    David Allan Coe
"Tennessee Whiskey" is a country song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. It was originally recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name Tennessee Whiskey, whose version peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1981.

Chris Stapleton sang the song. George Jones LIVED the song. In the early 80’s, George met and married his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, whom he credits for getting him off the bottle. Around that time is when this brilliant version of this song came out. This is the version I go by when I sing it.

Dean Dillon and Linda Hasgrove wrote this song in the early 80’s. It was first pitched to George Strait, who Dillon was working with at the time, but Strait passed on the song, later stating in an interview that the song was not his fit. The song would then be pitched again to David Allan Coe, who did indeed release the song as a single and it was also the title of the album he released afterwards in 1981. Coe’s version peaked at No. 77 on Billboard’s country chart. Billy Sherrill, who produced Coe’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey”, would have better luck with the song when he cut the song again with George Jones. Jones’ version was a much bigger hit than Coe’s, released as the third and final single off his 1983 album “Shine On”, Jones’ version hit No. 2 on Billboard’s country chart while it went on to be a No. 1 hit in Canada.

      Yes, Yes, Yes.
BTW. Dean Dillon was asked what he thought about Chris Stapleton's version of his song. Dean said, "Well, my wife loves the royalty checks". Implying that he didn't care much for it, but it paid him well.
Chris Stapleton's version reminds me of Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You. There was no feeling in either song. They just took both songs and turned them into blues songs. Dolly Parton wrote I Will Always Love You to Porter Wagoner. You can hear the emotions pour out of that song when she sings it. However, they also asked Dolly what she thought of Houston's version of her song. Dolly said, "As long as she keeps sending me royalty checks, she can sing it any way she wants to".

Chris' version of this was more bluesy but NO ONE does country better than George Jones. The smooth way he says "smooth as Tennessee Whiskey" is just an example of what a great song stylist George Jones was. He is demonstrating the word "smooth". For my money, he is simply the best. He was not the original. David Allan Coe sang this a couple of years before Jones' version, but Jones is the first one who made it a hit and Chris Stapleton is the SECOND person to make it a hit. George Jones did not write this. When you hear a song and you are convinced the artist singing it is the one who wrote it, that is just a testament to what a great job the artist is doing.... he is OWNING the song, sort of like Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt".
People who were not aware that "Hurt" was a cover of a NIN song were convinced that Cash wrote it about his life and they even went into great detail talking about how everyone had left him because there he sat in that big mansion all alone. He was NOT alone. First and foremost, the love of his life and his wife June Carter Cash was standing right behind him as he sang. He also had a surviving younger brother and a younger sister who saw him regularly and he had six daughters (between him and June) and they certainly had never deserted him and he had a son with June who was in and out of his house on a regular basis. However, Cash delivered the song with such feeling that many were convinced that he was all alone and everyone had deserted him. Nothing could be further from the truth.
