    VW might have issued a warranty recall on this. Used car guy should call dealer. Typically, this part is covered to 120k miles. The part number for the new version of this sensor in the form of a kit with a new sensor and tube is 07K-198-125. Because these sensors have been prone to foreign contamination and fail, VW has issued the above updated kit. Common VDub problem. The CBTA engine is ULEV and CBUA is SULEV (pzev) so difference is the 3rd cat/ o2 sensor for increased cleaner emissions.

    Very true about foreign & U.S. car systems.. And generic data online. You work without a manual or book kudos to you. Costly to have an actual library. In the past chilton and others would publish one large book for all U.S. made cars.
    I think they expect everyone to go to these mini college's to learn of the new computer controlled systems. Funny how so many have service updates after leaving the factory.

    Hey Erik when I had to do that secondary sensor along with a map sensor they look almost identical. I think the map sensor had the o-ring and the secondary sensor didn't. U said the guy said he changed the map sensor and he might have got the wrong sensor in it. When I did it I did notice they were different but without knowing about it anybody could make the mistake. Secondary sensor I changed because it was shorted to positive. And yeah after new one is installed it does drop down to 2.6 or 2.5 volts. MAP sensor I changed because it gave me a implausible signal due to the fact the pcv system fails internally and the oil seeps to the pcv hose to the manifold and contaminates the map sensor. Really only fix for that is changed the valve cover with the pcv hose and clean the manifold. With the throttle body u have access to clean the manifold with needle nose pliers and a rag. I say alot of course words too when I work on those volkswagen but u did a fantastic job. Take care

    Just a heads up. If you don't know the engine code, just hold the button on the guage cluster. Hold it down for about 10 seconds and it'll tell you.
    Also the barcode sticker on the engine, normally passenger side, will tell you

    Used to have to go to the u-pick and grab a secondary air injection pump every year or so for a '98 Jetta. So much condensation would rust and seize the motor. Would pull the old one off the engine, pour out a pint of water, bolt the new one up, and head off to annual inspection.

    Well, Mr. O I am so thoroughly impressed with you. I think I have some of the same traits as you, I am also a non collage grad, yet i have had a pretty good career at a relatively big company, which you may know of, it's in Schenectady, although i have been in Lynn MA. I'm a mechanic at heart, love fixing things and cars and trucks are my favorite. Not my primary job but when I need to fix it I take it apart, so then I have no choice. Love it! With your Subaru rear suspension video, I got those bolts out, took a while, but if you could do it I could and did. I really don't want anyone working on my stuff, because no one can do it as good as me, possibly with one exception, SMA. As it is your business and livelihood, you definitely have the tools to do what is needed. Tip of the hat to you sir! When I grow up I want to be some one of your caliber. BTY I'm 58. I don't care what your fixing, I learn something. your on my bucket list. To shake your hand. Thank you for what you do, how you do it and with the integrity you do it with!

    I bought an Audi to fix up, I also bought the VCDS program from Ross Tech, best $99 I ever spent and made diagnosing these German cars VERY easy, once you learn the measuring blocks for each category it is a snap.

    Hey Eric there was an updated part for this the vw scan tool test plan is literally check voltage and ground at the sensor and if not within specified value it gets the new hose/ sensor dealio that goes from pump to intake manifold so this all seems perfect!

    I've been a 2003 Jetta owner for a whole year and I am no trained mechanic. But as I've worked on it, I've come to appreciate the amount of thought that goes into its parts.
    Except its plastic. The plastic is crummy.

      To start, I'll give a few examples.
      The ECM is located in the plenum. Not in the wheel well or against the fender or somewhere stupid like that.
      The ECM connector is made so that there is a sliding piece that pulls the contacts together and seals it in one go.
      Every pin lock inside electrical connectors use purple so the user knows what they're dealing with.
      The battery is easily accessible (again, not in the wheel well or trunk.
      ALL of the relays are in one location.
      And lastly, but most subjectively, I like the way the doors sound when they shut. They sound solid and heavy and not shallow or flimsy.

