I have to say that Sean is a GREAT asset to your team!! That guy always has the best attitude, never complains and just DOES without having to be told! Dives in and does the 💩 jobs without a peep. Not to mention a fantastic mechanic (automotive repair technician) in many different aspects! Oh and he puts up with Hunter’s BS too, guys a legend!
What he said.
A reason I watch Fab Rats is because you get to see the reality of different ideas that work or fail never always a win.
I appreciate your transparency. Many folks would have left the design they concluded would not work on the editing floor. You chose to share it to tell a complete story. Good on you.
Hook loader like used for roll-off dumpsters. Lay the flat bed on the ground put the vehicle on the bed, then hoist the bed and vehicle onto the truck.
Knowingly welding something right over a bolt you may have to remove makes you a qualified Ford Engineer.
Amen and Amen!
Not just Ford!!! Caterpillar, GM, Polaris, Yamaha, need I go on?
hahahahahahahaha old fords dont live long or prosper
@thomasgraham5842 the 70s fords are still rolling and are now pulling high dollar.
@@thomasgraham5842 not true.
Don't be too hard on yourself, you're working out of a vision off your head and not from a print or drafted design. Setbacks like that is what's going to get you to the next level. I'm confident you're going to come up with something that meets your needs. God bless you.
Sean is a goat , never a bad attitude, just dives in and gets stuff done , definitely a rare breed of human , Sean if your reading this we see you buddy! And Paul , you always have a plan B dont beat yourself up , however the bed turns out its gonna have that fabrats touch and be unique 👌🏻 and to Michelle, quiet on set!!!! 😂😂😂😂
I love the fact that he just does it and gets it done and doesn't feel the need to over articulate what he's doing to the camera. I can't stand watching Robbie's channel anymore he over articulates everything
Massive respect to you.
You'll get it sorted.
It's so refreshing to see people being themselves and being honest.
Don't go changing.
Luv ya
Exactly. Only channel like this I really even follow anymore
Put a dump bed. But switch from leaf spring axles to air bag suspension you can deflate for loading. To lessen the load angle.
That is a good idea. I can see that working, plus, you can adjust the air for more weight or less weight. I have a 1923 T Bucket with air bag suspension on each end. I have a front receiver, and it is a hoot for moving trailers around. Just let the front air bags down drive under the hitch, then air up the bags. The bed lowering would do the same thing.
Or could you make it a Beaver Tail with dropping air bag suspension? Or how about a RoRo body (roll on roll off)
Agreed, I am worried about the loading angle. Now I see why a semi has the batteries under the step, easy access.
@@obroberts6533 a roro body has a lot of possibilities for different applications: flat be, container, tipper, etc etc. Used by NATO forces for that exact reason.
@@Bigtbuilderthey should look into military style flatbed like the HETTs use. Hook the whole bed and pick up and drop off
Its not always how well you plan something, its how well you adjust to the changes in the plan.
The scholar Mike Tyson says: "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face"
I'm pretty disappointed they scrapped the plan like that, though! Big disappointment over "looks!" 😞
Man plans God Laughs 😅😅😅
The best part is not the destination, it's the journey getting there.
You started this project to build a roll back so build it into a roll back guys. Mod the frame and ago to different springs to get thee height down. You have the talent we believe in you make it work.
Shawn is a worker!! Swing that sledge like a man. He is a man of few words, and good attitude.
It goes without saying, Shawn has turned out to be a pretty good hand. Things would be a lot different without him. just sayin.
He's not a RUclips "personality", and thank goodness. Everybody on here is just normal, the kind of guys you'd like to hang out with for a weekend!
I’d love to be their neighbour…… I’d be just as bad for projects. And I mean that in a good way🤣😂🤣
He seams like a very chill guy, doesn’t let the petty stuff get him worked up. 🍻🤙🏻
You are 100% right. But it's Sean.
Hunter has also come a long way from where he started.
I commented on the last roll back video when you asked if it should be a roll back or a stationary flatbed. I said roll back just for those who commented asking "when will it be done?". This is what we call "forever content". It never ends. That way I get these videos every week for eternity.
😅😊0
😂😂
Genius....
17 months they got this
This the exact reason I'll never stop watching fabrats.. mistakes happen when your on a vision an that's ok that's why we love you guys. You show everyday reality an not just the winning parts.. keep it up guys can't wait the the next one
Some days you're the bug, other days you're windshield!! Just keep on going! Great vid!!
Paul, Keep it up mate, this is the kind of issues that builds confidence and knowledge even if its eventually !!
Yea Sean is a true asset he just never complains always getting into it !! Hunter too is a laugh, love the way he always doubts Paul and comes off second best !!
Extend frame add a tandem 👍
been waiting for him to see this himself, it was commented on last week but I don't think the comment was ever noticed.
