I would love to see a video where Hannah shows us what her meals look like over a few days. My son has schizophrenia and is vegan. He will not engage with any mental health team or take any medication. I believe his version of a vegan diet is leaving him very undernourished as it relies heavily on carbs. Hi Lauren, many thanks for this very interesting video. I think the main reason why someone goes vegan is for the animals and then health and then the planet. It’s a philosophy not just a diet. We don’t wear leather etc. It’s best to have a whole food vegan diet and the majority of ex vegans followed these different vegan diets like raw vegan etc. A really great RUclips channel that is very scientific is Mic the Vegan. He really knows his stuff. But once again many thanks for this video. I’m trying a whole food vegan diet and my paranoid schizophrenia has really improved. I feel pretty normal these days (I’m also on a depot that helps), and I feel part of a growing loving community of vegans. Wishing you and Rob and the lady in this video the best.

Yes! So many people I talk to think going vegan is a lifestyle choice rather than an ethical choice! I think this is why unfortunately veganism gets so much bad press, people associate it with middle class "yuppies" due to celebrities going vegan for health reasons (although many celebrities are also ethical vegans), when that is not what ethical veganism is about. This is why vegans now have introduced the term plant-based to refer to those who choose the diet for health reasons in opposition to vegans who choose this diet for ethical reasons.

Wow! Hannah has an interesting diet for keto! I am amazed at her young age to turn vegetarian. Very cool. I am also impressed she doesn't track macros; I rely on them and feel accomplished when I get good ketone levels after my meals. I'm almost obsessed with knowing my macros and stats. I do wonder how many total vs net carbs she tends to eat to stay in ketosis with all those fibrous foods (nuts, vegetables). And I wonder what time of day she tracks ketones. I know that in the morning my ketones are too low, before lunch a little higher but not always therapeutic, and then before dinner, usually therapeutic and where I want them. I appreciate the mindset talk too. Thank you for sharing! I'm currently doing a low fodmap + keto diet and it's quite challenging, can't wait to get to the bottom of some digestive issues and expand my food base again. I tried carnivore but only lasted 3 meals - it was SO hard to be that restrictive though I was all willing. Great interview!

It should be noted that vegetarian/vegan diet is often considered/investigated as a possible cause for mental disorders. Nothing conclusive, but high correlation is proven (for example Michalak, Zhang, Jacobi - Vegetarian diet and mental disorders: results from a representative community survey (2012)) . Since keto diet is in itself still in experimental phase, it would be not advisable to go with something that could actually worsen your mental health.

    • @janem5900

Though there is scant research and correlation is in itself not a tool for proof, ethical vegans tend to be more sensitive and are negatively impacted by the mass and daily cruelty inflicted on nonhuman animals. It would be interesting to know if researchers have factored in this aspect.

In any case, is HSP caused by vegan/vegetarian diet or it is other way around (HSP chooses such diet) is an interesting question. The animals we create are morally equivalent to our own children and are owed the exact same unconditional love and protection. The experiences of animals are real and matter. Their suffering is identical in nature to our own. It harms us when we take pleasure in cruelty and violence.
Veganism is not a diet, it is an ethical philosophy. Perhaps you mean to say "plant-based". If someone thought that most women deserve to own property, but not their wife, you would not call them "mostly feminist", you would call it spousal abuse. Thinking that most animals deserve to live without being treated as property, but not egg-laying hens is not "mostly vegan", it's just animal abuse.

I think compassion would inspire an understanding of her decision to incorporate eggs into her otherwise vegan diet. Being well enables her to help others. Utilitarianism is a rational and respectful consideration. Am presently looking into the vegan medical keto diet and it does present as a challenge.
Though I do not understand why Hannah mentioned that 'it is up to others choice and that she doesn't see it as wrong to eat animals nor does she see veganism as ethically superior'.
It would be wonderful if she did not shy away from emphasising the ethical consistency of adopting a vegan lifestyle.

Except more animals die for tofu than the 1 cow that might feed you for 6 months. Plus cows are integral part of ecosystem which creates ecological niche for many other forms of life to exist.
Take a look at industrial farming field and how much life there is compared to regenerative bio farm without pesticides.

@@janem5900 every animal abuser on the internet swears up and down that they only get their meat from Happy animals who lived happy lives. I wish I knew where they were getting their meat. It's a fucking lie. If you're willing to murder an innocent creature for pleasure, then you're willing to do it in a slightly more cruel way if it means paying a fraction of the price. Get real.

You absolutely need eggs, fish, and meat for brain health. Eggs alone go a very long way, but red meat and fish are essential Superfoods, and vegetables contain antinutrients like lectins which cause leaky gut and inhibit nutrient absorption and oxalates, which are neurotoxic. Your brain needs DHA, which is absent from plant foods, and your brain is made up primarily of saturated fat, cholesterol, and omega 3 fatty acids. Plant-based diets are detrimental for brain health. Please, anyone watching, do a meat-based keto diet, not a plant based keto diet.

Hi Lauren! I want to share this video with you and your community here! I am thinking about Vegan Keto. I can't eat dairy and I don't want to focus on meat because of my cholesterol. So! I found this show recently on one of my favorite youtube channels DR MARK HYMAN (Funcitonal Medicine Doctor) and it's about Vegan Keto and the person doing it is also a doctor and surgeon! Here is the info. I won't share a link but the title is "Is It Possible To Be Vegan-Keto?" and the channel is @drmarkhyman and the guest is Dr. Carrie Diulus and he calls his podcast "The Doctor's Farmacy" the misspelling is intentional the FARM is the Pharmacy. :) I wonder if these doctors would come on your show or have you on theirs! I think you might ask. I can't wait to see your TED talk someday! Another thing I think you might ask to be on. :) Your friend in health, Michelle in new mexico

Sweetheart. Nobody claims that this diet doesnt approve our (mental) health.
It just doesnt CURE it. And I feel like you wish you had a cure for it.

But living symptom free, even if not cured, would be very beneficial, no?
