  • They say the clothes make the man, but often times, the clothes make the movie. A well-designed wardrobe of costume can be incredibly important to a film’s mis-en-scene. Here are our 10 favorite accomplishments in movie costuming ever. Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
    What did you think of the list? Any famous costumes or fashion looks you think we left off? What do you think is the the greatest movie costume ever? What other topics would you like to see us cover in future CineFix Movie Lists?

    THE LIST
    The Fifth Element (1997)
    Costumes by: John Paul Gaultier
    What CAN’T we say about the costumes in the Fifth Element? Is there any character whose personality is better summed up by his outfit than Ruby Rhod - in Sci Fi or otherwise?
    Hero (2002)
    The spate of wire fu movies in the early 2000s featured some beautiful movements, but the costume design was equally as evocative. We pick Hero for its truly masterful execution of a series of color palettes.
    A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
    Costumes By: Lucinda Ballard
    Marlon Brando doesn’t need too much help to look cool. But, the costumes in Streetcar did so with a deft hand.
    The Royal Tennenbaums (2001)
    Costumes By: Karen Patch
    Wes Anderson movies are defined by their visual style, and the Royal Tennenbaums is possibly the best example.
    Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
    Costumes by: Alexandra Byrne
    The gowns, dresses, and even armor Queen Elizabeth dons over the course of this film are opulent and excessive, but completely appropriate to the story, set in a world where nobles’ garb was performance.
    Grease (1978)
    Costume Design: Albert Wolsky
    C’mon. The Pink Ladies and the Thunderbirds are the epitome of 50s cool. And while John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John can take some credit for Danny and Sandy’s cool factor, his leather jacket and her sweater set (or leather pants) have to be acknowledged as well.
    The Seven Year Itch
    Costumes by: William Travilla
    Marilyn Monroe. White dress. Subway Vent. ‘Nuff Said.
    Casino (1995)
    Costumes by: John Dunn
    Men’s costumes can be just as iconic as a woman’s dress, and that fact is on spectacular display in Martin Scorsese’s Casino.
    Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
    Costumes By: Edith Head
    Audrey Hepburn was never less than glamorous, and nowhere is that on better display than this iconic film.
    Wizard of Oz (1939)
    Costumes by: Adrian
    This film’s characters are instantly recognizable by their costumes, even when far away, down the Yellow Brick Road. That’s iconic

    • @mrnocal

      Cinefix is more film study and appreciation than WatchMojo. WatchMojo is more popular vote. I wouldn't say WatchMojo doesn't know what they're talking about...they use votes from users. Cinefix does mislead a little bit with the titles of their videos, though. They categorize each number on their lists (from what I've seen so far), so it's not really a ranking of the "Top 10" per say. It's really 10 categories in the list and their top of each category.

    • @Ani-gk2im

      mrnocal I’ve noticed that too, and it made me like this channel more, their knowledge of cinema is amazing, like I couldn’t believe they knew Parajanov and his “the color of the pomegranates”. And yeah their titles can be misleading.

      +mattwandcow Ditto. I like the scheme tho of picking a category. Breaking it out into sub-categories, ranking them accordingly and picking the BEST representation from movies for each category. It's better than saying "This one is #1 cuz it's awesome." You clearly see thought into why #8 is 8 and #3 is 3 and the one representing it isn't why, just the best example.

      James Horner (R.I.P.), Hans Zimmer, Elmer Bernstein and Howard Shore (for the LOTR soundtracks alone - which are a STRONG contender for number one) would round it out.

    • @DwightBretonvanGroll
      @DwightBretonvanGroll 8 лет назад +50

      +Nevi1097 Yes and no. The difference is that even if he hadn't worn the iconic t-shirt as a t-shirt but instead as an undershirt for a shirt, he would still look cool. But because he worn something that in that time wasn't the norm, yet so normal (everyone wore t-shirts as undershirts), plus the coolness of Brando himself did the outfit make Brando even cooler, and made the outfit synonymous with being cool. Now if the outfit was worn with a less cool person let's say Charlie Chaplin, the outfit wouldn't be considered cool, and we might never have worn a t-shirt on any given day as a t-shirt just like we do now a days.
      Sooo.. yeah, Brandos coolness made the outfit cool, which made the character cooler because he wore that outfite. or something like that.