Or a half track lol
I love you guys at FabRats for a few reasons. First your family values. No one is born with a perfect hand in life but family makes it easier to play that hand. Second the humility. No one is perfect, but it is the way we deal with things that don't go right that measures us up. Third is happiness. Doing what you love with those you love, working hard and having fun. It is the dream. Thanks guys. Gives me hope for my life.
Hind sight being 20/20 I still believe "stretching" the trucks frame is the way to go.
You guys do a heck of a job especially with no blueprints. Trial-and-error makes for good experience and knowledge.
True, but sometimes it gets expensive. Ask me how I know this?
Dump bed/ tilt bed will still be super awesome!! Partial tilt with ramps. 👍
Sincere comment here. Thank you for “fabricating” honestly. Your team’s experiences are more like what I find when I do projects. Failure, replanning and eventually, with a bit of tail wind luck, completion… in a word, real. Thanks guys.
Paul, I legit had 2 days of struggle bus earlier this week. Brain fog was not processing. Great work laughing it off and working the problem.
still waiting for Paul to see that he needs to extend the frame 2 feet (min), move the rear axle back, maybe even put duel axles on it and keep it roll back.
Education always costs. Thanks for sharing the journey. It's still fun an enjoyable video. Looking forward to the next one.
Me too.
See, this is why I like you guys. It goes all the way sideways and you hold it together and keep going forward with good attitudes. You’re showing us what you’re made of and giving us and our kids An example of how to get her done. Thank you.
I’d definitely come up with some how to make a roll back work for the build for sure!!! I absolutely love roll backs and have been looking for one for a while that doesn’t cost to much!!! I have two different trucks already for a roll back bed!!! Both being Chevys!!! There definitely has to be a way to make a roll back bed work for your build though!!! But if I was building a roll back I would definitely want it long enough to be able to fit different vehicles also!!! Awesome video fellas!!!!
Paul just might have a rebuilt rollback for sale!
Paul and Sean sometimes a plan doesn't work as you envision it and you have to re-organize your thought process and you came up with a new plan for a bed for the Rat Back truck. The tilt bed should work for you. Nice seeing Michelle, Grandma, Gracie and the rest of the family. Hunter is so funny!
Instead of using the horizontal rails of the pivot, what's wrong with using the frame rails of the truck itself for that function?
Drill the frame, insert your bushings, and stick the bar through the bed rails. You can modify the rear of the truck bed to look like the rear of that pivot, including the ramp angle.
I mean, the frame is boxed, so it should be strong enough.
I wish I was there to learn. And I'm 63. You have fun and good stuff. Blessings. Wyoming
Thats what i suggested in last video. Is make it a dump bed with ramps. Far easier to build. In fact reason I suggested that, is I was planning on doing the same for my 1 ton squarebody.Nice job. Old man once told me the more you go backwards, the more you learn. So you dont repeat the same mistakes in the future!
Why not lengthen the frame put another axel in the roll back if needed? wall la, you have a roll back. May the force be with you boys.
Paul with that truck style a static bed with dove tail. Well, screams old school cool.
Make the rear hafe (the dove tail) hydrolic of some sorts
So when you need a dove tail, it's got it. When you want it flat, it can be a flat bed
I wondered why you didn't extend frame 30 inches ahead of rear axel moving axel back and set it up that way! But hey we all have different Ideas! Not saying either way is right!
What you guys have done in this episode is called
ExperiLearning😳
In the minute the Volkswagen started, you could see proud, papa all over Paul’s face ❤️🔥❤️🔥🇺🇸
Things not going to plan is a recipe for the most unique builds and new invention. Sometimes The Struggle is the trail to victory.
wheelbase needs to be longer surely?! its going to pick the front wheels off the ground when you use the rollback function. it will handle terribly with so much weight behind the rear axle on such a short wheelbase too.
Putting a third axle for support in the rear with lift so it can be raised up out of the way when empty might be the least bad solution.
It'll likely have some kind of frame work on the under side to keep it from doing that. Plus that truck/frame with the cummins engine is pretty heavy in the front. Might float the tires if you load something heavy but the fj and side by sides or the sand rails won't ever phase it.
That dodge frame is way too short to make a decent roll back. Especially a single rear wheel not a dual rear wheel. Your cab to axle length is very important to what length bed you can fit.
He's just gonna use it to put the Rock crawler on he's not doin recoverys with it
@@jeremyedwards7357 How 'light' is his FJ?
Hay Paul. I love you guys and your creativity to over come. I'd say keep the role back parts and plans now you know something about width and height of bed, which is critical to your future design. Which was not known upto now. Good luck we'll be watching.
How about a hook bed? There like a dump bed but you can set them on the ground load it and tie it down then load. I think it’s called a hook tender. You can make all kinds of beds.
