Incredible! I was a javelin thrower pre internet days and we scoured books and made up training programs that we thought might help. Todays throwers are so lucky to have access to info from experts like this. Also if we wanted to video ourselves throwing it was a major undertaking with video cameras etc, now it's a friend and a mobile phone! I am sure info like this would have improved me massively.

Special/specific power, not strength, is the most important part of explosive training for javelin throwers. Over weight balls and javelins as well as med balls from stand and a few steps give near immediate improvement in throw distance because they address multiple important aspects in one exercise: power developed in the actual throwing motion, using the whole body; specific mobility/flexibility to improve the range of power application to the spear; rhythm and sequence of movement of body segments (from the ground up) for a fast, whip like action and, when using overweight javelins, you gain alignment/point control. Another very useful, but seldom done, power & technical development exercise is to throw normal weight javelin from short run wearing a weighted vest. work with a vest is superior to pulling a sled because you maintain correct torso posture with a vest, but you tend to lean forward with a sled: a bad habit that's hard to break. A final point- the big lifting numbers in clean and bench by Pitkamaki, Vetter and Thorkildsen are done by very experienced athletes with a decade or more of very specialized training behind them....all other aspects of their throw are well established, so having a "bigger engine" is a help, as they already "know how to drive the car". If you're a high school or young college thrower (or you coach them), your best "bang for the buck" in training is in special power/throwing power work, where you improve specific throwing power by simulating the event with light/moderate resistance or load. work in the gym is more ancillary or supplemental. It's very easy to get caught up in big lifting numbers, but heavier lifts do not always lead to longer javelin throws, so learn to "drive" before you worry about a "bigger engine". There are some very good, important things mentioned in this video, especially in addressing your weak areas (always keep balance in training aspects), but remember that a lot of great javelin throwers threw over 80m/262ft well before weight training was ever involved.

I love this reply. I’ve began training javelin after a long baseball career and studying sports sciences, and agree. I started javelin because of the similarities to throwing a baseball. Unlike discus or shot put, javelin requires way more range of motion. When I trained baseball players, our guys who threw the hardest were not always the most strong overall (most couldn’t squat 2 plates for full ROM). However, these guys could throw a medicine ball for hours, or do yolk walks with 600lbs because the strength of their joints and in dynamic movements was nuts.
From what I’ve seen, shot put and discus start from a contracted position (of the shoulder and back), and so of course overall strength is most important. But in javelin, the movement starts from an extended movement, and what matters is how quickly you can start and stop the movement (just like throwing a baseball). The overall strength is to make sure the body can stay healthy and sustain the explosive movement created.

My sophomore son gave track a try this year and did really well with Javelin. This was coming off of his second year as a new wrestler (never wrestled before freshman year). How does he best use the summer and fall to keep progressing in both sports? Is there a crossover in your wrestling and javelin conditioning programs? He's giving up football to concentrate on wrestling prep. How does he make sure wrestling Conditioning will support and not hinder his javelin growth?
