Just happened to be strolling around Disneyland and saw he was going to be performing sat down in the 3rd row... omg one handed roll🤪 then up close in Seattle about 8 months before he passed, I got his autograph!!!
I remember watching this as a 14 year old kid in the early days of cable - I had only been playing drums roughly a year. I remember being amazed and trying to figure what he was doing. Here I am - some 30 odd years later, still amazed...still trying to figure out what he did.
The Buddy Rich band would play at the Carnation Pavillion every summer for 3-4 nights. I would go every show since I only lived about 15 min from Disneyland. One night they had the Maynard Ferguson Big Band playing across the lagoon from the Pirates ride and there were two guys talking behind me. The tall guy said his brother Bob was playing bass. I turned around and the tall guy was Chad Wackerman.
i like how marching band/military style drumming came through in his drumming. That precision and speed and then combine that with swing style rhythm... just sounded like gun shots and canons going off in a jazz context. Sounded like fireworks finales. His drum tunings/the way his drums sounded were crucial to this as well but of course he could've made any drum set sound great.
Buddy does more playing on a 4 piece, than many of today’s drummers, using a 14 piece. I don’t count the second floor tom, which usually has a towel on it.
I honestly think he would be glad there was movie so big as Wiplash was about jazz drumming and he would be OK with idea of the movie that getting as great as you could is a good goal in life, since he was kinda similar in lot of ways. Maybe I’m wrong, but it’s a quess...
Back in the day, all schooled drummers were taught traditional grip. Hence the name. Unschooled garage band drummers used matched grip. When you saw a drummer playing trad. grip, you paid attention.
Buddy loved this Slingerland Radio King snare.1983-87. You wonder why he didn’t play one earlier, instead of upsetting Slingerland management , by using Fibes snares.
Yes, it was at the Carnation Plaza (Plaza Gardens) which has since been torn down. I was there the next night to see Buddy and everybody told me what I missed! He was just as great the night I was there. Phenomenal. Louie Bellson used to also play Disneyland back in the 70s and 80s. Wonderful memories.
That Gazebo was in the the center of town in the beginning. Walt moved it because it blocked the view of the castle. Fun fact. Best place to get a good view of Louie and Buddy.
Rich great technician. Krupa much more musical. Buddy was very insistent many other forms of music were not music. To which I point out drum solo's are not really jazz and so by his definition they are also not music just noise. A short solo of any instrument is fine. These extended solos do nothing but stroke the ego of the soloist THEY are not music.
The way he plays the drums is monotonous, and not artistic. Look at how bored the guys in his back. The countenance of the other players waiting. All the notes are filled up and hard to find rests..........
This guy worked that snare like nobody’s business! Every rudiment imaginable at blazing speeds, hands like freaking pistons! RIP The Master!
He had that snare sounding like a swarm of bees was coming! 😮😊😊
BEST DRUMMER TO EVER LIVE
Agree 110%
💯
The best with rudiments-style playing. There are s LOT of mind-blowing drummers out there; there IS NO "best".
Louie Bellson's solos were better than Buddy's hodge-podge slop😂@@catkeys6911

Yea, man...I have to smile because it's pointless....
The genius of Buddy Rich. No one else can compare period. He was just so musical.

The world's greatest drummer EVER!!!! End of story! Paul Budd.
And in 30 years you will still be amazed and trying to figure out what he did. He was one of a kind.

@@steveloguercio4594 Thanx for asking. Doing great. Not many gigs. Covid reset the mold.

Ran into him and his college age band at Disneyland main street back in those days. This looks like one of those performances. Always amazing!
We saw him there around that time. My ex and I may be in that crowd. It was incredible! That’s Disneyland.

Even at old age Buddy kicks ass!!!!
Buddy’s own Slingerland Radio Kings he played until his death in 1987.
He could have played any brand, seeing wasn’t endorsed anymore.
He had burned bridges with a lot of drums companies by then. Nobody would endorse him.
He's 67 years old here, ask yourself if you can play that fast at the age you are now? I can't.
2 shows a night 10 months a year. Easy
@@brianchisnell1548 post some videos
Sick...Puppy Hell, he must be 80years old and still blasting...Unfuckin' real.
Magic Buddy !
insane control,
He,s playing a restored radio king set of Slingerlands!
Absolutely. the Master
The gods of master blastbeat
Superhero 💪👏👍
What a legend he was. I wonder what he would have thought of Whiplash..
He'd have given it a dismissive chuckle...

"I'm up on the band stand swearing my balls off and you're up there breaking my fucking heart!"
Good God I got tired just watching him but he was amazing still is and he’s dead!!!
I see all drummers today playing matched grip. No person ever could play all this matched grip.🎶🎸🎼

he was such a cool cat
Holy crap!
When Buddy was born he came out with a pair of drumsticks
What this man could do with 2 pieces of wood!!!! A true musical genius!!
I believe he's playing Slingerland drums here.
Mid '40s Slingerland Radio Kings. Same as his Tommy Dorsey days. Fully restored.

Jeff Taylor from what I’ve been told and heard is that’s is locked up at the Smithsonian. It’s not on display, but in the storage
Cathy donated then found out she couldn't get them back out
