Mr Yunus is going to be the new head of state in Bangladesh. Let him rule over Bagladesh and show that peace and stability returns. Being an intelligent and patriotic person, he will do his best. He may not survive for more than 2- 3 years. Sri Lanka managed to roll back quickly and returned to the ways of peace on their own. The onus is as much on the citizens as it is on the new leadership. So far so good. Bangladesh cannot be equated with SL. Cause and source of the trouble lie elsewhere. Leaving little scope for any leadership to take control and roll back successfully. Like with the individuals, every country chooses it's destiny. Wanting to be democratic and becoming democratic are two exclusive realities. Holding fresh free and fair elections and forming a new govt is just a beginning. Democracy is to be achieved by the people and the govt, hand in hand. When citizens are willing and are able to live according to the ways and needs of democracy then democracy becomes reality. Most countries who wished to become democratic have failed or they are forced to be satisfied with mock democracy which is more of autocracy with just a symbolic resemblance to democracy. That ultimately is worse. Autocracy is easy and convenient to the leadership. Democracy is difficult to digest and to follow for the people, in reality. Democracy demands genuine tolerance and level playing in all walks of life and in all matters of governance. Democracy has a good chance of success even when the two conditions are not met 100% but able to comply with atleast 60 to 70% of the time and occasions. Success of Democracy is the proof that people are democratic in the first place. Mostly the lure of democracy is used by the vested powers, internal or external. It is used to distract the people, even when they are better off. People are lead to think that lack of democracy alone lies at the root of all their miseries and misfortune. They may realise their mistake, if at all, only after their attempt to establish democracy has failed. Many societies are inherently incapable of being or becoming democratic. May the peace return to Bangladesh sooner than later. Good luck to Democracy in Bangladesh.
You remove a so called democratically elected dictator and then you select some one to run a country . Now explain how that is not a dictatorship . Yonis is a money lender who sucked people blood . Check the reports how much interest he used to charge his lenders who were all small businesses
The tentative names of the 15 members of the BANGLADESH interim government has been announced after Dr Md Yunus's arrival at Dhaka from Paris. The list included names of eminent educationists, jurists, bankers, foreign policy bureaucrats, Human Rights activists, besides 2 of the most prominent student leaders who led the movement. The team also includes women, at least 2 from the minority communities, and others from special groups. Significantly, as insisted upon by the student leaders, no representatives from any of the existing political parties were inducted.
Best wishes to all of you. It's time to establish a new, people-centric, and inclusive government. I have no doubt that Hassena was leading an unpopular and authoritarian regime. While she may have been the cause of the conflict, I also believe that those advocating for equal rights could have shown restraint and prevented chaos. Creating a corruption-free country based on human rights principles is challenging due to the nature of power, but I hope for the establishment of a model democracy.
Rashna Imam is RIGHT.....I have several Hindu friends who live in the country with their families. None of them has experienced any attack of any sorts. Awamelegue is the main culprit in scaring off people and also tries to get India involved negatively in Bangladesh by the trick of fear mongering. We do love our Hindu community.
Her words reminds me of what we hear in India - destruction of institutions, no space for dissent, persecution of political opponents, intolerance , fascist nature of the regime etc. Is the incidents in Bangladesh a warning to PM Modi?
In India, only the opposition feels suffocated as they keep losing under Pappu's leadership and try silly protests here and there. The Hindu professional middle class and the business community are solidly with BJP and hate regressive leftists and mullahs.

The rot seems to run deeper than what this conversation brings out. The new rulers are riding the tiger which has tasted the blood. It will be a tough job to dowse the pent up rage that is playing out on the streets.Bangladesh will be in deeper trouble if the economic drift is not checked given that the economy is more integrated into the global system. Also, more crucial is what BNP and Jammat are upto. Taslima Nasreen's statement gives a sense of crises that lay ahead. She said : “Hasina in order to please Islamists threw me out of my country in 1999 after I entered Bangladesh to see my mother in her deathbed and never allowed me to enter the country again. The same Islamists have been in the student movement who forced Hasina to leave the country today.”
