- Enjoy one of the greatest Harley Sportster clubs in the world! This one is part of the Reading Motorcycle Club in Oley, Pa. As you can see these guys and gals, young and old, love grudge racing their beloved sportster dragbikes down RMC's ultra unique 480-foot dragstrip. If this looks like too much fun, it's because it is. Come give it a try.
The Harley-Davidson Sportster is a line of motorcycles produced continuously since 1957 by Harley-Davidson. Sportster models are designated in Harley-Davidson's product code by beginning with "XL". In 1952, the predecessors to the Sportster, the Model K Sport and Sport Solo motorcycles, were introduced. These models K, KK, KH, and KHK of 1952 to 1956 had a sidevalve ('flat head') engine, whereas the later XL Sportster models use an overhead valve engine. The first Sportster in 1957 had many of the same details of the KH including the frame, fenders, large gas tank and front suspension.

Sporty best looking bike ever. Lots of fun too😊
Dont see that many Sportsters in Europe but i love my 96 model XLH 1200. Sure it will occationaly carb fart some oil on my leg and rattle my fillings loose but wont have it any other way:D Best bike Harley ever made!
I just discovered this footage today. So nice to see a bunch of Sportsters having a great time at the track. Thanks for posting! 🏁💯 Cheers from The Netherlands 👊😎🇳🇱
Finally something for the Sportster guy's 😎👍
Wow. Loving this. Girl rider here.
Very cool! I'm definitely keeping my 48!!
Man this looks like a blast
Girls bike my ass
Awesome stuff, love the sportsters!
Bad ass! I’ll have to check you guys out as I’m pretty local (Collegeville). I’m building a 1275 for my ‘06 as we speak and have a worked Ironhead so this is right up my alley.
Now
Now (still, again, hasn't changed) I want a sportster
Yeah I recognize that track from the thumbnail. I cut my teeth at RMC when it was a dirt dragstrip. I'm old now but if I'm not mistaken I was 12 and on a KX80 when I was first seduced by the spectacle of motorcycle drag racing. I now live quite a way away from the east coast and all of that great 2 wheel competition. Thanks for the coverage.
Launching pretty hard
Man that looks like serious fun. I'd love to know what's been done to these engines. Got a stock 48, that I love peeling out, but this speed looks like a whole nother level of fun.
Get out there and do it. Keep the street tires on, don’t put extra money in the bike, and just have fun until you know exactly how much you want to do. Good luck🤙🏼
Pull out the EPA corks and butt plugs and a sportster will fly like a screamin' eagle
Hammerperf's got all the answers you need and you're gonna love it.
Hopefully this event gets some coverage again this year, really enjoy this video
What is the event called
@@marshallcox134 not sure to be honest, it may be in the video description
Love this 💥
Man this looks like fun
I can't wait to take my Sportster to the track after the snow melts to see how my freshly built bike rips!
Nice! Same here Im doing the hammer 1275, 120+hp kit can't wait to shred, the pipes i want aren't available so im building my own using parts from Cone engineering
@@grimeyhonkyracing3938 We all miss the patriot defender. Still have one on my 1275.
@@davidleonard8369 Is it stepped? Sizes? Lengths? Collector size and length? Degree of angle on the collector? Muffler design? What makes these pipes flow so well? I just want to see one in person 😆In the XL exhaust tests done by hammer they tested a Cone engineering pipe with a couple different bigger reverse cone megaphone mufflers that Cone eng. sent with their pipes. The biggest one beat the defender through the meat of the rpm range and only fell short about 3 hp on top. But forget Cone, i THINK i can beat the defender with what im working on now but we'll see.
@@grimeyhonkyracing3938 yes it is stepped. The collector is hidden inside so you can't see it. But on the xlforum there are some pics of it I think posted by forum member madness. I'm davesz1r on the forum.
@@davidleonard8369 thanks man I'll check it out!!
Oh hell yes I wanna come out next spring!!!!
Very cool.... Sportsters are effing cool!
Like to see an old stroker ironhead there!
