- The wiper switch on 96-00 civics are known for breaking easily. This is a very easy fix for anyone who has a couple of screwdrivers and 5-15 minutes of spare time. This will save you alot time and money doing it yourself. I highly recommend buying a brand new wiper switch over a used one. I purchased mine off of ebay for $46.
I called major used honda dealer. They said the part would be $300 and the labor $100: I knew when they said $100 labor that meant that it likely takes less then an hour to do. So I found your video here! Awesome! Thanks to your video I saved myself a bundle: I got a new part online for less then $40 and I had a chance to get the part for a few dollars at the local junk yard, but I got the new one per your explanation. Took me about 30 minutes start to finish.
Shops are ripping people off these days, I don't know what's going on. Maybe pure greed.
Very informative video, thank you. My switch recently broke and I was forced to stuff a wadded up paper towel under the switch to prevent the wipers from going berserk.
Haha. Yes. I've had to do that many times as well.
THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME RIGHT NOW 😭 i hate it so much now my windshield scratched up
It got down to 32 degree in my 99 civic and I pulled the switch to spray fluid to defrost the ice and it snapped and I was devastated so I called a private shop and they quoted me 300 dollars! You are a LIFE SAVER (and pocket book saver lol) going to order my part today so thank you for this video!
You're welcome! Glad to hear you were able to save some money. Thanks for watching!
Bought a new $56 switch off E-bay for my 1997 Civic after watching this video. Great video as the switch replacement was exactly per this video. Took me about 15 minutes. Great job Kevin walker! Thanks....
Glad I could help! Keep that Honda going!
Your video is spot on. After watching your video I decided to tackle this job.I like the safety tip about disconnecting the negative battery terminal. I would not have thought of that. I replaced mine in about 15min. I found a new oem replacement for my 98 DX hatch. I went to my local Honda dealership and they did a parts locator and found one across the country. @ this time there where 3 left now there are 2 New OEM's left. I thought about going to the salvage yard and picking one up for $20 but after talking to my friend who's a Honda tech. He recommended an aftermarket or new OEM if you can find one. He said the salvage yard may work however it is going to 25++ yrs old. I figured it wasn't worth my time picking this part. I've owned this car for 20yrs and always brought it to the dealership or if simple enough did it myself. Always used OEM parts. Realizing now that option my be dwindling. Thank you once again your your video!!!!
This video is helping ke deal with my 97 CRV. Most of the videos for civic have been the same number of screws and the switch is also held in with 2 screws,. I was lucky that there was a spare replacement switch in the car when we bought it. It's summer of 2022 and I called the dealership to just get a quote to tell you how much they want/how much I'm going to save today. I'm still on hold
Awesome glad to hear! Yes. Please update. I'd love to know what the dealer charges.
@@back-engineered it was just the fuse, can you believe that. Lol. People, check your fuses first.
@@joshtonry4291 if the fuse blew, it blew for a reason. You might have a short circuit somewhere. Fuses do not expire. Hopefully you have no more issues. Good luck!
No action at the washer fluid pump, also could use some spray lube at the wiper motor and arms
Dealer still hasn't called back
thanks for the video i have successfully repair my wiper switch before only automatic is working then when I saw your video i tried and other videos my wiper is now working fine thank you more power on your channel
It looks simple enough. My switch is intermittently stopping the wipers on the windshield when switching the settings. Thanks, that's a low hanging fruit repair I can do. My mechanic must love me, he gets all the hard repairs.
Very good instructions. got replacement switch at O'Reilly's for $72, vice $165 from local Honda dealer. Save me lots. Thanks.
This is helpful because my mom's civic is so delicate when she touches her switch it doesn't stay still and turns them on.
The issue is definitely the wiper switch. That is a very common symptom. Good luck on your replacement!
@@back-engineered thanks i got one from the junkyard seems like its in excellent condition.
Just did mine today. I appreciate you making this video.
Great tutorial. I used this to replace my own for a 98 Honda Civic.
October 2020 and very useful video I replaced my switch civic 1998 for $25 dollars.
@@starpolaris8892 where did you find the switch?! Do you have a link by chance
Thank you!!! Just saved me a trip to the mechanic!!!
I know nothing about cars and was able to fix mine
Thanks!. After $38 and 20 minutes my 99 Civic wipers work correctly.. only tips I can add is besides a regular sized phillips head screwdriver.. a smaller phillips may be needed for the smaller screws on the wiper unit... the two wired connections need to be pressed toward the connection..not the outside... Thanks again for the video.. it would have taken awhile just to figure out how to seperate the plastic column pieces..
Thanks for watching! Glad you got it fixed!
Thank you bro for help me and show me how to replace this thing.. God bless.👍
Excellent video,,,,, you took the time to explain how everything works.
$275 at dealer to fix it, I’m definitely going your way,,, thank you
Huge thanks for the video. Very detailed and took your time to properly show the locations of everything.
Thank you. Your video helped me very much. Got a switch at autozone. Exchanged and away i went. Again thank you so much.
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. Just replaced mine in my civic 99 with your help
My shit just broke on on my 1998 LX. Ordered a new stock from Amazon. Thanks for the video!
Your tutorial is right on the money!
Appreciate the video. Got a 1999 accord that might need this fix.
PERFECT VIDEO.......I WAS ABLE TO REPLACE MY WINDSHIELD SWITCH.......THANK YOU!!
You're welcome. Thank you for watching!
thanks for the tutorial! made this issue super simple to fix ! *2000 civic ex
Thanks for this video! It was spot on easy!
Thank you 🙏🏽 you’re the man! Changed mine out in 15 minutes! How did you get the chime (key chime) updated?
