Then you melt the thing on the copper thing and pour it to pre-heated space that looks like dented cookie cutter. If you fail you wouldn't have been able to lift it from the cutter so you lose the money and get no candy. Basically the Millenial Koreans were trained since childhood to make perfect Dalgonas.
From what I've learned from watching behind the scenes of Squid Game, and down the rabbit hole of how to make this candy, it's truly an art form. A couple things: The guy who made the dalgona for “Squid Games” used powdered sugar on the metal flattened thing. Also: In “Netflix Korea’s” interview with some of the cast members from “Squid Game,” they had to play the dalgona game as they answered questions. To help them along, they were given a toothpick and a lighter.
@@ezrawitane Where have you heard this? I happen to BE Korean who grew up with this stuff and that was never a thing. In fact some vendors actually GIVE YOU a needle or a toothpick when you buy one.
I can't help wondering if the kit was more of a hindrance than a help. After having just watched Emmy's (aka emmymade's) video on making this with things from around her own kitchen (a ladle, disposable chopstick, greased baking paper, a flat bottomed bowl and cookie cutter shapes) it seemed much easier than the flattening method used here.
Although I feel like that would result in a botched by babish episode where he would have to try the traditional method. But also I feel like we're going to get a botched by babish episode anyway from this so that he can succeed.
Sorry for the late tips but you should be heating it over low heat, not medium heat. Also, give it about 15-20 seconds to cool after pouring it out before you stamp it. You can grease your stamper to help it come off a bit easier, but you shouldn't have to if you made them properly. Hope these tips helped.
This episode... I feel it. When things just keep going wrong and things keep breaking on you. Wish I could end this on an inspirational note, but that's just extremely relatable to me, full stop.
Fun Fact : the man who made the dalgonas for filming is the person who has been making it for more than a decade. He has been doing his thing at the same spot for years and every Seoul ppl knew where to find him even before the show. Really amazing to see what kind of buzz that the guy has created all over the world.

Great vid, I made it and it took me eight attempts in total. I few things that I did to make it work great was by pouring it on to a cutting board, smashing it with a spatula, and after pressing the shape I took a glass cup, turned it upside down and pressed it into the candy. That gave it the perfectly round shape. It looked more like the one that was in squid game then I expected.
Maybe 2 points for the Botched episode: 1. I've already seen it mentioned a few times here, but ppopgi masters in Korea dust their work surfaces with sugar rather than oil. 2. There's technically a difference between "dalgona" and "ppopgi". Although most people even in Korea don't really care about it, what Babish made is technically ppopgi rather than dalgona. The difference is that dalgona is made by melting blocks of solid glucose with baking soda and is usually served as is (rather than stamping down and pressing into shapes), while ppopgi is made by melting granulated sugar (not block glucose) with baking soda, and is usually pressed into the shapes we see in SG that need to be picked out ("ppopgi" literally means "plucking out" or "picking out").
So Babish deserves a luxurious meal that he will absolutely enjoy. He should make the Australian Wagyu dried aged for 35 days and cooked to a perfect medium rare from Modern Family
I can’t believe Babish lived through that challenge, he literally broke the Dalgona like 1,000 times. Legend says that he’s the cameraman of Squid Game.
Just goes to show that even the best chefs have epic fails too. That makes me feel better about my own kitchen fails of which I will never discuss again. 😝😝😝
Nope. A layer of sugar is what is traditionally used to prevent the dalgona from sticking to the table. A cookie tray with sugar would have been better.
Nor are we going to acknowledge for a dangerously long time how he looked like he was assembling some sort of recreational drug mixture, which while it could technically be called a "recipe", is probably not something you want to do on a platform that is looking more and more like Squid Game to many of its independent creators.

@@SeanStrife hopefully temporary, but it has been 4 months since I lost it.

I found a nice trick to make them stick less. Coat both the surface and the press lightly with powdered sugar. It really helped a lot
A couple things:
The guy who made the dalgona for “Squid Games” used powdered sugar on the metal flattened thing.
Also: In “Netflix Korea’s” interview with some of the cast members from “Squid Game,” they had to play the dalgona game as they answered questions. To help them along, they were given a toothpick and a lighter.
they used a needle, not a toothpick
@@ezrawitane you usually get a toothpick in Korea…
@@ezrawitane Where have you heard this? I happen to BE Korean who grew up with this stuff and that was never a thing. In fact some vendors actually GIVE YOU a needle or a toothpick when you buy one.
@@ezrawitane Kindly stop.
@@ezrawitane hm. Guess it differs between vendors and regions.
And here's the dalgona everyone's wanted!
Squid game is the most overrated show in Netflix history. The main character is dumb asf, and the show was very predictable. The ending was awful...
69 attempts LATER, this video was produced!

