Up north, what should one do during the winter? I just found this awesome little dude and it's almost October and I'm off grid. I think if I let him go hes gonna become food, and I would like to keep him. Any advice? Thank you and awesome video!
We found turtle eggs in our compost 2 months ago. We left it alone and put a cage around the nest. Today, we found 4 baby snapping turtles so far. Pretty cool looking turtles.
Brilliant Thank you so much for the video. I found a baby snapper yesterday that didn’t look like he would make it. I purchased a small tank and this morning he seems to be doing better, and now I can follow your advice and give him a safe place until I can release him.
I remember rinsing gravel for my turtle pond. I made a 300-gallon pond by myself and dug gravel from our road then rinsed it in 5-gallon buckets. it took a while!
I've actually found a baby snapping turtle a few houses a way, in the middle of the path a few years back. Cute as heck, but I let him go back after pointing him a way from the street. Hope he's still growing and getting big.
I love the great habitats you create for your turtles and tortoises. I'm sure they are quite happy and enjoy them. It looks like these projects are so rewarding to do, and we get to learn from them, and enjoy the process, too.
This is the exact video I needed. I’m trying to sort out a way to sort a stock tank for a baby snapping turtle i’m getting in a month, and this will help a lot.
@@SergioHernandez-su2mr you can try to find a reptile expo nearby. That’s what I did,. If you can’t find one then go a website like backwater reptiles, but I don’t know how reliable they are.
Awesome enclosures you make, I wish that some day I have that much space so I can build some stuff like you do. Really enjoying your vids since I found your channel. Greetings from Mexíco
made that mistake once with a 75 gallon fish tank... Didn't clean the gravel enough was a mess twice the amount of work doing all the water changes till i got it clean. Just forgot to do it that one time.. wont forget ever again ! haha
I have 2 baby common Florida snappers , they are both about a month or 2 old . Can I keep them together in a 20 gallon long aquarium with 2 hiding spaces and some plants . If so , how long will they be able to be together till I have to separate them?
I love your videos, you have given me great insight on how to care for snapping turtles. I have a question for you about my baby alligator snapping turtle. Some background first. My brother in law brought this turtle home right before winter last year. His intention was to grow the turtle and then cook and eat it. I told him he was nuts then took the turtle from him. I kept the turtle because of it being close to winter. I have cared for the turtle since then. I kid you not , I watch tv and my turtle lays on me and takes naps. So he/she is tame and not showing aggression. It is now starting to warm up here in Missouri, and I wish to put this turtle back in the wild. Where is the best place to release an alligator snapping turtle? Pond, lake, river? I want him to have the best chance for survival. He was the size of a half dollar, now his shell measures about 5 inches across. Is he large enough for release or should I keep him/her another year and then release to insure his survival in the wild? I would greatly appreciate your advice, or a link that can help guide me.
Great video! Do you have to heat the water for Snapper hatchlings? I apologize if you covered that in this video and I missed it. . . I was watching with my kiddos.
Must be a awesome video if it's got 10 likes before it premieres. The anticipation is killing me I might not be able to sleep. (Jk tho all his videos are awesome)
Hey Greg - will you be able to keep them together for life or do you plan on separating them eventually? So much information online is different than what I see you and some of the other big turtle keepers do, and what you guys are doing is obviously working very well and you always seem to put the animals first.
Use long tongs and hold up in front of him and also crickets they seem to like, plus full of calcium and protein. Also my little guys really love duckweed I leave it in there tub all the time and they Mack it all day.
Provide some natural type of cover. Many baby cooters won’t eat unless they feel safe and camouflaged. Provide some real or artificial floating plants and try small worms as previously said, and small pellets
Okay, actually like 2 hours after I commented he started to eat and he is basking. He has a lot of moneywort and water lettuce, and I will add more. Thanks for the tips.
Idk what to do I got a baby common snapping turtles I tried feeding it dried river shrimp turtle pellets live mealworms and mini krill and he didn’t eat any of it
Greg do you worry about the gravel getting ingested by the baby snappers? I have always kept mine in bare bottom enclosures, but have wanted to have a substrate for plants like Amazon Sword or Java Moss. Also I was so excited to watched this because I thought you had baby alligator snappers. Lol
Not worried at all. Turtles can naturally pass gravel as long as they have a natural diet. Turtles suffering from impaction are heavily fed pellet diets, which clogs the digestive system. I’ve never had a turtle with impaction in over 30 years of keeping
@@GregsTurtleHaven I have been keeping turtles and koi for about the same amount of time, I have just always worried about it because it was something I read once. I am building a 22x36 building for an indoor turtle pond of 8,000 gallons and several small 100 gallon enclosures. I will continue to keep my twenty 125 gallon aquariums with turtle toppers in the house. The reason for the building is I want a pair of alligator snapping turtles like you have.
@@GregsTurtleHaven i just drove a longggg way to lowes and thought i could pick up any sand. which i think i can. it says it contains quartz and crystalline silica. these are both obviously natural, but are they safe?? ive washed the sand
Nice! I'm thinking of getting at least 1 type of snapping turtle when i get my tank and supplies to keep tank animals. I don't really know if I should get a hatchling common snapper though as they're ACTIVELY AGGRESSIVE... they hunt their food! So if a frog or salamander would swim passed them, they may get killed. Maybe even the other turtles in the setup, smh.. I was thinking about hopping up 3 steps and getting a hatchling alligator snapper, but they're boring. Usually just sit around you know? Not as fast as the common I guess.. what do you suppose I do??
i have a baby snapper with a baby painter and honestly they act like best friends. the little painted stands on the snappers back for air half the time. and where ever the snapping turtle is i can always know the painted is right next to him. the painted has only been bit once and that was for trying to steal the snappers food but he learned real quick not to steal food🤣🤣🤣
@@phoneusandfroboof829 - any update on how they've done together? Looking to setup another turtle tank for my kids and was curious about mixing the Snapper with the others (slider/painter).
I have been horrified of the sound common snappers make because when I was younger I was wading in this pond in Missouri and I heard that noise and then a basking snapper took a chunk out of my ankle
I dont know if this us true or not but i read somewhere (im new to turtles) that the water shouldnt be any deeper than their shell edges, but i see you built yours with alot of water can anybody help me? I have 33 baby snapping turtles thanks to my girlfriend wanting to keep them all

What did you ever do with them ?
I found a snapping turtle in the middle of the night in Minnesota that measured 3 feet from head to tail. Absolute unit.
She was incredible! I hope she was able to lay her eggs. The largest I've seen locally in last couple of years was around 1 foot shell size.
Brilliant

50 seconds and waiting for this to start !!!
What about filtration? Wouldn’t the bio load from two turtles foul up that water quick? If no filtration, then how often do you do water changes?
love your videos..
Hi at what age do you separate the snappers or do you have a gallon amount per adult that’s ok to house them together?
Would you recommend fresh water for the start up or can I just use the water from my hose? Thanks for the video 💯

Extra small meal worms. Alive so they can wiggle
