Unfortunately psychiatric patients who refuse to accept that they are sick, don't want any help and leave their families are doomed to homelessness and all kinds of misery. Parents cannot do anything if these patients are grownups and are not dangerous enough to be involuntarily hospitalized. The system should be changed. People who are sick, run away from families and cannot cope with life on their own need to be collected from streets, sheltered and supervised. My brother is almost in the same situation. It was so hard to get SSDI in the US, and I'd been dysfunctional for so long, that I just gave up the idea of trying to work. I don't want to lose my drug coverage, because I don't want to be seriously ill again. I've wondered if it's safe to even start a RUclips channel, in case it makes a problem for me with my disability status. It would be so great if they just gave everybody Universal Basic Income and health insurance, without making you jump through hoops to prove disability. Then, if you could work in addition to the UBI, then not work if you couldn't deal with it, life would not be so grim for so many people. But they have poisoned people's minds about those kinds of benefits or that kind of economic system. They would rather guarantee that everyone is as scared and unhappy as possible.

Jeez, I thought this was the kind of thing you didn't have to deal with in Canada. I guess I was wrong. I'm sorry you have to deal with this and I hope you're able to continue getting the treatment you need without having to sacrifice your other basic needs. The government's handling of this both infuriates and amuses me. Even setting aside the moral aspect, does the government really think making you choose between severe, untreated mental illness and destitution is a social or economic net-win? Like, don't they understand how much a hospitalization would cost them? More than medication I would have to think.

You guys know that most manufacturer copay coupons aren’t a long term solution, right? They generally expire after around 3 months to a year, which puts a lot of people in a difficult situation when it runs out. These discounts can sometimes be renewed yearly, however pharmaceutical companies can stop extending these benefits at any time. Every copay coupon runs out eventually. If you’re on any government insurance program (Medicare, Medicaid), or don’t have an insurance plan, you aren’t eligible for these coupons at all. These copay promotions are not designed to help the poor or uninsured. Instead, they are designed to encourage insured patients to bypass less-expensive drugs (which typically have lower copays) when multiple options are on the formulary, raising the cost of drug coverage. When that discount runs out, it’s the patient that’s screwed - using these coupons puts an increasingly large burden on insurance companies, and at some point they’ll start charging you higher premiums and copays as an incentive to try and get you to switch to a generic version of your brand name (coupon-covered) drug. It’s also important to not that pharmaceutical companies actually PROFIT from these coupons/promotions in the long run, getting 6:1 return on their ‘investment’ every year. Big pharma is NOT your friend, if you are deceived into believing this you will pay for it eventually. They thrive off of preying upon the most vulnerable. The burden of being forced into paying these increased costs has lead to some insurers banning the use of coupons for a number of specialty brand name drugs. This isn’t to say that the rest of the healthcare system (and government policy) isn’t to blame, but big pharma basically controls the whole healthcare industry.

I live in the U.S, but there is an issue with medical companies profiting off of those who have chronic/terminal illnesses in many other countries too. I hope that things end up working out for you, thank you for sharing your experience for the rest of us too.

No, you should not stop taking your meds. Your psychiatric meds are essential to your well being. Hearing your story reminds me that I’m blessed to have my multiple sclerosis injectable covered by my husband’s insurance. Otherwise it’s about $2,400 a month! He’s looking to retire in about a year snd we are talking about health and medication coverage. Here in the US, many of us take it for granted. Here we have NAMI National Association for Mental Illness. I’m not sure if it would be a resource for you in Canada. I suggest contacting the drug manufacturers to see if grants are available for you. Thank you for sharing your story and taking us along on your beautiful journey.

Hi Lauren. I work in disability insurance here in Quebec. I'm so sorry to see hear this. Thank you for making this video, it's incredibly eye opening. While I'm not at the level where these kinds of decisions are made (I am in direct contact with claimants, I work with people who a permanently disabled who apply to CPP), this is giving me a whole other perspective into what people on disability go through. I see on the daily how disheartening it is - having to deal with a debilitating illness AND with the whole disability system. I'm so sorry about this.

Adding to this as I am also in law school - Try getting in touch with a lawyer (you're probably eligible for free legal aid). Lawyers who specialize in disability claims can advocate for you and are an added pressure on your insurance company.

Please turn the adds on on your videos, as another source of income. I'm sure many of us wouldn't mind, especially knowing it finances your meds.
Keep on fighting for the financial support you need. Getting the medication you need should not be a privilege but a right.

Thankfully here in Australia most medicines are subsidised by the Government Pharmacetical Benefits Scheme (PBS). It is a shame to realise not every developed country has such a scheme, but I believe it is in everyone's interest for medicine to be subsidised. People do not choose to be unwell! I might add that it would cost most people less than $500 AUD per year for these kinds of medications.

Oh God, this enrages me. Please do not go off your meds, you seem to thrive when you’re on them. Please try having your doctor write a letter to the disability program and advocate for you. At least to get partial coverage. I had to do this with one of my meds and eventually insurance decided to pay half the cost of it.

