    One note on the video~ When placing the thermostat in the housing, I mention a "DOT". That "DOT" is a bleed vent. ;)

      When I did mine I didn't pay attention to that dot (didn't know I needed to). The car has been running fine for a few months, is it something I should be concerned about?

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 лет назад +1

      It’s probably fine. I’m guessing there are some situations where it may not flow properly. But I wouldn’t worry much about it

      What about if you replaced the thermostat, water pump, and upper/lower radiator hoses and the car still overheats, I don’t have temp #’s but about 3/4 up the gauge, only going uphills though

    I really like that you gave an explanation for why you were doing the repair. Showing the fault code message makes this really clear for people who are new to the VW DIY community.
    Your camera work and editing makes this look easy. Another great video.

    Yes!! Great video, had the same P2181 code. Replaced the thermostat because it was stuck open. Also replaced the OEM housing, green top, coolant cover, and the crack pipe. Upgraded the crack pipe with a 42DD crack pipe and managed to do so WITHOUT removing the manifold. It was a PITA, but it was doable. Had to do this twice since the o-ring on the pipe didn't seat properly the first time but I think it was still worth it rather than removing the whole manifold.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 лет назад +2

      Man I hate the leaks after repair. The 42dd pipe is what the GTI HAS. :)

      The 2.5 is worse. Lol. The W8 is electronic and under the intake in the “V”. 🤷‍♂️

  • @qwiklok
    @qwiklok Год назад

    Excellent. Learned a lot. Although I have a V6 and 2 W8 cars, the principles are the same. I now know why I had overheating issues, did not bleed the air properly, plugged rad and needed a flush. Man, I made so many mistakes. . . . . as said, excellent. And a few tricks like dielectric grease, hose clip pliers, a clip pick, removing hoses etc
    And btw, you have a great voice for narration. Audio is crystal clear, huge difference.

    I'm all about using a little dielectric grease on those hose connections and o-rings. Love that stuff. I use it for all sorts of other stuff, too; like at the bottom of the battery terminals (between the post and the cable). It definitely keeps the crusties away, haha.

  • @Toolaholic7
    @Toolaholic7 6 лет назад +1

    See it with the GMs,Chryslers and Fords with the PO128 code too.Replacing the thermostat fixes the problem too when this code appears.The hose picks,Snap On makes the best ones now.A wide flat tip instead of a pointy tip to prevent poking holes in hoses.

  • @tullgutten

    I recommend everyone to get a vacuum filling tool for the coolant, it creates a 0.8 bar vacuum so there is no air left, cost around 50 dollar (Here in Norway at least) and is worth its weight in gold.
    I use it on every car at work, and it doubles as a leak detector when you cant get vacuum because a leak.
    Takes around 3 minutes to bleed with it and 0.1% chance of overheating or having to refill more than 0.2 liter after driving instead of filling and having to rev the engine and drive until it is hot and refill again that might take over 30 minutes on some cars or even having to wait to it is cold again.

    • @ferfire9
      @ferfire9 6 лет назад

      I think its worth mainly if you work on many cars. But if you care about your money and only have 1 /2 cars at home, its just not needed, at least with VW cars. My car bleeds itself without much trouble pretty fast, 2 or 3 runs and the air is all out.

    • @tullgutten
      @tullgutten 6 лет назад

      i have 3 Audi XD and my dad has one, i think even for a home mechanic it is gold, saves much time and you can loan it to friends if they need it.
      at work we have 2 but I had felt the need for having my own as well, as I prefer to be 99% sure the engine wont overheat from a lack of coolant since that happened to me once before I bought the tool

    Nice work Charles. I just did the t-stat housing on my wifes 04 Touareg VR6. :-) Those aluminum parts look great. The first time I did the job I used an aftermarket plastic housing. Thank you. I feel like I’ll be having to do this soon. Owner of a 11’ MK6 TDI. Brought my car to a mechanic to replace my timing belt. They did a flush and didn’t put the recommended G12 or G13 I’m my car. Instead they put the green coolant in my car. 5 months later coolant dash notification goes off because of low coolant -_- which either means I now have a leak or the coolant is simply evaporating in my cooling system.

    I would recommend getting the Ross Tech Vag Com. When I needed to program 2 keys it was cheaper buying the keys and FOB's online, cut, and program myself with the Vag Com, than going to the dealer and buying and programing there. Then I had the software to reset and trouble shoot codes on my car. It payed for itself in one use.

    IRL this is a hell of a job for vr5 motor, well at least for me it was. Had to take the radiator off, to access it, did everything as repair manual said put it all together (4+ hours of work as diy'er) aaaaand there's a leak. This happened 3 times, wasted my whole weekend on this. Turns out it was a poo quality seal which connects to the block, ended up with placing original seal added with a high temp hermetic and prayers along with my wife questioning my manhood. After a week it developed a leak in the same area, i just said dang it I'm not going to do this again and put a radiator sealant in the antifreeze (yes I am a son of a female dog to trust it) but it worked, 20k+ miles and still not a problem.

