Barry played for us fellow students at Penfield High School in 1973. I remember thinking, "how does a 17 year old play like that?" massive talent. What a loss.
Big D - 1 - Channel Barry keener was a junkie and died of a heroin overdose. Buddy famously dumped his body in the morgue and played a gig minutes later.
Remember seeing The Big Band in Toronto way back in seventies and Barry Kiener, who I believe at the time was barely twenty. What a sad outcome . So young.
LOL. you are probably shocked someone is responding to your post from 3 years ago but I'm a big BR fan and came across this. Barry Keiner was amazing here but I thought Tom Warrington was heavy on his bass walk. Not his solo but just the quarter note time.
@@edmondutleyjr.4504 From what I know, he played his fretless P bass on a bunch of gigs and recordings for a while before going back to the upright. It's really hard to find electric bass players who played (or still play) this way so these handful of recordings of Tom Warrington are like gold dust..
Buddy loved playing with piano players that swung like he heard it too. Oscar Peterson, Nat Cole, Kenny Barron and Barry Kiener (here) were some of his favorites. And man, if you thought Buddy was just another fast drummer, are you mistaken. The consummate Musician!
I’ve read several places, Buddy’s loved playing in the classic jazz trio most of all. And in BK he found his pianist. Buddy, again from what I read, stuck with Barry through the worst. Buddy didn’t tolerate problems from anyone. Barry was the exception.
My father first bought me a set of drums in 1971. It was the old blue sparkle with 2 shell-mount tom toms. I had a hard time playing the ride cymbal with that 2nd tom tom in the way. Later (2 February 1979) I purchased a Buddy Rich model #80N from Drums Unlimited in Bethesda, Maryland. I'm completely happy with it. David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) Barry Keiner Perfil: American jazz pianist (* 1955 or 1956; † 25 May 1986 of an heroin overdose at Kingman, Arizona, while riding on a bus with The Buddy Rich Band).
Read Henry Bushkin's book "Johnny Carson." Johnny was expecting Buddy to play a 20 minute set like all opening acts. Buddy refused and played for an hour. Johnny was pissed and they never performed together again.
Will be long but worth sharing. Tonight the RUclips algorithm took me to watch the Buddy Rich solos. Never heard of him before… one tape takes to another where I heard an interview with Larry King in 1985. In that interview, Buddy praised Barry Keiner as possibly the next Oscar Petersen. Wow, what an incredible endorsement. Absolutely needed to find out who this pianist was. And one tape takes me to another. Sadly many talented musicians from the 40’s to today were lost to this horrible addiction. Glad at least there is a video record for us to enjoy their prodigy. Whomever put this tape out, thank you for its production.
I could never understand why they just didn’t remove the second rack tom, as Buddy didn’t use one. Everyone else knew that, except the person responsible for getting the kit ready for Buddy..🤓 After all the times he appeared, you would think someone would have known.
This is the weekend Johnny's attorney, Henry "Bombastic" Bushkin wrote about in his book. Johnny expected Buddy and his orchestra to do a 20 minute opening act. Buddy was insulted and played for an hour. Johnny was pissed. They never worked together again.
I think there is a clip of him doing the same song on the Dinah Shore show where he plays what I believe is his last slingerling kid that's also a nice post I can't seem to find it anymore
@@thecrippledrummer fuck Barry kiener. Buddy dropped his dead body in morgue and played the next show. He despised drug addicts and musicians who were impaired.