    VAG isn't too bad to work on, they just love their special tools, even for diagnostics.
    A Rosstech VCDS in the cabinet for these special occasions can save a lot of headache, well worth the ~$300. Though sometimes finding the right measuring block for the sensor you're looking for can take a bit of hunting and poking.

      I agree. Everyone at my shop hates working on VAG. Being a VW owner for the last 7 years I have gathered a lot of special tools and diag stuff which makes it a breeze and I can almost always beat book time on them unless they are having a really really super weird problem.

    Eric another good video. Like how you accepted the challenge and were as lost as most of us would of been. Thank you for showing us everything is not cut and dried. I know Scannerdanner recently did an air injection pump video and had lots of unknowns, but he had a friend Tommy who was a VW wiz and still had problems diagnosing the issue. Thank you for showing and I will stay away from VW's. Thanks for showing how you approach something you are completely unfamiliar with. ❤️

    Same motor I have, see not so hard!!! Your a brilliant technician!!! With great diagnostic abilities.VW are nice, just like all manufactures have there good and bad. Newer car are getting cheaper and it shows in how much plastic are in them! I do like German car for there ride. But they are money pits.

    I believe the deal is that aftermarket radios or integration kits will sometimes put full battery voltage onto the network, because the OE radio is on one of the networks. If the scan tool attempts to pull the network voltage to ground to communicate when it has full battery voltage on it without a resistor, it will smoke the scan tool. I don't know that it is still a thing, but it was back in the early/mid 2000s.
    Anyway, I know you've been doing this a while, probably about the same length of time as me, but as someone who has worked in shops that worked on anything that rolled in the door (including Euros, motorhomes, ambulances, etc) and also working for a German car specialist in the past, I want to give you a piece of advice. I totally respect your decision to work on European cars on a very limited basis. They all love special tools and they love to make getting info difficult/expensive (see the next paragraph). My advice is to not be afraid of the technology. The wording may be different but the cars all work the same way. Lots of them use the same parts. EVAP systems on BMWs and VW/Audi (before going to NVLD) was the exact same LDP as Chrysler used, with all the same common failures. Now a days, most domestic cars are built the same as German cars. They all pretty much use Bosch GDI. Many are turbocharged used turbos from the same suppliers the Germans use (Borg Warner) so the systems are designed the same way. Pretty much all domestic cars now use the same network communications layouts that Germans have been using for nearly a decade. So, if you are afraid of "German" technology or the way Germans build a car, you aren't going to be happy working on new Domestic cars either.
    Regarding the lack of info availability for pretty much any German car, they are exploiting a legal loophole. The right to repair act requires them to make repair information available to independent shops for a "reasonable" price. Rather than doing that by making their service manuals available to aftermarket publishers (alldata, motor, identifix, etc.) they make it part of their OE scan tool and make the scan tool available for use with a J2534 device. You subscribe to their service, download the software, scan the codes and it gives you diag info for those codes. Its called "Guided Fault Finding" and it is absolutely ridiculous because it has you testing the car the same way that old printed flow charts used to, complete with the old "substitute a known good part" line. It's another way the German's make their cars intentionally harder to work on for independents.

    I work on VWs everyday, they aren’t bad IF you work on them regularly. You can get the secondary air pump data stream on an Autel if you uses generic vw mode. Great Work Eric as always.

    Welcome to our world Eric , you need to get vcds lead and download program , I got mine from Australia ,also has obd2 on it too ,vw are one of the nice cars in Europe to work on , great video , your knowledge of systems helped you to get there , vcds , the one from total car diagnostics in Australia , 97 dollars including the extra 20 dollars (aus) for the upgraded system , Internet must be off when you are using it , allows you to do many things on vw group vehicles

    Growing up, I got experience rebuilding Lawn Boy two-strokes, Briggs four-strokes, a Kawasaki two-stroker, and then I turned 16 and bought a '68 Dodge Superbee which I worked on from time to time. All those engines made perfect sense to me. Then I sold the Superbee and bought a VW Rabbit GTI and it was as though it had been designed by aliens - none of it resembled anything I had ever worked on before.