This was a remarkably salty episode despite the fact that dalgona contains none.
but it does. baking soda is a salt. ;)

After trying to make dalgona myself, I'm happy to see someone struggling as much as I did....
Same 😆😆😆
As a native Korean, I can certainly say that your Dalgona pronunciation is spot on!
If only his pressing was as spot on with suger not oil

The candy one 🍭 was pretty fun right...
(Do you like to carve *the shape of honeycomb toffee* right? Are you sure about that 😏?)
5:05 The increasing anger during this episode makes it the best one so far.
Try parchment paper. Also don't freeze when removing it, do it with confidence and in one motion
"Something has appeared to have happened here" is a versatile quote
And what it is ain't exactly clear
“Uh oh, I broke it.”
Squid Game: *You know the rules, and so do I.*
0:40 which implies that Babish know what a high quality one is like 🤣
This episode...
It's when he explains the rules is when it dawns on me how absurd Squid Game is.
If you need a scary & disgusting dish to make on the week of Halloween:
2012 TMNT- Mikey's pizza (Pizza Face episode)
Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race- Icelandic Feast
Etc.
Babish: "Woops, I broke it"
Gaurd: "U wot???"
*Gunshot sounds...💥🔫*
What if you made something too unhealthy and can give you a heart attack:
The Owl House- The Fried Orb
Steven Universe- Literally All Toppings Pizza
2011 Looney Tunes- either Daffy's Powdered Sugar casserole breakfast or Porky's Buttered Dishes
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs- Pizza stuffed inside a Turkey (whole thing deep fried and dipped in chocolate)
etc.
so you want to end this channel
You should check out Epic Meal Time.
nikocado avocado moment???
Already did that with Meat Tornado
"Man with the whisk" Temporary title of Mr.Babish
Great vid, I made it and it took me eight attempts in total. I few things that I did to make it work great was by pouring it on to a cutting board, smashing it with a spatula, and after pressing the shape I took a glass cup, turned it upside down and pressed it into the candy. That gave it the perfectly round shape. It looked more like the one that was in squid game then I expected.
“Well greased Coke mirror”
Had to listen to that again to make sure I wasnt hearing things 😂😂
I think this is my favorite episode for the pure entertainment of it, I’m a huge fan and it’s super cool to see you progress as a creator
Seeing a chef as talented and skilled as Andrew brought to his knees by korean caramel is truly something
Can you make something gross that it's too scary to eat/drink before Halloween?:
Regular Show- Rig Juice
SpongeBob SquarePants- Nasty Patty
etc.
Maybe 2 points for the Botched episode:
The deadpan way Babish said "welp, I'm dead"
I've found that using parchment paper instead of a metal surface makes it much easier to take off the dalgona at the end :D
Maybe on the week of Halloween, you make the Jelly Eyeballs from Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch
Alien Eyeball Dumplings!
I can't tell what's harder, getting the shape out or actually making the candy.
Maybe you should make Dangerous Soup from, "Are You Afraid of the Dark", TV Series on any day in October
Loved that show during the 90s.👍
So Babish deserves a luxurious meal that he will absolutely enjoy. He should make the Australian Wagyu dried aged for 35 days and cooked to a perfect medium rare from Modern Family
I can’t believe Babish lived through that challenge, he literally broke the Dalgona like 1,000 times.
Legend says that he’s the cameraman of Squid Game.
If you put in on sugar on the press, it's easier to separate.
Just goes to show that even the best chefs have epic fails too. That makes me feel better about my own kitchen fails of which I will never discuss again. 😝😝😝
I actually managed to scramble eggs inside of batter once 😓
Would heating those mirror pads have helped?
NO, doodle head??
...if the sugar being hot was what made it sticky, why would heating it up more help?
Nope. A layer of sugar is what is traditionally used to prevent the dalgona from sticking to the table. A cookie tray with sugar would have been better.
@@johnhwang5153 Thanks for the tip.
@@johnhwang5153 can I just use wax paper instead of the metal surface?
ah man another episode of my favorite show: "babish works really hard and accomplishes nothing"!!! i love it can't wait for the next one
On the week of Halloween or any Tuesday in October, you make Double Dutch Cherry Muffins from Frankenweenie movie
Lots of other comments have said this, but I really appreciate that you include the struggle and the failure along the way. Cooking is hard!!
Ironically, Babish fails to make the one thing almost anybody can make
The way he nonchalantly says “ *oh, im dead* “
It’s extremely comforting to know I wasn’t the only one who had a very hard time getting these right
"well greased coke mirror"
So we're just gonna not acknowledge that?
No. We're not.
Nor are we going to acknowledge for a dangerously long time how he looked like he was assembling some sort of recreational drug mixture, which while it could technically be called a "recipe", is probably not something you want to do on a platform that is looking more and more like Squid Game to many of its independent creators.
