As a therapist working with people with schizophrenia for over 30 years, I have found your points to be very true.Only once have I met a person whose voices told him jokes which he enjoyed.
i'm not schizo-phrenic ,i had labels veering around it a few times and of it, but i feel intrinsically that i'm not. 'scuse the waffling on, but i wanted to say that i've heard this. a comment i left above tells how i usually hear (if at all, it's usually too loud ,very intrusive thoughts.) them in the third party so i heard them, in a pub and knew which pub even though i had not been in years (for example , intrusive thoughts, telling me right now it's "not safe" to post this. it is exhausting.) to there, and telling a joke. sometimes i wake up laughing, in the dream and it overlaps. i do not take sleeping meds well, over the counter (diphenhydramine). recently i have began to sleepwalk and it is half lucid dream half "parasomnia" - that's right isn't it? - a mix of them, in the dream i needed to get something so i got out of bed opened a packet laid them out on a saucer and then, came to, was too tired to understand wtf so i just , flopped back into bed and slept. sorry to ask such questions when i am guessing places such as this, well, it's your "off" time and don't want to be plagued. but if you have the time could you please perhaps tell me your idea of what that was, the being asleep but doing something. either way good vibes .
@Caramel Cupcake ever see that movie parenthood? were Keanu reeves tells whats her name that you need a license for everything, drive a car, catch fish, own a gun, but any asshole can be a dad, not be any means saying this is any cause of mental health problems but just at the base of things we as a society don't even force parents to do their job so how the hell can we expect to be able to help people with mental illness.
I read on reddit where a guy with schizophrenia had taken the shamanic attitude towards the voices. They shifted drastically and went from extremely negative to joking and fun. He described them as going from evil spirits to spirit guides or like a joking sibling-like relationship.
@@joeking433 i cannot say for sure, but maybe because they were glad he did something non Christian, hence they were happy. But at the same time atheist have negative voices also
I really wish things were different for my nephew and he held on a little longer. He lost his battle with schizophrenia 8/18/20. He would let me in on the nasty things he was dealing with constantly in his head; it was an emotional nightmare for me; the last 6 months of his life I was by his side until he died. I miss him so much. He's forever 21.
@@ellagarnica8895 He was on medication and he was 21 years old. Hard to get an adult to adhere to things, plus he wasn't living with me. You might want to direct these questions to his mother as I have plenty of my own.
I really appreciate that you both share studies and your own experience and how careful you are to say "these are investigations" "these are my speculations"
I was diagnosed schizophrenic 30 years ago. Over the years, I have realised that my negative voices (always in the "You" form) are me talking to myself. The more anxious or angry I am feeling, the more fearful or nasty these voices become. So I do some deep belly breathing, and either journal about my paranoia/anger or divert my attention to fun, happy, calming activities, or do both. Getting out amongst people, even if it's going shopping or going to a popular park with lots of dogs (I love dogs!) is a great mood enhancer. I hope this helps.
This is very insightful. One of the tasks a brain supposed to do for us is interpret whether something is coming from within us (like sounds we make or thoughts we have) or from outside of us (like sounds from our surroundings or other people talking). For people with schizophrenia, this process isn’t working correctly, and the person’s own voice or thoughts can be seem to be coming from an *outside* source. So like if someone is worried their boss is criticizing them, they might imagine that happening… and then boom. They “hear” their boss criticizing them.
Yes my heart goes out to the commenters who are dealing with these symptoms. And I think society is moving toward understanding people who suffer from schizophrenia- thanks to videos like this.
the more you listen to the voices, the more you focus on them, the more you react with fear the worse they get - they seem to me to be putting me to the test 24/7 - hope you all are well and do not let anything get you down
This technique helps to turn off voices. Not been fully. But you can rest from it whenever you want.
Technique of meditation. Close your eyes and try to see all the muscle tensions in your body that deprive you of a comfortable state. Pay special attention to the muscles of the face and head. And then, not paying attention to these muscle tensions, you should try to achieve a comfortable state. You can get comfortable condition with a lot of muscle tension. People often do not notice this strong muscle tension and unconsciously support it. This tension may be so strong that your efforts will not be enough to remove it. But your efforts should be directed not to maintain tensions but to remove them.
To do this, you only need to focus on the state of internal comfort. If you notice that the internal tension as it pulls attention to yourself, try to focus attention on this place, and then as if to get out from under this concentration of attention. This can be called the technique of scattered attention.