    What's the purpose of the small hole in the thermostat & why does orientation matter? I don't think I have this on my B5.

    Hi! I've got problems with my thermostat on a GTI mk5. I've been googling about the location for the thermostat, and some say its on the left side under the alternator, and some say its on the right side like yours. I'm really confused

    When I changed the housing and crack pipe, i decided its better to pull the whole front of the car off.. just to swear a bit less..

      That’s a great way. It’s how I had to do the mk3. The pipe was stuck in the block

    Could I be able to fill my 08 A3 v6 with new coolant while it’s flat on the ground? How would I be able to burp the system.

    Hello charles, thanks for great vids!! Some advice please. I've just replaced coolant thermostat with housing on 2002 Mk4 Golf. It has the green coolant sensor and also an extra 2-wire component that connect directly to the thermostat in the housing. Trying to understand what the extra component does. cant find a PID for it. Believe it may allow PCM to trigger trigger opening at lower temperatures, or perhaps it is just a on/off signal to PCM to indicate when thermo starts to open??? Keen to understand its function and how it works.

    Is there any practical purpose for putting on the coating on the new parts or is it just for style?

  • @timowallin8020

    Yeah thats some times the fix for that code, but you can easyly chek your thermostat just by make it hot and look that the temps dont go under 70c*(debends on thermostat ratein your car) on highway.
    Anyway, those metal pipes are Nice update, for your car! Even if that wouldnt fix your problem.
    The coolant that come out of the engine in video, didnt look like normal G12 coolant color! Even veryold used one, that i have seen with lots of rust in it donsent look like lime green/yellow color.
    Are you sure its good one? and so you shouldnt flush your coolant system?

  •  6 лет назад +1

    The other day i was flushing my radiator fluid in my B5. That hose was just not coming off so i drained my fluid trough drain plug in the front of the radiator. Isnt that easier?rather that pulling hose clamps etc? I understand that you have to get to termostat so in this situation maybe but just Q i am wondering. Thx for the answer. Love your videos. Fan from Slovakia (:

      Matúš Vápeník you don't have to remove the bottom hose and you can use the plug like you're saying but the hose is generally faster.

      Darn those hose clamps. Hate them

    I have a question as I'm running around trying to figure out a problem and am out of ideas...
    I just performed a coolant flush for my wifes Audi Q3 (2016 Quattro) and now I'm running into an issue where the radiator is not sucking the coolant out of the Coolant Overflow tank (this was also replaced for a brand new unit, btw). I definitely have coolant flowing into the heater core (as I'm getting really hot air) but the lower radiator hose is simply not flowing anything.
    We definitely utilized a vaccum bleeder/filler to load up the new coolant (even drained it again and performed a refill) but we just can't seem to get it to flow through the radiator. Any ideas would be helpful

    You made that look way too easy.. I needed to put my R32 in service mode to get the "crack" pipe out. It did not want to just pull out. I also noticed in the video you have secondary air pump fault codes as well.. How are you going to trouble shoot those? I have them as well. I have been knocking my head trying to figure out what is wrong with it. Hope you do a video on it!

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 лет назад +1

      Pulling the front is a good way too.
      I actually think the secondary air faults may be related to the HFC. but I haven’t really dug into it.

    Charles, I may be way off base, I mentioned on IG that you're spending about 15k on R32. But spending more money to get all the issues fixed. I would think you might be getting the R32 at cheaper price with the issues on it? Correct me if I'm wrong! :) just wanted to hear your opinion :) Ty for the awesome videos you put out! They're great source!

      I bought the car for ~$11k. I assumed that with 140k the car would have all teh common MK4 issues. There have been a few that I didn't expect and I am okay with that. The cool thing about the amount I paid for the car is that it doesn't matter one bit. It mattered the day I got it and it will never matter again.
      Now I am focusing on getting the car right, and making awesome content for you guys.

    since this is an upgrade will you put the dsg intake on the car??? it will need a reflash but gains are good and still oem, the lmm is 10mm bigger on the dsg version(same as the audi a3 3.2 250bhp) it´s officiel 9bhp since the r32 only has 241bhp.

    I have to do this on my cayenne. Its the same engine only differnce is that the engine sits longitudinally in the engine bay and not sideways. Repair manuals states to remove the transmission as the frist step. Cant make this shit up🤦‍♂️we'll see how that goes. Hopefully i can get it off without removing the transmission. Maybe someone in the comments already did this and can help me out with it?

    Great video as always. Why the dye electric grease tho? I know it creates a seal to help keep dirt and water out of as well as lubricates the plug on electrical components. Is it acting in the same manner for this application? Also, would the grease getting into the cooling system be any cause for concern or no because of the small amount?
    Thanks in advance

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 лет назад

      You nailed it. Purely a lubricant for the seals. I’ve been using it forever. Never seen any ill effect from it. I guess if you put a crap ton on it may. Haha