Thank you Dale, this was very helpful for removing the switch
Great concise example. Thanks! I did mine quickly as well.
thanks for the video . I watched this a couple times , I changed the switch in my Civic in 11 minutes , start to finish ,
So glad to hear. Thanks for watching!
All went fine until I pulled out the old wand and parts snapped out. I didn't know what was what, so went to mechanic. A close up of the old and new would be useful. I was one step from doing this solo. For a woman, I am ok with that. My mechanic wasn't going to charge me, because I had all apart and one piece/step left. I then, reassembled it. I slipped him some cash for his time. Thank you for the video.
God I miss the simplicity and common sense of the old Hondas.
Great easy to watch & use video!
Thank you ,,,,, I got my kid to do it,,,, we had fun doing this together ( you know the bonding ting),,,, Thank you again ,,, can you do a video to reset the airbags. ,,,,,
I will try to do a video on airbag reset. It can be a little challenging but not hard at all.
Thanks to the video the replacement went fine, but it all seems dead now. Before the wiper was stuck on and I tried the old broken switch, nothing moves now. I've checked and replaced all fuses. What else could it be? I used a new switch. I think it's more likely I'm missing something than the new switch is bad.
It does sound to me like maybe a fuse has blown or maybe a wire has been depinned from the plug. But, I really can't be sure. Good luck to you.
This is very helpful! Thank you. I’m unsure if you check the comments still, but what size screw driver did you use? They look tiny lol
Not sure the size. Pretty standard screwdriver. Maybe on the smaller side.
Thank you! Got it in and out with your help haha
Bro you are the man. Thank you.
Great vid nicely done thanks for taking the time to do this vid very helpful!
Do they have windshield wiper fluid buttons
Very helpful thanks for posting
I don’t know if your still responding to comments but I have a 98’ Honda dx I just bought it, the bottom plug for the windshield wipers is gone. There’s no electrical lines going to the plug? My windshield wipers don’t work at all. Any suggestions?
That's very odd. If the wires were cut, then there should be wiring somewhere if you trace it far back enough. Are you talking about the plug going to the switch or to the actual wiper motor?
@@back-engineered the plug for the switch, the bottom plug, there’s nothing connected to the clear/yellow plug thing, no wires connected like yours
@lolaluxe3045 does it look like any wires were cut?
@@back-engineered no that’s why I was confused.
@@back-engineered do you have a way I can send a picture to you? It’s hard to explain verbally.
Thank you for the tutorial.
Mine literally just broke this morning, I went to pull it down to do a quick clean of the windshield but now it won't spring back up so you have to push it back up for it to turn off, also when pulling back to engage the wiper wiper fluid it's not acting right either.
Same
I wedged some tape or paper under it to fix for free it worked without it wouldn't stop or slow unless I timed stop just right.I had to push it back in a few time
Thank you, this was very helpful!
They asked me If I wanted them to fix it. I said no, knowing how easy it was but asked how much they wanted. They gave me an estimate for $485. I should have asked if they were putting in a gold switch.
Can the right hand drive work on the left hand drive
That's a good question. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer.
@@back-engineered ok
Do these switches work with 1998 Honda CRVs? I'm not trying to pay over a hundred bucks for a controller device.
Great vid Kevin - I am searching for a new wiper switch for my '91 CRX Si - can you share the ebay seller you bought your replacement switch from ? Thx.
Sorry for the late response, but unfortunately, I no longer have info to which seller I purchased it from. Any new switch should last at least a couple of years.
My wipers go on a crazy rampage when i turned them on on dont wanna turn off unless i play with the switch for a lil bit so just changing the switch can fix my problem?
Yes it should fix it. Thats the most common symptom of a broken switch.
hoping this fixes mine too my wipers come on for 5-10 sweeps when i only request 1
great video bro
Kudos! Much appreciated!
Mine broke and I fixed I'd by wedging some duct tape under it to hold in place and it worked until someone tried to steal the car
Thanks bro 😎
Is the replacement part oem or aftermarket? Also if you have a link please

This is an aftermarket part. Brand new. I assume OEM is pretty expensive. This one ^^^ is available on ebay for $40.
Hello bro...my honda wiper is gone crazy...when i start the car the wiper automatically move..i wanna ask you..what is the main problem ?
Most likely, the switch is broken. A common symptom is exactly what you have described.
The original lasted over 20 years, how long do you think that cheap junk will last? Used Honda parts are almost always better than aftermarket.
The issue with these original switches is not necessarily the quality, it's the age. Since these cars are getting so old, the materials used to build them are also getting old. The plastic inside the switch ages which makes it brittle. After so many clicks, that plastic will give. I don't expect the cheap parts to out perform a brand new part. However, I do expect the cheap new part to out live a 20 year old plastic part. These wiper switches are notorious for going bad in the 96-00 civics. 15-20 years is great, but we have to remember that they're ALL that old now. I expect these aftermarket switches to last at least 5 years.
Does anyone know where I can find a 1985 honda Civic Sedan wiper lever
Very helpful thank you.
Where can you buy the part
Ebay or amazon should have it. I got mine from Ebay, but it has been a few years since then.
@@back-engineered do you still have the car?? I have a couple questions
Thank you sir
Mine lasted 22 years!
Thank you so much
Anyone have this issue? Intermittent setting only works with the parking lights or headlights on. Strange. I've had the steering wheel off several times to work on the column. Maybe some connection behind the wheel is grounding out?
Didn't show the 2 screws being removed
Sorry. It was hard trying to film with one hand and work with the other.
Thank you
Yasss mine goes off every lil bump
I added the 667th like to your video 🤣
Think my switch is bad, intermittent isn't working...
Sounds like a bad switch to me.
I feel so,will know when I get a replacement one soon...
Kinda like everything working right, plus at times that really slow mode works out just right..
Where is the relay for wiper motor please help me
Just did mine today. I appreciate you making this video.