Then this thing can happen - you concentrate on some place, you can relax the muscles, but the tension has changed the configuration and went to another place. You track tensions again and you leave from it again and it goes to another place again. So you can meditate as much as you want. If you succeed, then there is a certain pleasure in it. It is better to do it at night, but you can do it at any time. You can anywhere at least for a moment to close your eyes and instantly disconnect. In depression, do not orient on the emotional color of the feeling, but only on its strength. Well, that is the reason for depression can be anything and feelings can be different. But the feelings should be ignored as if they were not. schiza.net
@Miranda McKennitt there are many forms of meditation, friend. Walking/dancing meditation might be effective for you, or any movement based. Also kundalini yoga, which involves strenuous exercises known as "kriyas," often combined with chants or mantras. And by "effective" I don't mean "makes the voices go away," I mean "makes you a stronger person so you can deal with the voices more easily." Meditation practices don't make our problems disappear- that is a misconception. They simply give us tools and techniques we can use to overcome our obstacles with more ease.
@Miranda McKennitt I wonder how drugs distinguish the necessary neural connections from unnecessary ones. I think that if this were the case, all your thoughts would fade away.
@Miranda McKennitt This technique is too simple, anyone can try to use it. And it perfectly removes a person from the zone of discomfort to the zone of comfort. And a comfortable state indicates that the internal energy balance has been achieved.
@@dianeaishamonday9125 Meditative practices are necessary in order to teach a person to go to his comfortable state. Any meditation practice is aimed at working with the internal energy of a person.
Thanks for what you do! I do not have schizophrenia, but I was raised in an extremely religious community and therefore believed, as a child, that many physical and mental illnesses (especially things like psychosis and disassociative states) were caused by demon possession. Therefore mental illnesses were terrifying to me for a long time, even after I learned better. I've been trying to tear down the stigma in my mind so that I can fear less and understand more. :)
Katheryn, I also thought the same thing and am struggling to try to understand the scientific /medical point of view as my teenager daughter is battling the voices in her head.
It is. The voices are negative because they are demons. There’s no human cure for this, and the drugs that the doctors prescribe makes the person’s brain worse. Our brains are like antennas. It detects outside energies. There are good and bad spirits that lives insides our bodies- we are vessels. They are our conscience, and our demons- they make us think, say and do bad things. Some people experience the spirits talking to them because it’s part of their life karma, some experience this to lead the soul into a darker path, some experience this as a gift - enlightenment, depending on the voices that they hear. Resist the urge to let the negative voices make you do bad things.
@@jerrym.3083 you are so right .. people including thoughts about religion on this topic is way off though. demonic energies don't have anything to do with anyone's religion. they just are. to learn more about how psy chiatry has lied to everyone about this ailment in order to sell drugs, look up Jerry Marzinski and Sherry Swinney and their That's a Lie program. it's much better to make these entities go away and leave you alone than to allow your brain to be shrunken and damaged by the drugs psy chiatry gets you addicted to.
My husband has schizophrenia and the Lord has made a huge difference in his life and symptoms. The way he can find reassurance and strength through his worries even after being delivered from those spirits it still doesn't stop his symptoms completely aka hallucinations, delusions and the voices. The medication has helped him immensely but still doesn't remove his symptoms completely. So I don't know what you mean by being healed completely through religion.
I'm not schizophrenic but I find this information fascinating, especially the idea that treating the symptoms/voices with medication may increase the suggestion of something being wrong, thus worsening those symptoms. After studying chronic pain patients for many years, there seems to be a similar issue with chronic pain. Perspective matters, and culture goes a long way in forming perspective.
@@Catlily5 If they helped, would they be forced on people against their will to their detriment? One reason for the difference between the 1930's and 1980's patients could be because of who was hospitalized in the 1930's versus the 1980's (if that study is in the USA). In the 1930's they hospitalized anybody with mental illness. By the 1980's someone would have to be a danger to themselves or others to be hospitalized. This means the 1980's patients would be more likely to hear "destructive" voices because people with calmer voices wouldn't be hospitalized. This might explain the difference.
It’s also important to understand that diagnosis and treatment of any kind for mental health issues was largely and sometimes still is largely a white, wealthy privilege in the United States.
being in a healthy and happy environment really helps me, been voices free for over 2 years. now it's just the unrealistic anxiety to deal with but I cope by keeping my home organized and nice smells soothe me.