Barrister Rashna articulated very nicely and please note that for the destruction of our democracy Indian establishments vividly supported Skeikh Hasina against the people of Bangladesh.
Thank you Wire for bringing us one of the best and objective discussions. Thank you to Barrister Rashna Imam for explaining the nuances of a very complex situation. From Bangladesh
Election Commission,ED,CBI,Courts ‘Accountant General of India’ Union Public Service Commission etc should arrange debates and discussion with media and academics to share as to whether they are up to their mark and not scared of the political masters.
That waa a wonderful interview Sidharth. Rashna Imam was at her best. She very well articulated the crisis in BD. Hats off to you both for such a wonderful interview.
Bangla deshi students who lead this movement must form an association that keeps a close eye on the governments in the future. Such association can be like Association democratic reforms, and this association should be registered with the systemic rules and financed by the government.
Very simplistic presentation. If the students demands were somewhat resolved, why were they still on the streets.Firing was done because they did not heed the curfew.Would the soldiets have gone to the students students and embraced them with flowers. The Wire should understand that governing a nation is not romantic idealism
Shekh Hasina’s Party must be given some participation. Let the people of Bangladesh Deshdecide who they want to elect in a general election. If that party is left out, that action would be discriminatory too. Give them a chance to improve their actions and thinking.
Did the Awami League govt annihilate their opponents physically during their long rule or misrule? That govt must have been authoritarian and corrupt in many ways, but was there no constitutional way to remedy the situation?
An independent judiciary is no guarantee that an unpopular opposition like the Jamaat & BNP can’t accuse them of bias and then storm streets. In India we see it everyday that Opposition is accusing judiciary of bias when ever the judgements go against them.
In many different cities in Bangladesh large procession of Hindus against vandalism in their properties. Dhaka, chittagong, Borguna etc. Now call these ' fictional '!! 😮
What do you say about the display of undergarments of the ex-PM? Is that also a part of revolution? Would the country have been born without Mujibar and India? You should have semblance of gratefulness for Mujib as well as for India.
After every revolution there is some chaos. Compared to most revolutions and the after math of revolutions, Bangladesh did tremendously well. And hate towards Mujib is justified, because he behaved just like Hasina before he died. And, this generation of Bangladeshis have zero respect for Indians for good reasons. Fix your foreign policy, fix your big brother like attitude. Then we may talk.
Every word of what barrister Rashna Imam said is the brutal reality happening inside Bangladesh. Every Bangladeshi except a few blind Awami League beneficiaries will agree with her statement. Most importantly, we Bangladeshis are lucky that Dr. Mohammad Yunus has accepted the offer to head the interim government of Bangladesh. For almost 15 years, the dictatorial Hasina government took away the freedom to speak or write. In her fall, the people of Bangladesh got a taste of the second freedom. She is not only herself or her father hated by the people, she buried the whole Awami League party and fled the country.
Siddhartha... While I completely agree that AL was running an autocratic regime, you have not pushed enough on the question of secular stature of Bangladesh. It has been eroding very fast and now there is a high risk that erosion will further accelerate, unless it has not been put under checks by upcoming new Bangladesh govt. This can't be expected from major political parties BNP and Jamat. I don't see that any political alternate exits. So there is a political void for upholding the secularism of Bangladesh.
You can not put fingers to Jamat which is not in major political scenario. When India is running by RSS inspired BJP by three consecutive times, then Jamat context is null and void.
@@jaibhaumik5971 Hi, I'm from Bangladesh. I agree with your observation that the secular stature of Bangladesh is pretty questionable and there has been a rise of Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh for the last decade or so. What my Indian friends fail to realize is that much of it can be blamed on the Hasina regime and the policies her government has taken over the years. One of the reasons she managed to stay in power for this long is that she has somehow established herself as the sole trusted ally for Delhi in Bangladesh and that beyond her are all Islamists and anti india forces. Her regime saw the most growth of Islamism in our history. There has been quite a lot of cases of attacks on minorities during her rule and many of them have been made possible due to her policies. Recently she has built 300 mosques funded by the government. She has been recognised as "Qoumi jononi" by the ulema for her role of promoting the religion of islam.
