It’s absolutely the right decision if it doesn’t suit your style and you have limited space. It’s why I tend to buy and use rack mount synths in recent years. Synth wise - my Matriarch is always there, as is my System 8 and then my controllers, but if I buy a full size synth - it needs to be something pretty special that I will use often, or it will spend most of the time standing in the corner collecting dust. For these sounds for the few times you’d use them, there’s always VSTs which these days are pretty close.

My completely insignificant, subjective thoughts on the occasion of your video:
I have used almost all brands, models and types of synthesizers.
Not a single synthesizer still blows me away today.
Nothing is new, everything has already been said.
An oscillator is still an oscillator, a filter is a filter, noise is noise, a signal is a signal, no matter what type of synthesis you use.
It all bores me, and of course I can't blame any sound generator for that.
If at all, I only use software synthesizers. I've sold everything I've ever owned in terms of hardware.
I now only have a small USB midi keyboard, a PC and a laptop. That's it! And it works fabulously.
I only explore and create sound worlds virtually, and even here the sound gets on my nerves after a while. Unfortunately, that's the truth.
But well, this is probably a phase of my life, maybe it's coming to an end, maybe not.
Finally, the "UB": Who am I to dictate to anyone what fits, what doesn't, what should or shouldn't be made?
For me, this device is like any other.
Whoever enjoys it. Have fun with it.
Go get it if it makes you happy.
But from my perspective: nothing to write home about. And this goes on for years and years.

@@Sycokay Both are "my first poly" type synths.
But one is just very nice and the other one, is one of the best synthesizers ever made.
Deepmind, Nymphes are todays Juno's and Minilogue also maybe
The PRO 800 is another one. The price makes It entry level. But It is a little darker/colder/scifi sounding
prophet 5 a synth that has been used in every genre for over 40 years.
Deepmind is also amazing and the 12, 6, rack makes It a very low cost, bit of a super juno.
The pro 800 architecture is more interesting I think. I have the pro 1 and had the sixtrack.
In de video's it sounds close to the pro 1 and rev2. Which is cool.
If the Ub souds nice, It reminds me of Deepmind, It can also sound rather thin. OB6 is much better imo.
and OB X8 sounds much more confident than Ub. Ub lack of presence that those type of sound need.
A little sad, they worked so long.
If you do have the Juno 6 or 60. Juno 66 mod, gives you VCO like drift, detune, PORTAMENTO!!!, unison, 2 lfo, envelope,
      "sophisticated arps en sequencers", etc
      It's fantastic.
Juno can be seen as somewhat limited but is an extreme capable and ultra productive synth,
with a sound people are in love with. A Juno will be more useful in studio's, productions, etc ...
It has a way of always sneaking in tracks and jams and do a ton of work, again and again when It was not planned,
and It was the spare synth in the corner. I had sold mine, had regret, kept looking at ads.
Had a Jx-3P, Jupiter 4, Poly 61, Matrix 6, Dreadbox abyss, etc ... still missed It.
Studio with 5 juno's had space problems because they had bought a cs80.
So one had to go. Good if everyone knows you are missing your Juno.

      @Sycokay 10 месяцев назад

@@Jupiter4Alphs Hey, by no means I wanted to say anything against the Juno. I wouldn't know anyway, since I wouldn't buy one as a hobbyist with limited funds. Had a lot of bad luck with vintage synths, the best experience was my JX-8P where you can be about 80% sure you get no hiccups when you switch it on^^
Was pretty bummed out by the Waldorf M, since I always wanted a Microwave 1 but didn't want to put so much money in an ancient piece of technology...but no, Waldorf didn't get it right.
And when I listen to the (imho) underwhelming UB-XA, Behringers upcoming Juno clone will be hit or miss as well. Will see.

"Its much too fat" is usually a great selling point for keeping a synth, not selling it 🤔🤣 The Ob shines for thick leads and pads, and delivers a whole wall of sound, so thats just the niche it fills. This seems like a great facsimile of the original. its still valuable to hear the perspective that its so phat you just cant make it work on a track though 😂 i could understand that, and you may actually push some people towards buying it with that message.

