I thought I'd make another suggestion, if interested. "Brits Try New York Pizza For the First Time!!" (by the channel: JOLLY) --JOLLY is a RUclips channel created by Joshua Daryl "Josh" Carrott & Oliver John "Ollie" Kendal, two British youtubers. On there channel, they visit various places and try different foods. Recently they've been exploring America's diverse cuisine. Anyway, I don't know if this would be something that you'd find interesting, but I thought I'd make the suggestion. Peace out

My father was born in Algiers, as well as his father and grand father. They left only a few years after the independence, as they wanted to stay in what they saw in their country and become algerians, but they were violently rejected by the local population for having been colonials until then.
My grandfather used to be one of the "good" colonials, in tune with the algerians' cultural and religious customs. He took great pride, for example, in being the only team leader at his work to organize his team differently during Ramadan so everyone could take turn being home in time to break feast with their family. Apparently he was very well loved by all his men (I only have his word for it but I believe him on that), and he left for Paris after the independence he was seen to the airport by a cheik and his retinue (he was a negociator for Air France and had talked to many local authorities to get the planes landing where they wanted). He was given a couple of traditional Arab knives as a departure gift, that nourished my imagination as a child.
He was very much a proponent of the "good side" of colonization. He acknowledged the bad and the ugly but put it exclusively on others. It was completely lost on him that he lived in an all white, gated community, and that at work all the manager were white French and all the Algerians were only employees or at the very best middle management.
The only sure way I ever knew to get him very mad instantly was to talk smack of colonialism in general!
In his defense, I only learned way later how much of a heart break it was for the whole family to leave, with the perceived double treason of being chased by the Algerians for being colonizers, and poorly received by the French for being "Bastard colonials".

Thank you very much, I'd seen your comment and couldn't reply this weekend, but it interested me enormously. This story is so complicated for all the parties involved. The "pieds-noirs" had to leave the country they considered their home only to return and be looked down upon by the local population. It must be hard not to consider a country you've lived in for several generations as your own. It must have been extremely complex and painful to lose their status and live between two worlds with rejection from both sides.
I was also fascinated and moved by the biographies and personal accounts of this period, including those of the harkis and Algerians who fought for France in the Second World War and who ended up having to leave for a country where they were suddenly nothing, where they didn't understand the language or the culture.
All the best from Lyon :)

Great Video! As an Aussie, I cannot throw the first stone. French colonialism is something not widely taught in Australia (we do spend quite some time on British & some general European colonial history) I learned in school about French Indochina but not Algeria, I suppose its closer (and we took part in Vietnam).
We spent a long time talking about British India, the Raj & Indian Independence.
The camera quality is much better than past videos and your vocal delivery was clear and concise (for a Frenchman).
    😁

I have a question about the French new Orleans colony, is there any reports of hurricanes? I tried looking it up bit can't seem to find any confirmation or denial of large hurricanes happening in the French or Spanish south colonies.
I know if I saw a hurricane after coming from the old world I would believe in God instantly.

Thank you very much, yes it's human nature to go and smash your neighbour's face in to take his stuff. As for the video on the rearmament fiasco: it could be a good subject, maybe not right away but I'm keeping the idea in mind. In the meantime, you'll certainly find a lot of answers in the video I made on the rearmament of the Rhineland, where you'll find more or less the same explanations. Don't hesitate if you have any questions in the meantime!

I’ve had people bring up the red army’s attrocities when I speak about what the Germans did during the invasion, but I’ve also had others telling me that what the Red Army did to German and Polish civilians was somehow justified because we lost 25 million people. For some reasons it seems alot of people can’t comprehend that both sides of a conflict can be terrible

I am going to have to agree with the original comment. Colonialism brought these people to civilization. It brought them Medicine, modern buildings, roads, and most importantly the Roman Catholic faith. What do these former French territories have now? They have constant civil wars, death, famine, and are filthy. The French have no reason to feel ashame for Colonialism. Colonialism was a blessing to these people.
