best method for rinsing sand is to put in in a bucket and run water so that it over flows. agitate the water until the lighter sand that clouds the water is washed out the top of the bucket and the water turns clear.
I’ve had smaller gravel and sand for my turtles they are 12 years old now. Turtles often eat sand and gravel to help their digestion system. They also eat rocks and sand in the wild. Ofc don’t buy gravel that are too big for the turtle.... it depends on size and so on. But yeah I would also recommend sand. Awesome video!

Thank you for posting this. I was trying to decide what substrate to add to my Arwin's new tank (Arwin in a reeves turtle). I left it bare for a little while, but then I actually found out she was female, so I added sand so that I can see when she starts to burrow. That way I know when to move her to a nesting box. :)
Really helped us out. Turtle is biting sealant in bottom corners we have tried many things to stop him. But he is still biting it. I am going to try putting in some sand with a few large rocks. Loved your video. Very informative. And helped me make my decision.

Was so annoying having to level all the gravel again ..I might try sand ...trail and error
What would you personally prefer as a substrate for turtle tanks with live plants? I am too scared to use gravel in assuming they will swallow it. Hi Valentina! Thanks for watching! What I would do is water column feeder plants (plants that take nutrients from the water), like anubias, java fern, and mosses, and tie those to rocks or driftwood. Hornwort and anacharis can be put in the substrate but are still water column feeders. I have seen people use things like fluorite or eco complete, but I would be very cautious and just know your turtle. If they tend to nose around the substrate, then a coarse sand or river rock would probably be best, because I'm not sure how the fertilizers and trace minerals in the substrate would affect the turtle. If they don't really dig in the substrate then I think you could try a plant substrate. Medium size river rock has potential, because the plants would feed off of the trapped waste. You could try something easy like vallisneria and see how it goes. If you do try root feeders in sand, make sure it is not super fine sand like play sand, because it compacts around the roots and prevents nutrient intake. A coarser sand would work better. Does that answer your question?
Hey the guy at the pet store told me to put 1 KG of shell grit in my tank on top of the sand . Apparently it helps keep the PH above 7 for 3 years , what do you think ?
You can used crushed coral/aragonite to buffer the PH, and it doesn't affect the turtle. Just keep in mind that if you have fish, some don't always do well in the harder water that the shell creates. Also, there is the same concern with gravel if the turtle eats it (unless you have a diamondback terrapin...they actually eat the shell to wear down their beak.) But again, ph and kh don't really affect the turtle, so it isn't necessary either :) Hope this helps!

Yes, I use medium grade. I think I used 1 1/2 bags for a 75 gallon, so I would go with two unless you are okay with a very thin layer of sand. Their are also calculators online for how much substrate you would need to cover the footprint of your tank to a certain depth :)
hi I wanted to get 2 turtles and some neon tetras in the same tank , would a 350l tank be big enough ? I would be getting a loggerhead musk turtle and a yellow bellied slider .

Hi, I’m planning to upgrade my two turtle tanks (bare bottom). Just gotten a large plastic tank, considering to use sand as the substrate, any issue that the turtles will eat the sand?

I would suggest either a musk turtle or a *male* southern or eastern painted turtle (males tend to be a good few inches smaller than females). Hi. When you speak of play sand are you taking about actual play ground sand from home depot or Lowe's? What sand did you use? The black or white ? Where did you get them and can you please give the label info. There are silica sands that cause lung decease in turtles. Don't want that. Thanks for the info in your vid!
Great video! I was thinking of submerging 2 1-gallon fish bowls in my res' tank, and filling them with caribsea eco-complete. I want to plant some val, amazon sword, anacharis, and java fern in them like potted plants. What do you think? Is the eco-compete safe? thanks
as with pretty much any aquarium specific substrate, eco-complete will be safe _so long as the turtle doesn't eat it_ I like the idea of trying potted plants...unfortunately in my experience they will still try to nibble at them! >.
Rn I have my turtle Kookie in a bare bottom tank, I used to have it in gravel rocks but I saw him trying to eat it over and over, I was just so worried for something getting in stuck in his throat etc, and I heard that gravel rocks are also sharp which will cut their throat, I removed it right after I saw him trying to eat it, he just eats anything that comes to his tank😂 he’s happy and healthy now in his bare bottom tank! And it’s the easiest to clean his poop😂
I probably wouldn't do wood as a substrate, especially if you don't know what kind of chemicals that the wood is treated with. Also, certain types of wood naturally release things into the water that can make it unsafe and it can also rot/decay quickly, depending on the type. I would stick with sand or no substrate to be on the safe side personally.

