UTQG tread wear ratings can play an important part in peoples tire purchase decision, especially for track day tires where the assumption is a lower treadwear means a grippier tire.
To test this, I buy five popular tires, with treadwear 300, 220, 180 and 100 UTQG ratings, and test them on track to see if a lower treadwear rating really does mean more grip!
The tires on test are the immensely popular:
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S UTQG 300 AA A
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 180 AA A
    Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 220 AA A
    Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R 100 AA A
    Toyo R888R 100 AA A
This was tested at the fastest track in North America, Nelson Ledges in Ohio, using a Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE, which was a mighty impressive car!
Information on all these tires can by found on www.tire-reviews.com

What's the point in testing tyres with different speed rating and or different load index? That test is useless. Also because you don't give the info, it can only be seen in close up photos.
One tyre, the same model, year, factory, size but with different speed rating and load index, will behave differently.

I think the internet loves the R888r more so for roll racing then its track performance. For whatever reason, it seems to be able to hook big HP cars nearly as well as a drag radial from a roll, but still have the sidewall stiffness to be stable at speed, handle half decent, and have more tread life then a drag radial on the street.

The NT01s have been on backorder for over a year, so I had to look at other options. Choices for my tire sizes are very limited. Nobody is talking about them and for sure they are a good intermediate/advanced-skill track tire. If you want to just show up, rip it up at the track, and then drive home, SC3's and/or 3R's are what you want. Haven't driven the SC3's in the wet yet but hopefully I won't need to. They wear great, communicate on the track, and the grip is way better than what I've used before. Definitely hit up TireRack and see if they make them in your car sizes. Nice test and thank you for doing this. For best track performance Goodyear recommended f/r cold pressures for Supercar 3R = 26 psi/26 psi with target hot pressures f and r of 32-35 psi. Supercar 3 cold pressures f/r = 28 psi/28 psi with target hot pressures of 35 - 37 psi front and 37 - 39 psi rear. By the way, and apologies if this has already been mentioned. The "zed zed" 1LE is actually an SS 1LE with a naturally aspirated 6.2L engine rated at 455HP/455TQ. And not the higher performance supercharged ZL1 1LE which is rated at 650HP/650TQ. Many differences between SS 1LE and ZL1 1LE. Finally, the Supercar 3 is the OEM tire developed with Goodyear for the SS 1LE. Whereas the Supercar 3R is the OEM ZL1 1LE tire.

Not sure you actually answered the question but looking back at the result table, the tyres became progressively quicker as the tread wear rate increased. The odd one out was the Toyo which is simply not such a good tyre but still slightly 'grippier' than the Sport 4S. So in conclusion, in most cases yes, Higher Wear does = More Grip.

Regarding the 888R, I think it used to be held in higher regard due to being an old carcass that goes back something like a decade or more. It and the NT01 were pretty good wearing track tires, and while I think ultimate feel, grip and laptime have drastically dropped since those tires debuted, they can still be a viable option due to their longevity. Hankook RS4 strikes me as one of the street tires that takes that philosophy in the current era.

I’m so pleased you did this review, especially since you drove the SS 1LE for the test...same car I own. The Goodyear SC3’s are the OE tires for both the SS 1LE and ZL1, while the SC3R’s are for the ZL1 1LE’s. While your test showed a slight time disadvantage of the SC3 to the PS2’s, they’re a hell of a lot cheaper and last longer. Thus, they are the best bargain for street/track use, like an SS 1LE, and I continue to stick with them. If I get the itch to spend more money, I may give the SC3R’s a try now that they are available for the OE 20” wheels.

Excellent review, thank you for posting. I have a 21 zl1 and on the track the sc3, after about one lap, are amazing. They deal with track use well. The sc3 for street daily, in dry and above about 50, are good tires. They do kick up stones and are loud, tram line a bit, but stick, good road feel. The downside, light/medium rain is just ok not great. Heavy rain and ponding water, they are not good, like right lane slow or even stop for a bit. I drive the conditions for the tire/car. I’ve had a variety of performance tires (pss, eagle F1 emt, and a few others) and the sc3 in heavy rain is the worst I’ve experienced in terms of a tire in the rain. The sc3 only has 7/32 from new, I think sc3 r is less like 5/32 I think so driving those in rain is a bad idea. The sc3 Under 50, sc3 is not fun to drive, so I do not… So it really boils down to how much track driving I plan on and how late into fall or early spring I want to drive in my case. If rain wasn’t a factor I’d say sc3 would be the jam…

The R888R were great a couple years ago but now, there are much better choices out there. Now it's just what I would call a scene tire. You're most likely going to see a tire like this at car shows rather than the track nowadays. It's right up there with the Firehawk Indy 500 or the Bridgestone RE003 in other countries. The scene is just obsessed with these tires.

I have to ask, what exactly do you think is wrong with the RE003? In my experience it has slightly worse wet grip, comfort and road noiss than a PS4s, but it has better feedback and identical if not better dry grip and it's available in many more sizes for usually less than half the price

    • @PiroFyre
      @PiroFyre 2 года назад

@@atomickoala62 It's an old tire at this point that there WERE better tires to be had for a similar price point. One of them being the Yokohama Apex V601. In fact, pre-covid and during, the V601s were even cheaper. The RE003 is so old that the successor, the RE004s, are out.
At the time of writing, there were tires in the same price bracket, and even less, that were better options than the RE003. But since we're in a post-covid world now, they are now a "not too bad" tire to buy as the other better tires have gone up in price. Although I'd still buy the Apex V601 over the RE003 but that's just my preference in tires.

Great review. I have a 19 SS 1LE and the SC3's are great. They aren't the best daily tire though even though you can daily with them, you just have to drive very conservatively with them in rain and cold weather. I just bought some Michelin PSS tires (haven't installed them yet) to try and get better life and a better rain/cold weather tire than the SC3 as I DD my car in the southeastern United States. I've got about 12,200K on my SC3's right now, and they are very worn especially in the rear. They still grip pretty well, but one thing the GEN6 Camaros do well is they don't have a tramlining issue even with large, sticky tires, but went the SC3's start to get pretty worn they will start to tramline some. Hopefully I won't regret going from the SC3's to the PSS's. I thought maybe a Pilot Super Sport on a Camaro Super Sport seemed like a good idea.... Maybe?

We had already used the stock Pirellis that came with the car, R888R and the SC2 tires all previously at the track. Since that time we have continued using the F1 3R tires as they are not only perform great on the track (in our opinion) but last as long or longer than the SC2 which we previously thought was the best track tire for us. And the F1 3R is less costly than the SC2 which is a bonus! The R888R tires were junk and burned up in chunks at the track.