In an autocratic environment, fundamentalism often becomes the language of protest. In a democratic and open society, fundamentalism stays on the fringe if not completely vanish. Hasina told India what it wanted to hear. She used India's blind spot to her advantage.
@@None-self If there was no jamaat type ideology RSS type would not even have been born, it is completely the fault of chuslamists for not integrating into India completely and still hanging onto majoosi culture.
The same power vacuum and no opposition that AL enjoyed during the last 15 years, will be now enjoyed by BNP-Jamat. Many extremist symbols slowly started to show up across the country as well.
@@md.arifurrahman8675 I was never part of any political party. Every educated and sane person knows that everything would become same if BNP rule without any competition. What about you ?? Are you a jamat supporter?? say it.. are you ashamed of that?? Are you looking for the establishment of a Islamic state under sharia law... Say it..
My question is to Madam Rasna, how did this Awami League government win the election when it first came to power? Was it the responsibility of the election? Before 15 years, has the right election in Bangladesh? So fifteen years ago everything was fine in Bangladesh? It would be nice to get the answers to the questions.
The 2008 election was fairly ok and I personally think that reflected people's choice but 2014, 2018, 2024 elections were rigged. Right before the 2024 election hasina govt. started mass arresting leaders of opposition parties (mostly BNP) so that they can't participate in the election to begin with. Hasina controlled the judiciary system and appointed the justices at the highest court. You are free to imagine the rest of the scenario.
There's a wide spread anti-India feelings and mistrust against India in Bangladesh. I can list some reasons: 1. India wanted a party or person to lead BD who is friendly towards India and it was Awami League of Sheikh Hasina. India is seen as a collaborator to autocratic rule of Hasina. 2. India as a big country played a big brother role and BDs had some kind of jealousy and hatred towards that big bully. 3. India had been extracting lot of benefits from BD like railway corridors from West Bengal to Tripura through BD without giving any such reciprocating benefits to BD. BD wanted a road corridor to Nepal for it's economic & commercial benefit which was a matter of 18kms distance, but India didn't extend this to BD. 4. Farrakka and Teesta water was another issue, which BD wanted for their agriculture and irrigation but India didn't relent to their demands. 5. Modi's Anti Muslim stance in India starting from Babri Masjid demolition to recent spate of lynchings, beef ban, discrimination against Muslims etc left a negative impact against India amongst BDs. 6. There had been widespread rumours in BD that Hasina's inner core of security is manned by India's RAW, which could be true as her father was assassinated by BD army generals & she has deep distrust on her own army but relied on India, fanning more hatred towards India. 7. Indian products from as simple as Match boxes to Heavy machineries were flooding BD and general perception was that they became a colony of India. 8. Hasina was seen as a puppet of India and when she turned unpopular in the country, India became unpopular as well. 9. The list can go on, but these I feel are major reasons for "deep hatred" among BDs towards India. India shouldn't interfere in the recent political developments in BD but should play the role of a friend, advisor and falicitator in peaceful transition of power in BD.
India was never a big brother or boss, India has been tolerant to all and no matter how much we bend before )them(, their jealousy is always high towards us. We have nothing to apologize for.
You forgot the tenth point, India has hindus and no matter how good india is towards you , you will still hate it because of its rich ancient tradition which you don't have obviously.
@@captainjackuniversal : We have no reason to hate India because of it's rich ancient tradition. Keep your 'rich' Indian tradition to yourself. Present day India, Pakistan & Bangladesh were all part of that 'rich' tradition. Due to political reasons these are three different nations now, but otherwise the tradition that you talk about is shared & common. 2ndly, if you are talking about the 'rich' Indian Hindu tradition, we are fortunate that we don't have the repressive caste system of this 'rich' tradition that denigrates humans and humanity.