      @@airratchetjockey7605 Did a heater core on an A4, took me 21 hours. Books at 20 hours. Dealer wanted almost $2000 for the core job, I bought the car for $500 from a guy, took a weekend to do the job, had a perfect A4 for $540.

    This is awesome watching you work your way in to this. I really have most of my experience working on Volkswagens and other European cars. When working on your average General Motors product or some fords I find myself as frustrated as you are in this video.

    as a mechanic myself I like the way you diagnose people always think the scan tool tells you what to replace but we know from experience that it is sometimes right unless you diagnose properly you can end up putting on a lot of expensive parts for no reason :) also did you look how many screws you have to undo to check the air filter I think from memory there's 8 or 9 :)

    Eric, the aftermarket radio thing has to do with the K-Line in the car and the fact cars prior to 97 didn't have k-line in the connector rather +12V "looped" on that same pin. These older harnesses will therefore reproduce this and short the k-line to +12V as "intended". However 97 and later cars had the K-line here. The car itself is not affected by connecting the k-line to +12V but when you plug in a scan tool it will short out its k-line output--boom! However this mainly affects only now-older VW/Audis, ones that are 97 to perhaps early 00s. More modern cars are using CAN bus only in the radio harness and most newer aftermarket harnesses (even on the older cars with k-line in the connector) the companies are also smart enough not to touch the k-line or connect it to anything (or have a loop the installer is supposed to cut on 97+ cars). This means it's a problem but fairly rare these days and probably not even possible on a MY11 car. Here's an old Ross-tech article on the matter:

    Launch works very well with vw’s. Also, there is an actuation for the blower. That tube with the sensor is prone to cracking. That’s what the builtin is for

    You should invest in "special" plier for those springy hose clamps. Ther is two verisions one on a wire (for tight spaces) and one "regular" plier.
    Have done like you and used the nearset plier and nerly got pinched several times.

    Hey Eric my brother has a 2014 Jetta that I'm forced to work on I saw that same Radio warning when i hooked up my Autel to it. The only thing that has broke so far was the High Beams had to pull the Steering wheel to replace the Multifunction Switch. Other than that the car is great.

      It helps to have people you can call sometimes. Better to make a call than waste a few hours for nothing. My buddy has access to most Euro crap info and he's a diesel wizard. He sends me TSB, service info, and wiring diagrams and I use my employee discount on parts he needs. He gets the better end of the deal finance wise but I don't own any vehicles that our parts dept deals with nor do I do side work so it benefits us both.

    My 08 VW Jetta 2.5L had the secondary air injection code. I found the plastic air hose cracked, leaking air while under pressure. It dried rotted while next to the cylinder head. Napa kit cost $103 for a plastic hose, but included a sensor I did not need.

    Won't mess with scan tool as long as you install the radio without connecting to steering wheel controls and using an alternate remote turn on line from the factory one. Hope this helps anyone testing or owning one of these cars

    To explain that VW aftermarket radio issue. There was a common mistake made when wiring an aftermarket radio on pre-CANBUS VWs. For some reason the adapter harnesses (which is just a standard Euro ISO connector that is also used with other brands) came with a power antenna wire on the pin that is supposed to be the K line, used for serial communication with the stock radio. The scan tool would momentarily ground that K line to initialize communication with the PCM. If that wire was incorrectly connected to an aftermarket harness, it burns up the scan tool since its trying to ground a wire that has 12v on it. As far as I know, it is no longer an issue with MY2002 and up vehicles.

    VW engine code/model is also often in the owners manual as a little sticker. Looks like someone found Eric a challenge! There is a website in Germany that has all the VW workshop manuals,schematics and wiring layouts for all VW's for something like 20 euro.

