People give way too much importance to light weight wheels tires. Shedding few pounds of wheel weight for a drag race is like shaving your legs to prep for a swimming. Sure it could make a difference between gold and silver in the olympics, but for some guy swimming laps in the rec pool, it's not going to matter.
@@flyonbyya he did research if you had watched the video. He did a live comparison to see the difference from listed and actual. He did gained what he wanted which was a new look. Use eyes and ears before commenting.
Like the old ones better, makes the car look more robust!! But, both ways look good though. Thanks for your time and effort Brooks. You know we'll appreciated.
You nailed it look wise Brooks, of course the rotational mass will help acceleration and deceleration but the real benefit is in cornering you know the unsprung weight reduction is critical for handling. Also what a bargain!!!!
The super lightweight wheels definitely looks the part. And great work on the wheel swapping and performance grading between the wheels, you really are passionate about your work.
Tire weight plays a big role as you’ve pointed out. However, the main benefits of wheel, along with especially tire weight, is that it’s reducing unsprung weight (which helps with damping control/ride), as well as the rotational inertia. The benefit of having a lower rotational inertia, is that it will noticeably improve your accel. times. Specifically, the more you reduce the mass of the wheel out at its extremes (ie especially at the tire tread), the more your rotational inertia will decrease. Here’s a good reference as to how it improves acceleration: www.caranddriver.com/features/a15130598/upsized-wheels-tires/
Terry Forth really? How many people fit larger brakes to their cars and think, ‘maybe I better not fit these as their heavier’? Your better off removing weight from the car, seats etc. (costs nothing) One less gallon of fuel in the tank will be better than spending thousands on lighter wheels!
Water Gate based on your response, I can only assume that you don’t know what rotational inertia means, and you didn’t bother to read the article either. Mass does not have the same effect everywhere on the car. For example, do you know why E90/2 M3 implemented a Carbon Fiber roof? Do you really think it was simply to reduce vehicle weight??
Terry Forth lol. I used to have a m3 csl actually. Great track day car. Unsprung weight on a street car isn’t as important as sprung weight. Most people wouldn’t notice any difference with lighter wheels on the street. That’s why clever people don’t concern their self with it 👍 I forgot to add that my m3 also had a thinner rear screen as well as the carbon roof. If you think bmw did this other than weight saving, your talking to the wrong guy? Byyyyyyyyyye
Been watching your channel for years now and have to say car youtubers (Shmee) needs to be more like you. Instead of just mindlessly showing off your cars you actually do very constructive testing, keep it up.
So much better looking w the new wheels! And when it comes to unsprung weight on the car if you dont go to a smaller wheel or a composite wheel ur not gonna lose that much weight. All wheels have to meet rigidity standards so to lose crazy weight on wheels that both are considered spoke designs is tough. 8lbs total is a lot of weight to lose in unsprung mass on the corners. Car looks completely different w the new wheels congrats
Good test. The new wheels look better; not worth the McLaren upcharge money if paying full price though. You got it all for a steal; can't beat that.😇 As far as your tire street testing; an expected outcome. However, I noticed your rear tires psi settings - between 29 & 30. Believe it or not, those Pirelli tires prefer a little more air for better traction/middle patch contact. Pressure between 34 & 36 cold may result in slightly better 0-60 times. The fronts at 38psi are fine...less rolling resistance. Just passing along a piece of personal findings during my own Pirelli tires testing experiences.😀
The super light weight wheels look much better and suits the car more as compared to older wheels they were also nice but the newer ones just looks nicer
Love the new wheels. I think 8lbs of savings is ok when you equate it to rotating mass. Just do what Demon owners do and rip everything out of your $300k car when you race!!!
I constantly tell so many of my car buddies that changing wheels and tires will do so much more than paying for some mods and tunes. You pretty much showed a perfect example here. Nice video Brook. Look forward to seeing you at Jumbolair in April. I am a sponsor this time around.