On the positive side, bet they make something that is going to work excellent and look cool.
Should get Johnathan W to do a road trip he’d put you on the right road in a heartbeat 😃
Jonathan's a pretty smart guy.
He's scratch built or reengineered everyone of his wreakers and roll backs. He knows a thing or two
When Paul said that he was pissed I knew his frustration level was through the roof. That's the saltiest language I have ever heard from him. I can only imagine what Grandma Lolly would have said.😀
Create a bed like a roll off dumpster. You can put the flatbed on the ground and drive anything on it from your crawler to that mini cooper in the onX challenge then hook and lift it up on. And it will still function like a dump bed/rollback. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. You can even create different beds for it.
Good morning this video is the first time I have heard Paul cuss on video.
In my opinion your new idea might work better in the long run. Being able to adapt and change plans is all part of the fabrication process.
So true!!! I have had a plan A, B, C, D, E, you get the idea.
I use to work field service for Cat, and I remember looking at a parts book, and when ever they had a revision or change, it would look like this. Page 85A---85B----85C, And I have seen Page 85ZZ27. Sometimes one page was for 1 machine, you had to check the serial number.
So, even multi Billion dollar corporations have issues from time to time. Can you imagine the Foreman for that part of the build having to ok and submit all of these up-dates? Do you suppose that someone was made to stand in the corner? LOL
A little bit late but how hard would it have been to convert the old cabover rollback into a 4wd this truck is cool but is it worth all that?
The old cabover Isuzu was traded to Merlin a long time ago
One thing about this adventure into building a rollback; you learned a ton of good information! You will eventually build a rollback, and it will go so smooth you will be shocked! This truck is going to be a great addition to your fleet! Looking forward to seeing it come together under your new plan!! Creativity wins the battle!!
I like this team. Paul, Shawn and Hunter. They are fun to watch.
Paul, think about this before you continue, your wheelbase is way to short to put that long of bed on it. You are going to have way too much weight on the back past the rear axle, and have steering issues because the front tires will not have enough weight on then. lengthen your frame and move the axle back.
Yep. I hope the plan is still to shorten the bed
A few ft longer wheel base would be better. If I remember correctly it's being built to haul the FJ. That was the reason for 14 ft long bed.
There is a reason some rollbacks run smaller tires on them.
I hate to doubt Paul's vision here, but it sure seems like the truck needs to be longer to support that bed. Stretching that frame would solve a lot of his issues.
I don’t know much about mechanic or engineering but if you extend the back a little bit with the extra axle , you have a six wheeler rollback 👍🏻 go big or go home
It was good meeting you guys .
Always thankful for the day...and sometimes thankful for when it ends
Anyone else notice that hunter sounds a lot like Owen Wilson when he says wow? 😂
Yessssss I thought I was the only one 😂😂
In need of a Randle Update.
You did NOT mess up Mr Cox, that is indeed why you only tack welded it.
Now if you had drawn full beads on every joint, then you'd have reason for embarrassment.
In the wise words of your buddy at VGG "it'll be fine"👌👍😆
2yrs minimum...That's awesome!!. Keep up the great work guys! What you guys are doing is not a simple task.
Hate that it didn’t work out for you guys on that build. Better luck next time. Hit that thumbs up everyone let’s bring them some cheer!
How's that JEEPSTER coming along.....? Oh.....that's right. It's NOT.
Hopefully Paul has hauled the Jeepster to the crusher. That way he can get caught up with the cool stuff.
Hows your RUclips channel going?
I'd be interested to see what you're achieving with no changes or delays..
Pauly de rato, check out your belly at minute 9:15! Please do something before it's too late, my friend!
Don't call it a "dump-bed", just call it a tilt-bed, and put a good strong wench on it, lol, good-luck, and thanks for sharing guys.👍
That if you did both the tilt bed and a tilt tail. Make it pivot on the same point. May also be good to getting over things by adjusting your tail up and get a better departure angle. On top of that you could put a pulley in the center of the tail, and use it like boom for a better more recovery options
Extendo framo
If you had your brother back he and Shawn would have you squared away
Paul: We could start this day over. Sean: I guess we’re about too. Perfect comic relief for a comic situation.
I've been watching these videos for about a couple months now and it's something I watch every day or when the new episode is on I watch it it reminds me of another show similar but you guys do it a lot better being honest but there can only be one Fab rats and that's you guys you guys are amazing keep up with all the awesome videos
Quitter!
Welcome to my world Paul. Plan B is always better 'cause now I'm experienced!
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. Good job Paul.
Paul is a real natural in front of the camera, he just screws up with ZERO effort. Michelle's "How do you feel" when are you getting the couch in the shop???
