For me, we've tried coming off my meds several times thinking that it was the answer or the ideal place for myself and my mental health so I could live happily. I have done crazy, unreasonable things off my meds. I was very much a danger to myself and others. Having said that, I knew that I absolutely needed to be on my medications, likely, for the rest of my life and I have come to terms with it. I've suffered from Schizoaffective Disorder since 2011, so roughly 13 years. I don't know if the length of time matters, but it was through those years that taught me medications are actually useful and might even be my superpower in this life of mine. I cannot explain what it is I feel, but God or a higher power played a huge role in my recovery more than every therapist or doctor I've consulted. Through prayer, I find strength, hope, and guidance. The religion I fell in to is completely self-directed. I'm not trying to convince you to become religious, but it is just what I fell into in my recovery. Hopefully you won't mind if I say a prayer for you, but I will ask for His blessing for you anyway.

The reason you cannot stop taking psychiatric drugs, and why you become rather unstable, to put it lightly, is due to the morphological/structural effects these drugs have on neurons or brain cells themselves. They fundamentally alter the brain's structure and function. When you attempt to stop taking the drugs, you experience a hyper-dysfunctional state caused by the adaptive pressure from the antagonistic effects of the drugs. This state can often be permanent. Psychiatrists sometimes because of lack of knowledge, might convince themself and you into believing that your illness is returning rather than acknowledging the brain damage and alteration caused by the drugs themselves.
The reality is that it is possible to discontinue these drugs. However, very few psychiatrists in the developed world possess an understanding of these drugs and their ability to alter brain cell function. Further they don't really want you to get of the drugs, and they in generally do not possess any knowledge about it. However there are dedicated forums for withdrawing from these drugs, and I urge you to visit them.
The current paradigm suggests tapering off the very slowly over a much longer period that is currently being done, ideally only having one drug in the system and following a hyperbolic taper. Sadly, this involves creating your own dosages as you gradually reduce your intake, as there does not exists dosage on the lower end of the spectrum to safely taper.Unfortunately, this process is challenging for many patients.
I am sorry to be the bearer of hard though facts
Anyway there are a couple of site out there that can help you taper of these drugs, and they actually know what they are doing, one is "survivingantidepressants", they have a massive track record of getting people of these drugs, not just antidepressants even tho the name suggests it, and some others. I will link two of them below. As well as information on hyperbolic tapering.

When withdrawing from SSRIs, I discovered that these drugs have an antihistamine effect; withdrawal resulted in a histamine overload, which caused intense body aches and brain fog. I learned from a patient forum that many people take up to a year to taper. I ended up doing this, focusing on reductions of no more than 10% at a time. This needs to continue even when you drop below the lowest dose available in a pill. I used a compounding pharmacy to produce liquid preparations that allowed dosing to a precision of a fraction of a milligram. It was frustrating to take so long to withdraw, but this method worked to get me off the meds with no withdrawal effects. It might not take that long with your medication, but accepting that it might take a lot longer than you want it to can be liberating once you accept it.

I hope my son can get this help. He is currently over medicated. He’s heavily sedated. I am upset that a medical doctor told him he could get off the antipsychotic in 4 weeks. He had SEVERE withdrawal, was put in the hospital. The hospitals here will not even consider the withdrawal! They only diagnose him more and put him on more medications. He sleeps most his days away. It’s very sad. Now he has more meds to reduce- it should thourouly be discussed before starting any psychiatric medication- the dependency and withdrawal. And now I only take a couple things, with almost no major side-effects. I've made it a rule to ask the doctor AND therapist what their qualifications are, and demand that they explain exactly what type of meds or therapy they will be using. It was a long process, but I found the right combo and live a pretty normal life except for a short episode here and there. Main thing I learned was ask doctors and therapist everything you can possibly want to know, BEFORE proceeding. Best of luck. My prayers for you and your son 😊😊

Liquid tapers are the best for most patients from compounding pharmacy's so you can play with the dose and adjust it according to the severity of withdrawal symptoms. it can take some months to years to taper particular meds one at a time, and it is very daunting. but very possible and you guys will be glad you did. When I was put on benzodiazepines and they had the opposite effect to the intended, and were VERY strongly addictive, I tapered down by keeping timings the same but reducing dose by 10% every 3 days.
I did this by putting the pill in tinfoil, hitting with a hammer, then spreading the powder flat and 'cutting' away about 10% with the back edge of a knife. I didn't waste any, but kept the 10% in the foil and used it with the appropriate % of the next day's pill. Seemed to work, thankfully.
Got me off them in about 3 weeks, whereas I couldn't cope with missing even one pill at the start of that.

I responded well to a treatment and didn't feel like I needed to continue the pain medicine. My pain specialist said I couldn't just stop taking it and to see how I did over the next month. I took just enough to not have diarrhea and I ended up taking tiny fractions of little pieces and at the end of that month, I was free. No most itching and no more constipation. The sand paper thing would have been more practical. Even crushing the pills with a scale would have been more consistent. It worked but I think this is a more controlled way to deal with weaning.