It seems like most mental illness are easier to cope with when the person has acceptance and a positive or neutral outlook on symptoms. The stigma (internally and externally) is probably the biggest variable for coping with said mental illness (just my theory besides medicine and therapy). Thank you for sharing all of this! I was in DBT group for a year. People had a variety of mental illnesses like; MD, BP, BBD, PTSD,GAD, and maybe schizoaffective disorder's (but no one mentioned them). By the end of the year, everyone who had more self compassion noticed a huge drop in distressing symptoms. It was a closed small group so we were pretty open with one another. I wish there were more mental health communities so everyone could have a place where they feel understood and accepted!
It definitely is a help to be informed. Mistakingly taking drugs and not knowing you're prone to schizoaffective disorders is a nightmare. My hallucinations have become more manageable recently after forcing myself to catch cues and triggers, but the types of things the voices would say are awful. These sorts of videos are necessary and lifesavers.
My voice come when I'm stressed, so very frequently. However they sound like someone trying to invade my home. Yet sometimes they just sound like people around my house, like boys playing football or like my neighbours are right beside me and I can hear their conversation. I also have frightening ones where I'm being visited by people who scare me like enemies or scary people I've met in my life. I mostly however suffer from delusions and I think that this is the hardest part of my schizo affective disorder. I can know that the delusions aren't true yet still believe them. Idk how to explain it well. I still feel as if I'm gonna die, someone is always trying to kill me, my friends are robots it aliens and I'm living in a simulation. I believe people are constantly trying to control my thoughts and most days they succeed because I'm often depressed. I constant believe that the government is trying to get me to kill myself or they will kill me, like they want me to live in fear. It's difficult, I have no one who understands. I am a recluse most times, my friends don't understand and I can't force them to, so I feel alone. I don't even feel real most times, I need help but don't know if the help is actually helpful. This was a rant. I'm grateful for your channel. Without this channel, I'd probably killed myself a year ago.
@@justinestephonie4606 I can't offer much advice but just know I'm sorry for what your going through and I hope things get a little bit better/easier for you. Thinking of you
I understand. Some of what you said has been my own experience aswell with the voices and delusions. I wonder if a Facebook group of others who go through this stuff will help be supportive for you?
I'm from South Africa and attend university, and one of the guest lecturers I had was an author and activist who also happened to be a spiritual healer. She spoke openly about the voices she hears, and how they both enrich her life but at times make her overwhelmed. She didn't see the voices as inherently negative, but rather a way in which her mind happens to work. I wonder if this acceptance of the hallucinations makes her, and thus also the voices, more 'at ease', lessening the negativity. This is just pure speculation.
I've always gotten positive loving guiding voices. They've been loving and helping me since I was a little one, and suffering harm from my parents. So interesting. I'm introverted... I feel like they are the reason I have love in my heart. My family was extremely harmful and unsafe. They pick me up when I'm at my worst. And just teach me things like don't make choices when I'm feeling terrible, that all people are equal, and especially give me the feeling of love and healing. Is this a form of Schizophrenia? 😅
The voices aren't constant but they've been there from early on, and would reject my parents misbehavior, narrating and trying to comfort me. They were very patient. They also prevented me from making terrible choices.
You are a blessing to those of us in a distressed mental state......opening up the ability to talk openly about one's personal mental state....can only help All of us and especially people afraid to open up. Thank u❤️
I was never diagnosed with schizophrenia but started having intrusive suicidal thoughts and ruminating thoughts and they were like very negative voices in my head putting me down from the moment I woke up to the moment I slept. All day. "What an idiot, you shouldn't have let her go, why did you do that? Fool." things like that, you know? I had already been to 15 psychiatrists and have taken lots of meds but nothing worked. To save my life I studied about Johns Hopkins Safety Guidelines on mushrooms (you know which) and did it on myself.. To my great surprise they told me "90% of your depression is in your gut". Damn. I went to more 15 doctors with different specialties, they had no clue.. It took me 4 months to figure it out but upon removing gluten and dairy for 30 days, the suicidal thoughts and ruminating thoughts (voices) stopped!! The gut brain connection is stronger than big pharma wants us to know. I was shocked, still am. Some months after that I started the best elimination diet there is, carnivore, and lots of other autoimmune symptoms got better too. I'm still figuring it out, using mushrooms to solve what 30 doctors couldn't, it's been quite a journey. Watch your diet!

