He may have played mostly big band jazz, but it's obvious this guy could've picked up any form of music old or modern and completely dominate every other drummer trying to make a name for themselves.
Agreed! There is just such a spark and excitement to everything he plays! Every time he hits the snare in a different place it's intentional! It's hard to put into words how great he could articulate and speak through the drums. Truly the Goat
Hands down the absolute best ever! I grew up watching Buddy's performances on "The Tonight Show," and I also got to see him live. What an amazing performer. Very few people had that hand speed and accuracy of this guy. Neil Peart, Carl Palmer , and Ian Paice from Deep Purple come close, but jazz is completely different thing to play, and Buddy was the best. I've also watched him with "drum offs" with Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Louie Bellson, and others, but Buddy was so fast and so clean that no one could touch him.
Incredible to see the orchestra members' faces as they intently fix their eyes on Buddy, meticulously waiting for the exact moment to resume playing after his drum solo. They almost seem frightened.
I'm 64 soooo Yea. Buddy was the best, and is still up there with the greatest of all time. It was a pleasure to hear Zildjians again. It's been a minute.
No the orchestra is mesmerized just like everybody else who watches Buddy Rich play the drums it's not a big fancy drum set give this man a pair of drumsticks and he could probably play on anything and make it sound awesome the man is so quick and aware of where every piece of kit is❤ he is the grandfather of G.O.A.T s
I saw Buddy 4 times in my youth with my father. He loved jazz and instilled in me the love of jazz. Buddy was the best. I always stayed up to watch him on the Tonight Show.
I was live there, after the Solo the audience stood up,never ending applause,it was November !984 Berlin Jazzfestival,a Concert which i will never forget.
I was lucky enough to have seen this band many times in SoCal. Once with my Dad, in the front row of a small club. That bass drum would knock you over!!
Each time I got to see him perform live it was like magic. He was incredible. And his bands were amazing. The first time I saw him perform live was at a local high school when I was in my teens. He asked if there were any drummers in the audience. Of course many raised their hands. He chose a small boy to come up onto the stage to play his drums for a few minutes. A dream of a lifetime. It was such a nice thing for him to do. Incredible memories of seeing him perform live, plus all those performances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. His skills were truly out of this world. Traps, the drum wonder!
5:16 "It was just too easy for him!" Excellent observation, and something that seemed to separate Buddy from all others. If he could think it, he could play it. He had no limitations.
Speechless is right. If you saw him live in his prime you'd know Buddys, the mountain that no drummer can get to the top of...didnt practice read music take lessons was playing at 18 months old vaudeville did it all photographic memory comedian tap dancer black belt karate movie star most gifted drummer of all time I worked with Don Menza ( father of Ni
I wish more people would really listen to his several big bands play. You get snippets with these solos, but, they too, were some of the greatest of all time.
What i noticed about Mr. Rich, and comparing to all the other great drummers, is all 4 limbs were EQUAL! There was no weak side to the other. Secondly, he tuned his drums, especially that snare drum very tight, so there is absolutely no cheating in the sound, especially when doing those buzz rolls. The clarity in his playing is just unmatched. He also had a photographic memory for music! He could not read or write music, so he would just have the band go over the charts, as he sat out front listening...In the 1960's and part of the 1970's he did have Philly Joe Jones learn all the new tunes. Then a few weeks later to a month. He'd have Philly Joe play all these new tunes, and then when they would go over 7, 8, 9, maybe 10 tunes, Buddy would then go up to the bandstand, and call off the tunes by number, and then have the tune down, with all the kicks, the breaks, the time signature, the ending, and all his fills he was to put in. Philly Joe said it was remarkable the ear Buddy had. Buddy also rarely practiced, and was Self taught. For me he was the most naturally talented drummer ever!!! 99.9% of drummers, practiced there ass offf to get great, But with Buddy it was God Given!!
