Interesting about the Elephant's Ear because it's listed as a flesh irritant on a site about box turtles and tortoises--looks like that hasn't been the case with your critters. It's a plant I've passed on for my outdoor enclosure/pond but will now rethink this one. Another great video!
Some turtles (strict herbivores) seems to not have issues if consuming the small amounts like mine do, and some guys feed large amounts to galops and giant tortoises. I’m not suggesting anyone run out and start feeding their turtles elephant ear, but it is something I have here and mine do occasionally nibble on it with no ill effects
I grew alocasia around my pond and my aquatic turtles never ate it. But I rescued a side neck turtle (Indian?) she died and there were large bites in the leaves! Maybe a non- southern species was attracted to it.
Great video! Super informative! I now have a list of plants to take with me to the aquarium store. I want the absolute best for my turtles. And I feel live plants are a big part of that. Thanks for all of the great information! 🐢💦
Orange day-lily is super invasive. I would plant it within a barrier so that it can be removed at some point. Day lilies are native to Asia and have deep system of Tubers that make them very hard to remove without herbicide.
Great video! Your whole yard looks like an awesome turtle zoo. I have learned a lot from your video(s) really appreciate all your knowledge. It sounds like you know just as much about aquatic plants as you do turtles. I will for sure take your advice and buy some plants for our tank. We just got my first turtle - a midland painted - and he or she is doing well. I am attempting to get my tank set up with good filtration and definitely want as many plants as my tank will hold. Right now I have a 20 gallon since the little guy is only 2"+ but will upgrade as needed. Some day I may have the time to make an outdoor pond. What state do you live in? Thanks again, Al
Hey love the videos, do you know anything about spider plants and red eared sliders ? i have so many mixed answers and hard to find anything for aquatic turtles
I love your channel I got a turtle that was abandoned at my door. We set up a lake for the Summer it's about 500 liters and an inside pool for the Winter with uv light basking area. She's a cooter I'm not sure what type she was probably in an aquarium since she grew a lot since she's here.
Interesting video, Greg. I tried to keep hornwort and water lettuce in the tank with my hatchling common musks, but Spocky absolutely destroyed them in two days. I dont mean he ate them, which he did partially, but he chopped up the remaining plants into little pieces. The only thing I keep in there now are fresh lettuce leaves (romaine and green leaf), which Spocky loves to bite perfectly circular holes in, and Marimo moss balls. Spocky tried to eat the moss balls at first, but they dont taste good so now he leaves them alone.
Beautiful setup! Thanks for taking the time to educate the community :) What part of The States do you live in? Do you get cold weather? If so, how do you protect the turtles from the cold?
Really appreciate the video Greg, I asked about the plants because I just got a recuse painted turtle and he is a really picky eater. He is not taking to any sort of turtle pellets or plants. Only thing I have been able to get him to eat are mealworms and I don’t want that to consist of his whole diet. I will definitely be trying some of these natural plants!
Gregs Turtle Haven would you say their diet is about 70% insects and fish and then 30% plants? I might try to give him some feeder fish so his diet isn’t all mealworms
Davis Benn that’s a fair ratio, like most North American aquatic turtles, they will eat a lot of plant matter in the fall before they go down for winter
I’ve been watching your channel for a while now. Is it possible to have a turtle pond for northern states like Illinois. I have a big back yard that I wish I can add something to it. But I am wary about winter time and how those fish and creature can survive the brutal cold.
The problem is with googling if it's poisonous or not, is because you get multiple results, I've been told water hyacinth is great, but also extremely toxic, but you say it's good and I trust you, so I'll go with your judgement sense you're turtles are doing amazing! (p.s. I want those set ups for myself in the future, my goal is to have all my turtles outside, working on making my pond escape proof now, but it'll get there)
Hi there, What plants would you recommend for brackish water? Ideally types of plants that can live in brackish water as well as in freshwater. I've got a couple of gorgeous Northern Diamondback Terrapins and a Common Musk Turtle. So far I only have one type of plant in the Musk tank; Anubias. Tried it in the Diamondback tank as well, but it died.
Thank you for sharing this. I love this video for my Turt-Turt MaGurt 😍 I try get him natural plants he would eat and or want to nest in. Can you do a video on how much shrimp and fish and scuds and crayfish I should let my hatchling eat? I so new it and I am having a bit of time. I am worried I am feeding to much to my baby turtle and my biggest fear is gibing him a bone issue or something. He is 100% wild. He was injured and in my state after 30 days they can nit go back to the wild. Well I can not set it free. I do have a short video up of his habit and him. I think its a him. It was cooler this year in my state and my area.
What do you do with your banana plants and elephant ear? do you leave them outside over winter? Or do you just replace them if they die, I have an elephant ear but I'm debating on putting it outside around my pond cause I don't want it to die.
If I plant an edible plant in the pond, will it be toxic for me to eat? I’m planning to plant water spinach, and put in a cylinder so my turtle can’t eat it.
@@GregsTurtleHaven alright will do i have a screen already made of wire but should i put like actual lile window mesh? And i was thinking of putting him under some stairs is there a certain amount of time they would need in the sun because in my yard the sun goes allday till about 2 then it will be at front and i see with basking bulbs there supposed to be on 12 hrs on 12 hrs off thanks 🐢🐢🙏
I would much rather have four wheelers, fireworks all year and freedom than committees telling people what color they can paint their house and neighborhood fascism. Learn to appreciate it! Progressiveness = frowny face.