There is some sort of connection. I don't know exactly what it is but it seems like the less nourishment you have the energy that would go towards your brain is depleted. Your vibration is low as a result and that can attract some very nasty entities.
this vedeo is very practical and usefull not just for patients who suffer negative voices, but also for people who deal with such patients as their relatives. thank you for all .
I live in South Africa, and thought I would mention my take on the way hallucinations are seen in many African countries amongst the more traditional folk. It would be an indication of a calling to become a sangoma, which is a shaman, or medicine man/woman - this seems to be common amongst many ancient cultures across the world, and therefore more accepted. That would probably be why it would be more accepted. However, too many times older folk (esp women) that suffer from dementia are accused of witchcraft and are attacked and killed or if they are lucky driven away. Their odd behavior would bring on suspicion and they would then be blamed for any illness, death, drought or other bad things happening at the time.
It was really nice to see an educational video from someone who has first hand experience with the subject. I feel like this is exceedingly rare for schizophrenia in particular. Thanks for being open and educational about things!
I have bipolar with mania psychosis, on one of my relapses, I seen the devil and he was talking shit to me, I was atheist, but you better believe at the moment lord Jesus I prayed!
I have bipolar 2 disorder- I have only hallucinated for a couple of days (manic episode) once in my lifetime but I never thought of it in that way. Where a hallucination is just interpreted in a negative way due to societal norms and the times. Very nuanced subject-you did it justice
Hi evilm! Psychiatry student here. As a helping comment and only a suggestion (because I read your comment), go check your diagnosis with your therapist/doctor. 1 manic episode is enough to change the diagnosis from a bipolar 2 disorder, to a bipolar 1 disorder. This has significance on the treatment, prognosis and potential treatments. Feel free to dialogue, counter o ask if you need to. Have a nice end year!
@@Nachumbox Huh. My psychiatrist told me, when I got "upgraded" lol from Bipolar 2 to Bipolar 1, that it didn't actually matter as far as treatments go, because the treatments are the same. They're still gonna use mood stabilizers and/or antipsychotics, with a caveat to be careful with antidepressants. He explained that it's a spectrum disorder, and the symptoms they're treating are the guide. For me personally, it was validating and also gave me more information on what to look out for and do if I'm teetering into instability. But my treatment plan never changed, going from 2 to 1.
@@lunacouer Hi Huff Snuffleupagus. Thanks for engaging with your experience, I hope you are doing well! A couple of points: 1. Upgraded: lols indeed. 2. "It didn't actually matter as far as treatments go", yes and no, because... 3. Mood stabilizers: yes, we use mood stabilizers for both disorders, but which one, and at which doses will depend (among other variables) on if it is type 1 or type 2. 4. Antipsychotics: yes, we can use APs for both, but the way and dose we use them differs. On type 2 BD, we tend to use atypical APs in low doses to target insomnia and other minor symptoms, were as in type 1 BD we use both atypical and typical Aps on higher doses to treat psicotic symptoms as well as other type of symptoms (since BD type 1 can have psicotic symptoms and type 2 does not). 5. Antidepressants: yes, we must be careful in both cases with the use of ADs, but in type 1 it is far more restricted because of the risk of having a manic episode (much more severe than a hypomanic episode) compared to type 2 BD (where we are far more lenient on using them if there are a lot of depressive symptoms predominating in your clinical history). Hope my answer helped you get the point on my commentary. Feel free to respond whenever. Wish you an excellent 2022!
@@Nachumbox And thank YOU for taking the time to lay this out. 😊 As I read your comment, I was nodding my head saying "Hey, that's how things went", as far as medication goes. We started with the atypicals once it was clear that it wasn't depression but BP2. My NP kinda glossed over the psychotic...um...year I'd 3 years before I saw her. But that was also 14 years ago, and I don't think it was standard practice back then, that if someone's had one psychotic and/or full-manic episode, to move from BP2 to BP1. All my other symptoms matched BP2 when I saw her. But 5 years later, a different psychiatrist took that year into consideration - hence the upgrade. Just more was/is known about it. What I'm hearing you say is that if my NP and I had known then what we know now, we might have made different medication choices to start out with. That makes sense then, why nothing changed for me. We had already found the combination that worked by then. It just may have taken longer to find it, because we started from a different jumping off point. For me personally, the thing's that's made a huge difference, as far as medication choices go, was having the GeneSight and GenoMind genetic tests. They've been invaluable as far as knowing where to start dosages and what meds to avoid altogether. Just throwing that last part out there as a "I hope all patients have access to these kinds of genetic tests" thing, lol. Thanks for listening to my story, clarifying the differences, and for hanging out in the comments of patient videos. 😊

