    Buddy was in great form here. He even looks younger than he did in previous appearances!

    Just a side-note personal story... I happened to be at National Airport in DC, and was sitting with my luggage and drums, waiting for my flight, when I saw Buddy arrive, meet up with someone, and walk through the terminal. Buddy was walking rather quickly, and was too far away for me to yell out, or chase him to say hello, but it was just interesting to bump into him like that. Of course, I didn't have any idea he was headed for the White House, and was wondering if I had somehow missed a concert announcement.

    64 years old and tearing it up, I think had Buddy lived past 69 he would have probably kept playing well into his 90s ~ RIP Buddy you’re still the best

    'The Bottom Line' was basically a Rock club in N.Y. . Just, shows how Buddy's Bands over the Years or at that time transitioned into every venue, played w/ all kinds of music, and Integrated His Music at an acceptable high level. NoBuddy did this w/ Big Band Music like Him...

      Many Jazz big names played "The Bottom Line". Basically, if you could draw the crowd you could play there. I saw Sonny Rollins a few times there, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter.

      Shaughnessy and Rich were real friends ( I think one of Buddy's few drummer friends ), the level of respect between was huge.

    Buddy was famous for sometime replacing his Rogers and Slingerland snares with Fibes, but not his Ludwig snares…probably Supersentitives.

      He's proven over the years that he can play any setup. He'd already played on that double tom set before on the show. Obviously, that was what he rehearsed with the band earlier.

    The year after this was filmed, Buddy suffered a heart attack, whilst playing a West Side Story drum solo, which you can watch on Buddy Rich - The impossible solo.He was in agony, but he played it to the end, & he went to hospital & he recovered.

    Johnny showing Buddy that photo was not something Buddy was going to appreciate. The time Buddy spent in Vaudeville was not easy and he had some very painful experiences to earn a few dollars each week. Once it was gone, he never looked back.

    I am trying to find a specific clip of Buddy Rich performing on the Tonight Show. That night I believe he used Ed Shaunesy's drum set and when he sat down Johnny prompted him to do a warm up. When Buddy hit the high hat, it shattered. The prop department made a realistic looking high hat out of the same material used for bottles that are broken over a performer's head. I hope the appearance wasn't on one of the many Tonight Show quadraplex tapes NBC threw in the dumpster before Johnny intervened. Do you have this clip or know where I can find it?

      Are you thinking of the paper head gag they pulled on Buddy on the floor tom? That one I remember was a Carson/ Shaughnessy tag team on Buddy. As he soloed the floor tom head broke threw and he had to stop and then I think he threw his sticks up at Shaughnessy. It was in jest and I think Buddy forgave them, but he wasn’t happy being seen by 15 million people and not blowing the doors down.

      @wizardgmb 2 года назад +1

      @@loucontino4804 I don't remember seeing the prank you describe but it definitely wasn't the one I'm looking for. This prank occurred prior to Buddy's number and I think the high hat was replaced with the real one before the number started. I think the best Rich/Shaunessy bit was the night they did dueling drums with Ed uncharacteristicly dressed down to match Buddy rather than wearing his usual suit.

The image of those vintage drums alone is worth havingAnd boy does buddy look Jewish in that picture! I think he got that set as a bar mitzvah gift that day it was taken ha ha just joking now don’t get nuts!

    I don't see how Buddy played with that 2nd tom-tom in the way of the ride cymbal. I have a Buddy Rich #80 model by Slingerland and am completely satisfied with it. David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) Posted 14 April 2019.

    • @spercoco

      Hopefully that helps you appreciate drummers that play on multi tom kits. The more pieces there are the more accuracy you need and dexterity to get around the kit; not to mention better reach!
