There are those, seeking to criticize, who like to say Buddy wasn't "musical" - as if being blessed by being so technically brilliant and so incredibly fast would have to preclude musicality. This solo, another masterwork, again demonstrates how musical he was, his skills seemingly limitless.
I was about 10 when I saw Buddy drumming like crazy and i've asked myself my whole life...who that invredible drummer was...now I know...why I was so impressed...even that I didn't knew anything of drumming...R I P Buddy Rich...Greatest drummer of all Time...
Well, Carl Palmer and Billy billy Cobham was worthy. I know that buddy used to claim that young Palmer was from another planet. What separates buddy from the lot is not just because of his elevation as a drummer but also the fact that he was a pioneer that layed many of the foundations which all drummers after him follows to this day. He is by far the most innovative drummer that ever lived and is still also one of the most technically accomplished.
I've seen Buddy two times and I've seen Carl Palmer four times. Carl "modeled himself after Buddy." Buddy was the "KING!" At some point I read Buddy referred Carl as a "bitch." Since Buddy is gone...in my opinion...Carl is the best. Buddy...invented "drum solos"...love him.
He was on fire this night! Everything SO relaxed and clean and....gosh what can I add that hasn't been said a million times. A genius freak who will never be matched.
Enjoy it! You will never see another drummer like this in your lifetime. There really is not a close second. Krupa, Bellson, Morello and a very few others were all great drummers.....but they were nothing like Buddy Rich. The Greatest!!!
buddy rarely ever made a mistake the 1960s buddy speed and power was frigging scary. he really never lost it tho. this solo is nothing short of incredible
Old story.....this drummer comes offstage soaked in sweat after a 20minute solo. The stagehand says "Who does he think he is, God Almighty?" The Stage Manager says "No son, he IS God Almighty, he just thinks he's Buddy Rich!" 🙏
Never thought he was that great of a drummer till I seen him play at a concert....he convinced me that night that he was unbelievably a great drummer !!! Still gets chills thinking about his performance that night
He seems more inspired in this video like maybe he's having more fun with this one. Or maybe he's trying to crank it up another notch, either way simply unfathomable!
Yes you are right.... Look up a dvd called "Buddy Rich Up Close" and you will be blown away..... It's on A DRUMCHANNEL.COM DVD . It is , in my opinion, the best visual and sound recording of Buddy...ever.
seen tons of his solos but this one was really a notch up. I saw him the same year at Trenton State College. He was really on his game even to that late point. I saw him again in '84 and he had slipped a bit...and still better than anyone else on the planet.
Just listen to the construction of the solo. It's like a concierto with one phrase answering another. (I won't even start on Buddy's inhuman technique.) Most drummers practise phrases (hand-hand-foot-foot, for example) and then they bring that out onto the stage and make a career out of it. Buddy is always unmistakably Buddy, but every solo is different. Very different! Buddy was a true artist, creating as he played, not regurgitating last night's exercises. It should be illegal to mention any other drummer on the same page as Buddy. Someone said he was a badass. Good for him! If I could play like that, you could go to hell!
Yes Paul, Buddy was a "one off" and who are we, to form an opinion on someone we have never met, but contrary to you mentioning other drummers on the same page , I think Buddy would applaud the fact that you are holding that stick correctly in Tetuan....
You've been spying on me! The traditional grip is out of fashion now but I started that way and I play better that way, so I don't really want to change now.
This has to be one of my favourite drum solos of his. There does tend to be a little bit of a theme and a little bit of repetition in a lot of Buddy Rich's drum solos, but there was something about this one that was definitely structured differently. Just awesome. I love the way he mellows it out with the stick tricks towards the end and then suddenly fires it up again, I love the way he builds it there.
I saw Buddy with his orchestra at Bristol UK every year from 1966 to 1973 , unforgettable , his solos are still ringing in my ears especially his West Side Story drum solo in 1966 in front of most of Britain's top drummers, the solo was 16 minutes long and unfortunately was not recorded. I still have all the concert programmes.
Always gave 110% and expected it of the musicians he surrounded himself with. So fortunate to have seen him several times live. Last time I saw him was at University of North Texas a few years before his passing. He had just come off heart surgery and could still play circles around guys half his age. He was playing with college musicians, too, and giving everybody hell. Loved Buddy Rich as much as Philly Joe Jones. RIP BR! Thanks for posting this.
That is just f'n UNCANNY!!!!! Full on charging bull explosive Barbarism meets crisp, clean, articulate, fine, fine jazz technique, vaudeville percussive Panache and superbly refined MUSICALITY!!! R.I.P. Buddy! I've only been a fan for a couple decades? But REALLY been listening much more intensely the last 8 years. I'm 43. Im of course a drummer too? I don't know what happened but it seems that after 35? How I hear things changed. With everything I like to jam on! I feel like I 'Get It' now more than prior.