My grandmother called my disability insurance and straightened it out but she found out the medicine actually cost $2,300 a month. Without the insurance. Antipsychotics are actually the most expensive medication prescribed by psychiatrist. They are the money makers.

I was luckily able to get on the Sask Gov’t drug plan which helps but it’s based on your income (and again, isn’t always reasonable like you mentioned) however it’s been affordable so far since my work is a small family owned business and no benefits. I suffer with Bipolar 1 disorder so I too take medications for life. There just isn’t enough help for people. Thank you SO MUCH for making this video and bringing this very real and very concerning and serious problem to light! Medication is expensive. I tried signing up for Blue Cross but if you sign up for individual benefits, they purposely won’t cover your medication since you have a pre-existing condition. So I didn’t sign up with them or anyone. That made me so mad.

Please don’t stop taking your medications!! You are doing so well! They are so worth it for you! Maybe also people on here who are struggling with this issue can pick up an extra side job or as some people mentioned below, there are many ways to get discounts on prescriptions. Some people even use online ordering companies or use the generic form of the medication. Also, there is something called GoodRx in the US that provides discounts on prescriptions. It’s an App. It also tells you which pharmacies sell it the cheapest. For example, in the US, some supermarkets sell cheaper than CVS because CVS is now owned by the insurance company Aetna. So the prices are higher. I also hope that for you in particular that some Patrons can help you with your page too. I will once I earn some more money. Your content is SO valuable for so many.
I know that you are probably putting out this video too to show the struggle that every day people face when making these economic decisions, but please all of you who need these medications, put your health first because you can’t help anyone else if you don’t put your health first!
God bless you all! Am praying for you all! Thanks for such awesome content on this channel! 🙏

Strangely enough, today, I just happened to be alerted about some meds that will no longer be covered by my medicare program. I have schizo-effective and fibromyalgia so I deal with both the physical and mental sides of things and I live in the US. I looked it up and last year my drug costs, ytd, were $102, 000!!! I can't even imagine what would happen to me if I weren't able to access my schizophrenia and pain meds via medicare/medicaid coverage plans. There were many times in the last few years that, had it not been for family, I would have ended up homeless and no doubt without the help I need to access these programs to get the meds I need to keep me stable enough to live a life. I shudder to think what people without the kind of support system I have must go through.

I, myself, have decided never to get married because of the potential loss of medical coverage I need for my permanent mental illness. I'm grateful to have government housing because trying to survive on the monthly disability income without it is close to impossible, Unfortunately, I cannot take my medications because the system has worked against me taking them regularly safely and dropping off medication suddenly just made me suicidal. That aside, being on a disability support pension restrictions you to working a maximum of 15 hours a week or they start penalising your entitlements or can cut them off all together and same as you Lauren you effectively lose your coverage for medication altogether. Here in the UK my medication (quetiapine/seroquel) costs about £10 per month ($17 canadian). The more recently produced drugs do cost more. I was put on Paliperidone tablets some years back because of liver issues, which cost £100 per month ($170 canadian), but my General Practicioner Doctor refused to fund that drug, because the local Health Body overseeing funding of GP's drug costs said it was too much to justify. There is little private funding of healthcare in the UK, and as a result we have to made do with the cheapest options, with no choice given us for better drugs that have been developed recently. Costs are low, but the access to better drugs is very restricted, so we have to accept drugs that are not fit for our needs, and which produce more side effects, and ultimately shorten our lives by 15 years due to comorbidity factors.

My brother-in-law is very ill with schizoaffective disorder, in Scotland we're super lucky he pays zero for healthcare, I'm shocked this is the situation in Canada 💔 I hope you find a way around this.

Sorry to hear this. I don't know what I'd do if I got cut off meds for payment

Oh wow, what timing. I just paid almost $600 for a portion of my meds. I have about two months where I will have no drug coverage, because I hit my max and my husband just started a new job. I'm in Alberta, Canada.

Call up your insurance and present the issue and every reason why you need your benefits. You can take care of your personal health which helps, but some of us need a daily pill to see the world in a clear state of mind. Some may call it altered or unnecessary, but they have yet to experience such a time when their world is shaped by paranoid thoughts when the anxiety kicks in and the worse that can happen after. It just had me thinking about managing my own anxiety through therapy and if need be a pill for it since I more than once witnessed my breakdowns inflict damage. Also that nocturnal eurinesis video spoke to me since it’s undermined in the health industry and yet people with the issue grow up a certain way that is not healthy if feeling of indifference surface.

Hi! Thank you for your hard work. I live in Russia. And I also suffer from schizoaffective disorder. I spend $ 55 a month on medicines, 30 tablets in a package, and this is expensive for our country. I used to take pills for $ 7, but they had severe side effects, I gained 40 kilograms of weight. The weight does not grow on the new drug. I feel good. But they are not issued under the disability program, they are simply not on the lists, and therefore I buy them myself. This medicine came from America. In our country, a good salary is considered if a person receives more than $ 500 per month. But we live in different countries. You really have a very large amount of money going to medicines. It's a pity that you lost your support. Please keep fighting! And do not give up treatment, it may be better to choose other medicines with a lower price. But they are needed! Good health to you !! good luck!