Buddy displays just about the greatest chops with brushes in this particular piece that I have ever heard... thanks for this awesome post!
Check out his performance on "Standing Up In A Hammock" from the album, "The New One" (1967).
He was a tremendous brush player! Knew all the tricks. 👍
Music like this never ages.
To all who had missed out on listening to Barry Kiener, you really missed out. He was amazing. Fantastic Trio display. Thanks for posting this.
Big D - 1 - Channel Barry keener was a junkie and died of a heroin overdose. Buddy famously dumped his body in the morgue and played a gig minutes later.
Buddy is the best drummer I’ve ever seen
RIP
Barry fit perfectly with Buddy, and I heard them create some incredible music together.
Amazing trio. Pianist was such a gifted player. Bassist was solid. Buddy on brushes...smooth and crisp.
Remember seeing The Big Band in Toronto way back in seventies and Barry Kiener, who I believe at the time was barely twenty. What a sad outcome . So young.
Were you at the bamboo show in 84?
Absolutely....great musicians.
Great performance by Buddy and his "Duo". Barry would have gone to a long stellar career had he only survived long enough.
Buddy playing in a trio setting is sooo tasty. It still grooves hard but somehow light at the same time.
Barry was such a genius. His work on Tales of Rhoda Rat is exquisite
Micky Mouse is incredible !!!
It's so sad he didn't record a trio album with Kiener and Warrington!!
You should credit Tom Warrington on bass, the guy is an amazing player on both electric and upright.

@@blue81blue81tom played in the hauge. Idk why I mentioned that but i did
I’m surprised he wasn’t playing the upright.

also Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk
Not sure about Bud Powell although he did perform Bouncin with Bud

Master of the brushes! Awesome....
dino de luca And Barry Kiener, Tom Warrington masters of the bass and piano
Pure genius musicians, swinging their asses off. I love the sound of the fretless bass..
Bill Evans couldn’t be everywhere so God created Barry Kiener.

Letterman also a guest. First time I've seen Buddy & David together in the same room!

Johnny and Buddy together in Vegas? I want a time machine to see that!

Buddy had some great piano men. Add Bob Kaye and Bill Cunliffe to list as well as the great Barry Kiener.
Add Kenny Barron to that list too Rich's earlier work with him was terrific.
Buddy rich yes and great.
Let's not forget Bob Dogan and John Bunch.
I could never understand why they just didn’t remove the second rack tom, as Buddy didn’t use one.

After all the times he appeared, you would think someone would have known.
I betcha Ed did that just to prank him...
Much of his visual artistry was certainly based on his usual setup.. he referred to it as a perfect setup.. but close your eyes and you’d never know.

I need to pick up that book👍🏻
Great book, revealing, it told things about Johnny that many did not know.
Kate Mulgrew.........would have been 24 then. dang time flies. and keep the BR vids coming. love his interaction with Johnny.
I think there is a clip of him doing the same song on the Dinah Shore show where he plays what I believe is his last slingerling kid that's also a nice post I can't seem to find it anymore
There was a clip where he played Chick Corea's "LA Fiesta" on Dinah Shore's talk show.
When was the last time you heard a jazz trio playing a great Gershwin tune on any of these night talk shows? They are too busy promoting crap.
“Our Love is Here to Stay” was one of Johnny’s favorite songs.
Johnny also adored the chart Here's that Rainy Day.
that is so true !!! Buddy will always be above today's crap
Bill Evans quote @ 11:24.
great ear
when Buddy Rich wasn't on the Tonight Show?
Is David letterman sitting there?
777jones Yup!! that’s him!!!!
Yes
what did Buddy say about his marriage that was bleeped out?
Anyone know the name of the closing tune on this?
I have always wondered if Buddy Rich was Mr Spocks father and Spock is his love child.
Great! But I hate the sound of electric basses. In Jazz mainstreem > acoustic ones.
Same here.
Electric basses have their place but I understand why acoustic would be preferred
Whats the name of This absolute gem of a song?
"Our Love Is Here To Stay" by Gerswhin

Which one is Barry here ? You never win with heroin. Such a waste.

For those 3 who didn't like it Obviously doesn't play the Drums 😃
Yeah it's too bad he had a monkey and left us so early..,
Pianist is getting paid by the note
Barry Kiener was on his way to becoming one of the greatest pianists in jazz when he od’d on heroin.
What a shame about Barry dying, he was such a virtuoso. He just played so beautifully.
