George is absolutely a legend in country music.
He had a drinking problem, was known for hot showing up for concerts because of that, and when they took his drivers license from him, he was known for getting on his John Deer riding lawnmower and riding down the roads near Nashville to go get more beer.
He and pretty much all of the names he mentioned in the song are now dead. Willy Nelson/The Redheaded Stranger is still alive and just turned 90 this past week.
He is still touring and if you pass his bus, he still has marijuana smoke coming out the windows.
You might want to check out George singing He Stopped Loving Her Today.
This is older country music. Then in the 80's country music took a turn with Alan Jackson, Alabama, Garth Brooks, and loads of other singers began a newer sound of country.
Now days, the great Avi Kaplan is combining Folk, Country and Western sounds to make his own genera of music. Country music is mostly story telling and before it was Mountain Music and Blue Grass music.
All of this first appealed to southern, mountain people. We came from Ireland and Scotland mostly, and our ancestors developed their own sounds and stories.
We speak slowly, with a drawl and love southern cooking which consists of peas and beans with meat and cornbread and for years, our music was more appealing if there was tragedy in the songs as we had come from and encountered tragedy after arriving here.
Most lived deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains and most were illiterate, but they could play a banjo, guitar or fiddle and they sang about mountain life, loss of babies and loss of loves.

This is a tribute to some of the country and even rock and roll artists who did country songs of the past. Except Willie Nelson they're all gone even George himself.
George was thinking about how great they were and what they gave to music and wondering once they were all gone who was going to fill their shoes and create great country music.
Fortunately there was talent waiting in the wings like George Strait, Alan Jackson and lots of others.

George is considered by many to have been one of the greatest vocalists of all time and is a Country Music legend. The answer to the song title is unfortunately, "No One." George was not only one of the greatest singers of all time but he had a strong impact on a generation of stars that followed him. There are R&B stars, pop stars, and soul singers who give credit to George Jones and his influence on their work, not to mention the number of country stars he influenced. His passing marked the end of an era in country music. A fifty plus year career that will never be surpassed.

This is a great song, sung by one of the greats in Country Music. Sorry, you listened to this song now. 1st you need to listen to Country Music & learn about the singers. Then this song will make more sense to you. Classic Country Music is about the story telling. When you listen to a song, don't talk over the song. Always pause, then back up. If not, you will mess part of the story. Listening is very important in Country Music. If you what more of this music, it's a very deep well. So many wonderful singers/songwriters for you to discover. A few names to help you out. Of course more of,

The meaning of the song is all the greatest artists are gone or retired from music so now who will sing great country...........Silence fills the room because today's country singers can't hold a candle to the ones George named in the song. It's sad but true. George could tear your heart out with a song, check out "He stopped loving her today" or "Grand tour" Or he could have you rocking with "White lighting" or "I don't need your rocking chair" just to name a few...my favorite is "Ole Frank" George was just the best, no one can fill his shoes.

Yes, up until Jeorge Jones died he was considered to be a living legend. In this song you have a man that had shaped country music to what I believe its golden years. He has contributed a lot to country music. And being a legend himself paying tribute to all of the other legends that he names off in this song. Asking the question, Who's Going to Fill There Shoes??? At the top of his game giving credit to all the greats in country music.

According to Garth Brooks, there is a holy trinity of country music. First and foremost, is Hank Williams Sr. His songs resonate with a lot of people, and still influence a lot of artists to this day. He is the grandfather of country music. Secondly, you got Merle Haggard. Merle is the kind of artist that artists would love to be. He lived a rough life, and hearing Johnny Cash while in prison turned his life around and inspired him to be a musician. Little did he know, he would inspire and influence so many that would follow after him. The last of holy trinity of country music is George Jones himself. He can bring you to tears with his songs, or get you laughing, and he sang perhaps the penultimate country song of all time with "He Stopped Loving Her Today". There are too many notable artists from their time to add, and there have been a number of artists that have carried their torch to the following generation, like "King" George Strait for instance. The common thread to all great country music is one simple phrase "Three Chords and the Truth". If that phrase applies to an artist's songs, chances are they are a torch bearer for true and great country music.

If a rapper wrote who's gonna fill their shoes....it would be about Tupac and Biggie etc. He named the greats that have moved on from this world and left us in tears. Now George is gone. No one can fill his shoes.

It was like seeing all the greats threw the years whos going to fill their shoes is who is going to be the next big stars. , Different people in music have that good roll , and are in the limelight for a short stay then gone , i seen his concert of 50 hits in 50 years tour , He started out in the 50s. And hit his stride in the 80s. , everything he touched in the 80 s to mid 90 s was big , He has possibly the greatest vocials in any music , He was know as the Rosye Royce of country music , He died a while back. Now their are only two icons left in country music that being Hank jr and Gene Watson, So in About 5 years country will go to the wayside , , it was hard for Geore Strit to retire because we dont have the quility entertainers around anymore , And Alan Jackson will be around forever because also no one will fill his shoes , , We need a strong voiced woman vocalist to just pop up in countrynmusic , and a few more tradional male singers to find nashvile or austin texas ,

Every one of the phrases in this song related to a particular singer in the past. These were phrases that were part of their musical history, or their person.

This is a song about the legends of classic country and southern rock music. You should listen to choices and he stopped loving her today.