Hit that on the nail buddy the Toyo is a little heavier but the Toyo grip is way more compared to the Pirelli.. I don't like Pirelli tires I like the old wheels better nice video and I have the same impact and love it!!! That McLaren is amazing piece of technological genius
Every pound counts. Slight plus being rotating weight but I'd say it was worth it. Change up a look a bit and can run very different rubber just changing the wheels out. Just need to be careful when you start going down the weight savings route. "This week on DragTimes I run the 720s with full interior then without". 3 episodes later and all he has is a seat cushion and bungee cords for the driver.
you also have to remember that even stock wheels on your high end cars are forged anyway. Its not like your going from a cast aluminum wheel to a forged wheel. In the cast wheel case you would be dropping good weight when going to a ultra light wheel. But, since money is no object here, 2 lbs per wheel is significant. Good test. I bet cast to ultra light must be close to 4lbs per wheel, which would be awesome.
Both wheels look great! The weight savings isn't mind blowing when you think in terms of lbs. But considering it's all unsprung weight, the benefits are immense.
To begin with, I wouldn't have picked that particular style with the old wheels, so yea for what is worth I definitely prefer the new light weight reels, at least they look so much better. I think once you put on some Toyos you should see some benefits. Make sure you get them balanced though.
fronts were 1# lighter with wheel and tire combo. What was the difference between the tires? Same size tire can be 3# difference depending on make/model. Your super light-weight wheels are probably more than just 1# lighter. Pirelli Pzero's by the way are pretty light tires.
That 1/2 Fuel Impact is a bit too large and overkill for your lug nuts. I'm really digging the new 3/8 Fuel Stubby that uses the smaller M12 batteries and delivers 250 foot pounds.
Im surprised the pzero grip tires did well. I was guessing a 3 sec 0-60 time. Goes to show how well the 720s puts the power down. It would be spin city in my viper. Thats why i left those tires on my stock wheels and switched to Pilot Sport 4S on Forgelines.
Wow impressed the 720s did a 0-60 3.0 sec. GTR I was in just did without launch control 0-60 3.76sec (2.45 60 foot). But 0-60 2.50 (1.70 60 foot) with launch control. Car was modded.
Both sets looks amazing. From a performance perspective it would have been very nice to have seen the difference of the actual rims (with same tires at same wear level). But cool anyway :-)
Brooks what's your take on an aftermarket carbon fiber if the price point was the same? I know your Ford GT has them from the factory but an equivalent size vs the lightweight on the mclaren, any clue how much additional you might save?
Shit for 2 grand those rims better come with the diamonds they were cut with, especially if I already optioned $6000 for 8lbs weight savings. Ridiculous.
Another great video Brooks! I have a question for you...I have heard that the R888Rs have a lot of road noise with standard street driving....is that true? I am thinking of running them on my vette rear tires.....and Michelin cup 2 tires on the front to help reduce road noise....sound logic??
I actually like the old wheels better. I picked those in silver on my spider order but im having them immediately powder costed in hi gloss black. After this video I don't regret not speccing the super light weight wheels either!
Nice vid Brooks!... man put the best tyre on the lightest wheel!!! every bit counts... :) or you can lose 3 pounds of bodyweight and have the same effect :)
You know you can change the settings of the Impact Wrench down by the battery, right! Press the button, and it toggles through the different torque settings. The Milwaukee App was initially designed for management/company owners etc., to keep track of their tools and how they're being used... Also, I understand the effectiveness of lighter components for drag racing and all, but your OEM wheels look much better than your drag set...
Love me some Milwaukee. Curious though testing it with a torque how close to set spec it is. I have some many batteries for Milwaukee hope i can find it with no battery or charger.
I would have the Toyos on the super lightweight wheels for drag racing. Even a few Lbs can make a difference in a drag race.
Josh Vee my thoughts exactly
Yea but then his wheels won’t match when he’s street driving. Unless he switches all 4 every time.

That acceleration is unbelievable!
Put the R888 on the lighter wheels Brooks. Do a 1lb rolling mass calculation.
