  • An industry standard on voiceover -- and a secret-weapon mic on kick drum and bass amps -- the RE20 is a classic cardioid dynamic microphone that's well equipped to handle whatever comes your way. Today, it's up against its "little brother", the RE-320 dynamic mic which is tailored for capturing guitar or bass cabinets, bass drum, and even vocals.

The RE320 is brighter and will work exellent for metal sounds. I'm not into metal and like vintage sounds better so I will go for the RE20, but that's just my taste.

You guys should review the TUL mics. Iron Maiden used them on their last album. Legendary mics from South Africa, would be cool to hear what you guys think about them

RE20 wins for me , Its also what I use in my home studio for my bass. If I want to mid scoop i use a D6

Loved the RE20 on some things but the RE320 sounds just right on more aggressive styles like metal and punk territory.

Definitely preferred the RE320, the added brightness is definitely a good thing, you can always take that off the end result if needed

IMO the RE320 is a better recording microphone for just about any application. The RE20 (and SM7B...ugh) were made for FM radio broadcast - it's why they're voiced like they are. The 320 has more presence and "air". Again, just IMO. I used a 320 for years and only stopped using it when I switched to a condensor so I didn't have to put my face in the mic.

RE320 all day long. Regardless of genre, as soon as you add other instruments on top of a bass all your high end gets completely buried. I play jazz/funk and classic rock and I'm constantly chasing more clarity in my tone, even on upright I'd be choosing the 320 just to get some cut-through.