How often do you have to replace the sand?? What brand/type of sand do you use? Learned I can’t use gravel with my baby when she was about 1/2 inch, now she’ 9 inches and when I took her to the vet she pooped out a big river rock!! She really likes scavenging in rocks so I don’t want to have no substrate, but won’t they try eating the sand too?! 😫😫
I haven't really had to replace the sand, but I have used black diamond blasting sand from tractor supply as well as straight up play sand from home depot. The sand is so fine that if they do eat it, it'll pass right through with no problems ;)
Hi been keenly watching your videos for the past couple of weeks now your content is great! 😊 would like to ask would zoo meds eco earth work for a basking area with a mix of pond sand for drainage? I have reeves turtles and would love to give them more of a natural feel and look to there home. Any help would be appreciated 😁😊
Yes, I've seen people use fluorite as a substrate, particularly when doing planted turtle tanks. Just be aware that it usually clouds the water a little bit.
I would love sand in the bottom of my tank I live by a beach and I get most of my sand for free just have to wait for winter the pass but I have my two red-eared sliders in a prefabricated Pond and I have a drilled and hooked up to a Fluval FX4 a huge network of PVC pipes run through where I'm going to be putting the River Rocks I would like sand better but the same would keep getting sucked up into the flu valve filter
Can you please do a video if you haven’t already of a day in your life living with your pets and what you do, so a daily routine of living with turtles and your other pets too
Hi I'm Rose I have 3 turtles 2very large and1not so large. I'm struggling to find a big enough tank for them now they are so big they are all female and the biggest one can be very nasty biting the other large turtle and hurting her any advice will be helpful thank you. Rose
Hi Rose! If they are fighting, you _need_ to separate them right away. They can inflict serious damage on each other. Even if you need to temporarily house the female who is being beaten up in a large plastic storage tote, do so. I would look at either getting separate permanent enclosures or see if anyone is willing to take the turtle in. I'm so sorry, but aggression is not to be taken lightly.
Haha, thanks Kevin, they actually do. Both are above tank basking areas, which means they rest on the top of the tank. You can see them here :) >>> ruclips.net/video/ZjY3DqvNJvc/видео.html
Hi Turtle Girl! I love your set up and hope I can do it, too! You seem to have a very simple clean looking turtle tank for Hoku? not sure if spelled right. I have a Baby Turtle size of a quarter and only eats cooked shrimp for now. Any advice? I have a plastic bin water is low-using distilled water changed daily with separate feeding bowl. When do I go with a deep tank?( maybe using this bin for basking) It is a Male-not sure what kind. I feed the sze of its head 2-3 times a day. Do they sleep in water? I was taking out and putting in bowl of sandy dirt because it burrowed under leaves-but lately he is not liking being taken out of water. I am using a heating pad under bin to try for 78-80 degrees-but, have yet to get a proper thermometer. Feels like warm bath water right now.
You spelled it right :) I would get a real glass fish tank as soon as you can, as I can imagine that the water you are using is getting pretty dirty pretty fast :P Most baby turtles are great swimmers and can handle deep water if you put decorations in the tank...They sometimes sleep in the water, but I would give him a rock or something to get out of the water on his own...moving him around will really stress him out and might be why he isn't eating regular food. I would just be patient with the feeding and work towards setting up a more stable environment for him :)
I bought my turtle eating a mouthful of sand, then a month later when I put him in a separate container for feeding, he pooped out some sand I think(sand was underneath him but wasn’t there before)
Yes, with sand they can usually pass it through, but if your turtle is actively eating sand, I would be very cautious with what substrate you are using and possibly switch to a non-loose substrate such as tile, slate, or bare bottom.
if you message me clear pictures of the turtle's head, shell, and belly, I should be able to help you :) @theturtlegirl on instagram or email theturtlegirl01@gmail.com

