I wish I could understand the God references. Anybody?

He is saying you thought god had a great design, but that things blow up or change at any moment.
