😂 how time changes, “im not putting turtles in this pond” fast forward a few years, pond has turtle’s living full time in the pond. Love seeing how things developed.
In aquariums, I’ve had middling success keeping Anubias and Java Fern with aquatic turtles. They’re tougher plants that can be attached to wood or rocks instead of rooted, and the turtles don’t seem to like eating them.
note..not all turtles eat plants... in a pond with low top flow you can keep any floating plant... i had (note have to redo the whole pond) dbts with water heisen (or how ever you spell that) had duck weed had letice had giant val had drawf sag had some stem plants..all did great... key thing to do: floaterS: ADD A LOT OF IT TO BEGIN WITH ROOTERS: MAKE SURE YOU ROOT THEM WELL AND PROTECT THE ROOTS WITH HUGE ROCKS SO TURTLE WOULD SEE NO REASON TO MOVE THEM. Stems: PLANT A LOT AND FAST GROWERS, OTHERWISE DONT BOTHER MOSS: START WITH A TON AND LET IT JUST FLOAT FREE IN THE POND, AND SETTLE SOMEWHERE ONCE IT DOES...NO MATTER WHAT TURTLES WILL DO IT WILL ALWAQYS SETTLE THERE... will be trying lotus this season.
Hmmmm....I have an experiment that could work for keeping algae down...What if we put moss balls into the pond...or strategically places mosses in places of the pond to absorb those extra nutrients so algae wouldn’t grow? Idk
Live your channel, long time Tortoise keeper here from South Africa but now living in Ireland. Waterlilies btw, don't like too much movement in the water and prefer still ponds, you may battle to establish them in the pond with all the water movement.
Gorgeous work on the garden Kenan. I also don’t do video games. By not playing Fortnight, your personal info won’t be leaked. Also your problem reminds me of when my friend’s plants kept dying because her chickens kept eating them. She used a fence but I’m not sure that would work here.
I keep several species of cooters, and use multiple separate grow out tubs for aquatic plants. The added benefit is that these tubs also house and produce live bearing fish, snails and dragonfly larvae in the plants. So, on a weekly basis I distribute plants to cooters, snails and crayfish to my musks, and live bearing fish to each setup to handle mosquitos. Nature does it best! i have a video showing this if anyone is curious
You should consider letting a few basalisk lizards out around the pond and I bet they would stay in the area. It would be awesome to see a lizard run across that pond!
I have a 2500 gallon pond with 10 turtles in it and lots of plants just have to be smart about what kind of plants and wear. Most people don't have Grandis so grasses I find work really well they might chew on a little hear and there but they grow quicker then then can eat them. Also if you keep pond stocked with water lettuce, hyacinth and duckweed the turtles will eat that rather then other plants
I had so much hope for my little musk turtle when I seen the title lol she really does love plants but alas they’ll have to be an occasional treat and not an aquascape 😂😂
Cardinal flowers! That's what you need! A native with beautiful deep vibrant red flowers, are hummingbird nectar plants, and are edible. At least my snails and fish think so. They can grow underwater and above.
I live in Louisiana I made a large outdoor Iguana 🦎 cage out of one of them boat shed by wrapping wire around it my question is can different species of iguana 🦎 Live together???????
Hey Kenan! I've got ponds and no dice on plants BUT, mine do not mess with some marginals like Pennywort, yellow dot and sweet flag. I do Thalia in the water but built a block barricade around it.
I like reading to me but I have a small idea and that's on the edge of your pond where there is big boulders if you can take a second boulder and for a large hole for it and place it over the top of the plan so it comes through the whole it should help protect it from the turtles because they can't get to the inner core of the planet
Maybe put in a more carnivore based turtle like a eastern long neck turtle, as i have one and he does not touch the plants at all. The plants just need a large root structure so when hiding, they don't disturb the plants
You don't worry about the plants. You put them there FOR the turtles. When they eat them, add more plants. Keep a stock tank just for plant propagation.
Wow. Yea they'd tear everything up. I have a potted plant in our little pond with turtles. That's probably the best way to do it. But then your filling the pond.
I The only plant that has survived in my my Cagle Map juveniles is a large Amazon sword. And that's only because it got big enough quickly enough that it can survive the bites they take put of the leaves. They mowed down anubis and anacris.
What about ornamental sweet potato vine? It's super aggressive to the point where my local rabbits can't even keep it down no matter how hard they try.
I my pond are growing plants by turtles but i have only 5 in a realy big pond and i feed em plants to. But my waterlili and waterpest grows like creazy. But on the end i think it works only by a view turtles in a megapond.
Are there any turtles that stay small? My son would like one but we would need one we can keep in a tank. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ♡
You have such a dope setup, I'm beyond jealous. One question though, I know you prob have your property fenced off and what not but do you ever get stray, snakes, turtles or even gators into any of your ecosystems?
You definitely arent the only one not playing fortnite and im sooo with you on the arkham asylum game, it is amazing, have you played arkham city its the one after asylum ive found its better, if your a fan of batman i highly recommend watching gotham on netflix also sorry for such a long comment. How come you dont have any small aquatic turtles such as musk turtles or red eared sliders i know they are an invasive species in florida so you’d be doing a good thing taking some in and rescuing them
'floating cattail bowls" in the main pond? Can they eat hydrilla? Although, that species is a nightmare in too many places. What population of turtles does the many pond hold?
you could get some bichirs to go in the rec pond they do date back to dinosaur times after all they also breathe air from time to time so despite being a bottom dweller you will see them and they will deffinately help in controlling the cichlid numbers as they are predators. Bichirs are also tough as knails and have thick scales they are all large with the average size for the smaller species being around 11 to 12 inches and the biggest species exceeding 30 inches due to their hardiness they can take pH's anywhere from 8 to 6 and temperature wise they are best kept at anywhere from at the minimum of 22 degrees celcius (71.6 Farenheit) to about at the recommened max of 26 degrees celcius (78.8 farenheit). Some interesting facts are; a Scientist was able to rear some P. senegalus completely on land by keeping their enclosures moist enough, they as I have already said can breathe air not just through their mouths but spiricles located on the rear of their heads, they have poor eye sight but great senses of smell, they will shake and even death roll like a crocodilian when tearing chunks of meat from food items to big to swallow, when they hatch for the first few months or years of their lives they have external feather gills like Axolotols as their primitive lung like organ has not yet developed, they can through my own personal experience develope owner recognishion, they come from Africa and SOME may coexisted with some African cichlids but I would not take my word for that as I am a little unsure myself, one thing is IF you do decide to get some for the rect pond or any of your amazing aquascape ponds I would recommend adding more fully aquatic plants and some rock structures to make the bichirs feel more secure and less likely to potentially jump out of the bond and go walkies round the kamp, they are egg layers and do raid nests of other egg laying fish, Bichirs are mainly nocturnal but when they are young do spend a lot of time foraging for food both equaliy at night and day, Bichirs despite their predatory nature are actually generally very peaceful fish and spend most of their time hiding away in any spots they can usually in small dog piles with other Bichirs, the only forseeable issue I can see with putting them in the rec pond is the Oscars but im sure the rec pond has more than enough space and hiding places for the bichirs to get away from the Oscars if they start to harass them.
i must add that they are escape artists so they may not be the perfect choice but considering the size of the pond i don't see why they would have any need to jump out of the pond
Yo bro u missing on part of best back yard pound salmon berries put em close to enclose they grow good next to pounds and rivers no where else and taste good and fish turtles ect that's they fruit natural falls into tank and u get snack to and in some enclosureds like tourtiouses put an apple tree ect some will natural fall and u get food to and animals make natural fertilizer that u have natural in ground there