    Cinefix, I am an enormous fan of these lists. They seem to be compiled by true film-lovers with serious depths of knowledge in film history and film language.
    I think a great list would be to do a top 10 list on the most important/influential film movements, such as German Expressionism, French New Wave and South Korean and Japanese New Wave Cinema.
    This would introduce your audience to not only films they are not aware of but entire genres/sub-genres of some of the best films ever made, while also outlining the evolution of film.
    Another possible top ten list could focus on B-Movie Exploitation genres, such as Sexploitation, Blaxploitation & even Ozploitation (being Australian, I have a particular love for Aussie B-Movies).
    Anyway, just to reiterate I really am a huge fan of these lists and the amount of research and effort that clearly accompanies the production of each video, I wait in anticipation for the next release!

      BenschMan2012 Glad to hear there are others out there who love Aussie Schlock! I would recommend the documentary 'Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation', which is an awesome genre based map to Aussie B-Movies (funnily enough, Quentin Tarantino features heavily and knows a shitload about Australian Schlock!).
      I have a few favourites, one being Australia's attempt at Jaws called Razorback from 1984 about a giant boar killing people in the outback. Another great one is The Man From Hong Kong from 1975 which was an attempt to capitalise on the popular kung-fu movies of the time (which also stars George Lazenby, the only Aussie Bond).
      You really have to figure out what you like, but I would also recommend Long Weekend, The Cars That Ate Paris, Turkey Shoot, Patrick and Dead End Drive In! Hope this is helpful, happy watching!

      Ben Braddock I have done little dabbling in Australian B-movie film in my inconsiderable life span, but I have seen one that I'm not sure if I hate or like called "Primal" (2010). For what it was worth, I recall some very memorable imagery, concepts, suspense, and decent acting all things considered being it was a B-movie horror flick and all. Definitely worth a watch if horror doesn't turn you astray and you want that Aussie flair (it does seem as though their acting is, just like their British cousins, a grade above normal Hollywood trash).

    I just can't ever agree with a fantasy movie wardrobe topping the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That amount of work that went into designing those costumes (and armor and weapons and really everything physical object in those movies) is insane and beautiful.
    Wizard of Oz is still good, though.

  • @henryw6167
    @henryw6167 8 лет назад +191

    Audrey Hepburn's wardrobe in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' was exclusively designed by Givenchy. Edith Head had little to do with it. She oversaw the making of some of the costumes and was responsible for designing the ones worn by the rest of the cast (apart from Patricia Neal, whose clothes were designed by Pauline Trigère). But in terms of costume iconography, it was all Hepburn and Givenchy.

    • @dannycarrington1601
      @dannycarrington1601 7 лет назад +18

      A note about Neal & Hepburn.
      They worked hard to keep
      Neal in the past; in the fifties as an interior designer with a Kept man.
      And Hepburn was all about the
      Now of the sixties, elegant, chic, modern and yet Classic. Like the

      Awesome!

    • @Sauric121
      @Sauric121 9 лет назад +2

      Nocturne Accipitridae Well, I'd agree that horror may have deserved it's own category, but the awkward thing would be that any horror with a notable wardrobe could easily fall under the other categories, such as sci-fi, fantasy, or a period piece. In which case they could simply be said to have been blown out of the water by their competition.

    • @nocturneaccipitridae1866
      @nocturneaccipitridae1866 9 лет назад +4

      While that is true, that they could be classed along with those other categories they can exist in a wide range of time periods from lush gothic costumes from movies such as the aforementioned Bram Stokers Dracula, to Lugosi's Dracula with a costume that is iconic and instantly recognisable. To more modern takes on the genre from movies such as Blades mixture of modern and old world aesthetics. I just feel to not give the genre a mention at all is a large oversight, when it contains some of cinemas most iconic costumes some now approaching their 100 year anniversaries and are still common sites each Halloween, they're designs that have endured and remained timeless far more so than many in the top 10. There's a wonderful feature on the Stoker Costumes where a large amount of the budget was given over to them in that they should be a character in and of themselves, and even referencing classic works with Dracula's final outfit referencing Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" I really recommend it.

    Despite it's current popularity in the last few months, I still would have gone for Mel Gibson's look as Mad Max in 'Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior'. Talk about telling a character history. The black leather uniform issued to road police. The missing right sleeve as a result of an arm being ran over a broken and was removed by a surgeon. The braced left knee as a result of a shot out knee cap. The right shoulder pad as a form of protection from driving on the right hand side in Australia. 'The tool' vest with dangling spanners to do quick repairs on the fly on his vehicle. Iconic badass.

      Not only Max's costume, but the other characters as well. The Gyro Captain wears a flower over his left breast and a scarf on his neck, which symbolizes his good heart in a horrible world. The Humungus has several military related attire hidden on him. Not only that, but the "goons" were actually given histories to their otherwise "disposable" to aid in their costume design. Which is amazing, because Miller sets it up to where they're not just faceless goons to get killed; they're actual people in that world who are the main characters in their own stories.

