How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Specs:

Blade thickness: 5 mm / 0.197"
Length: 370 mm / 14.567"
Blade width: 60 mm / 2.362"

Absolutely gorgeous! And yet another great video!!
One of the most beautiful chopper knife i have ever seen so far !
I've seen hundred of videos like this, people making so many different kinda blades and this gotta be at the top five.
Such beautiful design and the end result was just badass.
Thanks a lot!
Nice job!.buddy!..beautiful chopper blessings to all
Beautiful piece of work! Love your work Barbershop! Keep it up!🤩

Beautiful knife, well done friend 👍.
Outstanding!
Thanks
is there a reason, why you heat treat before pre grinding the bevels ? i find, that it saves a lot of belts, if you roughgrind them while the steel is soft
The reason is you only do the job once, I don't care about belts, they last long enough :)
I was going to ask that too. It doesn´t make too much sense to work on a previously hardened piece...until I realized the amount of grinding is minimal. With that jet cutter machine there is very little material to remove....anyway what do I know? I´m just a metallurgist.
Nice Knife, Great Job making it. The Maple Handles are a really nice addition
Reminds me in a way of those huge paper cutters that were in schools when we were children.
Thank you, I actually have a paper cutter of that kind :)
Muy bien hecho, buen acabado y un trabajo prolijo, lo felicito compañero.
Wow great work i want it
beautyfull knife, nice work
Thanks
Get to the Choppa! It's beautiful. I really love the blackened steel.
Thank you!
the maple handle is so beautiful, love those tiger-ish stripes!
Oh yeah, I really like how it turned out too!
fine work
regards
Nice shapes of blade🤩👍

good job bro..
Super Knife 👍 and a fantastic Job 👍
Thanks :)
Esta exelente pero si tuviera unos 15 cm mas estaria mejor
very nice, love a good big chopper.
Thanks
I am a beginner knife maker...this is a bit outside my personal comfort zone (for now anyways) but that is a beautiful blade. Gives me hope that with practice...one day I will be able to make the quality knives shown on your videos. Keep keeping on 💯
Good luck! :)
Gostei ótimo trabalho e talento
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya 🙏
Thank you!
what did u use to darken that steel?
Muito linda e muito perfeita!!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Exellent
What was that polishing paste you were using
A very nice Chopper 👍 the design reminds my of the TOPS El Chete.
Thanks :)
Any chance of a seax style? Genuinely think that would be awesome!!
B-e-a-utiful!
I understand that reference
Thanks
Que buen cuchillo!
WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pure art. What's the handle wood ?
Barber, what sketching program/software are you using to draw up the knife shapes? Does it translate directly to the CNC program to the Water Jet? Thank you.
what beltgrinder are you using?
does grinding the bevel make the steel soft after quenching and tempering
Gostei muito da construção desta 🗡️👍👏✌️
Is this knife ever going to be made again?, Cause I can't find it on the website.
What is it that you add to the water for the hot blue?
Very nice i like it 👍👍👍
Thanks
Great work as always mate!
I really like your design as well as the editing of the video.
I see that you are using Sharpal diamond stone, am I right?
You recommend this stone?
Thanks
Thanks. I don't love the stones but they're ok :)
Hello mister beautiful knife good job well done my friend
Thanks ;)
Definitely the best way to cut out a knife. I have a friend with a plasma cutter but I hate asking. I love big knifes. I’ve made a few out of scrap but I hate all the grinding. It leaves steel dust everywhere. I’ll just watch you. Your are so much better anyway. What a gorgeous knife.
Thank you, I believe there are many companies willing to cut out the shape for you in exchange for the green bills :)
Muita bonita a faca.
Que pasta é essa que o amigo usou no cabo da faca?
Perfeita
Nice
Nice job, great knife.
Which material white powder you join to the epoxy, to make not so liquid?
Thanks
Thanks, it's an epoxy thickener
do you do any commission work?
Beautiful chopper. What did you mix with the adhesive to stick the handle splints?
An epoxy thickener
That is the most beautiful chopper i have ever seen it could be in a museum.
The big question is, is it for sale?
Thank you! Yes, it is available on our website:
www.barbershop-customs.com
I see what you did there lol, great job
Thanks :)
Very beautiful knife my friend.
After the sharpening you use a paste to give a shiny aspect to the handle.
What is that paste. Could you ask what is the brand?
Thanks, it's a fine car polishing paste, any will do
where did the tiger stripes on the blade come from? Just left over marks from the water jet? They look super cool but I can't tell how they got there. . .
80CrV2 has these marks after hot rolling :)
I made a knife from a truck spring, but as soon as it comes into contact with blood it rusts, is there a solution to this problem?
What is the “acid” he is heating and soaking?
Now that's a man's knife!!!!
bravoooooo
Hey friend, how can I order one like this?
Top de mais cara
to w roztworze, to byla soda kaustyczna?
a noz zajebisty
Tak z saletrą potasową i wodą. Przepis jest w opisie, można też kupić gotową mieszankę - hotox
Bela faca
Piękny 👍
Dzięki
very nice... question ❓ when you heat treated it, the blank was rusty, wouldn't the rust cause uneven heating out soft spots??
Nope, the rust will "burn off" anyway
@@BarbershopCustoms i didn't know that.. THANX for the info 😁👍
Like it❤️❤️❤️
can it be mine, i like this knife very much👍👏 beautiful a work👏
Thanks, unfortunately it's sold :) All currently available knives are listed on our website :)
what do you use to get your blades that black?
It's in the description. Also see:
www.barbershop-customs.com/blog/knifemaking-faq
What's the powder?
0:14 what software do you use to draw knife digitally ?
I think, it is Fusion 360
Yup, it's Fusion360
Very nice. I kinda freak out when I see a water jet then a jigsaw is being used. No bandsaw.
Everyone has their own ways of doing things :)
Is there a way to re-darken the steel on the spine of the knife after the glue up and clean up? By the way though, amazing looking knife, always outstanding work on this channel
gun blue .
I believe there is no way to redarken it with as good durability as the hot oxidation has. But there are cold bluing products (with very low durability and not as deep colours).
@@BarbershopCustoms you could also oil blue it but i have never done it so im not sure of the temperature and if it would ruin the temper , pretty sure its over 400 C so prob ruin it
Что за средство для воронения использовали.Спасибо
It must be too late at night to watch videos. I read this as "Hug Chopper".
Hug splitter maybe :D
Is the water jet yours? Also awesome knife and do u sell it?
No, it's not our, but we can use it :)