I learned by Robert Whitaker that anti-psychotic medications block dopamine receptors. Brain compensates by creating some more. When you withdraw from medication and unblock receptors you then have oversupply of receptors. So this may result in a brain that is super sensitive to psychosis.
Hopefully the brain can restabilise itself in time. Slow taper and withdrawal aids this stabilisation process.

SSRI withdrawal can also induce depression, even in people who didn't have depression before the SSRI is given!
I was told by my doctor to halve my dose of SSRIs and then after two weeks go to 0mg, and that first reduction thrust me into withdrawal. After researching the dangers of going into withdrawal, I re-instated at my full dose and then tapered down slowly over a full year, getting liquid compounds to be able to take specific doses that aren't normally prescribed. I'm working with my psychiatrist to taper because Nicole said maybe I haven't yet realized the full benefits of the keto diet because of the effects of the medicine I'm on. I am going down by .1mg a week (compounding pharmacy) but starting from 5mg. So far no withdrawal symptoms so maybe you can do compounding. So relatable how you want to get off the medication and I hope your withdrawal stops!!! Feel better soon and yes, push through for hopefully the best asap!

I had commented on one of your keto updates videos that I wanted to see if doing keto would help with my depression disorder. I did not start medical keto but I did make a MASSIVE change in my diet by just eating more veggies and fruits. Making this simple change to my diet has alleviated some of my more onerous symptoms and gotten rid of some of the lesser ones. I have gained a little weight due to the carbs I take(3lbs) but nothing that I feel uncomfortable with or made me go out and buy larger clothes.
That said, watching your videos on this and my experience with just eating better has really given me hope that I can seriously reduce my meds. I doubt that I can completely go off meds but if I can reduce the amounts of some and eliminate others, then I will see it as a complete victory.
Thank you so very much for sharing your journey with mental health and nutrition. This has been truly the light in the tunnel I needed. Your honesty and your willingness to put it all out there has been a tremendous gift and a source of comfort at times. Even though I don't struggle with the same types of mental health issues that you do, mental health struggles are struggles none the less. Finding the right meds that work, dealing with over medication or under medication, the cost associated with treating mental health, the social aspects of navigating mental health, ect.
By you sharing your life and your brain with us, I truly have hope, for the first time in 40 plus years, that I can have a life that I want and that is MASSIVE. Thank you!!!

Frustrating when meds don't work. Latuda was amazing for me - except for the Tardive Dyskinesia. Unfortunately I'm too sensitive to all atypicals. I'm bipolar. I have to be very careful of my diet - eat healthy. Down to only Serequel and Topamax. But my life is stress free too. (As stress free as possible, lol). That is a game changer.
Keep doing what you're doing. You're your own best advocate. Only you know your body. 🥰

I reduce my medications by 2% to 5% every 3 to 4 weeks or longer till I reach a period of stability.
Reducing by a third sounds way too much. Would be for me.
    The principle I follow is:
The longer I take to lower dose of drug and allow my brain time to restabilise itself as I withdraw from it, the greater the likelihood my brain will survive well off the drug in the long run due to being in a more stable state.
Withdrawing from the drug too quickly can increase your risk for relapse when you get off the drug. By not allowing the brain time to restabilise itself as you withdraw from it. It will be in a more unstable state when you stop drug.

Amazing Lauren that you are coping so well considering the effects of withdrawal. I went through that recently during a hospital admission where I was in the ER for the weekend for medical reasons and they wouldn't allow me any of my psychiatric medications until Monday after the pharmacist came in a okayed the meds. It was ridiculous. I was there from Saturday afternoon until Monday morning at 11 without any psychiatric meds. I had the worst headache of my life and, of course, nausea . It made my physical health seem worse than it was. And they kept me for another 3 days after that. I didn't home until Wednesday. I did have some serious medical issues. But I don't think it was right to deny me my meds. They were giving me my diabetes meds. I don't get it. It's like the hospital doesn't know anything about withdrawal. It's a real thing. Do doctors not know about this? Otherwise, you'd think we'd be warned when starting psychiatric meds that there are withdrawal issues. I am not sure that doctors are aware. If they are, they aren't aware of the severity. Or they'd make sure people get their meds when in the ER. I sincerely wish you all the best with the metabolic therapies. If I were younger, I'd give it a shot. At my age, it's too drastic, a change, and too much for my energy level. I couldn't cook to that extent. I think you and your family are so awesome. What a wonderful bunch you are. I wish you every success.