      Or all of the costumes, I thought they emboddied the characters beautifully. Especially Eliza's, from poor "guttersnipe" to "overdressed and doesn't know what she's doing" to "princess" to "refined woman". Contrasted with Henry Higgins, whose outfit screams obnoxious academic and doesn't change for pretty much entire movie.

  • @headrockbeats

    Hmmm, despite the aversion towards choosing "recent popular movies", I think LOTR should've won a spot on this list. A dozen different styles, with hundreds of variations on each theme, a huge number of people working on making them... it outdid every period piece made to date. So maybe Oz wins on being iconic, but that's just one criteria. The sheer ingenuity and achievement of LOTR's costumes puts several other movies that did win a spot on this list to shame.

    • @frostfang1
      @frostfang1 7 лет назад +6

      Yea, i dont think Oz really pushed it as far as it could have being that its kind of in a different world/dimension/whatever. It very much just seemed caricatures of what a child would think of each thing as, not building on that, or giving all the characters wardrobe an aspect that links them all as being somewhere other than "home". I understand the time, and that its a "kids movie". But i dont think the wardrobe holds up to the rest of the list.

    • @headrockbeats
      @headrockbeats 7 лет назад +6

      I suppose the Oz costumes be seen as a breakthrough for their time, given that movies were really only starting to grasp what they could do with Fantasy settings. However these costumes certainly don't stand the test of "All Time" (as the title claims), and in all honesty the designs and manufacture of these costumes weren't even that revolutionary within their period of history. Back to my rant above, on the other hand, the LOTR costume people had to put in what was a colossal effort to make their costumes, even considering all of the advancement we've made in the past 100 years of movie magic. Every single costume in that movie - and there are literally hundreds (if not thousands!) - is entirely unique, meticulously thought out in relation to every other costume, and painstakingly created from scratch.
      P.S. I made the Opening Post above almost a year ago, when I was just starting to watch CineFix. But now that I've seen practically every list video they've made, I can see a deeper pattern here: They simply prefer selecting _unexpected_ entries for their lists over what might be considered "obvious" picks, even when the obvious pick far outstrips the unexpected pick in terms of sheer brilliance. In other words, they look like they've consciously set out to be the "anti-WatchMojo", but they've gone too far in the opposite direction: WatchMojo seem to always pick the popular and obvious films over anything else, showing no real expertise in cinema whatsoever beyond the mundane, whereas CineFix seem to always pick the obscure and unexpected over anything else, seemingly to brag about their extensive expertise. I do prefer CineFix by far, but their way often leads me to a lot of frustration, and it certainly doesn't earn them as much respect from me as they seem to think they deserve... :/

    • @frostfang1
      @frostfang1 7 лет назад +3

      Headrock I just started watching a bunch of their videos today, and despite not being even an avid movie watcher, I noticed that too. xD And so far I'm most entranced with the descriptors of movies I've heard of a thousand times but never watched, and the technical and artistic information and concepts. So the order doesn't even bother me, but with one bugs me because I don't even feel like it makes sense on the list, let alone first on the list. But that's just from someone who knows very little about movies and cinematography let alone classics etc.

    • @headrockbeats
      @headrockbeats 7 лет назад +4

      Yes, that's pretty much my sentiment too. I don't begrudge them for the order at all (the order really doesn't matter, actually - they disclaim it themselves). It's more a question of which movies they do put emphasis on, what they showcase front and center, and what they leave in the background with brief footage or passing mentions (or, none at all). Sometimes their picks are spot-on, but at other times they just leave me scratching my head in amazement that they've skipped a fantastic example altogether, or given it a tiny bit of lip service, seemingly _only_ because it is from a popular movie. They don't always do this, but often enough to irk me.
      Maybe the real problem is that I've actually watched 99% of the movies they talk about, and sometimes I really don't agree that the movies they've picked are really the ones deserving the highest acclaim - at least not as high as an "obvious" movie pick that should truly be celebrated. Case in point, just imagine how much they _could_ have said about the LOTR costumes had they picked it as #1...

    The costumes in Tarsem Singh's "The Fall" and "The Cell" were both designed by Eiko Ishioka; they also collaborated in "Mirror, Mirror" and "Immortals." Had she not passed away in 2012 - may she rest in peace -, I believe they would still be working together to this day. "The Cell" is my personal favorite work of her, but she won an Oscar for Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula." So, besides Eiko Ishioka being my favorite costume designer ever, I really love Deborah Nadoolman Landis' designs for "Coming to America."