Landoll made a Centerfold truck. The bed slid back flat and the frame had a pivot in it that would move the middle of the truck, behind the cab up which would drop the back of the bed to the ground. Always liked those trucks.
You know what I like when I'm down ? Free COMEDY with a twist. Nevers fails hear ENTERTAINMENT Souther Style LOVE YOU GUYS TAKE CARE and STAY WELL
Oh Paul, I’m so sorry buddy. That’s a kick in the junk. I feel your pain. But life goes on. You still have a lot of cool stuff.
No matter the direction the bed goes, it's still the coolest hauler on the road!
How about a slide back? Where the inner frame slides back, then pivots in the middle of that. So the push-back cylinder would mount to the middle of the pivot point pushing back the box tubes until it reached the back of the frame and then the dump cylinder would tilt it. You could still have cross members on top and bottom.
This is my favorite build so far I think.
You’re doin great Paul. Your mind is like a Big Map! Sometimes what seems like the right road turns out to be the wrong one. Regroup and start over again! Sean, you’re a great team member. Hunter too. 🤙😎
What I love the most about this channel is the comraderie between everyone. That and the never say doe attitude. Reminds of my dad. He was a self taught welder, mechanic, stone Mason, carpenter, black Smith.
I would love to sit in that shop and watch and help out where i could. And throw firecrackers at hunter 😅
Make the aluminum bed a tilt bed with a small dovetail on the back end of it. Tilt bed down where the dove touches drive or winch on the truck.
I think I mentioned the dump in a previous episode.
"Guess we're about to!" Priceless!
When you were using the lathe with the emory cloth, something I learned (the hard way) is you never hold the emory cloth strip in one hand. Always two. If you use one, it can wrap around what your polishing and just abour rip your fingers off. Food for thought! 33:36
The tilt bed concept sounds pretty awesome Paul. Looking forward to the next video
On my difficult projects I come to a spot where I thought I knew what I was gonna do next, but I just can't start for any number of random reasons. And then I'll see the flaw in my plan and the solution. Don't rush yourself. We're not going anywhere. You got the best channel on the web!
Make a 2 piece bed. Make the back shorter end drop to the ground. And the front longer part lift some of the way up, so that when the vehicle you are loading will be on it. Then after it is far enough forward you lower the front half, and raise the back half up until they are level to transport. Basically have the bed hinged in at the end of the frame.
Question. Could you merge both ideas you had & do a dump bed with a pivoting tail (sorry, I think that is what you called it, but I am not certain)? Maybe that, if possible to do, we give you the best of both worlds & give you something closer to the rollback you wanted originally.
Also, that for all the great content, ya'll are all so much fun to watch!
From the looks of it, Paul is probably satisfied it turned out this way - I haven’t seem him so unmotivated of fab work ever before 😅
Outstanding sense of futility. You were missed at Sand Hollow . This is why I like watching Fab Rats, Thank you!
Paul, having owned a dump bed before, I'm sure you'll come to love it. they are way too handy!
I'm sure your new design for the truck will turn out the way you want. It's wise to change things up when you see the original plan isn't going to work out to your satisfaction. 👍
It’s a practice run, the next one will fit perfectly. You know the saying it’s done right because you do it twice 😂😂😂😂,plus it’s more content for us 😊
If you are a mechanic or a fabricator you have definitely done something where you just stop a say wth was I thinking.....😂love watching the show and I appreciate that everyone trust to be on the same page And is willing to help or figure out things and tell each other
@Fab Rats Hey Paul, here's an idea. What about an old-school race hauler? You know the kind with the slant bed that used to haul race/stock cars to the track. With that kind of slant, you should easily be able to drive the FJ or the tow truck right up onto it.
Thanks for making. It will be ok. You will figure it out as you go.
If I had my way, that flat bed would be first! Then the accessories Paul
We love watching love how real it is and love hunter and Shawn
Paul, sometimes setbacks make for really cool ideas. This is gonna be one cool truck!
I enjoy watching you guys work things out and come up with some pretty stellar ideas. You can put a 1/4" diamond plate steel trap door hinged all the way across supported by some 2"x4" tubing on each side and in the center to allow access to the batteries and other equipment near the cab. The plate trapdoor only needs to be about 2' wide across the width of the truck bed. ??
Few Ideas:
Would it be possible to use a/the stinger to operate the roll back bed?
or
Have the bed operate like a tilt trailer?
That would move all stuff down lower.
Hard to tell on the camera but it looks like that should give you 4-6 inches less in height.
You could even have the dovetail operated by the stinger so in drive position the bed would be flat (Like a split tilt trailer.)
You don't need two tanks. You can make a sidebox to place the battery and all your rigging into on the other side. You could even cut a door in the side if you insist on it being round.
Paul being a rock crawler is always thinking about entry/exit angles.