,,,Luv it..........Been there in 2015,,,,,,,,Luv Reading MC.....................
Lovely rides! Sportster sickness for life!
That video was awsome !!!!
Great video , where is this track (PA ?) & is there a specific rule book for this sportster class , definitely looks like a fun class
I love my Sporty! Fast as hell!
Ill be there next spring
Good Stuff!!!!
CycleDrag what class are these sporty's running in that are on this video, street sportster, or pro sportster ? Thanks in advance
Great fun, really enjoyed this.
Sportsters rule the track.
AWESOME!! Wow! Do they have the swingarm extended??? How many inches?
Sportsters rock.
Whats cool is there isn’t much money being spent for how much fun they’re having
This video has given me the push in the right direction I was looking for. I was considering selling off my 883 but maybe I'll do a few things and take it to the track. Lots of motivation here. Pun intended. Lol
Remember one name..... Hammer Performance..... go to hammerperf.com
Convert your 883 to 1200, 1250, or 1275, and it will be a beast. I've had my 883 for 20 years and finally converted it to 1200, a little head work on the 883 heads, new valves and springs, better ignition/advance, Andrews N4 cams, big sucka air filter/intake, and Bassani two into one pipes, and chain drive conversion. The bike is a beast now, seriously fun to ride and take to the strip on Friday nights, but still totally streetable too.
@@trevorjameson3213 did you use the 883 heads with the N4 cams, or did you use 1200 heads and flat top Pistons? I was going to get N4 cams to use with my 883 to 1250 hammer kit but they said the valve to piston clearance would be too close for comfort. If I get new heads now I'll have to get new pistons again. I have 40" 1 3/4" straight drag pipes now but I was going to get the bassani pro Streets
@@trevorjameson3213 I know this is a old comment but I have to agree 💯 with what you said sir. I have a 2002 883R with the screaming eagle kit and boy it's so fun to ride or race lol. I'm glad I have it. Planning on taking it to my local track to run it this year, I think CycleDrag is going to be there as well.
👁💚 SPORTSTERS 👊💨
Cool. Is this a class of some sort? Except for a few, they all look very similar. Same fork arrangement, same "seat".
@THINK FOR SELF I think its more for quick placement of your feet. Having your legs down or even just one leg and then trying to put it on your forward control when youre blasting through first gear takes up too much time and energy i think
Skilled riders pulling perfect hole shots...WOW.
Thanks for watching. What do you ride?
@@cycledrag "Back in the day" It was a Suzuki T-500. I've had others but this was my preferred.
Are these bikes geared lower for this short track?
This looks like a fun class to race in.
It is, you should come check out a race.
@@cycledrag where are these races?
Reading Motorcycle Club, Oley, Pa.
@@cycledrag how often do they have them? I would love to race my Sportster against some others sometime!
@@jonnymac8925
They do 6 points races a year @ 3 or four grudge races
Nice
Early sportsters are the best
Sounds like most are letting off the throttle when they shift. I always shifted at WOT.....
Last race right lane was suppose to win, cant be scared
Sounds like alot of Buell cams, with is pretty common
What kind of seats are these? Anyone have a link for those drag seat pans?
Would also like to know
What's the displacement?
Awesome show, how much horsepower on average are most of these pullin?
Well a 2020 48 is maxing 65 hp at 6000 rpm
With a full Hammer kit, sporties top out around 126HP and 90ish torque
Are these sportsters all 1200cc and what rear tire are they using to hook up?
They are all launching from 3rd gear.... Or maybe 2nd
No Ironheads here; an entire quarter mile without breaking down would be too much to hope for 🙂
Thumbs Up....
Crazy, 3 gears and race is over. Wheelie bar allowed?
No bars
I would like to see a old school Sportster Drag Bike make a run. That had a chain not rubber band.
And why ?
and now one can say that old school is "air-cooled ones"... sad but true.
Who is the blue Sportster @ (6:00)?
I wonder if any of these racers are running Mega-Flo heads ?