As someone who has only really started to make a lot of use of synths in the last couple of years, I’m glad to hear what you say here. Despite the many records I enjoy that feature the OB-Xa, I find it really hard to fit synths that go for that sound into a mix. I usually find myself gravitating more towards Juno-ish synths and monosynths. Although I really can’t justify another hardware synth, I think I’m going to have a hard time resisting the Neptune-80 once it comes. (Yeah…I know about the Deepmind, but I’d prefer the simplicity of the Juno/Neptune.) I’m just hoping they do make key-less versions of all the new synths because I’m not a fan of so-called “full size” keys and will play them from my own controller anyway.

easiest is to double the osc stacking (making it 8 voice like original)
    enable voice panning
Use something like Behringer Sonic Ultramizer works great (in my case) or something similar to beef up the overall sound and depth.
    add some rev/delay FX

Your reason for not keeping it is the same reason why others will keep it. I like the sound of it, but it has a “wide” texture that doesn’t always fit into Techno as it creates a muddy soundscape where everything is competing with it. The Juno is similar in this regard, but seems to keep the width a little more in check. The Juno makes the show without being the show. I’m tempted with the UB-Xa, but find the ASM Hydrasynth gives me the most usable “hands on” synth experience for these types of sounds.

It’s great watching this video juxtaposed against the one you mentioned about the JX-8p (which I’ve also seen). You mention wishing for a master keyboard with poly aftertouch and a wavetable model. I don’t plan on getting this model myself, but what do you think about purchasing the 73-key ASM hydrasynth? That would give you both features.
It’s good that you mention how heavy this is. I have thought long about getting it when it entered the market, especially considering how economical it would be compared with the model it emulates. However, the part about it being heavy is something of a deal breaker for me. The next synthesizer I get is one that I’m hoping will be about as portable as my Odyssey. I am more than willing to forgo polyphonic aftertouch in favor of portability.

I just received my UDO Super Gemini and it is really a modern advancement of over an above classics like the CS80 but much more than even synths like Deckards Dream because the Super Gemini is uniquely, like the Super-6, a design of musicality that I love! I have the OBX8 and for the original Oberheim I prefer that over the “Uliheim”. But I do have a Behringer ARP2600 clone and that instrument does very well indeed. I guess it comes down to what timbre-palette you are looking to build. Every manufacturer has their own “sound” and there is a philosophy of design in the sound. So Roland has its own design and style to sound as does Sequential. The Behringer K2 which I also have I think is better than the original Kong MS20 (which I used to have) and I like that I can integrate easily with Eurorack. So there is a place for Behringer. My recommendation is that you try out the Super Gemini - it is an awesome instrument.

UB Xa is a pad monster, only reason I would want one, the 16 voices in stacked or normal, make this the perfect pad machine that will never voice steal.
I don't think it's going to work well for techno, you want to hear those oscillators open up, and the only way you will do that is long envelopes.
Good to see you know what you want.

  • @inperfectsequence7840
    @inperfectsequence7840 11 месяцев назад +1

Well, it seems normal to me that when doing techno the OBXa clone doesn't fit.
I have an original OBXa and although I don't like how slow it is with envelope, I think it is my best Pad synth and one that I really enjoy.
I don't use it for techno, but I do use it for house chords, and pads for down tempo and 90s trip-hop.
The bass is great but I use mono sound when recording, because I like to take advantage of the full power of the bass.
My unit is old and refurbished with original parts, its low volume problem is also like the old days, it weighs 20 kg and is too heavy a stage keyboard for any new school kid.
My OBXa unit doesn't have MIDI, so that's another thing that works against me, although I have the idea of putting in a MIDI mod.
The arpeggios are sweet and very ambient, it is a soft synth and has the Curtos CEM3320 filter, it is like the Prophet 5, Elka Synthex, Pro-One, LinnDrum...
Percussions are strong and the bass drum generated is very prominent, it is very close to an MS-20 although it does not have the resonance of the Korg 35.
I would never let this machine go, and if I didn't have the OBXa I wouldn't hesitate to have the UBXa, which is more compact and lighter, respecting the large panel that is comfortable for a bricklayer's hands.
    Thank you for this video.

Behringer tries to give us the impression that all great recordings are done with vintage synths. Some were, yes, but 40 years ago. But today they‘re not, modern producers work with modern tools. I bought a modal cobalt8 last week and this little thing at less than half the price can do a lot more than the Boberheim. So, if you in a coverband that plays „Jump“ that Synth may be right for you. If you after new sounds like all the pioneers of Synth, Bob Moog, Tom Oberheim, Dave Smith and all the crafty modular makers this synth is crap, totaly superfluous. Honestly I'd choose several softsynths over the UB-Xa, or just use Bitwig and it's insane mod system + The Grid. That sort of setup is just unmatched for all kinds of electronic music if you don't mind working ITB.
I think of these old OB/Sequential style synths from the 80s as tone/character synths. IMO they work best in classic rock, synth-pop, new wave, cold wave, ebm, electro-industrial, ect and other styles like older pop-funk, R&B and even Hip Hop. Prince had OBs all over the place, for example. It fit perfectly.
