Sriram is a great personality. I have had the privilege to be with him for a year+ when we were doing our computer education. That was late 90s. His memory and wide knowledge about worldly aspects makes him a walking encyclopaedia. He loves history, music, and business aspects. Manages his time very well. Over the years looks like he spent more time pursuing his passion and love for the city. I wish him all the success in future.
I was born and raised in Chennai but don't live in the town anymore. My recent visits to the town has me alienated (felt like i don't belong) but after watching this video, you have restored the faith in me. May be ill look at the town from my dad's eyes who taught me so much about this town while growing up. Its the narration and the facts as-is makes you a Rockstar Historian! I hope i get to hang out with you some day over a cup of Kapi! BTW i just looked up the pics of MyLady's park (never knew) on Google maps, Still a charming place. Definitely on my list during my next visit!
What a lovely conversation 😊 I discovered Sriram sir only recently through Instagram. After consuming all his online content, I’ve just started reading his book. He has made me fall in love with my city 😍
Thank you both for taking us down memory lane. I ( and for that matter many of us) have seen the best of Madras - when Mount Road , Marina Beach, Edward Elliotts Road etc were litter-free zones , . Coming to the Program , It was lively , informative and casual - Mr Sriram , please keep such ones coming - God Bless you in your endeavours.🎉
I grew up in north Madras until I left india in 1964. I remember ER Robison park which washometote DMK,Royapuram Railway station above whichtherewere 4 flats and one was our home. Places like z roadway theater, prabhat theater. Mi erva,Casino and New Eliphantstone on mount road, come to mind. home
Thanks Sriram, sitting at home in the 21st century I was transported back to the 19th century . Selection of visuals and commentary were as usual too perfect .
Lovely programme that took me down memory lane and brought back images of Madras of the 60s and 70s where I grew up. Sad indeed that the name was changed to Chennai - a word I refuse to utter. Wish I could meet you when I am in Madras again… Suresh / Copenhagen
Love Sir's stories. Even as a voracious reader, I didn't know about many of these things ( and others from his videos) and mostly nothing about the literature he refers to. Met him once in Mumbai too (after his talk). Hope more people will gain knowledge and spread it like him!!!
I remember my father and uncle taking us (we were a joint family) to see the new lighthouse before it was inaugurated across from the All India Radio station on Beach Road. A lot of Madrasis (before they became Chennai Vaasis) were deeply upset because the old lighthouse at the High Court was taller. We could pick shells up on the beach back then before sewage from the Cooum killed off most of the flora and fauna in the sea. You would also read articles in The Hindu and the Indian Express when fishermen saw or caught a Whale Shark or a similar large fish. I am considerably younger than Mr Sriram, but I have great memories - like most people do, irrespective of their age - of Madras that is Chennai as Mr Muthiah called this lovely city. Thank you for a delightful conversation!
I worked and lived in Madras (not Chennai, et!) in 1973-74, and the only place that was famous for biryani was Buhari's.I have seen biryani being prepared in Uzbekistan, Khazikistan and other Stans.
As a child, I have great memories of watching English movies. Movies of james bond, cowboy movies in gaeity, casino, alankar was a regular feature for Madras residents.
I have played in those days in my lady's garden. In 1970s it was there. I have seen Moore market burnt down during MGR rule.Kannapar thidal was there. Cirus used to be staged there. Big boxing matches were held there.

What is wrong with you? Playing victim over an innocuous discussion of history. You cannot erase history just because you find it offensive. It is part of YOUR history too. It is what allows you now to look back and hate everybody but your own kind. Think about it.

What is the kind of colour grading / filtering you do for this kind of look?
It definitely is a classic effect, which was probably chosen because of the topic of Old Madras.

One striking feature was, 75% of the crowd coming to cinema were very well dressed.
