      I respect the fact that you watch others forms of media, with different biases and all, but I think it's very telling that you preface 'anarcho communism' with 'so-called' - who is actually designating these terms? Do they have any basis in truth? I know for a fact that I rarely see any communist media outside of various grotty student halls... Furthermore, even if this were a correct characterisation, would this be a bad thing? Isn't it good to have a great variety of opinions being showcased? You're very vague with this term, and unfortunately it leads me to the opinion that this is simply a misunderstanding (at the very least) or a deliberate provocation/misrepresentation of the political position. I appreciate you putting a thoughtful response though - it it much a rarity in this militaristic internet of ours c:

      @Indie Ink I think that anarcho communism is pretty much a subset of the communist movement generally, with a differing opinion on how exactly to achieve the end goal. If I'm wrong on this correct me, but I think that an-coms don't tend to see the state as necessary to produce the end goal, rather that it must be abolished before any transitory period can come about.

      A significant percentage of any population like simple stories and clearly defined villains, they like to be told they are the good people without having to do anything for it, just by being born here you are good and no matter what you do someone outside these borders has done something worse, you will always be better than them.
      It's worth noting that prior to 1945 most lower class sociopaths would have ended up conscripted or in prison, either way mindless violence was controlled put to some modicum of good use by society in forced labour or cannon fodder.
      I have no data to back it up but as is befitting of a RUclips comment I will nonetheless state that simple minded people with a desire to justify violence still exist in the same proportions in our population though we no longer have the institutional sloptrays to carry away and contain them.

      Japan has some very unique oddness in that regard. They both own and deny Manchuria.
      www.voltairenet.org/article30028.html because to acknowledge why their military shouldn't own it is to admit they were indebted to a criminal empire
      Basically the war with Russia exposed their soldiers to western vices and products, as well as western gambling games, and that demand created an extensive black market the Yakuza filled. This granted them their first "billionaire" who then set up his own nationalist party. He's even important in pressing them into the war itself. It's not in this particular link, but it should be noted he purchased a pardon from the US too. By replacing the carriers Yorktown and Hornet. Legit had enough undisclosed funds that the price of _carriers_ was a mere inconvenience. Dude had Bezos tier bucks.
      Note also the Japanese army needing him to *loan* them stuff, like *airfields*, and his outright purchase of a US president later on. Good biography by Seizaburo Sato about this guy out there.
      Also his call sign by intelligence services is "Shadowman," pretty damn spooky.

    A point on the crusade; Thomas Asbridge claims that many people went in order to seek absolution for their sins. The reason why the warrior class in particular needed to cleanse their sins was because the Catholic Church condemned tournaments at the time of the first crusade.
    Now, based more of my own memory of other sources, 1095 was a relatively peaceful time (especially compared to the other crusade times). This meant the warrior class had no way of demonstrating prowess and gaining renown outside of tournaments. A crusade, then, would have offered them the chance to gain said renown.

    “The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war.”

    Wow, Thank you for making this. It is incredibly inciteful. In the English speaking world our history from this time is, necessarily, US/UK perspective. Our historians do not emphasize the role of UK propaganda so clearly. Frankly, I was taught that most of the stories about Belgium, were British propaganda, and that there was a lot of enthusiasm and exuberance, belief in the valour of war. And casualty figures were suppressed. That's all true, but you've really laid out the development in a much more rational way. It's no longer a story of: weren't people crazy back then. And now it's a story of: this is how sane people drove themselves towards madness. And it is important to learn this all at this time now, when propaganda is evolving in new ways we don't yet understand.
    Please make the next part about WW2! I know it must be a lot of work to do, you put in incredible detail. Thank you! You're providing many of us English speakers deep insights into German Social History. Even in the 1970s and 80s when I was a child, so much of what we learned about Germany was still hidden by the propaganda. Monty Python's caricatures of of Nazis, Hollywood WW2 movies. There just isn't a lot of comprehension of how it all came to be.

    Thank you. This aspect was never really convered in school.
    They told us how everyone just stumbled into this conflict no one wanted and then kept throwing men and ressources at it untill someone ran out of them, but they never illustrated why no one thought to stop the madness apart from "Well, people were stiill stuck with the medieval perception of war as being glorious" before everything collapsed into rubble. Now it's pretty clear what kept the madness going.
    I mean you would think the Revolutionaries would have received fair treatment after chasing out the nobles and the generals, after all they'd done that to end the fighting and it wasn't even the same government anymore, but in this context it would've been hard to sell anything like that, because who cares about productive solutions when you can just stick it to your opponents. Of course the surviving generals opperated on much the same logic.
    It was all such a bitter waste.