Benny Green the jazz critic said Buddy Rich was the greatest technician in jazz , probably in all music ....possibly of all time . That is one hell of a statement from a legend himself . "When you watched Buddy play, you never took your eyes off him..." You've got that right. I saw him live about 15 or so times and always tried to position myself to the left or far right, so I could watch that magical left hand in action.
+erzug I heard he played a club in Harlem, when he was just starting out, where he kicked off the band with a semi drum solo, which caught the attention of the musically critical audience and when the stage curtain opened they saw he had his right arm in a plaster cast and sling ! I do hope that story is true...
I read a book by Bujddy's buddy, Mel Torme called "Traps, Drum Wonder". It is back in print, as I recall. Very good source of every BR. I believe I heard and read that he did play a gig with a broken arm, but not sure of the details.
Ah, the Ludwig years. I suspect he could have played CB700 and still sounded amazing. There was a local music store that had the Ludwig Buddy Rich kit, complete with the wrapped throne. Man, I lusted after that kit. Though when it came time to buy my first new kit, I couldn't help myself and went with Slingerland, because most of the photos of him, Louie Bellson, and Gene Krupa had Slingeland. Still have that kit!
One of Buddy's best solos captured for sure. The barrage of doubles at the 2:00 mark is fantastic. I saw BR live at least 30 times between 1972 and 1986 and it seems like yesterday sitting there in awe with my jaw dropped. Wish I could take my son to see him now. Greatest drummer of all time without question.
he was simply Astounding just unreal. a rarity. a Bruce Lee. a master
Ludwigs never sounded better.
If God ever creates a better drummer, I hope I am still alive to see it.
They aren't around today.
Roy Beckerman im a huge Ludwig fan! Buddy rules!

Yes it is.
For the ignorant like me, what is pollard syndrum?
mobrules29
Electronic drum the 1970's.
Thanks!
Took me awhile to notice that! That's interesting how Buddy has that addition on his kit!
Best drummer that has ever lived. It's not even debatable. RIP Buddy
without any discussion...greatest drummer ever lived..an example for all drummers in the World..
Well, Carl Palmer and Billy billy Cobham was worthy. I know that buddy used to claim that young Palmer was from another planet. Buddy was also the greatest jerk of drum history! ;)
Yes...you are correct...Buddy was the best to "walk on this planet." He was "the percussionist to study and follow." He was THE...pioneer.
What's the most amazing part is Buddy is 63 years old doing that solo!!
He was on fire this night! Everything SO relaxed and clean and....gosh what can I add that hasn't been said a million times. A genius freak who will never be matched.
The man never disappointed. World's greatest drummer, without a doubt.
Many good drummers but just one Buddy Rich!
This guy the goat or what.. I had the privilege of seeing him play about 18 times... Yikes
Saw him and met him about 5 times in the UK I have seen many of the greats from Krupa to present day buddy tops them all Sleep well traps
Buddy’s last LUDWIG years. …1978-82.
The drums sound amazing,.
Agreed!!
Enjoy it! You will never see another drummer like this in your lifetime. There really is not a close second. Krupa, Bellson, Morello and a very few others were all great drummers.....but they were nothing like Buddy Rich. The Greatest!!!
Although no two BR solos were ever the same, this particular solo seems to be structured quite differently than most. Unbelievable.
thats what i was thinkin'....................wb
I didn't know it was "West Side Story" until he kicked off the ending.
this to me is one of his best solos I've heard. The phrasing is so good. His bass drum foot is so clean and quick. Love it
+331paradiddle Glad I could upload it, he was out of this world...
I play my drums just like this in the shower!
RIP!
GOD HAS ALL OF THE BEST DRUMMERS!!!
Great solo from Buddy. He could do just about anything on a five
piece kit.
Saw him twice at Disney! The absolute best!!....ever!! Thanks Buddy!!
Buddy Rich was not Human, God was playing, seen him many times UNBELIEVABLE
buddy rarely ever made a mistake
the 1960s buddy speed and power was frigging scary.
he really never lost it tho. this solo is nothing short of incredible
God put Buddy Rich on the earth to play drums.
Terrifying ! this is a" throw YOUR sticks away" performance a "drummer from another planet" exhibition of power, speed and genius sticking, thanks
THE greatest drummer to ever walk planet earth...Bernard "Buddy" Rich.👍
BUDDY WAS AND STILL THE GRATEST DRUMER EVER.
He had touch. Forget everything your ever saw or heard him do. He had a certain control over his playing that is unreachable.
'Who the hell' would click 'thumbs down', some FREAK?
Old story.....this drummer comes offstage soaked in sweat after a 20minute solo. The stagehand says "Who does he think he is, God Almighty?" The Stage Manager says "No son, he IS God Almighty, he just thinks he's Buddy Rich!" 🙏
One of his best ever solos.
Unusual drum sound, unless it was the recording.
Buddy just proved again, he was/is the greatest ever.
Agree completely to every one of your points. The bass drum seemed unusually pronounced in this solo, which I love - you can hear every strike.
Man he was feeling it during this solo. I've seen plenty of BR solos but this one is different. It has a lot of passion and energy.
There's only one. God only makes just one. Phenomenal!
I think, this comes pretty darn close! ruclips.net/video/DeAY0ZlJLJk/видео.html

