I joined the army to fight when I was 15, and finally I returned home at my 80s.

The neighbour says: The tombs there, surrounded by pine trees and cypresses used to be your house.
When I take a closer look, I find that hares go in and out through holes left for dogs, and pheasants take off from the roof.
In my yard grew the wild millet, and on my well sprouted the wild mallow.
I cook some meal with the millet and mallow, a bowl of rice, and soup.
The meal is done, but there is nobody I can share it with!
I walk outdoors, and my tear drops on my clothes when I'm staring at the east.
This is my own work of translation :) maybe there are some minor mistakes but generally I think you can understand what the poem tries to express: the horror of war and the terrible pain that ordinary people suffer.
In this poem, the scenes of war are not mentioned, however, the author uses a veteran's story to show us how lasting wars and military service system in ancient China destroys people's happiness.

this poem is supposed to be sad because it was written in the perspective of an ordinary veteran. During the collapse of Han Dynasty, many males were forced to join the local military and it was very common that other warlords burned or captured their hometowns before these peasants returned to their hometowns.

This article describes the tragic scene of an old soldier who was homeless after returning to his hometown, and exposed the suffering caused by the military service system to the working people at that time.
in case anyone wonder what the poem is talking about. Here is a very rough translation. I most definitely got a few lines wrong since I haven't studied old Chinese since first grade middle school. And yeah... don't expect me to actually translate it into a poem either since I'm not a poet.

On the way (I) meet people from my home town: (I) ask who is left in my family?
Looking at my home from afar, pine trees grow atop of countless graves.

1:32 I love how Guan Yu knowingly and habitually puts out his arm to stop the predictably brash Zhang Fei. It is such a small detail lasting for less than a second but it tells so much about their brotherly relationship and goes to show that the devs have done their research - they know their stuff.

So I am not the only one that noticed the characters closely resembled the DW 4/5 characters - before Koei turned them into young boys and dragqueens. I kinda liked that style. But considering it plays during the time of the warring states after the shattering of the alliance versus Dong Zhuo... the title is a little bit misleading.
My thoughts exactly, funny how you mention 5, Dynasty Empires 5 was the last Dynasty Warriors titles I threw hours down on.
As for the title, I think it's about taking the broad approach. It seems this won't be flirting with the Yellow Turban Rebellion earlier either.

I think its almost impossible to modulate big cities but section sieges would be cool, llike you fight for the walls the you atack the low city the upwards and up till you reach a last stand for the defenders
Unfortunately Chinese cities were designed mostly with 1 main defensive wall. And Naval battles will be likely on river instead of sea(ish) environment like what we have in Rome2 and Attila.
:/ if im not wrong the chinese city walls is quite huge and if needed they heavy fortified the choke point , i think they will bring back full scale city battle

Yeah, it's a real shame. I hope they do more with Three Kingdoms in the future. The art style they chose was so nice, and it had really great campaign mechanics. I just wish the battles weren't so bland.
If they just use shogun 2 battle engine. The current new Warhammer engine is better for big monster fight, but very bland when it comes to realistic Infantry battle. Shogun 2 has the most perfect battle engine in Total War game and I don't understand why no other see it

The poem essentially depicted a 80-year-old veteran conscript returning home to an empty house and tombs of all his loved ones. His house abandoned for so long that wild grain and vegetable grow around it. The veteran collected the wild grain and vegetable for cooking, but when done, he realized he has no one else to call for a family meal. The veteran crys to the thought and wets his clothes with tear. Below is the original text (in SC font since more ppl can read it).

You can tell Total War: Warhammer has boosted some much needed funds into CA. Total War Britannia, Three Kingdoms, as well as all the support for Warhammer 2. They've really stepped it up a notch!

I have stated since Shogun 2 (2011) that Total War needs to do a game on Ancient China. I argued the Official Forums, Commented on Videos and told all my friends the merrits of such a game for years. I can't help but this is in a small part a fruit of my labors. It's an exciting period. And not a well understood one by the masses. How many Total War games have quoted Sun Tzu all the while never being represented by one of the great Grand Strategy Franchises in PC Gaming.

This literally make me cry, as my childhood grew up with Romance of The Three kingdoms from KOEI back in 1992, and makes me read the novel, to learn more about three kingdoms period, and as long time fans of total war series since shogun 1, this one is like dreams come true!!!!

Coincidentally, the ROTK drama made in 1993 from China was broadcasted in my ctry around that period.I was hooked in the story for quite a no. of yrs.

Cao Cao can´t be wiped out before of the battle of Chi Bi otherwise there would not be three kingdoms. I agree that Wei (after Chi Bi) can be wiped out and Jin won´t exist If so. But I guess that we´ll have to wait until the game´s release to confirm it.
During my youth, I played almost all the Dynasty Warrior games, it was my life, from those games I learned so much about the war of the three kingdoms and it is an epic tale indeed, now my all time favourite strategy game franchise is teaming up with my favourite game of my childhood, or the story at least. Yes i just came in my pants.
I know it's an art design thing but I love how a western developer makes the Chinese Look more Asian than Dynasty Warriors ever did.

