Junaid, I love to watch your videos, thank you for providing an insightful analysis of Pakistan's defense and economic security situation and you made a thoughtful comparison with our neighboring/peer countries, along with a comprehensive overview of our food and energy security challenges, which provides a well-rounded perspective. Policymakers must consider these factors in strategic planning. Your emphasis on the importance of economic reforms and investment in human capital is particularly relevant. Looking forward to more content like this. Best wishes and I look forward to more excellent videos like this.
Junaid bhai, another great episode! I was wondering if you can share some success stories of countries who were in a similar situation economically i.e. prospects looking pretty bad, but then they were able to turn things around, and what policies did they implement to turn things around, and what we can learn from them. I can only assume that its going to be a behemoth of a task, but I cannot think of anyone better than you and your team to educate us on it! Countries that come to mind are South Korea in the 70s/80s, Cuba, and India in the 90s, and how Manmohan Singh changed things for the better.
What you have ignored is the economic empire of the military in Pakistan. This distorts , like any other government entity involvement in business, the basic capitalist model.
Great episode Junaid. Understandably you were a bit shy in pointing out how Pakistan can rationalize its military spending. Dr. Kaiser Bengali has done extensive work on that. But it’s best you leave it to the experts. In the next episodes it would be great if you could deep dive in the education and healthcare sectors. What can the private sector/ startup ecosystem do to address these challenges with edtech and health tech. It would be good to steer the audience towards solutions. Govt. won’t be able to do much in the foreseeable future.
Junaid Bhai, We would love to see a video about our military's economic empire, where the proceeds go, and how their involvement in economic activities undermines civilians' contributions.
Love the content. However the numbers aren't right. PKR 2.2 tr is Budgeted for defense services this year which is roughly USD 7.9 bn. Moreover, another PKR 662 bn is budgeted for military pensions that is close to USD 2.1 bn. So overall around 10 bn dollars which is close to 17 percent of the budget and 2.6 percent of our GDP. Meanwhile only PKR 103 billion is budgeted for education which is 0.6 percent of the budget and less than 0.1 percent of the GDP. Educational spending in india and china are close to 2.5 and 5 percent of the GDP, respectively.
@@PakistanAndCounting I am looking at the numbers announced in the recent budget(fy24-25). However even if you look at the last year's(fy24) numbers it's close to PKR 1.8tr as defense spending plus PKR 563 bn in the form of military pensions. For FY23, the defense number was budgeted at PKR 1.6 tr plus PKR 446 bn in military pension which takes the total to around PKR 2 tr. However in FY23, our budget was around PKR 9.6 tr making it an even larger proportion of the budget than it is now. Interestingly, in dollar terms it has remained close to USD 10 BN for quite a few years. You can verify the number from 'Budget in Brief Document' released every year post budget. The irony is that while we may have been benchmarking our military spending in USD and have kept it quite consistent for the last few years. Our educational budget has grown marginally from PKR 93 bn to PKR 103 bn which is a significant decline is USD terms given the currency depreciation over the last few years...
No doubt great content, awesome editing and overall great video, however it would be more appropriate to choose the music that resembles with the seriousness of the issue. It is annoying tbh.