This was SO interesting! This is something I've always wondered about being someone without schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder. I've wondered the same thing with sleep paralysis, but that's probably very different. Lauren, I just want to say how happy I am that someone like you has taken to create this channel and to break the stigma around schizophrenia and mental illnesses in general. Like I said before, I don't struggle with schizophrenia, but I recognize the need for people like you in this world. You are a very strong and inspiring human!
I am a year late but because you're halfway in-between a dream and reality and since sleep paralysis is such a stressful situation, you begin to dream of bad things. When I had sleep paralysis I thought of a great day at the beach, and began hearing waves and relaxing music before opening my eyes and seeing my room light up with color. It doesn't have to be negative just as long as you don't stress yourself out and expect good things.
I am a registered nurse in the US, and I really appreciate posts like this. The research and devotion you put into your channel shines through in your personality and your content. Thank you!
Thank you for this video, Lauren. I’d love to see you explore the “hearing voices” movement more in future videos, if this is something you and your viewers might be interested in!
No not generally interested in voices. Once in a very long while one will say something intelligent and useful but as a whole, I am generally stronger without their interference. They're kind of a reminder to me why I find no use for patriarchy.
Im schizophrenic. to lose it and be free from it well this is the alternative approach. drink at least 500mg of niacine,DIM(to reduce estrogen in the body) and tryptophan aka 5htp everyday trust me you will feel a tremendous change but it should go with fasting. Niacin, DIM and tryptophan are not meds but supplements so it doesnt have any side effects. You will experience red flush tho when drinking niacin like a sunburn or an allergy for like an hour but it's not dangerous and will disappear eventually. Schizophrenia is often linked to having too much estrogen in the hody so you need to lower it by drinking DIM. avoid meats, junkfood, and sugar and lose that weight, and don't go on yoyo dieting wherein you get thin, you get fat, you get thin again then you get fat again. it will worsen it. bottomline is don't be fat. durvey says that obsese people has a 56% higher chance of having Schizophrenia compared to vegan and healthy people. being fat or going on yoyo dieting will just benefit them cause you are giving out bad life force/energy/aura. stick into being thin. just eat Vegetables and fruits. your body is a temple. You are what you eat. You gotta keep your mind powerful and your body free from temporary gratifications and pleasure. it may not sound related but trust me it is. you will feel the difference. avoid vices like smoking, drugs and alcohol it will worsen it as well. you need a good aura and positive thinking to remove schizophrenia. clean your home. seeing that it's a mess plus thinking your life is a mess will worsen schizophrenia. just eat veggies and lose weight you'll feel the difference. you are what you eat. avoid meat and sugar like sodas, and junk food. your body is a temple and eventually in this holistic technique the voices will be limited or completely gone. do meditation and grounding/earthing everyday. this takes discipline and effort, it will not be gone overnight, you need to this for months or years to see results. download GAIA app then type schizophrenia, watch the videos there it helped me a lot. it has a 7 day trial period. what i did was i watched a bunch of videos in there then cancelled my subscription before it reached the 7th day. lol A temporary remedy is hum a repetitive short irritating lyrics in your mind, a chorus of a popular song. it will block 70% of the voice that you hear. it will be hard the first two days but you'll get used to it on the 3rd onwards and will become a habit to block the voice, this voices this motherfuckers will hate it. again niacin and tryptophan are very important, fasting or drinking only water and eating only vegetables is important and losing weight and maintaining it is important. this is an alternative approach than taking those mood relaxers and medications that will do nothing but to sedate the patients. thank you..
I have one voice in my head. It's always mean, and critical of everything I say and do. I've been through so bad stuff growing up. So I guess that tracks with the speculation.
I just had a panic attack because all my life I've felt I was a freak, it wasn't natural. Most people I have told look at me and talk to me different afterwards, the stigma is real, it affects me, and manly or not it deeply hurts me emotionally as in feeling like an outcast/creep. I still feel bad sometimes about it and it's really hard to help that ingrained feeling, but thank you for this