Check out Woody (Herman) meets Buddy. Newport Jazz Festival 1966. No video but just listen to Buddy's licks. When Buddy sat in with another famous musician the gloves came off. Listen for Buddy's comment in the middle of his solo.
All musicians listen to some internal voice we try to bring it to light as clearer as possible. listening to that voice is the genius. That what goes down in history.
You could remove the audio and just show the face of that dude off to the right side .......that alone is something you'll never see even from one person out of a stadium crowd of audience members. To be there must have been miraculously mind blowing somehow beyond the videos we're witnessing as skilled drummers in total awe.
God worked things out for me to see him my one and only time. It was in Gresham, Oregon, while I was just up at Mt. Hood Community College playing tennis and the Festival of Jazz was there. Being somewhat poor at the time, I didn't have tickets, even though Buddy was going to be there with Mel Torme. So my tennis pal and I got done playing and were walking to our cars and we saw a Gresham policeman doing security at the gig, and he was a high school buddy of ours we hadn't see for 4-5 years, and we recognized "Neil" and we went over to talk to him. As we are just shooting the shit, a couple leaves the venue and walks beside us and then asked if we want their tickets, as they have to leave because of baby sitter issues. We walk in, tennis togs on, and carrying tennis bags. We find a usher and ask where the tickets are seated, and he takes us down to the third row from the stage, and Buddy came on 1/2 hour later. I can't even describe all that had to fall together by pure chance that allowed me to see him up close, and hear Mel Torme working with him. Unbelievable.
Colby, did you know that Buddy Rich picked up drum sticks at 2 years old?!?!?!?! He practiced ever since, which is why I name him the GREATEST drummer of ALL time.
Drumming is an art form, Buddy Rich was probably the best exhibition drummer of all time, but apart from that designation: it's more a matter of preference. And any further comparison is the proverbial apples vs oranges.😮😊😅
Absolutely he is the best ever. Years ago he had a faceoff with Gene Krupa, who many thought was so good, and Buddy made him look like an amateur. Krupa used to admire how fast Rich and Lewis Belson were.
You'd have to take a video of any other drummer and play it at about 3X speed to get close to what Buddy played in real time. He was on another plane entirely.
It’s too bad there was never a recorded drum solo of his in his younger day, I think the earliest was when he was 48 years old. That show with Jerry Lewis which he appeared on but never anything when he was in his 20’s or even 30’s which would be interesting, to say the least
There are earlier recorded solos around and a few are on RUclips- a couple when he was with Tommy Dorsey in the early 1940's and a recording of him doing a snare drum solo at age 12 which would have been recorded in 1929.
played drums for Don Menza Buddys ceasars palace album father of Nick Menza megadeath heard eye witness accounts Buddy was super human cant get it from practice el stepario is good I like him but not even close to Buddy Rich the GOAT
Any jazz musician can be the goat, is the style of "everything is allow to play even if you change the tempo, speed and make mistakes well, iiiiis jazz babyyyy so everything is allowed 😂
The very thought that anyone keeps imagining there’s “no one best drummer” in a world that’s already seen Buddy just blows my mind. Folks, drop the fake evenhandedness, and just deal with it. Drumming has an unequivocal boss, and this is him. It ain’t even close.
The greatest big band drummer of all time....The speed and the left hand are the most amazing thing about Buddy Rich... Definitely the GOAT!!!!
He may have played mostly big band jazz, but it's obvious this guy could've picked up any form of music old or modern and completely dominate every other drummer trying to make a name for themselves.
It’s not the speed alone but the accents, dynamics, ingenuity and stamina that might be unmatched, and is what makes us watch to the end.
Agreed! There is just such a spark and excitement to everything he plays! Every time he hits the snare in a different place it's intentional! It's hard to put into words how great he could articulate and speak through the drums. Truly the Goat