The second the video started I literally dropped my jaw. That beautiful, gorgeous, green forest behind you. So so so lovely!’
There’s some beautiful nature out there!
Oh good! Tubs just for growing plants!
Awesome video! Very educational and helpful! Thx for the recommendations!
Thank you so much! I have both aquatic & box turtles and always want to make their home as natural as possible.
the orange flower is a double petaled daylily -totally edible by animal or people--add flowers to salads for some color
I love to eat them!
Great info about the plants greg. Keep it up. Would you do a video about substrates that are good for turtles.

thanks for the suggestions! I made my first indoor pond and I am trying to get water plants for it.
This was very helpful! By the way, what was the music used at the end?
Thanks for sharing the plants for turtles..
Awesome! I live in Kennesaw Ga. Great info for me. Thanks 😊

Awesome--recycling nutrients while beautifying the enclosures!
Thanks for the information. I'm going to try and see if Tortilla likes any of them :)))

Southeast. Everything native and cold tolerant I leave outside year round
The orange flower looks like a Day Lilly, which is edible.

Painted turtles don’t eat a lot of plants, but mine will eat duckweed and amazon frog bit

You don’t mention the oxygenators, like anacharis. Sliders, cooters, LOVE!

We do it in our Ontario Canada weather we bring our critters in for winter's

I’ve never had any problems with water hyacinth whatsoever, so perhaps that’s in reference to mammals..
@@GregsTurtleHaven Didn't really think of that, maybe that is what they meant
If you slice open the hyacinth root-base, it looks like natures version of styrofoam.
what state do you live in because that area looks so beautiful

I have a question..is theirs any turtle predators i should worry about?
Greg, where do you get your Rubbermaid tub? I need some at discount price. Thanks. Love your videos ❤️😘
My Rubbermaid’s are all used. My new Tuff stuff tubs come from tractor supply
My turtles are eating the roots and leaves of my water hyacinth and water lettuce. Any advise?
Really helpful, good going 🙌🙌

great info video (y)

I leave my plants outside, and create a mound of mulch at the base of each to insulate the root, and they come back each year
@@GregsTurtleHaven Ohhh okay I remember you talking about that before, thank you!
I wish i could place plants in my tank, but my muskturtles keep eating/destroying the plants unfortunately
Hi, Greg! Is it possible to keep different musk turtles (commons and razorbacks) in the same aquarium?
You can try, but watch closely for signs of aggression
Good content
It's really good bro🤜
My friend has some lily pads in his pond, would that be edible for cooters?
edit: would it actually be toxic or no?
Lily pads are edible, and cooters would happily eat them all, lol
I made an expensive mistake putting lilies in my pond with yellow belly
If I plant an edible plant in the pond, will it be toxic for me to eat? I’m planning to plant water spinach, and put in a cylinder so my turtle can’t eat it.
Good question I'd be safe then sorry myself. But do some major research. All the best
Lol nice voice crack at 1:57
40yr old man boy 😂
Wow
Jokes on you I’m a plant and a turtle
Hey greg im wanting to pit s turtle outside but im worried about it over heating is there a way to prevent that?
Provide shade either naturally under tree cover or build a top with a screen

I thought elephant ears were toxic if eaten. I was wrong lol!
unorthodox Guardians some species are if eaten in large amounts, particularly to mammals.
You have a chinese golden thread turtle mauremys ?????
No