I think the cultural commentary is a conversation that we should be having more, I feel like I have a very limited idea of neurodivergence because we never really see how people experience mental wellness in other cultures.
The power of positive affirmation is astounding in having your voices come back positive. You think positive in every situation , your voices will do the same , I promise as this was done to me. It takes time, effort, but it is true. I first noticed positivity in a small sense 3 weeks after I began to breed good thoughts.
I seriously experience the exact same thing. If I'm positive and happy and tell them I love them everyday... They do the same. It took me awhile to figure that out. I'm glad you figured it out. It makes it a lot easier.

My view is that Lauren is breaking down the myths surrounding Schizophrenia. Thank You Lauren for producing thought provoking insights into Schizophrenia.

I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia recently by a professional. And I’m glad I found your RUclips . I don’t like the diagnosis. And it’s because it’s another responsibility lol I have to really look after myself now . I have to take my meds just like someone with diabetes who have to take insulin everyday . I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia/ schizoaffective/ depression with psychosis . And I no longer pay attention to the diagnosis as much as I follow treatment I’m really happy to find your channel because I believe meds can only do so much . CBT has helped me even though I only have done 5 sessions
Thank you very much for these wise insights. My daughter was recently diagnosed with major depression and psychosis, and these voices are a big part of that, which is what caught my eye with your video. Your ideas about societal influence are very interesting, and make a lot of sense.
@Erika Stoll For me its between words that have the same pronunciation but have different meanings. And i tend to lean towards the more negative definition in understanding. I speak AMHARIC which has an ABUGIDA alphabets so im very sensitive to sounds and lettering them. I also break words into syllables to make a sentence for example i could see a CLOSET and think "kill owes it", or STREET "stare it" or WHISKY "wish key" the combination of words can be mixed between the two languages. I also translate everyday sounds like birds singing, banging sounds, cars driving past...etc into its closest word or sentence forms. And in most cases its a negative one.
As you and others have described this effect, people like James Joyce and Ezra Pound have used these forms of linguistic.jokes and onomatopoeic and phoenetic slides from one language to another in their literature. It took a lot of work with a move into dream states and what is called the stream of consciousness but it certainly wasn't unknown phenomena. Einstein and others have complained quite a bit about how people made assumptions about scientific language based on lack of actual knowledge make assumptions about the meaning of words. I find schizoaffective hallucinations with language uses the same laziness. Practically the best advice I have ever had on voices of any sort is to utterly ignore them. This crosses over to abuse in public. At first people think that you are just absorbing it masochisticly but as time goes on and there is literally no hook into you they kind of melt away. Internal voices do the same... Because of the way out brains are structured, it usually takes between three to six months to train your brain in any noticeable way to ignore various thoughts and thought patterns
i read a really interesting book called "crazy like us" about this topic if anyone wants more info about this topic, it went into detail about schizophrenia and how it's dealt with cross-culturally.
I keep repeating myself with how much I admire you and how great your videos are. This one, like many others, is the perfect combination of theory and personal experience. You show great respect for the science that studies these experiences and explain very clearly what is known or believed about psychosis, as well as sharing in a neutral way your own opinions and own experiences. You're a fantastic bridge between patients and therapists. As a psychiatrist, I would prefer to show your videos than explaining myself something you already do way better, with the advantage (in this case) of your own experience. Thank you.
Hi Lauren, my name is Lauren too! I’ve recently been diagnosed as schizoaffective bipolar type and your videos have been so helpful! Could you possibly do a video about medication, specifically on management, length of time taking it, and how to reduce over time? Thanks for your great videos!
You gotta keep your mind powerful and your body free from temporary gratifications and pleasure. it may not sound related but trust me it is. you will feel the difference. avoid vices like smoking, drugs and alcohol it will worsen it as well. you need a good aura and positive thinking to remove schizophrenia. clean your home. seeing that it's a mess plus thinking your life is a mess will worsen schizophrenia. just eat veggies and lose weight you'll feel the difference. you are what you eat. avoid meat and sugar like sodas, and junk food. your body is a temple and eventually in this holistic technique the voices will be limited or completely gone. do meditation and grounding/earthing everyday. this takes discipline and effort, it will not be gone overnight, you need to this for months or years to see results. download GAIA app then type schizophrenia, watch the videos there it helped me a lot. it has a 7 day trial period. what i did was i watched a bunch of videos in there then cancelled my subscription before it reached the 7th day. lol A temporary remedy is hum a repetitive short irritating lyrics in your mind, a chorus of a popular song. it will block 70% of the voice that you hear. it will be hard the first two days but you'll get used to it on the 3rd onwards and will become a habit to block the voice, this voices this motherfuckers will hate it. again niacin and tryptophan are very important, fasting or drinking only water and eating only vegetables is important and losing weight and maintaining it is important. this is an alternative approach than taking those mood relaxers and medications that will do nothing but to sedate the patients. thank you.

This is so true for my sister. I appreciate you so much. Culture is also a very important aspect as well. This is a constant mental state for my sister.
I should read up on the effect of basically acknowledging the voices and assigning a character/persona to them. I don't know where I read it, but it said that apparently some people figured out a way to basically co-exist with their voices by going the opposite way - by not trying to keep them out but basically engaging in an inner conversation with them and trying to assign a positive character to them. For some reason, for people who usually hear the same voice(s) it changed the ''attitude'' of said voice(s) quite a bit.
Excellent session today! I have the negative content in my schizophrenia. I'm the author of Regina's Record about my mother's lifelong schizophrenia in lifetime hospitals.
The last voice I heard simply said, "In the middle". I was cleaning out my bedroom closet at the time. It sounded like someone spoke it directly into my ear but I was all alone. I ran out of the apartment in terror. Weird that the sentence was so neutral, though...

thanks so much for being clear and communicative and loving enough to share this, its a huge help to take the edge off the feeling of being alone with this.
Very interesting. I have a friend who's been experiencing auditory hallucinations for several months. In the beginning of this crisis, the voices were benign, but within a few weeks, they became very negative. She's experienced significant trauma in her life, and I won't be surprised if there's a relationship between life experience and negative voices in her case. Thanks for the reference to the article.
There is something that is known as "intrusive thoughts" and all people experience them every once in a while. I've experienced them after going through a lot of stress (usually arising from interpersonal relationships, but sometimes other stress factors caused them). For a very brief moment when such thoughts intrude my psyche, I'd experience a pause in "taking reality at face value and going with the flow of it". During that brief moment, I might think, for instance, how life is pointless the way we live it, which usually happens due to work-related stress (now especially during covid where work from home makes all my days look almost the same). In that short moment of "looking at reality from the outside" (that's how I perceive this transient state) I may feel the urge to do something outrageous (when it happened before, there were times I felt the urge to burst into singing in public transportation) or to do something bad to myself or another person, but it's almost as if a mechanism kicks in just as fast and the thoughts and the urge to act on them subside. I wonder if schizophrenia might be about that blocking mechanism not functioning properly, so intrusive thoughts intensify into voices and in turn enhance these ideations to the point of hallucinations.
This is one of your best videos! You provide some really good insight and food for thought. I appreciate how you covered the cultural, social, and economic factors, which are so often ignored.

