      @Hogedu AAA I dunno, Gnome's lately on par with lightweight DE's when it comes to performance

    • @mariozenarju6461
      @mariozenarju6461 5 лет назад

      @Hogedu AAA Have you tried it on Fedora though? CentOS doesn't really have the latest open source technologies, it's kind of a Debian Stable of Red Hat world

    • @mariozenarju6461
      @mariozenarju6461 5 лет назад

      @Hogedu AAA That also boggles my mind. I'd say it'd be more suited for touch screen devices, but eh. The world of GNU is full of mysteries. But still, I'm running a Snap-less Ubuntu on my system, and I have no complaints. Huge plus is an official Nvidia driver support. I kinda grew sick and tired of PPAs breaking some parts of my distro

    • @mariozenarju6461
      @mariozenarju6461 5 лет назад

      @Hogedu AAA Oh, I even went the Gentoo route once. But since I'm using my PC just for shits and giggles and have a separate full time job, I don't want to build myself a ticking time bomb. So that's why I went with Ubuntu

    Linux is better with a CLI than a GUI. I myself use Arch and it comes with a CLI (Bash) as the default user interface and to be honest with you, I love it. I didn't install a DE. If I need to run X applications, just starting them with xinit or nvidia-xrun (requires a Nvidia card), image scaling them with Openbox if needed, but still I don't use Openbox as my default user interface (just run it if I need it).

    • @altermetax
      @altermetax 5 лет назад

      that must be hard... I also use Arch but with KDE. How do you browse the web? w3m? Because if you use a gui web browser you'll pretty much have to have openbox running all the time

    • @usmanabdurrazzaq
      @usmanabdurrazzaq 5 лет назад

      altermetax, I launch a X application like Chromium or Firefox, with xinit or nvidia-xrun from the console:
      xinit /usr/bin/firefox (or chromium) $* -- :1 (or 0 for the current display)
      If you have Nvidia card, launch it with nvidia-xrun:
      nvidia-xrun firefox
      (nvidia-xrun must be installed with yay as it's an AUR package)

And then they try to make it impossible to repair said products by having parts confiscated at customs, and by making schematics as hard as possible to find.

    Can't believe you've been on RUclips for a decade Eli. XFCE can be nice looking, and your just looking at the 'core' install. I dont think its fair to say a desktop environment is ugly , and only show the default interface . Linux being a monolithic kernel and not an operating system in the traditional sense makes it very flexible. Where Windows will just tell you no sometimes and smack your hand, linux will let you throw your whole file system into a dark void as long as you have Root lol. Peppermint uses XFCE and it looks modern , while retaining the feel of familiar windows systems, although similar cinnamon is more elegant. KDE I feel defeats the purpose of running gnu/linux why smother a distro with a heavy desktop like that , unless you cant survive without every bell and whistle. Also KDE has a vulnerability released a week ago within the Dolphin file manager, just some friendly information. It probably wont turn into anything , but good to know. The great thing about linux is you can mix and match , using different features from different Desktop environments. You also didn't mention window managers , because that changes the look , feel , and performance of your install. That decision comes down to whether you like to use the mouse or you like to use keybindings and tiling window managers. These freedoms are what drove me away from Windows a long time ago. I am glad to hear you talking about gnu/linux , I knew IOT would eventually drive you toward it anyway. Playing with micro controllers also gets exponentially more fun & interesting when you throw a wifi stack in the mix. I know there are a bunch of Raspberry Pi channels but none of the hosts are close to as technically competent as you are. You can interface micro comptrollers with the Pi's 20x20 headers , incorporate Linux, you'll hit all your talking points with one cheap piece of hardware , which for $55(4GB) you can get with 1, 2 , and 4GB of RAM now. Thats a game changer , other boards support these specs but none are as well documented and supported as the Raspberry Pi .