I feel it is extremely important for those who take psychiatric medications and who have other medical conditions to never experiment with medication dosages and diet due to other medical conditions can be affected in a bad way especially like with this person's dive into a ketogenic diet. A ketogenic diet and diabetes and psychiatric meds are not to be played with as doing so is dangerous. If one has a true psychological diagnosis and is on psychiatric medication the medication is what treats the affliction and that is that. Tapering psychological medication just because one wants to find a miracle cure to overcome a chemical disorder or to get off meds to become feeling normal is not wise. Keeping a close relationship with treating psychological therapist and psychologists and other psychological physicians who are actively treating and prescribing the meds is what one needs to stick with. Psychological illnesses are very serious and noone should be told or encouraged to in any way go off or taper prescribed therapies. The risk is dangerous on the brain and can even cause an enormous amount of stress on the persons health. I myself take medications as prescribed and they are taken in the day and at night and their actions do their job by sometimes sedating for a reason. The brain needs to rest in order to stop symptoms and to allow the body and the rest of the persons mind to level out. Personally I do not want people to have a false sense of being "cured" by using a diet and tapering off life saving medications at least this is my opinion and I would never want to go off the medication that have saved my life for 31 years. Schizophrenia is a terrible disease and it is even worse than terrible to experience unmedicated. I myself have diabetes and mental illness and the two being treated by medication work fine for me and my general diabetic diet has controlled my blood sugar to excellent levels along with the prescribed regimen I am on. I do not in my life support tampering with the body system by using a restrictive diet in order to treat mental illness. I wish no ill to anyone who wants to do that kind of thin I just hope that they do not believe that they can cure their serious mental illness.
Schizophrenia bears a heavy weight on those who experience it and it can effectively be treated by medication that the brain needs to survive all the hits that the disease throws out at us at every moment we breathe. Please use extreme caution if trying a diet and tapering off meds as there are no scientific proof that a diet can treat serious mental illness.
Anything that is written is not conclusive to treat one and cure them of these mental afflictions.
    Sincerely,

    • @argusfleibeit1165
      @argusfleibeit1165 Месяц назад

I agree. There is also the fact that you can lose the capacity to be stabilized again, should you need to go back on meds. My opinion is, once you find a good med regimen, stay on it unless and until it stops working. Because then you have to start again searching for the next drugs that work for you. Our brains are different, we are lucky meds work. Going off of them is a fool's errand, especially trying to depend on some fad diet.

Even for folk who don't find ketosis itself helpful, the removal of sucrose (sugar), lactose (in dairy), and gluten (in flour), will itself remove 3 possible allergens/intolerances and energy spikes/dips/addictions, that probably affect many people.
Removing carbohydrates must alter gut bacteria too. Which maybe helps.

I know the feeling. Again, I'll reiterate what she said, different drugs work differently on different people. I've been having a love/hate relationship with quetiapine. I started with 100mg years ago, but now I need 500mg to keep my mental condition in check but I'm also dealing with an increased intensity of side effects. My point with this is to not be afraid of asking "Doc, I feel the benefits of this drug, that I've been taking for years, are being outweighed by the side effects. Is there something else we can try?"
Sadly in mental health, usually, there isn't a single drug for a condition, but a combination of them in different dosages and it sucks because it takes a couple of weeks to feel the full effect of a medication scheme.
Voice your concerns, be honest about side effects, even if you think they're small. What I meant with this comment is for you to avoid what I'm currently going through, because I was stupid and didn't voice my concern when it was just a nuisance instead of a worry.
Stay strong and you're not alone, there are many of us and even if I don't even know your name, I wish you the best.

This was a really great video! I have schizophrenia and I'm wanting to lower my meds and be on the least medication possible. I have been on 600 mg of seroquel for nearly 4 years and I'm ready to lower. It's really hard whenyour brain is so dependent on these meds. I wish you the best! God bless ❤

my withdrawal sympoms from lexapro were 100x worse than the depression ever was in the first place. my dad did the withdrawal but took a year to do it, and slowly slowly wins the race, but he wasn't on keto. and he did go on buspar for the anxiety afterward, but not back on the lexapro. you are right that it's different for each person and in conjunction with psychiatrist is the key - I didn't do it that way - and the last 20% of it was the part that broke me. it's okay if you take a break from making videos at that crucial part. we will understand.

Lauren, you amaze me. I'm learning a lot from you. Yes, certain foods are good brain foods. Time is the best element for tapering off from meds. It'll take time. I'm on your side. Lauren, much 🤗 from me to you and Rob. Please be careful.

Dear Lauren I am so happy this is working so well for you and fully supportive of your journey, sending you much Love and Light, also in this difficult phase of transition with the meds, maybe my uncalled for suggestion would be to take more time before you taper off more, if you can, it's not a race right? your body needs its own time to process all the changes. As for me, I stopped trying with keto for the major depression, it really was not working for me, in spite of doing it to a T for months. But I am still off starchy carbs and grains etc. Just eating more intuitively for what feels right with my body, which for me is more healthy low glycemic veggies, and proteins and doing intermittent fasting. Still going to keep learnina about it, of course follow your journey, keep exploring and experimenting but changing route yet again I think it is SO important to net get trapped into some kind of fanatism of any kind of eating/health regimen, our bodies are different, age, story, possible disease issues, etc. it really is not one size fits all. Wishing wholesome healing to you, your family and to all who follow.

When my doctor took me off my anti-psychotic meds due to tardive dyskinesia, it took about 5 months for me to feel so awful that I was put back on my meds on a lower level. I felt a lot of the same symptoms you're experiencing. My mind was fuzzy and it affected my daily life. Felt like I was walking through a fog. But when put back on my meds, I bounced back. I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for the update, Lauren! Might I suggest to continue drinking coffee for the time being; caffeine withdrawals for me were worse than those from antipsychotics and antidepressants. Glad you are doing well and keep soldiering through :) You got this! ❤
