@HWilson for sure. I wouldn't mind if they were in a mod campaign where SHODAN returns and "reuses modified annalids" that serve her in this version of the story (which I think is a thing). Some of the models while really awesome (Rumbler, Assassin), feel sort of like seperate variant of that enemy rather than a higher fidelity version of that design. Could also work for stuff like the controversial HD midwife with the exposed boobs, as their use in this case would probably be different.

I was very young when it was released and played System Shock 2 and DeusEx after Bioshock series/DeusEx HR. Therefor it's not nostalgia, it's just peak gaming. SS2 is like living in Aliens the movie, but with a cyberpunk twist. It's amazing. Nothing but maybe Silent Hill 2 can hold a candle to its atmosphere. All the side stories, logs, feeling alone... SS2 was and still is THE game.

One of the most innovative things they did (which terribly frustrated a friend of mine) was that enemies would not spawn in the same place whenever you'd reload a save game. My friend was used to run into rooms and see where enemies where and on dying just reloading a save game and then have the pre-knowledge of where enemies would be in other games. Not so much in System Shock 2! Another thing they did was also have a limited set of resources available, so you'd really have to be careful with ammo, lock picks, upgrade points and repair kits as you couldn't apply them with impunity. I remember having to defeat three tech ninjas, which required armor penetrating rounds and I only had four of those. That was some tense game play I can tell you. Do it with a single round per ninja or back to the reload screen for another go. Little margin for error!

But don't forget having the ability to peek around corners while you were sneaking so you didn't just step out in front of a security camera fully exposed. I was never the best a games and still aren't. But I loved SS2 because it made you take your time and use your head instead of rushing into a unknown room willy-nilly. When you finally made it into a new unexplored sector you either took the utmost caution to get around or you died and had to reload. SS2 made you take your time and think while searching every nook & cranny. You also had to back-track to previously explored sectors if you put in the extra effort to research the body parts of previous killed enemies to find their weaknesses. Because not all of the chemicals were in one location. :)

It's on a new engine, so no it's not "just a mod pack". They ported it to a new engine and pack in mods that you can toggle on or off if you want. If they bring it to consoles then it will have native controller support as well. It's a huge undertaking to reverse engineer source code.

    • @arhum1224
      @arhum1224 Год назад +4

@@EmergencyChannel Yes it's running on the Kex Engine shell otherwise it wouldn't be possible to port to consoles easily + adding a seamless co-op system. What I meant is that the enhancements developed in-house other than obvious engine change are quite minimal while most of the heavy lifting are actually done by mods (which aren't enabled in the trailer; you can check PC Gamer article's screenshots to compare)
      These mods are:
      Vurt's Space Textures, Flora, Hi-res Water, Organics/Goo
      ACC's Four Hundred (400) Hi-res Terrain Textures
      Eldron's Psi Amp
      Olfred's Fixed Objects
      Grosnus' Hi-Res Spinning Marine/Navy/OSA logos
      SCP
      SHTUP
      ZylonBane's New Quest Notifier
Vaxquis Vintage Song Remake v1.0 Mod
      Mercurius' Tacticool Weapon Replacements
So yeah more than 50% of enhancement mod covered by freely available community mods. The Nightdive side of the enhancements are only:
New NPC/Enemy models, some weapon models (mods are also used for those)
Remade FMVs (I'm curious if they will change the ending)
      UI/Menus probably updated
      New co-op, VR.
While this is a nitpick on my part, I'm not sure if i should be happy that they are very likely going to charge full price for existing owners of SS2 for something that feels like a 50/50 job. Whereas their Quake, Turok, Doom 64, and Powerslave remasters have been excellent efforts top to bottom. But they're slowly starting to falter with shoddy remasters like Blade Runner, Blood Fresh Supply (Which was unfinished thanks to Atari).

As I look at both the classic version in the smaller window and the enhanced version on the main screen, the enhanced version looks fairly well. However I noticed a lot of that dark blue tone in the original missing a bit in the enhanced version. I hope that this might be inspected further since it is still in a work in progress. Anyways thanks again Nightdive!

One thing that would be a new and cool experience for me would be if I could play this on console. SS2 back in '99 was apparently on its way to Dreamcast but that got canceled. It'd be fun to play this at 4K on my PS5. Make it so?
EDIT: Looked at PC gamer article and, sweet! it is coming to console!

I also loved the first game in terms of atmosphere and story but the controls were so clunky that I didnt play it. So, I cant wait for the SS1 remake to drop. I really hope they will also make a remake of SS2.

Y'all made some changes to the OG system shock intro, and I think it worked out pretty well. I think one change that should be made to System Shock 2's intro is to cut the bit about SHODAN. We all know about SHODAN. But more importantly, cutting that improves the pacing of the intro, gives it a better cold open, and doesn't just scream "SHE WILL SHOW BACK UP AS A TWIST LATER IN THE STORY" from the word go.
I don't expect y'all to have the courage to go all the way with it and change the box art (though if you did that would actually be awesome), but maybe at least try letting the story twist work as a twist, even if we all know about it already
