I had to reply to your comment. About 35 years ago I took my then 3 to 4 year old son fishing in the Turtle River near its entrance into the Red River. I gave him a small jig to toss thinking he would stay out of my hair. Lo and behold he catches a 3 pound catfish and a 10 pound carp. I still have the picture in a frame. And, yes, my son is now twice the fisherman than I ever was.
@@bigwitedelite2900 I totally agree. It also helps to give a great sense of inner-peace. It's the best thing my parents ever introduced me to. Fishing was my biggest passion up until I was fourteen. Back then, I took my only three rods (nice setups acquired through birthdays and Christmases) and gear to a good friends apartment to fish his local pond one day. I left it there so we could fish again in the coming week, but it turns out that his mother was unhappy with his schooling and personal life, so out of the blue she sent him out of state to his grandparents later that week to "visit," but really just used it as an excuse to move him there. A beautiful sunny day in that mighty river. It was good luck catching two big cat fish on such a small bait as shrimp avoiding the small fish nibbling at it. I remember my desperation using anchovy as bait for channel catfish: just as it hit the bottom my rod tip would start moving only to catch one small specimen after another. A most entertaining video with exciting fights by those three marvellous monsters.

Great content and knowledge about fishing. Keep up the great content. Amazed you can stay so calm with a big fish on the line! Thanks!
To anyone considering trying this, check your local regulations before trying. Its a good idea to be aware of what bait is legal in general. Here in Texas, imported shrimp (frozen or not) isn't allowed for bait use. The reason is that they don't want non-native species that can transmit foreign pathogens into the water. Certain non-native live bait also isnt allowed because of invasive species concerns.
Try whole raw shrimp peel on. Soak them in 50/50 white vinegar and vanilla extract for half a day to a whole day. The white vinegar makes the shrimp tougher and harder to fall off your hook and the vanilla extract stays on the shrimp leaving a great scent. It's the only catfish bait I use. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Fifty-five years ago we used to throw Silver Salutes and Cherry Bombs into the Red River to get our cut-bait - mostly small carp. They would come floating up and we would wade in carefully and throw them onto shore. Great memories.
I remember all of the years of staying up late to catch night crawlers, or including a stop to a bait store before every fishing trip. One day I finally clued into frozen shrimp from the supermarket. As long as you mark it clearly so that no one eats it, any part of it that remains unused can be re-frozen for future use.
It’s good, caught a decent channel a few hours ago with it. Problem is, I’m in Maryland, so the crabs go nuts on it, and they make it seem like a fish is eating the bait, tiny little tugs
If you want to keep smaller fish from stripping the shrimp off the hook, use a piece of cheesecloth or if you have an old aquarium net you can use a piece of that to wrap the shrimp in before putting it on the hook and it will keep small fish from picking it apart. It will also keep the shrimp from being thrown when you catch a large catfish allowing you to catch several fish on one shrimp. You can also use a second piece of line at a swivel above the hook to tie the shrimp in a cheesecloth to and use a small rubber band or a piece of line to hold it against the hook so it swings out of the way after the fish is hooked.

Nice looking shrimp. Looks like something you could cook in a Delta Airlines bathroom along with some mash potatoes in the middle of the flight using the non-potable bathroom sink water.
To catch goldeye for bait use a small jig with worm under a float about 12" down. Castcand let drift off the tips of brush piles on the foam line/eddy line. Can always get a half a dozen in a hald hour or so. Or go frogging. The best bait hands down on the red.

Ive had many times on the red where fishing 2 rods is nearly impossible. Always a great place to enjoy a day in the shade at anchor. My favorite places to fish is actually tied up to a logjam on the downcurrent side. Far less snags and a solid anchor with two brush geabber hooks

