MK4 GOLF GTI THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT

- In this video I replace the thermostat on the MK4 GOLF GTI due to issues with the car regulating the temperature of the Engine whilst the car is being driven.
I was having issues with the car, for example it would take a very long time to heat up and once it got to temperature after about 30 minutes at idle, as soon as I would begin to drive the car it would cool down almost immediately. The engine would only regain its temperature once the car was at a standstill again.
This was making the car very bad on fuel and also very cold inside as it did not have the temperature to provide for the internal heater.
I hope you enjoy watching this video and maybe even had a look at some of the other videos on this channel. I would be nice to know if any of the videos on here have helped you in some way. If you would like to see more from the SPOOLIN UP channel then please LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE : )

What a great job man! I have same issue with the temp in a GTI mk4 but honestly I could be able to change it by my self because it' s a naightmare to do it at home, so it seems that I should go to local mecanic to solve it and of course leave my money there 😥 thx VW for make it so easy guys!
Hey man, thanks I appreciate your comment. Honestly you could easily change it yourself as long as you have the right tools, time and patience on your side. Yes you could go to a local garage and get them to do it for sure. VW didn't make many things easy on this car hahaha I feel like any modifications aren't that easy either apart from the air filter Hahaha. Good luck with the car anyway man 👍🏽
Nice job. I need to do this. Where did you get the new thermostat? OEM or generic?
This was quite some time ago that I did this now but I am pretty sure I just got any old one from Euro Car Parts or GSF and the likes. Good luck
👍🏼 keep the vids coming
I will do....exhaust coming next. I had a backlog of videos and kept to the order. Thanks Jake 👍🏽
Pretty sure you do not have to remove the alternator and belt for this. I can reach my housing pretty easily without doing that. :)
Hey, did you reach it easily from the top or bottom?
Same issue on my 2.0 except my heating is very strong even when the gauge is low... maybe its just a false reading on the gauge 🤔
Hey man it could be that, it could also be the temperature sensor not relaying info or relaying incorrect info. Does the gauge ever move at all?
Poor design
Unfortunately yes is you are right
Mines been doing this aswell stupid mechanic I was using where I lived before I just moved kept telling me he didn’t no if it was thermostat or temp sensor 🤦🏻♂️ after hearing this it’s defo the thermostat as mine has same symptoms. Will get this done ASAP been driving like it a while! Thank you very much 🙏🏼
I've heard that the temperature sensor is also a common problem. If you are experiencing the same problems as I have then I suggest that you try the thermostat. The temperature sensor I dont think would cause the car to behave the same way as when the thermostat is faulty. Good luck, any questions ask me on insta 👊🏾
@@SPOOLINUP Cheers will do.. I’m vw_glenn.c on insta you followed me back already 👍🏻
Don’t need to flush the coolant? I thought you had to?
To be honest I am not 100% sure. I can't think of a reason off the top of my head why you would have to. You lose enough of it anyway but it wouldn't do any harm if you did or didn't 👊🏾
@@SPOOLINUP awesome cheers g
@@frasermate4729 You are welcome any time 👍
U need to get deletes done 😉
Since this video has been made the deletes have been done 😉 I wish it was the first thing I did as it makes every other job 1000 times easier 👌🏾
@@SPOOLINUP ive still to get it all done on my octavia, and the thermostat lol
Ahh I see! Well the thermostat is a nice easy job, and the deletes just took a bit of patience so I'm sure its no match for you 👊🏾
@@SPOOLINUP i wont be doing them lol
Why is that? I know it looks like a lot of hassle 🤣
Is it possible to do it without taking out the throttle body and alternator?
To be totally honest with you I am not sure, there may be a struggle for space, you might have to try from underneath
I've got to change my thermostat so going to attempt it from underneath 1st as not too sure about removing so much just to get at it, especially if theres only two bolts to remove the pipe.
@@joncoe9046 i already did it and all you need is to remove the alternator it’s annoyingly in the way and a second set of hands is a huge help aswell
Well done mate! Like to hear success stories lol
Hey bud,
Great video,
Quick question, did that thermostat issue also caused your radiator fans to fail as well?
Hi mate, thank you for your feedback. The fans never really came on because the car never got hot enough so I am not sure because it was winter time. Maybe you could research if the temperature sensor could make the fans fail.
@@SPOOLINUP thank you for the reply.
My gti's fans dont work, however can feel the hot coolant going through pipes.
Will change coolant temperature sensor and fan switch temp sensor and see if it makes it work. Thermostat will be last option 😅
@@abqadeer8168 No problem, what kind of temperature does the car show on the gauge?
@@SPOOLINUP it stays on 90, temp rises if the car's ac is on and car is stationary. I noticed, fans do not turn on at all.
@@abqadeer8168 the fans normally only turn on when the car gets hot and not enough air is passing through the radiator for example if you are in a traffic jam or idling for a long time, the fans draw air through the radiator. If I go for a long drive and then park up at home and sit in the car for a few minutes they sometimes come on.
Have you ever had the oil light in?
No mate I have not!! Do you?
*SPOOLIN UP* yeah comes on and just beeps then flashes the whole time didn’t know if you knew the issue mate
@@liamfenwick4333 have you checked the level with the dipstick?
*SPOOLIN UP* yeah all fine mate
@@liamfenwick4333 Hi, in that case it could just be the sensor.
I read somewhere about having to do an adjustment or reset with VAGCOM for the throttle body if you take it out but as you didn't mention it am I safe to assume it's not necessary? I wanna clean it while it's out.
Thanks for the video
Hi, sorry for the late reply David. I am not too sure about whether that needs to be done or not as I never heard of that myself. Things were absolutely fine with my car after re-fitting the throttle body. I did not clean my throttle body but I will be replacing the gasket soon so may give it a clean then.
Hope the video has helped you and good luck with the car.
@@SPOOLINUP No problem, it was gone 11pm when I posted so I didn't really expect any kind of reply at that time.
I spoke to a friend who said if I refit it and let the car idle for 5-10 mins that should be sufficient.
Thanks for the video & for getting back to me.
@@69DangerousD Hey, im working nights so I did see it but I was working at the time.
That sounds good to me, hope the car is all done and running sweet mate, you have taught me something there 👍🏽
You are welcome man any time 👊🏾