Try ignoring them completely and also ignore people that either trigger your hallucinations or obviously are the same assholes that your voices are. It takes time but it works. Eventually you will be able to turn them off like a light switch.
If voices scold you, it's easy to redirect them to someone else. Let's say the voices say you're a fool. You imagine any other person (who is not a fool at all) and focus on them. It's funny and very uplifting. And do it all the time.

I remember a lecture by Robert Sapolsky who saw a Masai woman with schizophrenia. Now, Masai people have "hearing voices" as part of their religious rituals but the problem with this woman was that _she heard voices when she wasn't supposed to._ Also, she butchered a goat despite being a woman and that was _really_ over the line.
This is a wonderful way to introduce someone to what hearing voices is and is like. I am schizoaffective/bipolar and hear criticisms and persecutory voices for around 10 years. Maybe i should send this to my family....they dont seem to know and i dont know how to explain.... 👍
What you’re describing doesn’t sound like auditory hallucinations, but maybe more so intrusive and racing thoughts at night? I think most of us experience this, but if you feel that it is really effecting your ability to sleep or function during day-to-day tasks, I’d recommend you speak with a mental health professional 🖤 good luck
Just don't go to a psychiatrist, go to the wrong one and they will twist what you say, before you know it they force neurotoxic and soul destroying drugs on you because they deem you a danger. We live in a dysfunctional and scary world, it's normal to feel, some psychiatrists want to take away you're mind, your feelings and thoughts.
It does sound possible that what you’re experiencing is intrusive thoughts, which depending on severity, and your reaction to the thoughts, can be part of OCD (among other things). From my understanding, it’s really common for people with OCD to experience especially intense intrusive thoughts at night, so insomnia is a common comorbidity/symptom. But I also think it’s not a great idea to let anyone online tell you if you do or don’t have a diagnosable mental illness or what kind of treatment is or isn’t appropriate. Only a trained professional can give diagnoses after hearing what’s going on in more detail, and they’ll have a better idea of appropriate treatment for you than folk on the internet. I also don’t think that diagnosable mental illness should be the benchmark for seeking help- if it’s bothering you, and you have access to mental health services, I think getting help is pretty much always a good idea. Mental health services are not just there for the mentally ill, in my understanding, they’re there to support anyone who wants to improve aspects of their mental health. Hope things get better soon!
@@issiebrown8460 it's not always a good idea, people on the internet have a firsthand experiemce of mental health services. How much I wish I dealt with my "problems" myself and just exercised more. Never make the mistake of thinking people care in psychiatry, the majority are insecure bullies who will tear you down, unfairly criticise you in their notes, possibly try and prescribe you neurotoxic poison.
Wow. This information you are providing here is so enlighting. I am not schizophrenic or have ever suffered hallucinations. But those conclusions totally make sense to me. I live in Canada but come from Latin America and I see the difference on how people process human interaction and individuality here vs South America. I find people here more vigilant and reactive to "external" personal intervention (aka getting into my business). This may be why they tend to perceive any "external" comment as negative or bad criticism.
They need to do cultural studies on "what the voices are doing, or saying" to everyone within regions, and track the measure and trends of witnessing them. This needs to be constantly done but especially before and after 2004. It should be required by law and a report should be accessible in the public domain. Individual versus collective is actually just a measure of injustice acceptance from groups toward individuals.

*@munch Are these voices actual voices or just thoughts experienced as voices?*
I read on reddit where a guy with schizophrenia had taken the shamanic attitude towards the voices. They shifted drastically and went from extremely negative to joking and fun. He described them as going from evil spirits to spirit guides or like a joking sibling-like relationship.
Maybe they were demons? Hmmm.

I really appreciate that you both share studies and your own experience and how careful you are to say "these are investigations" "these are my speculations"
So very true. She is very careful to keep subjectivity in perspective and it's extremely helpful and honestly, caring.
Sending comfort and empathy to everyone sharing their experiences in the comments ❤️❤️

@Miranda McKennitt there are many forms of meditation, friend. Walking/dancing meditation might be effective for you, or any movement based. Also kundalini yoga, which involves strenuous exercises known as "kriyas," often combined with chants or mantras. And by "effective" I don't mean "makes the voices go away," I mean "makes you a stronger person so you can deal with the voices more easily."
Meditation practices don't make our problems disappear- that is a misconception.
Wtf. It sounds like you have complex ptsd and religion trauma

I was also thinking, that maybe the people from 30s may have avoided talking about the more negative voices from fear
Yes it seems everybody is craving acceptance even those who don't have any mental problems.

There’s actually research on this, people in the west are more likely to experience negative voices rather than positive ones

Studies show that in the west, the voices tend to be more negative than in African countries
@@loverainthunder this sounds so loving and comforting.