Which year Sportster models are racing? What size engines? The bikes look similar. I would like to get one.
The sportsters in the class are limited to 1230 cc they have big compression & big cams. There is also a limit on valve size
Where's the bagger vs sporster races? 1275's vs 131's
131 Baggers don’t stand a chance
131s are running 12 second quarter miles, 1275 sporties are running down in the 7s
@@rimzul9466 sevens in the quarter? My 1275 runs mid elevens in the quarter and low sevens in the eighth.
fun
Best bike ever built. Hands down ‘57
No.
I always enjoy racing my sporty. Tobad noone races Harley's in Denmark
Don´t they? I have been to the famous Mosten MC sprint races, and they do race there!
@@completelyboringstuff204 yes i race at mosten aswell. But that All Harley racing we got other than Allingåbro motor festival. A sprint they hold near mosten MC in th nearest town.
I`m sorry to bash a club track, but 480'?
Damn, not even an 1/8th?
I`m wondering if it`s an insurance issue or just a matter of real estate?
Where can you get the seat pan at?
Which seat pan? Thanks for watching. What do you ride?
@@cycledrag ride a 99 Sportster and the pan on all the sportsters. They gave that I'm a back stop
They have that small back stop
very short forks , very short shocks , 6000 rpm and dumb the clutch and stock tires? is this the recipe to not flip the bike while letting the clutch lever? WHit my sportster if I let the clutch like this, I can't avoid tipping over..
Anyone running a straight 883 ? ( no bore kits). Thank You. 💯👍👍
Where do they get those little drag racing seats? And rear fender
They all appear to be running the Canadian spec rear fender (full fender with a brake light that also has a license plate light on the top of it), I'm fairly certain they came on some US models too but they are on a lot of Canadian bikes since the brakes and turn signals have to be a different light. My 2018 came with the same fender. I hope this helps!
Thanks! I didn't realize these guys were Canadian, i will fab my own aluminum seat and i already ordered a lightweight fiberglass fender, should be about 3 lbs
@@grimeyhonkyracing3938 I don't think they are Canadian, I just know that they have used them a lot on Canadian spec Sportsters and Dynas but I think they were used on some of the 90s+ american models too, but I tend to see a lot of the shorter fenders on the American Sportsters. I know theres a lot of 48s with the shorter fenders south of the border, a lot of them ask me where I got my fender and they are surprised when I tell them it's the 2018 Canadian OEM fender! I have a carbon fiber rear fender that I am installing with the rest of my mods this Winter. I already have a carbon fiber front fender and side panels on the bike so the rear fender will be the icing on the cake. I haven't weighed it yet, but I am going to! If I was going to paint it I would go with fiberglass too but I love the gloss exposed carbon look. I was in an accident in November so the bike is being fixed/upgraded now. Theres a few videos of the bike on my RUclips channel before zi started modding it, during the middle of modding it, the accident video where it was about 3/4 done and hopefully soon it will be where I pictured it haha
I have a 2009 xl1200c that came with the same rear fender
Ever figure it out ?
Cool! Now show the fast bikes next!
You meet one of these guys on one of these sportsters at a red light and they will absolutely humiliate you. Slow my ass.
@@poncoolride What kind of hp numbers do you think they run? 100-120hp ish? Looks pretty fast. I hope to push about 70hp this vinter, should feel pretty fun compared to my stock 883 :D
Fast bikes... Barf. These bikes have soul.
@@poncoolride LOL.. right! I've wasted so many rice grinders and even big twin harleys from red lights it's not even funny. It can even get boring it's so easy.
my tractor has the same sound 😂
And I thought my sportster was fast lol
I know mine is. LOL!
get good cams
Yes, that is an absolute must! And a good ignition system (the stock ignition sux, not enough advance at high rpm).
Sound like door slammers
480 ft, what's that all about, dumb run off distance?.
This is terible. I'v gt a old sporster. has'nt been fired in years. The sounds f these bikes make me want to fire this bike ne more time.
Some bad Bikes.