The Turtle Girl thank you!! I’m gonna check those stores out and give sand a shot in my tank!
Very nice
My red eared slider eats sand some he throws away is it normal?
Where do you get the sand from? Thanks so much
The black sand is from tractor supply, the play sand is from home depot :D
Dont use sand for gravel because the turtle can digest it and harm them
The Turtle Girl 😊 thank you
8BallPool89 thank you 😊
Also is it okay if we use sand from the dollar store? I saw it there and I got really curious. ty!
Can you make a video on how to set up plants/fish in a turtle tank?
Subbed, liked and ringed the notifications!! No need to thanks me, ur just too awesome
Would it work for a snapping turtle
Oh no. I’ve just bought my common musk turtle and my tank has gravel. I really hope it’ll be ok if I just feed him in a separate container
Can you use the sand from the beach
Nah, I wouldn't since you don't know what kind of organic materials are in there....at least IMO
Is normal that she eats the Little Rocks of the sand or gravel ? It’s (Caribbean sand) and I have a baby red eared turtle... please someone replay :(
What kind of turtle is the one showed in the video??
the dark one is my eastern painted turtle, the lighter one is a diamondback terrapin :)
Thanks
hey turtle friends can someone help me out, will a turtle lay eggs in a gravel substrate if shes in one??
How much gallons is that tank?
Is fluorite good?
Yes, I've seen people use fluorite as a substrate, particularly when doing planted turtle tanks. Just be aware that it usually clouds the water a little bit.
The Turtle Girl thank you 🔥💯😤🐢
I have gravel but I have a very smal tutle so maybe when he gets bigger I’ll do barebottom
Maybe you could use an intake sponge or just not put sand around where the intake pipe is?
I got super course gravel idk if that is good if my turtle accidentally eats it
Can you please do a video if you haven’t already of a day in your life living with your pets and what you do, so a daily routine of living with turtles and your other pets too
I’m mixing river rock and fine sand.
Can I use dollar store sand for the substrate? Thanks
Hey Christine! You _could_ but for the amount you are going to need, you should just get a 50 lb bag at home depot or lowes for about $5 ;)
tysm :D
Looks Good. I Would recommend getting your turtle a space above the water. They’re not fishes and need dry land 2 dry and rest.
Thanks! He actually does, it just sits above the tank, you can see it here. ;) ruclips.net/video/ZjY3DqvNJvc/видео.html
Does sand is suitable for baby turtle
I use both gravel and pebbles
Great setup, but you need a basking spot
Haha, thanks Kevin, they actually do. Both are above tank basking areas, which means they rest on the top of the tank. You can see them here :) >>> ruclips.net/video/ZjY3DqvNJvc/видео.html
May I let you know that you really should have a basking area for your turtle
He definitely has one ;) ruclips.net/video/PKqDvWMO4OM/видео.html
She uses an above tank basking area. I really reccomend it. Leaves alot more space for swimming.
What about organic soil?
I had my mud turtle for years on gravel and never at had a problem
I use river rock with my turtle 😊
If its a baby should you use sand?
Yes, you can still use sand ;)
I bought my turtle eating a mouthful of sand, then a month later when I put him in a separate container for feeding, he pooped out some sand I think(sand was underneath him but wasn’t there before)
Yes, with sand they can usually pass it through, but if your turtle is actively eating sand, I would be very cautious with what substrate you are using and possibly switch to a non-loose substrate such as tile, slate, or bare bottom.
Ok
I have rainbow gravel..it also neon
Is your turtle blue? By the way it look very cute. •v•
Hehe, no but he is white :P
I have river rocks they are absolutely the most easiest one's to clean.
thanks for sharing your experience!
Again ILOVE YOU
What kind of turtle do you have
The dark turtle is an eastern painted turtle and the lighter one is a diamondback terrapin :)
Thanks for the update on my order I have been trying for a hamburger 🍔😄