I'm just glad Lu Bu actually looks closer to his age. He was older than both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei in the epic yet Dynasty Warriors made him look younger. Both Romance of the Three Kingdoms (1994) and Three Kingdoms (2010) TV series also had younger actors play him...
The art design of Dynasty Warriors has been greatly influenced by Anime culture in Japan.
The reason behind that is, 1. animes don't always tend to follow the rules of reality 2. In Japan, a large percentage of young people (the people primarily portrayed in lifelike animes) have dyed hair to colors that are either light brown, blonde, and reddish brown. 3. A number of animes portray western themes, concepts, and characters (even when in a Japanese setting) hence they would include characters with visuals akin to western looks 4. Japanese hair (like most east Asian hair) isn't black, it's dark brown with reddish tints running through it, hence the more common brown hair you see in animes.
Problem is they tend to overdo the asian and end up a really stereotypical extreme, even if there are people who do look like them, does not necessarily mean everyone looks like that...
as a Rome total war fan and player since 2005 and a dynasty warriors player from ps2 (first game dynasty warriors 3), i gotta say....i LOVE this.

I dont know how theyre going to interpret the heroes. Lu Bu had to be captured while he blacked out drunk, cause in lore he was a one man killing machine.
Zhang Fei was killed in his sleep, cause he was held a bridge single handedly against Cao Cao's pursuit forces.
Xiahou Dun took an arrow into his eye in the middle of battle, pulled out said arrow with his eye and ate it, before yelling at his men to continue the charge.

That was because that was how sieges were laid out in TT (and the AI could actually handle the tactics of 1-sided sieges somewhat). Hopefully, with a new engine, CA can make siege battles (we already know they will be 360 masterpieces like the once were due to a blog post) with the AI fun and interesting

No one said there would be a new engine. This is most likely made with warscape like every total war since Empire.
The simple sieges were just a balance for flying units, so we should get the normal sieges now that we’re historical again.

The only minor critique/nitpick I have for this trailer is the scene with Cao Cao. Since this happened during the time Dong Zhuo had the young emperor, Cao Cao is still only a minor minister/warlord and would most definitely NOT have an actual palace with dragon coiled pillars. It would have been more fitting if he went inside an army camp.

That sequence at the end is straight from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. When Lu Bu (who serves the fat guy), appears for the first time to the Three brothers (the spear, glaive and sword), Zhang Fei the spear guy charges first but gets stomped. The glaive, Guan Yu, then runs to gank Lu Bu and also gets stomped. Even when the sword, Liu Bei, joined in it was a stalemate. Love that nod to the lore CA!

Fulbert Teh Yeah. Officers always fought from horseback. Lu Bu was given the most famous horse of the time, the Red Hare, by Dong Zhuo in order to get him to kill his adopted father and join Dong Zhuo. Guan Yu is later given that very same horse after Lu Bu's execution. So yeah, they show be on horses and their duel happened before the battle and Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Liu Bei were young men at this time. Other than that it looks awesome.

Daniel Roach Cao Cao is most likely the one leading the army. The one who you first see moving the pieces on the map table. He was instrumental in starting the coalition again Dong Zhuo but Yuan Shao was the elected leader of the coalition. Yuan Shao is less interesting and over all less important than Cao Cao. So its understandable they would highlight him instead.

+HForHavoc I'm equally as excited. I have longed for a TW game based in China. China is one of the most fascinating countries with the most fascinating history. China and Japan, can't get enough of both. I was hoping so much the next TW is gonna be China or Japan again. I'm so damn glad.
Day 1 if it's not like TW: Warhammer and is more RTS than before. One of my big hopes is for them to not make it too specs heavy. They can't continue going up as it looks. There are only a small percentage of people who can play TW:W at 60fps 20vs20 at ultra size. There are so many who simply don't have a beast of a PC and the thousands od dollars to adapt for one single game. The load time hurts if you don't put the game in a SSD, but doing that on a SSD containing your OS is the worst thing you can do.
You would kill your SSD in 2 years depending on how often you play TW games. Regarding the fps thing again, I don't care as long as a game is a stable 30fps but TW is never a stable game. Lack of optimizations and the constant ups and down in demand makes it impossible to make it stable enough, unless you lower the unit sizes, graphics and other settings while also locking your own fps in the process.
Some will argue they want CA to make it even more spec heavy but know that you are in the minority.

The duel part at the end of this trailer comes from a quite famous scenario called "three heroes fight against Lu Bu" in the Romance of Three Kingdoms, so I think it's more likely a highlight thing instead of CA really making multi-combat animations in actual game.