I love watching Buddy Rich,,,, grew up listening to him,,,, Greatest
🐐👌🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Note the Paiste ride cymbal he has here.
@@crlaw75 I don't see it.
@@TheUprightLuthier-1959 , at the :47 mark, you can see the Paiste logo under the ride cymbal.
Buddy Rich was a tough band leader!
The O.G! What a man. What a legend! His hi-hat trills always inspired me so much and no doubt everyone who came after him!
Buddy takes drummers\ listeners on a journey to a place where they are speechless, Just in ore of what they have just witnessed
I saw Buddy 4 times in my youth with my father. He loved jazz and instilled in me the love of jazz. Buddy was the best. I always stayed up to watch him on the Tonight Show.

ok i was going to say no such thing as the best but then there was Buddy, genius
All the videos in the world can't match watching Buddy Rich in person, which I was privileged to witness twice!
Totally agree. The power he generated was tremendous and It could never be captured on video
5:16 "It was just too easy for him!" Excellent observation, and something that seemed to separate Buddy from all others. If he could think it, he could play it. He had no limitations.
No one can top buddy. He will always be the G.O.A.T(The Greatest Of All Time)
Buddy WAS the GOAT. No question about it.
Saw Buddy live in London in 1980 and still to,this day unbeatable not just in speed but artistry
Without a doubt....the GOAT.
Speechless is right. He was just so unique. The finesse he had I think was, and is, unparalleled.
I wish more people would really listen to his several big bands play. You get snippets with these solos, but, they too, were some of the greatest of all time.
You witnessed history by the man who was touched by the hand of God himself and he worked for the right to be a little arrogant don't you think
Absolutely ! Buddy was and is still the greatest drummer of all time.
What i noticed about Mr. Rich, and comparing to all the other great drummers, is all 4 limbs were EQUAL! There was no weak side to the other. If it was arrogance, it was well deserved and well earned. He was phenomenal!
Check out Woody (Herman) meets Buddy. Newport Jazz Festival 1966. No video but just listen to Buddy's licks. When Buddy sat in with another famous musician the gloves came off. Listen for Buddy's comment in the middle of his solo.
The early years were just the beginning!👍👍
And under hot lights with a sweater on!!!! God given!
All musicians listen to some internal voice we try to bring it to light as clearer as possible.
listening to that voice is the genius. That what goes down in history.
Nobody dinamyc powerfull Endurance, super swing e super fast like him ,and musicality umbeliveble because no Reading music Genius the best of all time.
Your favorite drummers, favorite drummer is Buddy Rich
You could remove the audio and just show the face of that dude off to the right side .......that alone is something you'll never see even from one person out of a stadium crowd of audience members. To be there must have been miraculously mind blowing somehow beyond the videos we're witnessing as skilled drummers in total awe.
The Professor and Paicey both idolized the man. Check out Paicey's early 70's kit on the MiJ album cover. It's a mirror image of Buddy's early kits.

I love it, he’s still got it! ❤❤❤
🤘🏻👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻🤘🏻🐐
Beyond stupendous
I feel like something was different. I can´t explain.
Drumming is an art form, Buddy Rich was probably the best exhibition drummer of all time, but apart from that designation: it's more a matter of preference. And any further comparison is the proverbial apples vs oranges.😮😊😅
He supposedly in the middle of a solo stopped and stood up and said I think I hurt myself, and had a double hernia....
A GOAT….yes! Thee GOAT….no! I don’t think there is one GOAT but many that have reached GOAT like status.
He was the GOAT. Not any doubt about it.
This made me watch Whiplash straight after. If you haven't, watch it. Incredible film
He also played such an intense solo back in the day, he gave himself a Hernia...
definitely the best of all time
Absolutely he is the best ever. Years ago he had a faceoff with Gene Krupa, who many thought was so good, and Buddy made him look like an amateur. Krupa used to admire how fast Rich and Lewis Belson were.
Never seen anyone I don’t think with better hands
Did you know that him and Carl Palmer were very good friends.
He was definitely a monster or, more aptly, said the OG goat 🐐!!
🐐👌🏻🤘🏻👍🏻
It gets better with age!!!👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Maestro On Drums! With 2 Sticks
🤘🏻👍🏻🐐👌🏻
His snares are stupid good!
Yep
You'd have to take a video of any other drummer and play it at about 3X speed to get close to what Buddy played in real time. He was on another plane entirely.
Get hold of an album called. Rich versus Roach. Buddy rich and Max Roach. Brilliant stuff
🤘🏻👍🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Do you see the drum stick in Buddy's Left hand. The correct way!!!
No doubt, the GOAT
Yeah…. He’s the best! No denying it.
GOAT no doubt.
Of course
I think huub janssen was amazing and slept on tbh
yes yes yes no 1
Undisputed!
YEP
I don't think there is a greatest of all time. What we can say is that he was the greatest of his era and that he changed how the drums were played.
# 1: Buddy # 2: Bonham
GOAT?😂😂 Have you ever heard of Max Roach? I saw Rich live several times. Bored, all he did was loud drum roll with theatrics.
Absolutely gorgeous.. Master piece wawwww💖💖💖💖
👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🐐
Those people watching him play seem to not want to be there.
🤘🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏻👌🏻🐐
Rick was the best
Rich
he started at 2 yrs old
his face when he looks at you.....yeah rea em and weep.....kiddo

Are you leading or dragging????!!!
Max Roach🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Arrogance?
Buddy was a marine and a black belt who trained other marines going into combat.
Dude was always drunk and coked up.😢
He definitely is an amazing drummer, but hearing all the things said about how much of a dick he was makes it hard to fully appreciate him.
I'm content with having never met him. Kinda like Michael Jordan, his arrival would double as my cue to leave & that makes me sad to articulate.
All technique...no soul.
Any jazz musician can be the goat, is the style of "everything is allow to play even if you change the tempo, speed and make mistakes well, iiiiis jazz babyyyy so everything is allowed 😂

It ain’t even close.
You actually don't have to like anybody... Just respect their musical prowess
they say Joe Morello had the fastest left hand on drums on the great drum solo! maybe