Wow. Thank You., I just had to leave a little note. You really understand the journey and process of the disease. Amazing video.
Those voices have a huge impact on the decisions we make
I have bipolar 2 disorder- I have only hallucinated for a couple of days (manic episode) once in my lifetime but I never thought of it in that way. Where a hallucination is just interpreted in a negative way due to societal norms and the times. Very nuanced subject-you did it justice
hallucinations are coming from stimulation in deprivation i proved that
A couple of points:

@@Rocksaplenty it’s true. Try it. It will stop

Love.your chanel... i grew up with my mom being ill, always voices and halucinations
You gotta keep your mind powerful and your body free from temporary gratifications and pleasure. it may not sound related but trust me it is. you will feel the difference. avoid vices like smoking, drugs and alcohol it will worsen it as well. you need a good aura and positive thinking to remove schizophrenia. clean your home. seeing that it's a mess plus thinking your life is a mess will worsen schizophrenia.
just eat veggies and lose weight you'll feel the difference. you are what you eat. avoid meat and sugar like sodas, and junk food. your body is a temple and eventually in this holistic technique the voices will be limited or completely gone. do meditation and grounding/earthing everyday. this takes discipline and effort, it will not be gone overnight, you need to this for months or years to see results. download GAIA app then type schizophrenia, watch the videos there it helped me a lot. it has a 7 day trial period. what i did was i watched a bunch of videos in there then cancelled my subscription before it reached the 7th day. lol
A temporary remedy is hum a repetitive short irritating lyrics in your mind, a chorus of a popular song. it will block 70% of the voice that you hear. it will be hard the first two days but you'll get used to it on the 3rd onwards and will become a habit to block the voice, this voices this motherfuckers will hate it.
again niacin and tryptophan are very important, fasting or drinking only water and eating only vegetables is important and losing weight and maintaining it is important. this is an alternative approach than taking those mood relaxers and medications that will do nothing but to sedate the patients. thank you..

This is incredible, I’m blown away by this information. Thank you dear lady for sharing🙏💙

Wow this was super interesting ! 😂🤣 good point !!
My brother it s also sick i pray for you guy s💖any way you are very handsome🥰
I never thought of that. Thank you for sharing.
They are teachings of your own.
Shamanic approach would be to learn from it as much as that is a gift .
A beautiful trait 🙏😊
i read a really interesting book called "crazy like us" about this topic if anyone wants more info about this topic, it went into detail about schizophrenia and how it's dealt with cross-culturally.

So interesting Lauren thank you. Very well explained. Love and health to you. ❤

This was extremely interesting and informative. So well researched. The mix of this research with personal experience makes for a compelling video.
It is very scary and very stressful!
I always come to you videos and feel so much better about myself. Thank you.

It takes time but it works. Eventually you will be able to turn them off like a light switch.
If voices scold you, it's easy to redirect them to someone else. Let's say the voices say you're a fool. You imagine any other person (who is not a fool at all) and focus on them. It's funny and very uplifting. And do it all the time.
its demons get a deliverance in JESUS CHRIST THESE VOICES ARE disembodied spirits DEMONS JESUS died for us becuz of them, but it dont stop them from infecting humans, they get in one in the womb, and moreso later from rejection, tramaua etc deliverance works BUT THEN WALK CLOSE WITH THE LORD OR THEY GET BACK IN WORST, BE BLESSED
Recently I opened up a great album that I bought years ago. It has opened a new graze of my life as a hebafrenia. Thanks Lauren you work so hard I hope your donations multiply xxxx Davey Grace
Hi Lauren, can you make a video about long-term care homes for schizophrenics? Maybe even give us a tour of what one looks like?
Verdiğiniz tüm bilgiler için teşekkür ederim thank you Lauren
I remember a lecture by Robert Sapolsky who saw a Masai woman with schizophrenia. Now, Masai people have "hearing voices" as part of their religious rituals but the problem with this woman was that _she heard voices when she wasn't supposed to._ Also, she butchered a goat despite being a woman and that was _really_ over the line.
lol has he ever spoken to a pentecostal with schizophrenia? 😂
This is a wonderful way to introduce someone to what hearing voices is and is like.
I am schizoaffective/bipolar and hear criticisms and persecutory voices for around 10 years. Maybe i should send this to my family....they dont seem to know and i dont know how to explain....
👍
Fascinating!
Hi Lauren!! Thank you so much for your help and efforts you are truely a Blessing and we are on this journey together💪🏿😉.
I have mostly at night cruel thoughts that disturb my sleep. I ask myself if I have an undiagnosed mental illness.
@Miranda McKennitt I feel like you really don’t have to right to say “no” to that 😬🥴
Just don't go to a psychiatrist, go to the wrong one and they will twist what you say, before you know it they force neurotoxic and soul destroying drugs on you because they deem you a danger.
Your channel is so informative. Impressive and necessary. About time some very intelligent pair of human beings decided to narrate their story and share it with all of us who are living in circumstances like yours. Love you guys. Please, keep going!