@@muramatafamily6521 Denigrating Humans and Humanity based on personal religious beliefs and branding them as unbelievers and harassing them is the hallmark of the desert cult. Tribalism, ethnic casteism including ajlaf altaf ajam pasmanda etc, lianguage imperialism and denigrating people by birth and discriminating against other relixions is part of the desert cult too. Hatrd towards India is because Hindus are doing very good in every sphere while protecting their identity in modern age and that is the sole reason for intense jealosy by followers of a particular desert cult.
True on "fear mongering" as an active notion in Bangladeshi politics ever since 1971....with us or against us....but "fear mongering" in Bangladeshi political context is not brandable to any one political "mover and shaker". As a corporate lawyer you understand it and you deal with it daily.
The political culture of a country is very important, Most of the people are religious and dogmatic, most of the people are concerned about religious ideology instead of political ideology, They have a state religion as if the state ought to be governed by religious prescriptions , I don't ever heard of a democracy having a official language of a state , A democracy with a recognised State religion hardly claim to be a Democratic country

Yes, articulation of lies ! 😅

Thank you Barrister Rashna Imamfor presenting an exact picture of Bangladesh.
Siddharth is not fluent in English. He should improve it to the level of his loyalty to the west.
Will this people's power consider the rise of urgency in the North East, in the absence of Sheikh Hasina?
Look forward to the 'JAMAAT RATE OF GROWTH'

Whatever may be the reason, it was very sad indeed to see the demolition of the statue of the founder of Bangladesh.
There's a wide spread anti-India feelings and mistrust against India in Bangladesh.
I can list some reasons:
I'm not expert in India,Bangladesh relations but I think you made some very valuable points.

She must be put on trial, may be in absentia.

Soon Bangladesh will going to be another Pakistan.
These so called High level discussion wont help Bangladesh. It's gone
Salute to Sidharath and Rehana Imam.
Very proud of Barrister Reshna Imam who spoke so well on the issues discussed in the interview except her repetition of the phrase "last fifteen years". Above all, she was sharp like a razor blade!
I thought she was very mediocre.
@@captainjackuniversal Rashna's sister in law is married in the ousted Sheikh family! [Where is the hugely corrupt and now 'wanted' in Bangladesh Mr Sheikh Selim ( Hasina's first cousin, her party leader AND Rashna's sister in law's father in law) hiding Rashna? did you ask your sister in law? We know you are in good terms!] Albeit Rashna is married to an opposition activist Bobby (!), her brother in law Zubi Musa, a lawyer, is a strong ally of the fallen Hasina regime too having been involved in all sorts of widely known criminal activities backed by the regime! Let me not start with Rashna's father in law > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moosa_Bin_Shamsher . Keeping balance well this family isn't it, being one of the biggest beneficiaries of Hasina's mafias, now just in case things go wrong- ta - da- here we are- she has finally appeared calling Hasina an autocrat, right when the whole country is bursting out of anger against the tyrant and any one remotely related to her for committing a mass murder followed by a 15 year long suppression/oppression/looting!
We should be careful about these kind of people and NOT promote them!
This so called barrister is 3rd class one who openly sided with the razakars who never accepted Sheikh Mujibur as father of nation & hence his statue being destroyed
Yea she is Jamat supporter😂
What do you say about looting of Shaik Hasina's residence and killing of Shanto Khan etc?
Don't do crocodile tears, it is none of your business as outsider like you.
@@alx-h Murderers can be criticized by anybody
@@HeartistMurali Indeed hasina was the one who started the genocide and rest is in-front of you (if you have the eyes to see).
@@kobial8406 Murdering and looting in response to murder? That means it is a war between two murderers and looters.
"strong... INDEPENDENT......I n t e r i m govmin"...... Oxymoron
Just incase she is Wife of Bobby Hajjaj, Such young and loveble politician at the moment
These events have demonstrated a collective failure of the Indian Government in not checking or making stern statements when AL government proceeded with its atrocities, rigging elections. It protected Hasina too much and now she is a liability.
