1974 was really the last good year for the Firebird. There was the Formula 455 and you could get it with functional hood scoops. The Trans Am had the 455 but non functional reverse hood scoop. Noise pollution laws, go figure. But the 455SD could be had in both the Formula and Trans Am. Rated at 290hp it was down 20hp from the previous year. After 1974 the Firebirds got a huge catalytic convertet and no dusll exhausts just chrime exhaust tips. The 400 was rated at 185 and in the summer of 1975 Pontisc brought back the 455 rated at around 210 hp and could only be had with a four speed.

74 is a great year for pontiac. Prior to smog bs, and still a good compression ratio. The super duty is considered the last true muscle car of the era. The engineers at pontiac totally slipped the SD past the pencil pushers at GM.

Pontiac never really made a big Block engine they used the 326 block up to the 455

I had a 76 same vehicle, it was a 400cu.in though, sold it for $600 in 1980, here in the U.K.!!!

d -port 4 bbl Pontiac's are still high-po .Big 2.11 intake 1.66 ex. , with a.c & tall gears and it will still do sub 15 sec. 1/4 mile .
Last year for real dual exhaust.. Rase the compression ratio. Put a Elderbrock 750.