    G'day, Mr. O! I enjoyed the video! As you may know, when the PCM detects voltage or resistance that is outside the normal expected value range within the secondary air injection system air flow/pressure sensor circuit bank 1, code 'P2431' will be set and the check engine light may be illuminated.
    I was going to suggest... You could research the Technical Service Bulletins (TSB's) for the specific vehicle by year, model and power plant. In some circumstances, (as you know) this can save a lot of time in the long run by pointing you in the right direction. Based on the specific vehicle, this circuit may incorporate several components including "the secondary air injection pump, check valve, pressure sensor, air control valve and the PCM." Performing a thorough visual inspection to check the associated wiring for obvious defects such as scraping, rubbing, bare wires, or burn spots. Next is to check the connectors and connections for security, corrosion and damaged pins. Of course, this process would include all wiring connectors and connections to all components including the PCM. Confirm every component incorporated within the circuit which may include a fuse or a fuse-able link. The check valve should be tested to ensure that the airflow is in one direction only. Ice in the secondary air injection pump during extremely cold weather conditions is an indication of a defective one-way check valve allowing condensation from the exhaust to enter the pump.
    The reference voltage and the acceptable range based on the vehicle and the circuit configuration. This process identifies the absence of a power source or ground, continuity testing may be required to check the integrity of the wiring, connectors and other components. Continuity tests can be performed with the power removed from the circuit and the normal readings for wiring and connections should be 0 ohms of resistance. Resistance or no continuity is an indication of faulty wiring that is open, shorted or corroded and should be repaired or replaced.
    Common Mistake: Replacing the secondary air injection pump when a faulty one-way check valve or defective wiring is causing this code to be set by the PCM. Hopefully, the information has been helpful to point you in the right direction to correct the problem with the secondary air injection system air flow/pressure sensor circuit bank 1 fault code.       Well, regarding TSBs, 7:55. Regarding the rest of your suggestions, sure, these are all things someone with no other direction and a lot of spare time could do. But Eric is cleverly relentless in narrowing down his path and avoiding unnecessary detours (except as it adds to the informative nature of the video). In this case he combated lack of familiarity by applying eminently sensible reasoning to suspect that a sensor that runs on 5V would probably be designed to output near mid-supply voltage as a default (atmospheric pressure) value, and seeing the sensor did not, it was suspect, especially as that defect matches the reported code. And he was right about the voltage. So we'll see what happens in part 2, but I suspect his process turns out to have been pretty efficient.

    I spent 3 years working at an Audi dealer. You'll typically only get 70% of the way there on an Audi/VW diag. The rest is guess work. They do not give techs enough information. If you're lucky, ODIS (the factory scan tool) will have a good guided test for the fault code, but ODIS is often buggy, straight up incorrect, mistranslated from German, or still written in German. We had a 3 month stretch where it kept resetting the service interval to km instead of miles in the US due to a bug. Speaking of mistranslations, the service manual for the 3.0 engine showed a picture pre-tensioning the chains in the wrong direction on the left bank. Only screwed me over once.

    Like the new colors for video titles. European cars can be a bugger to work on. Had my own SAAB story, relied purely on public forums/media to fix anything. Which takes time to sift over and find relevant and consistent information.
    On the up side there are many passionate people working to create literature/content for upkeep and repairs for European cars. Once you find a good source it gets easier.

    I know you dont work with vw alot but you should get vag-com that's the scan tool vw uses it would make your life so much easier when working on them and it's not to Expensive....but for not workin on vw you did a great job love your videos

      Vag com is like 200-300, get the obd11 it's like 80-90 bucks and save thing just plugs in the port... But yep your right dude but I don't think he works on these at all or he would have one or know more.. Best way to learn... HANDS ON!! 🤔

      It's not the "official" tool, but many Dealers use it because it's BETTER than VW's own tool. My local Euro garage uses it also, personally VW's ODB is so weird, I agree, you HAVE to use one. www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/ (Plus Ross-Tech's support is quite good on finding information on the vehicle).

    I went through something similar at my shop. I diagnosed a failed secondary air pressure sensor on a VW and we ordered a new one from the dealer. It came in and fit/connected but the voltage was off (around 4v instead of 2.60-ish). Dealer swore it was the right part and sent another one... that was exactly the same. I ended up finding the correct part number myself and just ordered it that way instead of by application. I think they were sending MAP sensors.