The part from 2:08-2:25 is absolutely INSANE! GODDAMN Buddy is good!
Wide open. No drums muffled. Love it.
It is just not fair that all that supreme ability should depart this world to wherever. If there is such a thing as reincarnation...bring him back.
for real! Buddy Rich is the best

That's sufficient motivation for me to "stick" with it. I'd be afraid to change!
the greatest.....ever! awesome that you can actually hear the kick drum!
I can't believe what I am seeing. Best I ever heard.
even the speed of light must be jealous of buddy..
Got headphones on and i did not realize that buddy was so heavy on the bass drum😳👍
Gary Rosema ya headphones help. He did a lot on the kick, it just wasn’t always recorded well. His hand speed is unbelievable.
His Bass drum sounds like carpet bombs. A good recording.

ludicrous speed.

HIS DRUMS SOUND GREAT!!!!!!!! ALL DIPLOMAT HEADS!!!!! EVEN SNARE BOTTOM
He might've had the stock Ludwig heads on that kit, as the tom head shows a Ludwig logo.
When Buddy holds the hi hat on some hits is that considered a cymbal "choke?"
Also, why does Buddy hit the hi hat sometimes from the bottom?
Because he can!...
Yes, that could be considered a choke of a cymbal. Buddy would also choke his crashes etc. for a nice choke effect. I can't speak for Buddy but what I noticed about your second question is, he was able cup the hats with the left hand, which allow ed for various, ringing &/ or choking in that position along with the foot. The stick was also right there, so he could use it to do additional patterns from underneath. If you notice in this video, he would still often play more strokes on the right hand while doing this filling in with less on the left hand, in that underneath position. It also made for a showy contribution to his playing.
why not?
Buddy said he "never practiced" the neighbours would be glad of that! but seriously he performed every night and had the thought and ability to play whatever came into his head in his solos I would have loved to have met him and asked how he played solos night after night and how he mentally prepared or was it spontaneous
@MorbidManMusic I think Buddy was relating to his daily routine on tour not how he archived his ability, in the past he studied under some of the best
@MorbidManMusic No he didn't practice in the sense of spending time at home and practicing on his own to improve. His practice was his rehearsals with the band, and sharing tips with others and vice versa. He was a prodigy as well as one of those who could learn a piece after one hearing. Just look at the Carson clips or other shows from the times. They would often get him some cheap kit he never even touched. Or he would play some one else's kit without a rehearsal. His natural talents limited him in certain ways as things came far too easy. He stuck with what he liked and became very set in his ways.
