You are a life saver. I was sitting here on my third filter that I've purchased in two weeks, which literally is not working for my setup. I was almost in tears trying to figure out how to keep my baby turtle safe. You just answered all of my questions about different filtration and how they work. You've made my choice A LOT easier! You are awesome, ty!
I have my grandturtle this summer, so I've been doing a LOT of YouTubing on care for res. YOU are by far the best. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and explaining things so well.
I know im almost a year late but wow is your channel and this video specifically great! So many videos just say "cotton batting and pot scrubbies", i really appreciate that you showed us how it all works :) working on building a trickle down filter right now
Thank you for explaining. I have a tub setup and thinking of buying canister filter. Now i know it's probably not gonna work because it has to be lower than my tub setup. This video saved my wallet
@@DanTheTurtleMan_ How often do you need to change the water? And how much water do you change each time? I am setting up my tank, so I would like to estimate the maintenance workload. thank you!
I was also thinking of the live plant filter ;) but that’s way inefficient and requires more maintenance as well as lighting and places limits on filter layout. Although, I do have some in my back yard and seems to do well for my outdoor turtles. Powerful video. U have me pumped to do some DIY and make an outdoor tub/pond setup
Shelltastic Jeff M That's awesome thank you!! I'm all about getting turtles outside. I think it's the best things for em :) I'll be getting a 300 gallon pond soon I'll have a video on
Hey Dan, super helpful video! Question, which media so you recommended using for a hang on back filter? I've been using the replacement stuff that comes with the kit I buy, but what do you think is gonna be best? It's a 20 gal tank with one juvenile painted turtle. Thanks so much!
My wife and I are going to be moving our Red Eared Slider Hatchling into a much larger tank than hte one he has now. (40 gallon ZooMed tank we got from Petsmart) I was wondering what your thoughts were on how to go about doing a DIY filter for that setup? I was thinking a three stage system with each stage being in its own 5 gallon bucket. Stage 1- polyester mechanical, Stage 2- Bio Balls or something simillar, Stage 3- charcoal. Let me know what you think, thanks.
Hi I am a tropical fish keeper and I have a musk turtle 🐢 I have a uv steriliser ( vecton uv ) in with my Filtration system will this take anything away from the water that the turtle may need am I best removing my UV sterilising filter or will it be okay I’m so unsure as I’ve never had a musk turtle before thanks
I'm looking at getting a red eared slider or Diamondback terrapin. I dont have much in the way of cash (I'm getting my degree), but I was wondering if I could use an undergravel filter. (I'd obviously need larger stones, not normal gravel) Will that work or do I need to spend the money on a better filter?
Honestly the one thing I wouldn't skimp on is filtration. You can build your own really easily if you need to! Just spend the $20-30 on a pump and work from there :)
I have a hatchling that I wanted to make a smaller outdoor tub for. I was going to have a simple setup since it will grow fast. What kind of filter can I put in a tub outdoors?
hey! i want you to explain to my dad that turtles are very high maintenance pets THAT NEED UV LIGHTING. i ve done my research for five months and my little brother wants one now even though he doesnt know anything about turtles. please help!

I use canister filters on my turtle tanks. They work great for me.
Mrs. Wiggles Wiggles Yeah I just couldn't get mine to work right but I know tons of people have success

Did you have the motor underwater fully?
Between you and Turtle girl I have a great setup for my turtle: Moses
How old is Moses?
Great video about filtration! I found it very informative and educational! Keep up the great work!
Captain Savage Aquatics Thank you!!! New video coming out hopefully tonight 😄
They are so adorable.
Great Video ! But you forgot to talk about box filters with fountain attachment
immediately like the video when he said “hey turtle nerds” :)
I got mad
This is one of my favorite videos

Gorgeous turtles

Hi there! For a hang on back I'd use 100% polyester/filter floss/sponges. It's real cheap from Walmart (it's basically stuffing).
I’m watching this for the first time and you look like a little boy!!!
I was a lil freshman 😭
@@DanTheTurtleMan_ that you were but you taught this old lady a few things THANKS
Im gonna have a center overflow of 1.5 pipe, dropping into a filter sock then through media and pumped back in.

Hey there!! You can keep your UV sterilizer, it should be fine :)
what is in your opinion the best filter media and order to put in the filter
Do a video on the filter in the video please, thank you.

I use freshwater mostly
So helpful for me as a first time owner, you’re gorgeous too which also will keep bringing me back to your tutorials.😍😁⭐️🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🌼🌹
Under cabinet sump and Overhead sumps are the best.
Thank you so much ❤️
Can the output be too strong for a turtle about 2 inches long?
Possibly!!! Observe the turtle and see how well it swims against the current. If it's too strong, lower it :)
Where do you get that nice wood for the tub? I just bought a 100 gallon tub and need wood like that :) Your would would be greatly appreciated.
How do you know when your nitrates are up is there a test
That diy filter, do you have plans or a video how to make that?
Canister Filters are gravity fed
Whats the best filter in that 100 gallan tub
Thanks m8

I have a hatchling that I wanted to make a smaller outdoor tub for. I was going to have a simple setup since it will grow fast. What kind of filter can I put in a tub outdoors?
I usually don't use filters on outdoor tubs for hatchlings tbh! Just add plenty of plants and please be careful of predators!
Hey buddy! Nice video!
Thanks Ed!

What filter is the first one??
What brand filter do you have? I was thinking about getting a tub set up and I really like the one you have
It's a fluval U4! Thanks for watching :)
DanTheGuppyMan thanks! Love the videos!
@@DanTheTurtleMan_ do you use the cartridges or your own media ?
@@simplydavis1658 For the Fluval U4 I use the cartridges. You can definitely use your own media though!
Is there any good internal filter good and powerful?
Fluval U4, I use it on a 75 gallon tub with 3 juvenile turtles and clean it once a week.
I only have a hydroponic filter
If the water gets shot out the wouldn’t it start overflowing and then it would flood?
The water is circulated in the tub!
DanTheGuppyMan oh ok
And which filter is the most useful mechanical or the other one
Both are best!
DanTheGuppyMan do you need both or just one and is eheim brand a good brand for internal filter?
@@sub2elastical488 Eheim is awesome!
DanTheGuppyMan do I need machanical AND biological or just one
DanTheGuppyMan and do I need a uvb light?
I run a filter that cycles my tank 5 times an hour and it keeps my water perfect 🤷🏻♂️
I have mine at 180 g per hour but my mine easily clogs up, so I’m planning on upgrading it for my baby res
my peanut sized brain is still try to process what a filter is
It just takes the poop outta the water :)
which kind of turtle is it? 1:10
Diamondback Terrapin :)