Part of it profiled each of the combatants in terms one might expect, characterizing the Belgians as “brave,” the Serbs as “valiant patriots” and so on. When it came to Germany, it described the country rather shockingly as being “The Enemy of the Human Race.” One often hears about propaganda “dehumanizing” the side being fought against, but never have I seen it stated quite so overtly as that!

      Its obvious that germany was painted as the main savage enemy, but it is not surprising nor entirely false. In Serbia, it's not Germany who is hated and blamed for the suffering of our people, even though they were the enemy and occupants of the nation. It was your allies AH and Bulgaria, who committed the worst atrocities and left an undying hatred and distrust towards them. The blame here is always put on AH first, and Germany second.

    In regards to the pre-WW1 European fervor for war, I've always wondered if during that period the still-living memory of the US Civil War had something to do with how late the US entered the conflict, or if it significantly shaped perceptions of warfare in general in ways opposite Europeans of the day.

    • @blahblahghost
      @blahblahghost 5 лет назад +18

      Fuzzy Dunlop seems pretty sound. Americans could remember what "modern war" looked like. They knew it wasnt going to be like Napoleonic battles. All grandeur and "honor". They knew that what was supposed to be a quick conflict turned into a 4 year slog were 600,000 Americans had died, and especially in the south, they had experienced total war.
      You also have to remember that Americans were dealing with a belligerent Mexico at the time, and the thought of sending troops south was a big enough issue.
      Creating an American Expeditionary Force that would go all the way to Europe was not something most Americans wanted or even saw the point of, Even after the unrestricted sub warfare and the deaths of Americans on the Atlantic.

      I do recall a strong sentiment of "isolationist" running through the country as well. It's "their war, somewhere else" sort of thing. A major plank of Wilson's reelection campaign was specifically not getting into the war, after all (didn't really hold true to that)

    • @nakenmil
      @nakenmil 5 лет назад +2

      Keep in mind that the US had a pretty cool relationship with European powers at the time as well, having had wars with the Spanish not too much earlier, and seeing European colonialism in the Americas as dangerous meddling.

    • @nakenmil
      @nakenmil 5 лет назад +12

      It should also be mentioned that the Napoleonic Wars saw their own post-war reaction of horror, which is why we see the Concert of Europe and the Metternicht Plan, which attempted (and partly succeeded) in preventing another "continental war" for almost 100 years (although there were certainly a lot of other wars inbetween).
      Interestingly, the Napoleonic Wars also contains some of the same points mentioned above, the idea that once the people get invested in the goal of the war personally, it suddenly becomes a whole lot harder to stop it in a sensible way. Keep in mind, that from the perspective of the French, the Napoleonic War was an extension of the Revolutionary Wars, it was about spreading the new rational rule across the world, and enlightenment values against the broken aristocratism of Germany, Russia and Britain. Those parts in turn saw France as a horrendous threat to their traditions, values, and way of life, much like the Western powers viewed the Soviet Union in the Cold War.

      +Enthused Norseman - that comparison of Revolutionary France and the Soviet Union seems very apt, but I don't see it get used very often, for some reason.
      *Hunter deja - If I remember correctly, Roosevelt renounced his jingoism shortly before his death, mostly due to seeing the slaughter of the First World War. Could also be from public backlash, as you've stated.

    I absolutely LOVED THIS! The history of the world wars, and war in general, is something I’m utterly fascinated by, as studying it gives such immense insight into some of the most fascinating aspects of human psychology; aspects of our psychology that it’s very important to understand, if we’re to think critically and tactically about how to improve the planet. This video a beautiful exploration of that psychology, even though it’s not your focus. This is different from your usual focus, but I think the perspective it gives is highly relevant to our political and cultural tension today, and the dangers of the lies and propaganda so carelessly flung about by those who control information. Cheers! ✌🏼🙏🏼✊🏼

      "I'm sure they said the same..." Well, if you knew anything about basic history you would know whether or not the revolutionaries did argue along these terms. Since this goes to show that you don't, you shouldn't share your half-baked views.

    Your videos are great. I am a huge fan. I am an American who grew up on military bases in Germany, from 1965 to 1971, and am a little dismayed by the alt-right movement in the US. These proponents are mobilizing around a web of alt-facts, with a skewed world view, and no amount of rational thought seems to sway their views. I am not optimistic that rational thought can overcome blind prejudice, but it is nice to have well researched narratives out there. But when your videos get 50,000 views and dumbasses get 20M, what will the future hold?

    I am a battlefield our guide. Of course, everyone sees the cemeteries and asks 'why?'. Why did they do it, why were they made to do it? I try to remind them that our view of the Great War in 2018 is not the view those at the time had, it's another, remote country we can only try to understand. This video has inspired me to reiterate how the information people were fed played its part. Your point about it fitting what they *wanted* to believe is most valuable.