I've fished shrimp many times in the Susquehanna in PA. just a little tip for all here but I use CHEESE CLOTH when I'm fishing shrimp...hooks stay in the cloth way better than in the shrimp but the porosity of the cheese cloth allows the stink to permeate the water...
The Red River, Me and my dad would fish that River in Robin Minnesota in the 80s when we we migrants working the fields awesome memories. Thank you for sharing your videos
In Georgia when I go catfishing, I use raw chicken breast and a pack of koolaid. Chop up some chicken breast into a plastic baggie and dump a koolaid pack or two into it and there you go, stays on the hook rly well too, Cats love it!!
Fish can actively change their colors. I have a pet Largemouth and Bluegill. When they are over the sand area of the tank their scales turn lighter sometimes white and markings disappear. When they are over the black gravel they turn dark and markings are prominent, like the Largie black line and Bluegill tiger stripes. It happens fast too. I always though it was an environment thing, where over time color changes. But watching pet fish I learned it is an active thing, like Octopuses lol
Mighty nice of you to donate a packet of such tasty looking shrimp to the river fish! Bet they couldn’t believe their luck! I’ve had good success on chicken livers and chicken hearts. Not a classy but the cats seem to like them.
Spung stink bait would be cool video. I use to use old dish pung and hook with some jar 🫙 stink bait back home. My grandad would only use crawdads witch worked well but in dry year's they could be hard to get. So I turned to a spung it hold sent really well.
Damn it man….those were some super nice channel cats bud. I am super impressed with how clean ur rivers and creeks are where ur at. Rivers here in Oklahoma are piled up with log jams and are super wide so like now when there is hardly no water there are sand bars all throughout them. Granted the log jams are absolute money for huge flat heads and blues but ur rivers look bad ass. Great video as always bud.
Try the shrimp Texas rig style. It's almost 100% snag free. The only difference is you go through the head and follow the contour of the shrimp leaving the hook out. Not that you need any advice. 🤣 Love your content 👍
You should look in to tying a bait loop for fishing the shrimp. We use them in the northwest for fishing bait for salmon. It keeps the bait on pretty well. Or mikes magic thread. Wrap your shrimp to your hook and you could fish the same shrimp for the whole day 😂 people use the magic thread for sturgeon fishing which is pretty much the exact same method you’re using. Your videos are rad! Keep doing what you do!
I’ll have to check that out! Usually I’ll just toss on some cut bait, it stays on the hook great, but I figured I’d try something different on this trip. We used to use shrimp a lot night fishing with light up bobbers on the river back when I was in my early 20’s getting back into fishing.
I use Food Lion brand raw shrimp when I go catfishing, it's always my go-to on Lake Norman in NC. Glad to see you get the jitters in your hands too, the thrill of pulling in a monster cat is unlike any other
They are my fav cattish bait. Sturdier than worms, no mess, fit perfectly on a bigger circle hook, and after done fishing can put them back in the freezer for next time.

I went a bought a kayak this summer to try it out after watching you.. you make it look so easy!! 😂👍🏼
Only you could catch a smallmouth bass on the red River. You are the smallmouth whisperer. I always enjoy your show. Thanks for a great show
It's not hard to catch smallies on the red. Catch them all the time fishing paddletails for walleyes.
In Georgia when I go catfishing, I use raw chicken breast and a pack of koolaid. Chop up some chicken breast into a plastic baggie and dump a koolaid pack or two into it and there you go, stays on the hook rly well too, Cats love it!!
What flavor cool aid. Does it matter?
I only use red but I’m sure it doesn’t matter, I’ve never tried any other color
Wowzers that's great looking catfish, I'll have to try scrimp out, another tip is Beef Liver soaked in vanilla extract as well. Give it a try as well.
Always love to see a notification that you have posted a video. Congratulations on another good day of fishing. 🍀
Great to see you out again bro!
My Coffee and I were just waiting on this video. Great video man.
Them smallmouth must follow you around. Great video again.
Awesome fish & nice scenery. I'd fry up a catfish with the leftover shrimp.
Man I have new respect for those Triumph rods. Medium Heavy handling a 20 pound Channel Cat!
They’re great rods!
This really look SOO fun! Good job!
I use Food Lion brand raw shrimp when I go catfishing, it's always my go-to on Lake Norman in NC. Glad to see you get the jitters in your hands too, the thrill of pulling in a monster cat is unlike any other
i love using shrimp! i use the shrimp thats not peeled, stays on the hook a lil better. looks like a great spot!
I’ve only used live shrimp on salt water trips but now I’m inspired to try them in fresh water
They are my fav cattish bait. Sturdier than worms, no mess, fit perfectly on a bigger circle hook, and after done fishing can put them back in the freezer for next time.
@@razdog76hey work very well. Ive even caught a big some bass with shrimp not expecting it.
I think that Smalley might have been a Meanmouth. We have quite a few of thise in The Ozarks. If you are ever this way and want to fish the Ozarks let me know!
